Context-awareness has been regarded as an important feature for mobile services. However, only a few services are sensible to context and the features that are context-aware are still limited. Composition of Web services has received much interest in business-to-business or enterprise application, but not so much interest in business-to- consumer applications. This paper presents iCas, a novel architecture that enables the creation of context-aware services on the fly, and discusses its main components. We compare our approach with similar systems and point out the main differences and advantages. To explore context-awareness to support service composition, iCas uses SeCoM, a semantic model to represent context. The main parts of this model are explained as well the advantages of using a semantic model to represent context. We also describe the use of our approach in an university campus to provide pedagogical features and assist the socio-pedagogical interaction of various types of users.

A Computação Ubíqua está revolucionando a interação do ser-humano com os dispositivos computacionais ao disponibilizar tecnologias pouco intrusivas ao cotidiano das pessoas. A Computação Ciente de Contexto, um dos temas de pesquisa em Computação Ubíqua, tem contribuído para a construção de aplicações capazes de customizar-se e adaptar-se às necessidades do usuário sem a intervenção explícita deste. Suportar o desenvolvimento de aplicações Cientes de Contexto é um dos desafios da Computação Ubíqua. Desenvolvido no mesmo grupo de pesquisa que este trabalho está inserido, o Serviço Web Context Kernel, gerencia informações de contexto e explora as especificações e tecnologias da Web como plataforma de intercâmbio para a informação contextual. O trabalho aqui reportado teve como objetivo investigar a utilização de Serviços Web por meio do emprego da infra-estrutura Context Kernel na integração de aplicações em cenários de trabalho colaborativo e de aprendizado eletrônico. Como resultado, foi elaborado um conjunto de lições aprendidas provenientes do estudo e do emprego das especificações para Serviços Web. Aplicações sensíveis a contexto utilizam informações de contexto para fornecer serviços adaptados a usuários na realização de suas tarefas. Informação de contexto é qualquer informação considerada relevante para caracterizar entidades de uma interação usuário-computador, como a identidade e a localização de usuários. Esta tese trata a carência de uma abordagem que considere, em termos de processo de software, a complexidade de desenvolvimento de software sensível a contexto. Este trabalho apresenta uma proposta de infra-estrutura de software sensível ao contexto para a computação ubíqua (ubicomp) denominada Continuum. A área de ubicomp, também chamada de computação pervasiva, pressupõe uma forte integração com o mundo real, com foco no usuário e na manutenção de alta transparência. Para o desenvolvimento de aplicativos nesse cenário, é necessária uma infra-estrutura de software adequada. With the ubiquity and pervasiveness of mobile computing, together with the increasing number of social networks, end-users have learned to live and share all kinds of information about themselves. As an example, Facebook reports that it has currently 500 million active users, 200 million of which access its services on mobile systems; moreover, users that access Facebook through mobile applications are twice as active as non-mobile users, and it is used by 200 mobile operators in 60 countries [1]. More specific mobile platforms such as Foursquare, which unlike Facebook only collects location information, reports 6.5 million users worldwide, and also has a mobile presence (both with a web application and iPhone / Android applications) [2]. Procura-se assim compreender o papel do contexto de utilização na forma como o utilizador percepciona os serviços e a forma como a experiencia de utilização destes é modificada em função desse mesmo contexto. With the present work, we contribute to the study of context in organizational research by presenting the concept of Perceptions of social Context (PoC; Borgogni, 2001) and its operationalization. We situate our proposal within Johns’s model (2006) and we refer to discrete context, specifically privileging the social aspects of context. With social context we consider the social structure, that is the set of the most relevant constituencies internal to the organization (i.e., immediate supervisor, colleagues and top management), the way they fulfill their social roles and reciprocally interact at work (Bales, 1953; Steiner, 1972). Moreover, we focus on perceptions of the prototypical behaviors enacted by each social constituency to include the lens through which context can be viewed by individuals and the role played by the person in catching the more salient aspects of the observed phenomena. In fact, with our proposal we intend to connect the study of context with a psychological theory, that is Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986; Wood & Bandura, 1989). This dissertation studies the context-aware application with its proposed algorithms at client side. The required context-aware infrastructure is discussed in depth to illustrate that such an infrastructure collects the mobile user’s context information, registers service providers, derives mobile user’s current context, distributes user context among context-aware applications, and provides tailored services. The approach proposed tries to strike a balance between the context server and mobile devices. The context acquisition is centralized at the server to ensure the usability of context information among mobile devices, while context reasoning remains at the application level. Hence, a centralized context acquisition and distributed context reasoning are viewed as a better solution overall. The context-aware search application is designed and implemented at the server side. A new algorithm is proposed to take into consideration the user context profiles. By promoting feedback on the dynamics of the system, any prior user selection is now saved for further analysis such that it may contribute to help the results of a subsequent search. On the basis of these developments at the server side, various solutions are consequently provided at the client side. A proxy software-based component is set up for the purpose of data collection. Context information brings new opportunities for efficient and effective applications and services on mobile devices. Many existing work exploit the context dependency of mobile usage for specific applications, and show significant, quantified, performance gains by utilizing context. In order to be practical, such works often pay careful attention to the energy and processing costs of context awareness while attempting to maintain reasonable