Schools develop organizational cultures of their own; these cultures establish traditions and norms that guide everyday life in schools. The purpose of this case study was to examine teachers’ and administrators’ perceptions of how a positive school culture has been shaped, maintained, and sustained over the past four decades at one midsized Catholic high school in Southeastern Ontario. The qualitative research design combined document analysis and qualitative interviewing with the aim to establish a greater understanding of the school’s history. The interviews were conducted with current and former teachers and administrators who have worked at the school between 1970 and 2013. By looking at this school as a case study, I have attempted to gain a deeper insight to the subjective experiences that different teachers and administrators have had with the school over the course of its recent history, and have thereby developed an understanding of the motivations and actions undertaken to both preserve and change the school’s normative structure over the course of time. The results of the study indicate that the school has been able to maintain and sustain a positive culture over the past forty years. The findings have determined the school’s cultural manifestations at each of the three levels of organizational culture...

The European Culture Collections' Organisation (ECCO) was established in 1981. The aim of the organisation is to promote collaboration and exchange of ideas and information about ali aspects of culture collection activity. ECCO meetings are held annually and are a valuable forum for discussion and innovation on the future development of member collection activities. The organization has evolved for an important think tank with important contributions through collaborative projects like the MINE EU project in the mid-1980s to bundle the comrnon interests of microbial service collections and their users. ln the subsequent CABRI EU project, some of the leading collections in Europe made available the contents of their individual catalogues for comparison via a search engine which provides access to a comrnon Catalogue (http://www.cabri.org/CABRI!srs-doc/index.html). Later on, the EBRCN EU project focused on guidelines for best practice towards an ISO-compliant quality management. These outputs were key-elements for the OECD initiative related with the BRCs task-force and the current OECD guidelines for BRCs. More recently, the EMbaRC project enlarged the spectrum of activities and dealt with contemporary topics such as biological safety...

This article describes a review of the studies and thoughts on motivation to study and academic culture. 47 research reports published between 1994 and 2005 were analyzed. Results and conclusions were reviewed and organized in a matrix that permitted classification of the variables covered in the studies, in motivation to study as well as academic culture. Among the variables, aspects were found that refer on the one hand to types of motivation: intrinsic, extrinsic and social, with reference to factors that trigger all types of motivation with regard to school work and study in general, in the same way as some motivational styles and strategies that schools use to improve the academic development of their students. On the other hand, there are aspects of school culture thatrelate to the very elements of which it consists, the influence in teaching-learning processes and motivation to study, as well as the impact of social culture, the mass media and technology.

The literature on organization socialization suggests characteristics associated with strong organization culture. Key among these is a socialization process that emphasizes well-defined roles, rules, routines, and values; reinforcement with intrinsic and extrinsic reward systems; and conditioning experiences. That literature also suggests that an organization exhibiting a strong culture and socialization process will likely elicit participant behavior that is highly congruent with the espoused values and objectives stated by the organization. This paper uses a case study of General Motors' Saturn Corporation to suggest an enrichment of this theory. We argue that Saturn fulfills all the requirements of a strong culture and socialization process yet we find patterns of behavior seemingly at odds with the espoused values and objectives articulated in the environment. Co-existing with and within the strong corporate culture at Saturn, we found work group subcultures whose socialization processes can be just as strong as those at the corporate level but whose values suggest individual behaviors that conflict with those espoused at the corporate level. These observations lead us to suggest a model of culture-influenced behavior that explicitly addresses the existence of distinct subgroup cultures. Interestingly...

Different cultural contexts contribute to substantial variation in the stigma faced by people with psychosis globally. We propose a new formulation of how culture affects stigma to create psychometrically-validated tools to assess stigma's culture-specific effects. We propose to construct culture-specific stigma measures for the Chilean context via: 1) open-ended administration of 'universal' stigma scales to a sample of individuals with psychosis, relatives, and community respondents; 2) qualitative analyses to identify how culture shapes stigma and to derive initial 'culture-specific' stigma items; 3) construction and pilot-testing of final 'culture-specific' stigma measures; 4) initial psychometric validation among a sample of individuals with psychosis. We identify initial hypotheses for how stigma might threaten the capacities to participate in fundamental activities that 'matter most' in the Chilean context. These include mental illness stigma threatening the man's ability to protect the honor of the family, and the woman's ability to be a 'holy and pure' mother. Mental illness stigma may further endanger the ability of the family to uphold reciprocal obligations within their social network. Developing such measures promises to aid efforts to address culture-specific forms of stigma...

