This study examines the switching costs' empirical importance for the Brazilian banking services industry. Switching costs are costs economic agents sustain when they change suppliers. These are the leading cause for customer lock-in...

We present quasi-experimental estimates of the effect of privatisation on wages in the Portuguese banking sector for the period 1989-97. The design of the reform and the nature of dataset employed provide an important opportunity to analyse the effects of privatisation on different demographic groups, using multiple control groups and taking into consideration the timing of the effects. We find a positive relationship between time of restructuring and wage variation regardless the choice of the control group. Retained employees in privatised firms did experience lower wage growth rates, but only during the first two years after the ownership change. Estimates for top managers appear to contradict the theoretical predictions.; Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) - Programa Operacional Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação (POCTI).

The purpose of this article is to capture the perceptions of knowledge management and intellectual capital in the banking industry. The reason for developing such a study is that little research as clearly addressed both subjects at the same time. After verifying that knowledge management and intellectual capital are identified as different concepts in the banking industry, the final aim of the author is to identify the relevancy and perceived value of such organizational variables in the banks. In that sense, this research paper follows a qualitative approach and considers two different knowledge management strategies: exploitation and exploration and three different intellectual capital components: human capital, internal structures and external structures. The paper develops and analyses several interviews in the banking industry at top management level across different banks. This study led to some interesting findings, allowing to empirically verify most of the theoretical knowledge management and intellectual capital literatures, as well as to gather some examples of its routines and elements, and also to identify the value given to knowledge management and intellectual capital by the banks that took part of the study. There are some research limitations regarding the industry context...

In this study, I identify and discuss innovation strategies for the Japanese banking industry, with special focus on the R&D process through which banks are seeking to create new e-business opportunities. Traditionally, it was thought to be difficult to undertake well-organized R&D activities in a service industry because the intangible nature of banking services made it difficult to conduct R&D in a typical laboratory setting. Therefore, many service firms did not organize formal R&D activities. Furthermore, Japanese banks faced environmental obstacles to innovation, including government regulations, non-performing loans, and legacy assets that were difficult to abandon, such as the backbone banking system supported by major mainframe architecture. Today, emerging Internet technologies are at last triggering R&D activities among Japanese banks, and they are achieving some success in this field. This thesis identifies empirical R&D methods that have become more commonly used by Japanese banks, as well as the problems encountered in the effort to generate creative and effective ideas, screen them, perform trial-and-error iterations, and manage tests on real-life situations to gain customer input. I identify four factors that can help banks achieve innovation: managing institutional matters...

Understanding the industry structure of banking services in Brazil is an important task both for the financial community at large and for country specialists. The Brazilian financial system is the largest and most sophisticated in Latin America. This study is organized into five sections after the introduction, in line with the main analytical building blocks, and complemented by appendices that describe methodological aspects in more detail. Section 2 presents some stylized facts on the Brazilian banking system and compares it to a peer group of countries. Section 3 describes and presents the results of the industrial organization perspective (indirect approach). Section 4 presents the methodology and results -- including sensitivity analysis -- of the direct approach. Section 5 identifies and discusses the characteristics and main drivers of revenues, costs and risks by market segment, while Section 6 concludes and presents policy implications.

New semiparametric panel estimation methods have been developed, which make minimal distributional or functional form assumptions on the model. These estimators are illustrated in an efficiency analysis of the banking industry. This analysis finds that functional form and distributional assumptions are important in efficiency estimation. Moreover, models of time varying efficiency are relevant and indicate productivity movements in the banking industry.

In this dissertation, structural models that utilize parametric and nonparametric approaches are developed that are used to measure competition and cost efficiency in the US banking industry (1990--96). Competition in loan and deposit markets is studied using the method of conjectural variations (Bresnahan, 1982). The results indicate that market imperfections present are negligible, and that loan and deposit services are competitively priced. Cost efficiency is studied using a stochastic cost frontier in the spirit of Bauer (1990), and cost increases above optimal levels are assigned to technical and allocative inefficiencies. The results indicate that technical inefficiency is the major cause for deviations from the cost frontier and allocative inefficiency is declining during this period.

This paper uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to identify strategic groups (SGs) in the Spanish banking industry. The concept of SG relies on the fact that firms grouped together value inputs and outputs in the same way. As such, they take identical direction when, due to external influences, changes are required. Weights obtained from DEA are extremely useful in the valuation of inputs and outputs. Specifically, by comparing DEA weights pair-wise, i.e. quantifying the variables’ marginal rates (MR), we can obtain a very good representation of the existent trade-off and the relative importance of the two variables. The paper uses MRs obtained through DEA models and, simultaneously, proposes feasible ways to overcome two usual problems with DEA virtual weights, namely: (1) the multiplicity of weights for efficient DMUs; and (2) the inexistence of dual variables for inefficient DMUs. From the empirical point of view, once the MRs are determined, the second stage is to perform Cluster Analysis. We apply Cluster Analysis in two ways: (1) on the basis of the MRs; and (2) following the traditional application by running Cluster Analysis with the original variables. The results obtained show the advantages of using MRs instead of the standard application of Cluster Analysis. Summing up...

This assessment of Moldova current state of compliance with the Basel core principles for effective banking supervision (BCPs) was undertaken as part of a joint International Monetary Fund (IMF) - World Bank mission in connection with a broader financial sector assessment program exercise. This version of the assessment has a greater focus on risk management policies and practices implemented by supervised institutions and their assessment by the supervisory authority as well as more emphasis on quality implementation of supervisory standards. The assessment has been conducted in accordance with the revised BCP assessment methodology approved by the Basel committee and was based on extensive discussions with officers and staff members of the Banking Supervision Department in National Bank of Moldova (NBM), and a review of internal supervisory documents, such as manuals, operating policies, examination reports, and external audit reports. The mission reviewed the BCP self-assessment undertaken by NBM preceding this assessment...

