Regenerative Medicine is an emerging field that combines basic research and clinical observations in order to identify the elements required to replace damaged tissues and organs in vivo and to stimulate the body's intrinsic regenerative capacity. Great benefits are expected in this field as researchers take advantage of the potential regenerative properties of both embryonic and adult stem cells, and more recently, of induced pluripotent stem cells. Bioengineered skin emerged mainly in response to a critical need for early permanent coverage of extensive burns. Later this technology was also applied to the treatment of chronic ulcers. Our group has established a humanized mouse model of skin grafting that involves the use of bioengineered human skin in immunodeficient mice. This model is suitable for the study of physiologic and pathologic cutaneous processes and the evaluation of treatment strategies for skin diseases, including protocols for gene and cell therapy and tissue engineering.; Our work has been funded by the Spanish Department of Science and Innovation (SAF2007-61019 and SAF 2010-16976), by the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Raras (CIBERER), and by the Ministry of Health (Advanced Therapies Plan...

The harmonic functions have proved to be a powerful technique for motion planning in a known environment. They have two important properties: given an initial point and an objective in a connected domain, a unique path exists between those points. This path is the maximum gradient path of the harmonic function that begins in the initial point and ends in the goal point. The second property is that the harmonic function cannot have local minima in the interior of the domain (the objective point is considered as a border). This paper proposes a new method to solve Laplace's equation. The harmonic function solution with mixed boundary conditions provides paths that verify the smoothness and safety considerations required for mobile robot path planning. The proposed approach uses the Finite Elements Method to solve Laplace's equation, and this allows us to deal with complicated shapes of obstacles and walls. Mixed boundary conditions are applied to the harmonic function to improve the quality of the trajectories. In this way, the trajectories are smooth, avoiding the corners of walls and obstacles, and the potential slope is not too small, avoiding the difficulty of the numerical calculus of the trajectory. Results show that this method is able to deal with moving obstacles...

We study how changes in the information available to the players of a symmetric common-value Tullock contest with incomplete information affect their payoffs and their incentives to exert effort. For the class of contests where players' state dependent cost of effort is multiplicative, we show that if the players' Arrow-Pratt measure of relative risk aversion is increasing (decreasing), then the value of Public information is positive (negative). Moreover, if players' cost of effort (value) is state independent, then players' effort decreases (increases) with the level of information.; Einy acknowledges financial support of the Israel Science Foundation, grant 648/2. In recent times, Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) enable user's mobility, not needing to be in a fixed place anymore. For this service to be successful, seamless transitions between the different technologies become essential, in order to make possible the always best connected goal. This brings an additional problematic, which is the impairments resulting from a handover between two networks. In order to succesfully plan and continue the development of always on services and mobility management, the approach must be based on user's perception of phenomena such us packet loss, the so-called Quality of Experience (QoE). This is the context in which Mobisense was born, intending a better understanding of NGMN transmission phenomena and resulting quality. Hence, Mobisense project is focused on the evaluation of the quality of service from user's point of view and on the seamless switch provision between video codecs when connections are transferred between two networks. On that purpose, a NGMN test environment was developed for real-time multimedia services. In this environment, specific network conditions can be associated with user's assessments within a realistic model. Mobisense project creates the foundations for the employment of advance prediction methods for real-time mobility management...

Autonomy is a prime issue on robotics field and it is closely related to decision making. Last researches on decision making for social robots are focused on biologically inspired mechanisms for taking decisions. Following this approach, we propose a motivational system for decision making, using internal (drives) and external stimuli for learning to choose the right action. Actions are selected from a finite set of skills in order to keep robot's needs within an acceptable range. The robot uses reinforcement learning in order to calculate the suitability of every action in each state. The state of the robot is determined by the dominant motivation and its relation to the objects presents in its environment. The used reinforcement learning method exploits a new algorithm called Object Q-Learning. The proposed reduction of the state space and the new algorithm considering the collateral effects (relationship between different objects) results in a suitable algorithm to be applied to robots living in real environments. In this paper, a first implementation of the decision making system and the learning process is implemented on a social robot showing an improvement in robot's performance. The quality of its performance will be determined by observing the evolution of the robot's wellbeing.; The funds provided by the Spanish Government through the project called “Peer to Peer Robot-Human Interaction” (R2H)...

