The importance of physical activity in promoting health and well-being of the young adult population is evidenced by several epidemiological studies. The increasing incidence in this population of cardiovascular, metabolic and degenerative diseases and obesity has been linked with an epidemic variable, the sedentary behavior, and commonly dubbed the “disease of the century”. Regular physical activity may contribute to the development of muscle strength, improve the quality of soft tissue and bone mass, and decreased body fat. The early inclusion of regular physical activity and other healthy lifestyles tend to be incorporated throughout life with noticeable gains in health and quality of life in adult life. In this study we assessed the physical activity level (PAL), muscle strength (MS) and body composition (BC) of 84 young adults in higher education with the following, assess physical activity; evaluate different manifestations of muscle strength; assess body composition and analyze the relationship between muscle strength, body composition and physical activity in young adults. We drew up a descriptive, correlational and cross-cutting study. Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease that has great influence on functional independence and quality of life, leading to reduced bone mass, microarchitectural deterioration, increased bone fragility, bone fractures with minimal trauma, decreased bone mineral density and decrease bone quality. This quality is defined by the bone health of it and is closely related to physical activity and body composition, genetic and hormonal factors and nutrition. Under normal conditions, bone mineral density evolves, increased up to 27 years, leveling up to 40. From here begins to decrease and there is a sharp decline in the menopausal stage and after it keeps a sharp downward trend. Thus we aim to evaluate the physical condition of postmenopausal osteoporotic women, assessing their functional status, different manifestations of strength and body composition. After approval by the Ethics Committee of the North Health Region, we identified women diagnosed with osteoporosis by dual-energy bone densitometry (DEXA), which showed inclusion criteria and who wanted to participate in the study of their own free will. The prevention and treatment of diseases related to changes in body composition require accurate methods for the measurement of body composition. However, few studies have dealt specifically with the assessment of body composition of undernourished older subjects by different methodologies. To assess the body composition of undernourished older subjects by two different methods, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and bioelectric impedance (BIA), and to compare results with those of an eutrophic group. The study model was cross-sectional; the study was performed at the University Hospital of the School of Medicine of Ribeiro Preto, University of So Paulo, Brazil. Forty-one male volunteers aged 62 to 91 years. The groups were selected on the basis of anamnesis, physical examination and nutritional assessment according to the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) score. Body composition was assessed by DXA and BIA. Body weight, arm and calf circumference, body mass index (BMI), fat free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) were significantly lower in the undernourished group as compared to the eutrophic group. There were no significant differences between FFM and FM mean values determined by DXA and BIA in both groups, but the agreement between methods in the undernourished group was less strong. Our results suggest caution when BIA is to be applied in studies including undernourished older subjects. O acetato de medroxiprogesterona de depósito (AMPD) é um contraceptivo de uso trimestral, considerado seguro e altamente eficaz, dispensado pelo setor público de vários países entre eles o Sistema Único de Saúde, SUS. Usuárias de contraceptivos hormonais frequentemente se preocupam com efeitos imediatos do uso, entre eles o ganho de peso corporal. Os estudos sobre variação de peso em usuárias de AMPD mostram resultados controversos e, entre os que mostram ganho de peso em gordura em parte das usuárias, não é clara a etiologia do ganho. Poucos estudos avaliaram a ingestão alimentar e gasto energético destas usuárias. Objetivos: Avaliar a ingestão alimentar, ganho de peso e a composição corporal em novas usuárias do contraceptivo acetato de medroxiprogesterona de depósito (AMPD). The background and questions of this investigation are centre in the methodological area and body composition rules. The first problem analysed the accuracy of some laboratory and field methods available (DXA, BIA and Anthropometry) in assessing body