OBJECTIVE: to verify the assessment of the patient safety culture according to the function and length of experience of the nursing and medical teams at Neonatal Intensive Care Units. METHOD: quantitative survey undertaken at four Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Florianópolis, Brazil. The sample totaled 141 subjects. The data were collected between February and April 2013 through the application of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture. For analysis, the Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-Square tests and Cronbach's Alpha coefficient were used. Approval for the research project was obtained from the Ethics Committee, CAAE: 05274612.7.0000.0121. RESULTS: differences in the number of positive answers to the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture, the safety grade and the number of reported events were found according to the professional characteristics. A significant association was found between a shorter Length of work at the hospital and Length of work at the unit and a larger number of positive answers; longer length of experience in the profession represented higher grades and less reported events. The physicians and nursing technicians assessed the patient safety culture more positively. Cronbach's alpha demonstrated the reliability of the instrument. CONCLUSION: the differences found reveal a possible relation between the assessment of the safety culture and the subjects' professional characteristics at the Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

Master in Human Resources Management / J13 Fertility • Family Planning • Child Care • Children • Youth J71 Discrimination; This research deals with the influence of the organizational work-family culture on women’s perceived pregnancy discrimination and its affective commitment consequences. It was investigated (a) the effect of work-family culture on the perceptions of pregnancy discrimination that (b) in turn should influence the affective commitment of the working women. A total of 126 working women provided data on their perceptions of pregnancy discrimination, the organizational work-family culture and the affective commitment towards their workplace. The proposed model was tested using structural equation modeling (SEM) procedures and, overall, support a full mediation model in which organizational work-family culture is related to the perceptions of the pregnancy discrimination, which negatively impact the affective commitment towards their organization (χ2 (269) = 439.18; RMSEA = .071 ; CFI = .98; TLI = .98; WRMR = .93). These results make valuable contributions to the literature of pregnancy discrimination at the workplace, and to the organizational work-family culture as a decisive influence factor on pregnancy discrimination and consequently on the workers’ affective commitment.; Este estudo analisa a influência de uma cultura organizacional laboral e familiar nas percepções de discriminação de grávidas por parte de mulheres trabalhadoras...

Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Barcelona, 5-8 Septiembre 2008.; How it is to be an adolescent among the Santals, in a world still shaped by tradition but where local knowledge has been pervaded by political awareness and modernity.? The Santals, who number more than five millions, consider themselves as a «tribal» people speaking a different language (austro-asiatic) and sharing a way of life which implies values different from those of the Hindus. A central question , here, concerns the transmission of knowledge. In a tribal context, traditional knowledge is to a large extent endogenously determined. Differences in knowledge are no longer controlled by the elders, but still provide much of the momentum for social interaction. Since the colonial period schooling has been important but it has not succeeded to bring an equal opportunity of chances for all children. In brief, I will analyze how the traditional model of transmission is influenced by exogenous factors, such as schooling or politics, and events which allow children to emerge as new agents, developing a peer culture (W. Corsaro & D. Eder 1990). In the context of tribal India...

Após refletir sobreas peculiaridades da constituição do campo no País, o texto propõe medidas visando a um desenvolvimento desejávelpara a formação de organizadores da cultura.; The subject of education of cultural managers or, more broadly, professionals dedicated to the organization of culture, as willbe further examined, today is fundamentally important not only to the development of culture in Brazil and in the world but alsoto the creation of cultural policies effectively imaginative and contemporary. A deeper analysis of the theme requires some reflection, although a bit panoramic, about culture presentconfiguration; about the organization of a cultural system; and about the singularities of the Brazilian case in this field.
