The globalization of healing systems is a dance of cultural awareness and cultural dominance that has arisen throughout history. With the development of greater communication and interest in whole-systems approaches to healing, the opportunity for the development of a global perspective on healing has emerged with new life force. The birth of integrative holistic healing systems in the West, such as naturopathic, homeopathic, anthroposophic, integral and functional medicine, and others, echoes the ocean of wisdom present in traditional healing systems, such as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In working to integrate the lessons from these systems, we see the inextricable link between man and the natural world, we work to understand the root cause of disease, we focus on the whole person to return balance, and we use empiric observation in large populations over time to grasp the interrelationships inherent in the whole-systems view of illness and wellness.

This study analyzes the interrelationship between local benefits and global environment benefits in the Global Environment Facility (GEF) strategies and projects in order to: Enhance GEF policies, strategies, and project design and implementation so these can effectively promote the potential for local gains in those global environmental programs where actors need to be mobilized for long-term support of sound environmental management, costs incurred by local communities for supplying global environmental goods need to be reduced, and possible negative impacts need to be ameliorated. Strengthen GEF monitoring and evaluation policies and processes to develop indicators for, and enhance the tracking of, local benefits and negative impacts. Expand the body of existing operational knowledge of good practices and experiences germane to pursuing global environmental issues and of constraints or fallacies to be avoided in operations. Disseminate widely the most valuable lessons of existing experience and show how these lessons can be implemented in future GEF operations.

The purpose of this sourcebook is to pull together into a single document a collection of common sense tips and recommendations based on actual practices and experience around the world. The sourcebook aims first and foremost to help strengthen Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) capacity at the national and sub-national levels, and to ensure a consistency of approach and methodology so that, at the global level, sufficient reliable and timely information can be accessed from the different countries and used to make cross-country comparisons and to calculate development indicators at the global level. The sourcebook is specifically targeted towards countries where conditions are less-than-ideal, particularly with respect to the availability of relevant information. The sourcebook also shows how a service delivery approach can be used to select indicators which can generate useful, easy-to-measure early outcome measures. It suggests that greater use be made of qualitative indicators, such as access, use and satisfaction. The sourcebook devotes considerable attention to the need for a strong statistical infrastructure and reviews the range of different statistical instruments available.

This Policy Paper collects a set of contributions given and discussed at the Conference on “Global Administrative Law: an Italian Perspective”, European University Institute, Global Governance Programme, 24 February 2012. The purpose of the conference was to present the work of a group of Italian scholars who have, to date, written more than a hundred articles or books on Global Administrative Law (GAL), and have been or are engaged in around ten collective enterprises on the subject. After a brief introduction by Sabino Cassese, in which the main features of GAL and its significance are examined, nine contributions deal with a high number of legal issues raised by globalization and global governance. All of them adopt a GAL approach in order to tame and frame relevant topics such as the role of administrative law beyond the State (Stefano Battini), courts acting as global regulators (Elisa D’Alterio), the global governance after the financial crisis (Giulio Napolitano), the global financial regulation (Maurizia De Bellis), global rules of public procurement (Hilde Caroli Casavola) and procurement regimes of international organizations (Elisabetta Morlino), global sports law (Lorenzo Casini), the relationships between GAL and EU administrative law (Edoardo Chiti) the transgovernmental power at the European and global level (Mario Savino). This Policy Paper aims at contributing to one of the most significant intellectual enterprise of 21st century...

IMPORTANCE: Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide. Current estimates of cancer burden in individual countries and regions are necessary to inform local cancer control strategies. OBJECTIVE: To estimate mortality, incidence, years lived with disability (YLDs), years of life lost (YLLs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for 28 cancers in 188 countries by sex from 1990 to 2013. EVIDENCE REVIEW: The general methodology of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2013 study was used. Cancer registries were the source for cancer incidence data as well as mortality incidence (MI) ratios. Sources for cause of death data include vital registration system data, verbal autopsy studies, and other sources. The MI ratios were used to transform incidence data to mortality estimates and cause of death estimates to incidence estimates. Cancer prevalence was estimated using MI ratios as surrogates for survival data; YLDs were calculated by multiplying prevalence estimates with disability weights, which were derived from population-based surveys; YLLs were computed by multiplying the number of estimated cancer deaths at each age with a reference life expectancy; and DALYs were calculated as the sum of YLDs and YLLs. FINDINGS: In 2013 there were 14.9 million incident cancer cases...

