Os sistemas de comunicação de dados sempre foram considerados um fator crítico na operação em tempo real do sistema elétrico de potência, devido a necessidade de decisões rápidas e precisas em pontos geograficamente distribuídos, desde usinas geradoras de energia até interfaces de usuários. Com a tecnologia digital, as medições, sinalizações e comandos são encapsulados em pacotes de dados que trafegam na rede da subestação, utilizando protocolos que estabelecem os formatos, as regras, os métodos, negociando e concordando no uso de parâmetros, que assegurem o transporte de informações entre dois ou mais dispositivos do sistema de automação da subestação. Uma vez que o número de protocolos de comunicação tem se tornado um desafio para usuários e fabricantes, criando ilhas de informação, o padrão IEC-61850 busca harmonizar a diversidade de equipamentos e fabricantes, e possibilitar a integração de dados para que o máximo dos benefícios possa ser extraído. A tecnologia de comunicação em redes sem fio em malha, com base no padrão IEEE 802.11, tem sido uma solução tecnológica relevante no cenário atual das redes sem fio. Entretanto, com a eliminação dos cabos para comunicação de dados, as redes sem fio em malha dependem de fonte de energia para energizar os pontos de acesso da rede, que nem sempre está disponível na forma cabeada no local da instalação. Neste cenário, sendo o Brasil um país situado em uma zona tropical com alta incidência anual de radiação solar, a possibilidade da utilização da conversão da energia solar em elétrica é uma alternativa para eliminar a dependência de fonte de energia cabeada dos pontos de acesso da rede sem fio em malha. Este trabalho apresenta considerações sobre o desenvolvimento de sistemas autônomos de comunicação sem fio em malha, alimentados por energia solar fotovoltaica, compactos e de fácil instalação em área urbana e rural. O recente crescimento da utilização de tecnologias de automação e eletrônica embarcada em máquinas e implementos agrícolas tem estabelecido uma nova prática na área agrícola. Estas novas práticas relacionadas com a agricultura de precisão (AP) têm demandado a utilização de sensores e redes de comunicação embarcadas para aquisição de dados e controle dos dispositivos em campo. A incompatibilidade entre equipamentos e formatos de dados tornou-se um grande obstáculo. A tendência global é de uso de sistemas padronizados de acordo com a norma ISO 11783 (também conhecida como ISOBUS) nos dispositivos, ou Electronic Control Unit (ECU), utilizados na produção agrícola. No Brasil, essas ferramentas ainda não são largamente aplicadas. O objetivo deste trabalho é sistematizar as informações necessárias dos procedimentos para comunicação de uma ECU do implemento com a ECU de trator de gerenciamento. Focou-se no desenvolvimento dos arquivos padrões necessários e no programa da ECU do implemento, e testes de validação da comunicação dos dispositivos via rede ISO 11873. Este projeto tem como objetivo a especicação de um enlace de comunicação digital para veículos aéreos não tripulados. Os principais desaos presentes no meio de transmissão serão evidenciados, assim como o impacto acarretado no sistema de comunicação. O projeto foi dividido entre a parte analógica e digital. A parte analógica tratará dos requisitos de potência para o devido funcionamento do canal através do procedimento de link budget. Modern agriculture demands investments in technology that allows the farmers to improve productivity and quality of their products, aiming to establish themselves in a competitive market. However, the high costs of acquiring and maintaining such technology may be an inhibiting factor to its spread and acceptance, mainly to a large number of small grain Brazilian farmers, who need low cost innovative technological solutions, suitable for their financial reality. Starting from this premise, this paper presents the development of a low cost prototype for monitoring the temperature and humidity of grains stored in silos, and the economic implications of cost/benefit ratio of innovative applications of low cost technology in the process of thermometry of grains. The prototype was made of two electronic units, one for acquisition and another one for data reception, as well as software, which offered the farmers more precise information for the control of aeration. The data communication between the electronic units and the software was reliable and both were developed using low cost electronic components and free software tools. The developed system was considered as potentially viable to small grain Brazilian farmers; it can be used in any type of small silos. It provided reduction of costs of installation and maintenance and also offered an easy expansion system; besides the low cost of development when compared to similar products available in the Brazilian market.