This assessment of the current state of the implementation of the Basel core principles (BCP) for effective banking supervision in Bulgaria has been completed as a stand-alone report on the observance of standards and codes undertaken by the international monetary fund (IMF) and the World Bank during March of 2015 at the request of the Bulgarian authorities. It reflects the regulatory and supervisory framework in place as of the date of the completion of the assessment. The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) has an internal governance structure which, by vesting the majority of the powers of supervision in the Deputy Governor for banking supervision, exposes the supervisory function to risks. Under the BNB’s legal structure, supervision and enforcement is dissociated from the Governing Council, and the Governing Council has no right to compel transparency of decision making or to impose a framework to ensure consistency in the use of the enforcement regime. There are material concerns that the BNB is too resource constrained to deliver effective minimum levels of supervision. Despite a broad range of supervisory powers...

The international banking industry faces a challenging future, having to consolidate at a time of heightened global financial volatility, anemic growth in advanced countries, and shifting global growth balances. After a long period of sustained expansion and accommodating regulatory treatment, the structure of international banking is changing as global banks' business strategies shift toward fast-growing emerging-market economies. The center of gravity for international lending is shifting, with the role of European banks shrinking and American, Japanese, and emerging-market banks filling in the space. Against this backdrop, the current debate on adding economic stimulus to support the sputtering global economic recovery should consider the possible contractionary impacts of bank deleveraging, even with global interest rates remaining at historically low levels.

Banking the Poor presents new data collected from two sources: central banks, and leading commercial banks in each surveyed country. It explores associations between countries' banking policies and practices, and their levels of financial access measured in terms of the numbers of bank accounts per thousand adults. It builds on the previous work of measuring financial access through information obtained from regulators, banks, and household surveys. It explores associations between countries' banking policies and practices, and their levels of financial access, measured in terms of the numbers of bank accounts per thousand adults. The extent to which people are banked depends primarily on how wealthy they are. Even in the poorest countries, rich urban customers get access to good banking. Although there are a range of financial services used by the poorest, these are usually provided outside the formal banking system. Banks are used by those above this threshold, usually by salaried employees who have the steady income. Naturally banks are more likely to seek out users with a steady, predicatable income. Expanding credit for enterprises leads to the creation of a salaried class that wants to bank: this is the primary way to increase bank access. While bank clients make up the largest part of those using financial services in most countries...

The past two decades have seen a revolution in the Latin American banking industry with a rash of crises, reforms, deregulation, privatizations, and foreign bank investment. The region has become a hot bed of interest in global financial markets. Brazil in particular has seen a significant change in its banking sectors competitive makeup with increases in foreign bank participation and lessening of public bank burden on the federal government. Competition, consolidation, and efficiency measures throughout the region have led to a reexamining of the costs and benefits of consolidated banking sectors and the threat of monopolistic actions of banks. Possible statistical analytical tools for efficiency, concentration, and competition are discussed, such as the Panzer Rosse H-Statistic, Frontier Analysis, and others. The quiet life theory of a monopoly is examined and put up against the efficient structure hypothesis of Demsetz in order to see which theory may hold more credence in the Brazilian banking sector upon further research. The paper finished with the analysis of the Brazilian banking sector and how developments can we do in future research to expand and fortify the previous findings about Brazilian banking sector.

The objective of this study is to examine the portfolio theory that suggests that diversification can potentially reduce both the return variance and the probability of failure of a portfolio. The study aims to investigate the diversification measure by means of the Hershman-Herfindahl index proposed by Berry [1], and applies the 'diversification index' proposed by Demsetz and Strahan [2,3] by scaling systematic risk with stock return variance of individual banks. It is assumed that as banking has a high diversification index (a high R2), the fraction of risk stemming from firm-specific factors will be small. Next, this study examines the effects of diversification on risk and financial performance, respectively, and finally tests the causality between diversification, risk and financial performance in Taiwan's banking industry for the period 1993-2001. Our paper provides strong evidence of a link between diversification, risk and financial performance of the banking industry in Taiwan. The empirical examinations suggest that diversification may provide an important motive for risk reduction and performance enhancement for the banking industry.

Making a decision on where would be the best location to sell a product is the mostcrucial task in any market sector. However, this is a complex undertaking since itinvolves numerous variables, not only related to space, but also related tosubjectivity and symbolism and often related to personal opinions. Taking intoconsideration that the decision on the location involves many variables as to spaceas well as symbolic variables, this paper presents the integration of a GeographicalInformation System (GIS) with an Expert System (ES) in order to help with thedecision taking process of where to start a new retailer in the banking sector, in thiscase within the HSBC Bank Brazil S/A, Multiple Banking, Department of RealEstate Administration for the area of the city of Curitiba, Paraná. The system wasdeveloped in several steps. To implement GIS ArcGIS was used and to develop theExpert System it was used a shell, named Expert SINTA. The user interface wasdeveloped by using programming language Visual Basic. A comparison was madebetween the methodology used of the specialists of the Department of Real EstateAdministration and the proposed system in order to validate the results. Theconclusion was that the integration of the systems contributed to an improvementwithin the decision maping process as to the location in the banking sector...