composition changes in overweight and obese women after a 16 months weight loss program management using a four-component molecular model as reference. The second studied the reasons why the changes in weight and body composition may result in functional changes in the thoracic gas volume (VTG) and, consequently, in the inadequate assessment of fat mass through a two-compartment model as Bod Pod. The last problem tested the accuracy of Bod Pod in tracking body composition changes using DXA as reference. It was verified that the single frequency BIA-Tanita device, a field method, showed a good level of performance in tracking body composition changes, similarly to the laboratory methods used, DXA and Bod Pot, despite being a two-compartment model. The present dissertation presents four research studies conducted under the scope of the body composition methodological and alteration research areas. In the methodological area, an alternative solution to evaluate participants taller than the DXA scan area was valid and simple to be used in athletes engaged in sports recognised for including very tall competitors. Another study was performed to test the validity of a combined motion sensor (accelerometer and heart rate monitor) in assessing total and activity energy expenditure of highly trained athletes. Using doubly labelled water as the reference method, the combined sensor was accurate for estimating energy expenditure at a group level but was of limited validity for assessing energy requirements in athletes. Determination of body composition is very important in nutritional and growth regulation studies. However, determination of body composition by grinding and analyzing all tissues is unfeasible as an experimental routine. The objective of this study was to test methodologies for body composition estimation. Linear measurements and chemical composition of the 9-10-11th and 10th rib sections were used to estimate chemical composition of 31 Nellore (Zebu) intact males with an average 333.5 kg body weight (range of 180.5 to 496.0) and 16.1% empty body lipid (range of 10.6 to 22.1). Composition of ribs, carcass and empty body were obtained by quantitatively grinding, homogenizing and sampling all body tissues. The 9-10-11th composition was a good estimator of body composition with r² of 0.99; 0.98; 0.98 and 0.91 for estimates of kg water, lipid, protein, and ash; with low standard errors of the estimate. Results with the 10th rib cut were similar (r² of 0.98, 0.98, 0.97 and 0.88 for the same regressions). Data are in the range of published results, however coefficients of regression were statistically different from those published for Bos taurus populations. peer-reviewed; The Special K Challenge is a partial meal replacement plan whereby two main meals are substituted with a fixed portion of Kellogg‟s Special K and semi-skimmed milk for two weeks. It is designed to reduce energy intake sufficient to reduce body mass and waist circumference in order to encourage long term body mass reduction. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the Special K Challenge on body composition and biomarkers of fat metabolism in healthy adults. Twenty four subjects (12 men and 12 women) with a mean age of 34.7 (11.7) and mean body mass index of 28.6 (2.9)kg/m2 were recruited via email from the University of Limerick campus. Dietary intake and body composition was measured over a two week period to establish a basal level (BASAL) prior to the two week Special K Challenge (DIET). Dietary intake was assessed by interview and dietary recall using food diaries. Body composition was measured using bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Blood serum and plasma were analysed for total, LDL and HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, insulin, leptin and adiponectin. The Special K Challenge induced a mean energy deficit of 673 (360)kcal (p < 0.001). The macronutrient contribution to total energy intake was favourably improved closer to the recommended daily intake. Total body mass was reduced by a mean of 1.7 (1.4)kg (p < 0.001). Fat and fat free mass were reduced by 0.7 (0.8)kg (p < 0.001) and 0.9 (1.0)kg (p < 0.05) respectively. Leptin is a recently isolated peptide hormone released from adipocytes that has been postulated to play a role in appetite regulation and energy metabolism. Aging affects both food intake and body composition. Body composition is also affected by ethnicity. We have evaluated the relationships between serum leptin levels, age, body composition (by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), and hormonal parameters in a cross-sectional study of 94 women, 53 African-American (AAF) and 41 Caucasian (CF). Our hypotheses were as follows: (1) changes in body composition would be