Foi desenvolvido neste trabalho um circuito de transmissão de dados pela rede de energia elétrica - PLC, que permite transmissão de dados em baixa velocidade, numa topologia de circuito que permite uma futura integração. O protótipo elaborado com componentes discretos apresenta operação compatível com um circuito típico de PLC. Os circuitos de acoplamento com a rede elétrica são amplamente discutidos. O sinal digital serialmente transmitido passa por um deslocamento de nível que permite ajuste de ganho e deslocamento do valor de sinal, posteriormente sendo aplicado a um VCO que possibilita efetuar de forma simples a modulação do tipo FSK contínua. Medidas de taxa de (BER) foram efetuadas e o resultado mostrado numérica e graficamente. Um circuito integrado monolítico para o VCO, parte do sistema, foi projetado, prevendo uma integração futura. Para isso foram feitas simulações no simulador de circuitos ADS e após no fluxo de projeto foi feito o layout do circuito integrado usando ferramentas de EDA Cadence. The intellectual products of today are now primarily created and distributed in digital format. Furthermore, the Internet has become a pervasive communication and sharing network. All of these factors naturally have led to concerns over the security of digital information. Among the many proposed solutions to such concerns, digital watermarking has proven to be unique by its not requiring a safe auxiliary communication channel. However, proposed watermarking techniques and attacks against such methods make the watermarking problem dynamic, complicated, and challenging. We show that several of the requirements in watermarking applications can be mapped onto convex constraints or can be closely approximated as convex constraints. Additionally, attempts to improve performance often result in disproportionately increased power and energy consumption. However, the increased performance and maximum frequency of the transistor allows us to build high-speed circuits specifically for on-chip communication. By incorporating the improving and emerging high-speed circuit technologies into the microprocessor design, it is possible to decrease the power and energy consumption, while simultaneously increasing system performance. This thesis focuses on exploiting and analyzing the architectural opportunities provided by incorporating high-speed communication circuits, specifically on-chip transmission lines and high-speed transceivers. In broad terms, the transmission lines are used for a globally shared medium on-chip interconnect, providing a low-latency, low-energy, packet-relay-free point-to-point link. The first World Congress on Communication for Development (WCCD) took place in Rome, Italy, on October 25-27, 2006. The main goal of the WCCD was to position and promote the field of Communication for Development in the overall agenda of development and international cooperation. Toward this end, three types of stakeholders, who rarely interact, gathered in Rome: academics, practitioners, and policy and decision makers. The interaction and exchange of perspectives among these three groups served to enhance the overall understanding of the field of Communication for Development by a broader audience.

In the most general sense, convergence is the integration of any traditionally segmented areas of communications systems. Convergence is happening today in Egypt, and is driven by the growth of digital media and packet data communication. In specific terms, it is essential that the Government of Egypt should create the environment in which convergence can occur without impediment. This will allow increased and risk-reduced investment in the ICTs sector, positively influence employment and industry growth, and enable Egypt to establish itself as a hub for content and services for the Arab world. Indirect impacts such as the effect on employment in the ICT sector and in the upstream content industry are more difficult to quantify without a detailed analysis of these individual industries in Egypt. However, the evidence from other countries indicates that these sectors could be significant in terms of the contribution to the economic output of the country and employment. If the loop iterations of a loop nest cannot be partitioned into independent sets, the data communication for data dependences are inevitable in order to execute them on parallel machines. These kind of loop nests are referred to as DOACROSS loop nests. This paper is concerned with compiler algorithms for parallelizing DOACROSS loop nests for distributed-memory multicomputers. We present a method that combines loop tiling, chain-based scheduling and indirect message passing to generate efficient message-passing parallel codes. In the area of Maritime Robotics a successful operational scenario would highly depend on clear acoustic communication-interaction of submersible Intelligent-Robot(s) and human-operator. The aim of this paper is to exhibit an analytical model to automatically recover underwater acoustic communication, digital-data transmission lost of the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) with human operator(s) in the loop. In this case an existing error-control code model based on Reed Solomon code is reviewed and tested. Then, the communication system of the AUV which requires a methodology of data loss recovery is discussed. Furthermore, the integration of a acoustic communication system and Reed Solomon code is discussed. This is followed by a simulation showing the robustness of an integrated data-communication system. The need for more efficient illumination systems has led to the proliferation of Solid-State Lighting (SSL) systems, which offer optimized power consumption. SSL systems are comprised of LED devices which are intrinsically fast devices and permit very fast light modulation. This, along with the congestion of the radio frequency spectrum has paved the path for the emergence of Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems. VLC uses free space to convey information by using light modulation. Notwithstanding, as VLC systems proliferate and cost competitiveness ensues, there are two important aspects to be considered. State-of-the-art VLC implementations use power demanding PAs, and thus it is important to investigate if regular, existent Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) circuits can be adapted for VLC use. A 28 W buck regulator was implemented using a off-the-shelf LED Driver integrated circuit, using both series and parallel dimming techniques. Results show that optical clock frequencies up to 500 kHz are achievable without any major modification besides adequate component sizing. This report is part of an ongoing study of the measurement of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector of Egypt's economy. This report forms part of the second amendment to a reimbursable technical assistance (RTA) program delivered by the Global Information and Communication Technology (GICT) department of the World Bank to the Information Centre of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT-IC) of the government of Egypt. This report outlines the results of a several visits to the region, a survey conducted, and methods of data collection. The objectives were: to analyze the new results of the FDI questionnaire and make recommendations to refine the methodology and sampling framework; to generate an estimate of the true level of FDI in Egypt's ICT sector, and to continue work towards establishing an ongoing process for the regular data collection and reporting of FDI data by providing training and relevant tools, in collaboration with relevant ministries and other institutions.