We analyze a competitive research-oriented public program established in Spain, the Ramon yCajal Program, intended to offer contracts in public research centers to high-quality researchers. We study the effects of the Program on the ex-post scientific productivity of its recipients, relativeto unsuccessful applicants with comparable curricula at the time of application. The full sampleresults demonstrate that the Program has a positive and significant effect on the scientific impactof the recipients, as measured by the average and the maximum impact factors, but the effect onthe number of published papers is not significant. Consequently, receiving a contract does notsignificantly affect the quantity, but increases the quality, of the contract recipients' publications. This result is primarily driven by the particular relevance of experimental sciences in the Program.; Research funding from the Ministry of Finance and Competitiveness, Grant Nos. In this work we analyze the model-building issue and the requirements it imposes on the learning paradigm being used. We argue that error-based learning, the class of learning most commonly used in MOEDAs, is responsible for current MOEDA underachievement. We present ART as a viable alternative and present a novel algorithm called multi-objective ART-based EDA (MARTEDA) that uses a Gaussian ART neural network for model-building and an hypervolume based selector as described for the HypE algorithm. We experimentally show that thanks to MARTEDA's novel model-building approach and an indicator-based population ranking the algorithm it is able to outperform similar MOEDAs and MOEAs.; This work was supported in part by projects CICYT TIN2008-06742-C02-02/TSI, CICYT TEC2008-06732-C02-02/TEC, DPS2008-07029-C02-02 and CAM CONTEXTS S2009/TIC-1485.; Proceedings of: 12th annual conference on Genetic and evolutionary computation (GECCO '10). Evolutionary algorithms exhibit some traditional handicaps: lack of a stopping criterion, slow convergence towards the minimum, etc. Memetic algorithms try to combine the best exploration qualities of population based approaches with the exploitation qualities of local search ones. The proposed solution in this work, Robust Evolutionary Strategy Learned with Automated Termination Criteria (R-ESLAT) uses a memetic approach, combining an evolutionary strategy with derivative-free local search methods, adding as well a termination criteria based on the population diversity, according to the principles of the original ESLAT algorithm. The original algorithm is analyzed and its features improved towards an increased robustness, comparing the results obtained with the Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolutionary Strategy (CMAES).; The authors would like to thank Alfonso Gómez-Jordana for his help in the development of the original algorithm.

The main objective of maximizing accessibility is not always taken into account in the design of web applications, specifically to facilitate access for disabled people. In this paper we present a multimodal dialogue system to demonstrate the potential of the XHTML+Voice standard for oral access to the Internet. The system consists of several modules to access web information. This contribution is focused on three of them. Voice Dictionary allows users to access Wikipedia. This paper describes a robust algorithm for mobile robot formations based on the Voronoi Fast Marching path planning method. This is based on the propagation of a wave throughout the model of the environment, the wave expanding faster as the wave's distance from obstacles increases. This method provides smooth and safe trajectories and its computational efficiency allows us to maintain a good response time. The proposed method is based on a local-minima-free planner; it is complete and has an O(n) complexity order where n is the number of cells of the map. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm generates good trajectories.; Comunidad de Madrid

Testing the Equality of Nonparametric Regression Curves

Publicado em //1993 Português
This paper proposes a test for the equality of nonparametric regression curves that does not depend on the choice of a smoothing number. The test statistic resembles in spirit the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic and it is easy to compute. It is powerful under alternatives that converge to the null hypothesis at a rate n ^ (-1/2). The disturbance distributions are arbitrary and possibly unequal, and conditions on the regressors distribution are very mild. A Monte Carlo study illustrates the performance of the test in small and moderate samples. We also study extensions to multiple regression, and test the equality of several regression curves.

Measuring the Contribution of Human Capital to the development of Catalan Factory System (1830-61)

Rosés, Joan R.

Tipo: Artigo de Revista Científica Formato: application/pdf
Publicado em //1998 Português
The article argues that for a region adopting a technology from elsewhere, an existing stock of (relevant) human capital was essential to the rapid and successful adoption of the technology. But once the technology has been fully assimilated, increments to human capital would not be expected to be important in its further growth. Thus, Catalan industrialisation was possible because the level of human capital present in industry was enough to adopt and modify new technologies. Human capital stock was mainly the result of past investments in on-the-job training, and children's informal education took place in the workplace rather than the schoolroom. Therefore, the level of human capital present in the workforce was higher than literacy and schooling rates showed. However, evidence is also presented on the low contribution made by human capital to growth rates.