related to age in a sinusoidal pattern, (2) changes in serum leptin would parallel changes in body fat, (3) serum leptin levels would be influenced by body fat distribution, and (4) serum leptin would be related to serum concentrations of sex hormones. Serum leptin paralleled changes in body fat and body mass index (BMI) with age. In the entire group, serum leptin correlated closely with measures of body fat, including BMI and total fat mass, and there was no difference in leptin levels between the two ethnic groups. BACKGROUND: Age-related change in body composition is associated with adverse health outcomes, including functional decline, disability, morbidity, and early mortality. Prevention of age-related changes requires a greater understanding of the associations among age, lifestyle factors, and body composition. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to comprehensively determine lifestyle factors associated with age-related differences in body composition assessed by using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. DESIGN: We analyzed baseline (cross-sectional) data collected from 2002 to 2005 for approximately 1200 men in the Florey Adelaide Male Aging Study, a regionally representative cohort of Australian men aged 35-81 y. RESULTS: Mean values for whole-body lean mass (LM) and areal bone mineral density (aBMD) decreased, whereas mean values for abdominal fat mass (FM) and whole-body and abdominal percentage FM (%FM) increased with age. No significant age-related differences were found for whole-body FM. Multiple adjusted odds of being in the highest tertiles for whole-body and abdominal %FM decreased for smokers (63-71%) but increased with age group and for lowest energy (43-50%), carbohydrate (92-107%), and fiber (107%) intake tertiles. Multiple adjusted odds of being in the highest aBMD tertile decreased for lowest body mass (92%) and carbohydrate intake (63%) tertiles and for men aged > or = 75 y (78%) but increased for Australian birth (58%) and for participation in vigorous physical activities (82%). A lesão medular (LM) é uma patologia que gera inúmeras complicações, entre estas a mudança na composição corporal e a espasticidade. A alteração na composição corporal ocorre através da diminuição da massa magra e do aumento da massa gorda. Já a espasticidade ocorre em cerca de 70% dos casos e pode ser medida através do teste pendular. Um teste prático e objetivo, mas que não há na literatura uma posição padronizada para a sua realização. Portanto, a presente pesquisa tem três objetivos principais: investigar a influência de três diferentes posturas na espasticidade de indivíduos com LM; avaliar o efeito de tratamentos com estimulação elétrica neuromuscular (EENM) na espasticidade destes pacientes; avaliar a composição corporal de indivíduos com LM que praticam ou não atividade física. Para isso a pesquisa foi dividida em três etapas. Na primeira, 5 sujeitos com LM e 5 controles realizaram o teste pendular em três diferentes posturas: supino, semi-supino com 30° de flexão de tronco e sentado com 60° de flexão de tronco. Foi utilizado um eletrogoniômetro fixado na perna direita para medir os ângulos do joelho e oscilações da perna. BACKGROUND There is a paucity of data on body composition in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Alterations of fat and muscle may affect bone health, muscle performance, quality of life (QoL) and overall morbidity. AIMS To systematically review the literature on body composition in adults with IBD, and to discuss potential contributory factors and associations. METHODS A systematic search was performed in July 2012 of OVID SP MEDLINE, OVID EMBASE and National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central Medline (Limitations: English, humans, from 1992). A total of 19 articles comparing body composition in patients with IBD with healthy age- and sex-matched control populations were included in the primary analysis. RESULTS A total of 631 patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and 295 with ulcerative colitis (UC), mean age 37.1 (s.d. ± 9.2) years; 485 (52%) female, were reported upon. Data were heterogeneous and methodology varied. Compared with controls, a statistically significant reduction in body mass index (BMI) was reported in 37% of CD and 20% of UC patients; reduced fat-free mass in 28% CD and 13% UC patients, and reduced fat mass in 31% CD and 13% UC patients. Objetivo Comparar a antropometria ao exame de Raios-x de dupla varredura para estimativa da composição corporal de idosas diabéticas tipo 2. Métodos A composição corporal de 51 voluntárias de 60 a 70 anos de idade e índice de massa corporal de 19 a 43kg/m² foi avaliada pelas medidas antropométricas das dobras cutâneas do tríceps, suprailíaca e coxa