Efforts to promote general awareness of public health issues - the traditional goal of information, education, and communication (IEC) programs have built a good foundation for population, health, and nutrition (PHN) activities. So communication programs must be designed to support behavior change in key constituencies delivering the message not just to potential clients, but to health providers as well. This document accompanies a toolkit designed to help Bank task managers plan and supervise the implementation of communication activities in PHN projects. It reviews the basic principles of communication for behavior change, presenting a step-by-stop guide to planning and implementing communication activities and linking those steps to the Bank's project cycle. The toolkit contains a set of practical modules, including: communication research approaches for bank projects; a guide to communication indicators; sample term of reference for Bank and Borrower consultants; guide questions for assessing organizational capacity; sample budget and implementation plan; and case studies of best practice in behavior change communication.

Wireless sensor networks are an important technology for making distributed autonomous measures in hostile or inaccessible environments. Among the challenges they pose, the way data travel among them is a relevant issue since their structure is quite dynamic. The operational topology of such devices can often be described by complex networks. In this work, we assess the variation of measures commonly employed in the complex networks literature applied to wireless sensor networks. Four data communication strategies were considered: geometric, random, small-world, and scale-free models, along with the shortest path length measure. The sensitivity of this measure was analyzed with respect to the following perturbations: insertion and removal of nodes in the geometric strategy; and insertion, removal and rewiring of links in the other models. The assessment was performed using the normalized Kullback-Leibler divergence and Hellinger distance quantifiers, both deriving from the Information Theory framework. The movement of data (communication) between levels of a memory hierarchy, or between parallel processors on a network, can greatly dominate the cost of computation, so algorithms that minimize communication are of interest. Motivated by this, attainable lower bounds for the amount of communication required by algorithms were established by several groups for a variety of algorithms, including matrix computations. Prior work of Ballard-Demmel-Holtz-Schwartz relied on a geometric inequality of Loomis and Whitney for this purpose. In this paper the general theory of discrete multilinear Holder-Brascamp-Lieb (HBL) inequalities is used to establish communication lower bounds for a much wider class of algorithms. In some cases, algorithms are presented which attain these lower bounds. Several contributions are made to the theory of HBL inequalities proper. The optimal constant in such an inequality for torsion-free Abelian groups is shown to equal one whenever it is finite. Bennett-Carbery-Christ-Tao had characterized the tuples of exponents for which such an inequality is valid as the convex polyhedron defined by a certain finite list of inequalities. In a "vertical" treatment, one insider unilaterally sets the harm-reduction strategy; the other can only accept or quit. In a "horizontal" treatment, the insiders decide by consensus. Our 2-by-2 design also controls for communication effects. In our data, communication makes vertical firms more ethical; voice appears to mitigate "responsibility-alleviation" in that subordinates with voice feel responsible for what their firms do. This paper discusses the data analysis process around seven critical topics: a) Distinguishing between a statistical model, a statistical technique and a statistical receipt; b) Sampling and Design’s implications for statistical validity; c) Complementarities and distinctions between data description and hypothesis testing; d) How statistical hypothesis are framed by the statistical model and vice versa; e) relevance of preliminary analysis of data; f) Fisher’s and Neyman-Pearson’sperspectives of statistical inference; g) Data presentation as a communication matter.; Este artigo discute o processo de análise de dados em  sete tópicos: a) modelos estatísticos, técnicas estatísticas e diferenciação de “receita estatística”; b) a associação da validade das conclusões estatísticas ao processo de delineamento e amostragem; c) a diferença e complementaridade da descrição de dados e do teste de hipóteses; d) como as hipóteses se relacionam com os testes estatísticos a realizar; e) a análise preliminar de dados e sua relevância; f) teste de hipótese na perspectiva de Fisher e de Neyman e Pearson; g) a apresentação dos dados como um processo comunicacional, e vantagens do uso de normas (APA).