Higher education institutions across the United States have developed global learning initiatives to support student achievement of global awareness and global perspective, but assessment options for these outcomes are extremely limited. A review of research for a global learning initiative at a large, Hispanic-serving, urban, public, research university in South Florida found a lack of instruments designed to measure global awareness and global perspective in the context of an authentic performance assessment. This quasi-experimental study explored the development of two rubrics for the global learning initiative and the extent to which evidence supported the rubrics’ validity and reliability. One holistic rubric was developed to measure students’ global awareness and the second to measure their global perspective. The study utilized a pretest/posttest nonequivalent group design. Multiple linear regression was used to ascertain the rubrics’ ability to discern and compare average learning gains of undergraduate students enrolled in two global learning courses and students enrolled in two non-global learning courses. Parallel pretest/posttest forms of the performance task required students to respond to two open-ended questions...

This report summarizes the findings of a long and meticulous journey of data gathering and analysis to quantify the health losses from road deaths and injuries worldwide, as part of the path-finding Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. It is important, first, to acknowledge the profound contribution made by the lead authors and global team of injury prevention professionals to estimate the disease burden of road trauma, before absorbing their findings and recommendations. Without their dedication and tenacity, the way forward would be less certain. The first GBD study, published nearly two decades ago, signaled an emerging road safety crisis in developing regions of the world. It triggered a remarkable program of global advocacy that culminated in the United Nations decade of action for road safety and global plan to bring road safety outcomes under control in these regions by 2020. However, limited investment has been mobilized so far to implement the UN initiative. The second GBD studies, and related analyses presented in this report...

The report focuses on the two decades of the World Bank - Global Environment Facility (GEF) partnership with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries. This partnership has had a global environmental impact by working both at the local and national level and engaging all relevant partners and stakeholders. In addition, many GEF financed operations stand as examples of what a more holistic approach can achieve in terms of innovation and catalyzing greater investment. These operations have also delivered important social benefits such as job creation, enhanced economic and social inclusion, and strengthened governance capabilities. Presently the region s most pressing environmental challenges stem from rapid urbanization and its resulting infrastructure needs, industrial pollution, overexploitation of scarce water resources, the unsustainable management of fragile ecosystem resources and vulnerability to climate variability and climate change. Decision makers working to address these problems also face many tightly linked and urgent social issues. These issues include meeting the aspirations of a quickly growing urban youth population; giving voice to gender and women s issues; finding ways to spur job growth; and reversing the poor provision of basic services. This publication also points to opportunities for further World Bank - GEF cooperation in support of green growth.

341 p.; Libro Electrónico; This book is offered for consideration and critical reflection primarily by political science scholars throughout the world from beginning students to professors emeriti. Neither age nor erudition seems to make much difference in the prevailing assumption that killing is an inescapable part of the human condition that must be accepted in political theory and practice. The long history of nonviolent cross-border interventions in situations of conflict constitutes a rich source of practical experience...

The global solar irradiation (Hg) is variable major in several subject areas: Agriculture, Engineering, Climate and Renewable Energy. The total amount of incident Hg on the earth's surface can be accounted directly or indirectly. Directly is obtained from measurements made with operational instruments (pyranometers) and indirectly by estimating, by using empirical models. In this work, ten empirical models are used (nine based on air temperature and one in the sunshine duration) to estimate the global solar irradiation in eight sites from to Alagoas - Brazil, in scale hourly, daily and monthly. For models based on air temperature, two temperature regimes (air thermal amplitudes) (∆T1 and ∆T2) were evaluated to verify the influence on the models. Have been used air temperature, sunshine duration (n) and global solar irradiation (Hg) data, from September 2007 to December 2008 for fit of the models, and to validate the use data in 2009. The global solar irradiations (Hg) (MJm-2) were calculated from the integrations of the global solar irradiance (Rg) (Wm-2). In terms of global solar irradiation hourly average monthly (Hgh), the coefficients of the models shown to be dependent on the study site. The coefficients generated with daily data and monthly averages showed no difference to ΔT1 or ΔT2. For the model based on the sunshine duration (n)...
