Current mainstream models of successful ageing have received criticism in the literature, especially Rowe and Kahn’s (1987) model, the most widely accepted theory of successful ageing in gerontology. A key aim for the present study is to challenge the key mainstream theories of successful ageing. This thesis asks whether the dominant perspectives on successful ageing can be challenged by directly consulting older women about how they see the roles of religion and spirituality in ageing well and by unpacking specific problems identified in the literature. Criticisms include the lack of consultation with ol successful ageing researchers. A second issue is the negative way that the last phase of life, or ‘Fourth Age’ (Laslett, 1989), is represented in successful ageing theories and also in the field of gerontology and society generally. The leading models of successful ageing from Rowe and Kahn and Baltes and Baltes (1990) postulate that successful ageing is contingent on certain capacities and that successful ageing comes to an end when health and good functioning, or the capacity to employ adaptive strategies, fails. Objectives: Researchers have pointed to significant omissions in Rowe and Kahn's model of successful ageing and their lack of consultation with older people. This study examined late mid-life and older women's views of successful ageing. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 14 women aged 60–89 years. Participants who identified themselves as spiritual and religious, or spiritual only and not religious, were recruited using the 'snowball technique'. Thematic analyses were conducted within an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis framework. Results: Participants described multiple dimensions of successful ageing with 15 subthemes grouped into three overarching categories of personal agency, social value and quality of life/quality of death. The present study tested a nomological net of work engagement that was derived from its extant research. Two of the main work engagement models that have been presented and empirically tested in the literature, the JD-R model and Kahn's model, were integrated to test the effects that job features and personal characteristics can have on work engagement through the psychological conditions of meaningfulness, safety, and availability. In this study, safety refers to psychological perceptions of safety and not workplace safety behaviors. The job features that were tested in this model included person-job fit, autonomy, co-worker relations, supervisor support, procedural justice, and interactional justice, while the personal characteristics consisted of self-consciousness, self-efficacy, extraversion, and neuroticism. This study examined whether oldest-old adults are successful agers. Three hundred and six octogenarians and centenarians of Phase III of the Georgia Centenarian Study participated in this study. A first model examined Rowe and Kahn's successful aging model (Rowe and Khan (1997 and 1998)) including the probability of disease, physical or cognitive capacity, and engagement with life. All three components were applied to assess how many oldest-old adults satisfied all three criteria. The result showed about 15% of octogenarians (15.1%), and none of centenarians satisfied all three components of successful aging. Consequently, a second alternative model focused on psychosocial aspects including three different components: subjective health, perceived economic status, and happiness. Different from Rowe and Kahn's successful aging model, a total of 62.3% of octogenarians and 47.5% of centenarians satisfied all three components of the alternative model of successful aging. The results suggest that additional criteria of successful aging should be considered thereby expanding the concepts and multidimensional aspects of successful aging among oldest-old adults.

In a seminal article, Kahn has introduced the notion of process network and given a semantics for those using Scott domains whose elements are (possibly infinite) sequences of values. This model has since then become a standard tool for studying distributed asynchronous computations. From the beginning, process networks have been drawn as particular graphs, but this syntax is never formalized. We take the opportunity to clarify it by giving a precise definition of these graphs, that we call nets. The resulting category is shown to be a fixpoint category, i.e. a cartesian category which is traced wrt the monoidal structure given by the product, and interestingly this structure characterizes the category: we show that it is the free fixpoint category containing a given set of morphisms, thus providing a complete axiomatics that models of process networks should satisfy. We then use these tools to build a model of networks in which data vary over a continuous time, in order to elaborate on the idea that process networks should also be able to encompass computational models such as hybrid systems or electric circuits. We relate this model to Kahn's semantics by introducing a third model of networks based on non-standard analysis, whose elements form an internal complete partial order for which many properties of standard domains can be reformulated. We prove tight upper bounds on the logarithmic derivative of the independence and matching polynomials of d-regular graphs. For independent sets, this theorem is a strengthening of Kahn's result that a disjoint union of $K_{d,d}$'s maximizes the number of independent sets of a bipartite d-regular graph, Galvin and Tetali's result that the independence polynomial is maximized by the same, and Zhao's extension of both results to all d-regular graphs. For matchings, this shows that the matching polynomial and the total number of matchings of a d-regular graph are maximized by a disjoint union of $K_{d,d}$'s. Using this we prove the asymptotic upper matching conjecture of Friedland, Krop, Lundow, and Markstrom. In probabilistic language, our main theorems state that for all d-regular graphs and all $\lambda$, the occupancy fraction of the hard-core model and the edge occupancy fraction of the monomer-dimer model with fugacity $\lambda$ are maximized by $K_{d,d}$. The main goal of this paper has a double purpose. On the one hand, we propose a new definition in order to compute the fractal dimension of a subset respect to any fractal structure, which completes the theory of classical box-counting dimension. Indeed, if we select the so called natural fractal structure on each euclidean space, then we will get the box-counting dimension as a particular case. Recall that box-counting dimension could be calculated over any euclidean space, although it can be defined over any metrizable one. Nevertheless, the new definition we present can be computed on an easy way over any space admitting a fractal structure. Thus, since a space is metrizable if and only if it supports a starbase fractal structure, our model allows to classify and distinguish a much larger number of topological spaces than the classical definition. On the other hand, our aim consists also of studying some applications of effective calculation of the fractal dimension over a kind of contexts where the box-counting dimension has no sense, like the domain of words, which appears when modeling the streams of information in Kahn's parallel computation model. Effective measure of employee engagement is relevant to human resource development (HRD) theory and practice. We build on Kahn's (1990 OpenURL London School of Economics &, Psychological conditions of personal engagement and disengagement at work, Academy of Management Journal 33: 692–724) theory and develop a model of engagement that has three requirements: a work-role focus, activation and positive affect. This model was operationalized in a new measure: the Intellectual, Social, Affective Engagement Scale (ISA Engagement Scale) comprising three facets: intellectual, social and affective engagement. Data from Study 1 (278 employees from a manufacturing organization) showed that the scale and its sub-scales have internal reliability. Study 2 examined data from 683 employees in a retail organization. The internal reliability was confirmed and construct validity was demonstrated. The new scale had positive associations with three theoretically and empirically important outcomes: task performance, organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) and turnover intentions. Implications are considered for academic enquiry into the engagement process, and for HRD practices that enhance the experience of work.