accuracy. These works also have to deal with the challenges of multiple sources of context, which can lead to a sparse training data set. Even with the abundance of such work, quantifying context-dependency and the relationship between context-dependency and performance achievements remains an open problem, and solutions to manage the and challenges of context awareness remain ad-hoc. Dey, in his paper “Towards a Better Understanding of Context and Context-Awareness”, argues that context-awareness is important in applications in which the user’s context changes rapidly, such as in mobile environments for ubiquitous computing. In his paper, Dey defines context as “any information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity”. In mobile environments, the entity is the mobile device itself. The device is both pervasive and person-­centric; it can continuously capture information about its users and their context through its sensors. The use of context has gained importance in ubiquitous computing since the 1990s, and the technique has recently been used in mobile devices to improve their uses and applications. For mobile context-awareness to become a reality, further research is required, particularly in the field of context prediction, which can expand the possibilities of context-awareness applications by expanding the applications’ situation awareness. In this PhD dissertation, we focus on the use of data obtained through mobile device sensors and user behavior to derive and predict context to improve mobility for both the users’ experience and for the applications’ functionality. We contribute to context-­aware mobile computing by showing how mobile devices can automatically learn from the user’s context and can adapt to improve the mobile experience. Context-awareness is a peculiar characteristic of an expanding set of applications that make use of a combination of restricted spatio-temporal locality and mobile communications, to deliver a variety of services. Opportunistic communications satisfy well the communication requirements of these applications, because they naturally incorporate context. Recently, an opportunistic communication paradigm called "Floating Content" was proposed, to support infrastructure-less, distributed content sharing. It aims at ensuring the availability of data within a certain geographic area called "anchor zone". In literature, the focus was on understanding the asymptotic properties of the floating lifetime, i.e., the duration of time for which content floats in the anchor zone. Instead, our objective is to characterize the performance of context-aware applications using floating content as a communication service. Approved for public release, distribution unlimited; Prior research in context-awareness has largely been dominated by a positivist notion of context. While this notion of context is sufficient for well-defined and focused applications, it suffers from two main shortcomings. First, it fails to consider context as a dynamic construct that arises from a user's interactions. Second, it lacks enough consideration for the role of the human actor in context-awareness. As a result, it is inadequate for dealing with the kind of high-level activities that people naturally engage in as part of their everyday lives. This dissertation proposes an activity-driven model for an interactional notion of context that addresses these shortcomings. In this model, context is defined as a relation between activities. The model was validated using a prototype implementation running on the Google Android mobile phone emulator. Results show that not only does this model improve the computing experience of the user, it also provides unique benefits that have not been available before, such as situation awareness, memory and mental aid, and an associative mode of information access. A rule-based method for discovering parent-child relationships between activities was also validated. Pervasive Computing presents an exciting realm where intelligent devices interact within the background of our environments to create a more intuitive experience for their human users. We demonstrate enabling context-awareness through our creation of a standardized context-management framework. Our framework moves towards device intelligence by supporting context-awareness. Context-awareness is what gives devices the ability to understand and exchange information about each other. Context information is used to determine device purpose, capabilities, location, current state, and other properties. The presentation aims at in one hand reviewing different models of “Context” used in context-based science curricula and teaching, in the other hand identifying different views of the concept “Learning environments” as used within science education literature as well as education more generally, and finally establishing relationships between the views of Context and Learning Environments to show their complementarities as the basis for a unified view. An experiment in human predictive learning was conducted with the goal of exploring the role of the informative value of the context where the information is learned on context dependency of performance. Three groups of participants received training on a discrimination between two cues (X and Y) while another cue (Z) was always followed by the outcome in context A. Discrimination was reversed in context B for group I (informative). Group NI1 received the same X-Y discrimination, while Group NI2 did not receive training with X and Y in context B. Subsequent extinction of Z proceeded faster in context B than in context A in group I, while no differences across contexts were found in groups NI1 and NI2. These results suggest that participants code context-independent information as context dependent when contexts are relevant for solving the task.

One experiment analyzed whether context dependency of a flavor-illness association depends on the extinction of a different flavor-illness association in rats. There were two sessions per day, one in context A and the other session in context B. A half of the rats were allowed to drink distilled water within context B, while the other half of the group spent the same amount of time in context B without access to water. In context A, half of the subjects received conditioning and extinction of flavor X, while the other half did not received extinction. Then conditioning of flavor Y was conducted for all rats in context A. Finally, testing of Y was conducted in context A for half of the rats, while the other half received the test in context B. Results shown that extinction of flavor X affected the recovery of subsequently acquired information about flavor Y regardless the treatment received in context B. This data is consistent with Atttentional Theory of Context Processing.