e associadas ao exame de Raios-x de dupla varredura, considerado o padrão ouro. Os intervalos de concordância de Bland e Altman foram os valores do desvio-padrão do coeficiente de variação do exame de Raios-x de dupla varredura e os valores da antropometria deviam estar nessa faixa. Foram comparadas as médias (teste t de Student) e feita a correlação de Pearson. Resultados Os intervalos de concordância foram os seguintes: peso (kg) Média (M)=0,3, Desvio-Padrão (DP)=0,1, massa corporal magra (kg) M=3,0, DP=1,9, massa corporal gorda (kg) M=5,0, DP=3,1, percentual de gordura corporal (%GC) M=5,0, DP=3,1. INTRODUÇÃO: O ganho de peso associado ao uso de métodos contraceptivos contendo apenas progestágenos pode levar à descontinuação do uso. A avaliação da composição corporal (CC) pode auxiliar na compreensão e monitoração do ganho de peso. A mensuração da CC pela técnica de absorciometria de duplo feixe de raios-X (DEXA) permite quantificar os diferentes componentes da CC - massa gorda (MG), massa magra (MM). OBJETIVOS: Estimar a CC de mulheres na menacme e avaliar sua variação entre usuárias de acetato de medroxiprogesterona de depósito (AMPD) comparadas com usuárias de dispositivo intrauterino TCu380A (DIU TCu380A). SUJEITOS E MÉTODOS: Foram realizados dois estudos de avaliação da CC pela técnica DEXA. As participantes dos estudos foram selecionadas no Ambulatório de Planejamento Familiar do Departamento de Tocoginecologia da UNICAMP. Mestrado em Ciências da Fisioterapia; OBJECTIVES: Determine the chronic effects of exercise on body composition, functional capacity, exercise economy and dynamic muscle strength in adults with Down’s syndrome (DS). Explore differences, in electrodermal response to an acute exercise bout, between DS participants and healthy controls. Crossvalidate an energy expenditure estimating device for both, the DS and control group (CG). Crossvalidate an anthropometric equation for assessing body composition in DS individuals. METHODS: DS participants were assigned to one of the following groups: (1) indoor rowing aerobic program – EG1; (2) combined aerobic and dynamic strength conditioning program – EG2. Both exercise interventions had an absolute duration of 28 weeks. DS groups were compared with a paired CG before and after training for functional capacity and exercise economy. Body composition changes were determined by comparing the DS participants’ baseline and post-training values. OBJETIVOS: Os objetivos do presente estudo foram: 1) verificar se há diferenças nas variáveis de força, velocidade e potência aeróbia nos diferentes estágios de maturação biológica; 2) identificar quais as associações entre os componentes de composição corporal e desempenho físico ao longo do processo maturacional; 3) averiguar qual o comportamento do desempenho físico e composição corporal ao longo da maturação biológica em jovens atletas; 4) Demonstrar a utilidade do Indicador Somático como ferramenta para identificação da maturação biológica. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: 206 atletas do sexo masculino (14,69anos ± 2,31anos) praticantes de futebol de um clube de primeira divisão do estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Como variáveis antropométricas foram coletadas estatura total(EST), estatura tronco-cefálica(ETC), comprimento de membros inferiores(CMMII) e massa corporal total(MCT). Para a força foram coletadas as variáveis Taxa de Desenvolvimento de Força(TDF) e Força Máxima(FM). Quanto à velocidade de deslocamento cíclica as variáveis coletadas foram velocidade em 10m(V10) e velocidade em 40m(V40). Em relação ao aspecto aeróbio foi mensurada a Potência Aeróbia(PAER). A determinação da composição corporal é fundamental em estudos nutricionais e da regulação do crescimento. Entretanto, a determinação direta é impraticável como rotina experimental. O objetivo deste estudo foi testar metodologias para estimar a composição química corporal. A composição da secções da 9-10-11ª e da 10ª costelas foram empregadas para estimar a composição corporal de 31 tourinhos Nelore com média de 333,5 kg de peso (variação de 180,5-496,0) e 16,1% de lípideo no corpo vazio (variação de 10,6-22,1). A composição dos costelas, carcaça e corpo vazio foram obtidas através de moagem quantitativa de todos os tecidos. A composição da 9-10-11ª costelas foi um bom estimador da composição com r² de 0,99; 0,98; 0,98 e 0,91 para as estimativas de kg de água, lipídeo, proteína e cinzas com baixo desvio padrão da estimativa. Os resultados com a secção da 10ª costela foi similar (r² de 0,98, 0,98, 0,97 e 0,88 para as mesmas regressões). Dados são consistentes com resultados da literatura, entretanto os coeficientes lineares das regressões foram estatisticamente diferentes daqueles publicados para Bos taurus.
