Com o crescimento da utilização das redes de computadores e também o aumento da utilização das redes de dispositivos para a automação, torna-se cada vez mais atrativo se pensar em uma solução que integre essas tecnologias. Em cada uma das áreas se observa um aumento da utilização da tecnologia LonWorks em redes distribuídas de dispositivos, e a consolidação do Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) como um protocolo padrão para o gerenciamento das redes de computadores. Neste trabalho foi desenvolvido um agente proxy SNMP, capaz de auxiliar no gerenciamento de uma rede de automação baseada na tecnologia LonWorks através do uso de ferramentas já disponíveis no mercado para a realização do gerenciamento das redes de computadores. Esse tipo de solução possibilita que uma mesma equipe possa gerenciar as duas estruturas de rede, através de um mesmo sistema, facilitando a interação entre os dispositivos e reduzindo o custo atrelado à manutenção das equipes. Com o crescimento em número e diversidade dos componentes das redes de computadores, surge a necessidade de buscar uma maneira consistente de realizar seu gerenciamento para, com isso, manter toda sua estrutura funcionando de forma suave e atendendo às necessidades de seus usuários e às expectativas de seus administradores. Em aspectos gerais, as abordagens centralizadas têm se mostrado inadequadas para o gerenciamento de redes de computadores com um grande número de nós ou com grande diversidade de dispositivos. A avaliação do comportamento das redes de computadores através de métricas de desempenho é útil para avaliação de protocolos, para o aperfeiçoamento de aplicações, na escolha de conteúdo, entre outros. A obtenção destas métricas, porém, continua sendo uma tarefa complexa porque na maioria das vezes não se tem instrumentos adequados para tal. O desempenho de uma rede é fácil de ser obtido quando as conexões envolvidas estão limitadas a uma Intranet, pois os administradores têm acesso irrestrito a todos os equipamentos envolvidos. Por outro lado, quando os equipamentos pertencerem a domínios administrativos diferentes, a avaliação de desempenho passa a ser uma tarefa difícil de ser efetuada. As infra-estruturas de medição de desempenho foram propostas como uma forma de dotar as redes de computadores com instrumentos que facilitem a mensuração do desempenho. Atualmente há grande investimento por parte das empresas em sistemas que não podem parar e, conseqüentemente, em sistemas de gerenciamento para perceber a ocorrência de falhas ou prevê-las e evitar que elas aconteçam. Para amenizar os efeitos de falhas no fornecimento de energia elétrica, que são ainda comuns no país e em boa parte do mundo, são utilizados os no-breaks. Esses equipamentos são projetados para garantir o fornecimento de energia por um tempo definido e limitado nos momentos em que a concessionária de energia elétrica interrompe esse fornecimento. O objetivo principal do presente trabalho é investigar uma solução de gerenciamento de no-breaks que possui como grande diferencial a utilização do paradigma de gerenciamento distribuído por delegação, com o uso do protocolo SNMP, apresentando as vantagens desse paradigma. A proliferação de redes de computadores de todos os portes, e a massiva integração com um vasto número de outros componentes eletrônicos, tais como telefones celulares, televisões digitais, eletrodomésticos, relógios de pulsos, entre outros, eleva o gerenciamento destas redes complexas a uma importância como nunca vista antes, tornando-o parte vital de uma organização que deseja atingir um determinado padrão de comportamento global. Neste ínterim, observamos um também crescente número de ferramentas para auxiliar senão totalmente, pelo menos em parte essa tarefa, cada um com suas características próprias, suas vantagens e desvantagens, seu custo e seu benefício. Computer networks have evolved to accommodate a wide variety of services, such as streaming of high quality videos and delay-sensitive content delivery. These services have increased the demand for features not originally considered in the Internet. Aiming to address novel network demands quickly, some researchers proposed Programmable Networks, in which network devices behavior can be changed using applications. Notwithstanding, such behavior might not be a consensus between computer network stakeholders. The emergence of Virtualized Networks overcame this issue by allowing the coexistence of multiple virtual networks on the same physical infrastructure. Finally, the convergence of programmability and virtualization techniques are explored within a third concept, the Programmable Virtual Networks (PVN). Faced with this new reality, network administrators are no longer just looking at network devices. They are looking at a system made of virtual devices and applications that define each virtual network behavior. In this work, an user friendly software application is proposed, built on top of a network optimization framework, aiming to make traffic engineering an easier task for IP network administrators. This framework was developed in the Center of Computer Science and Technology (CCTC) of the University of Minho and allows the improvement of quality of service levels in TCP/IP based networks, by configuring the routing weights of link-state protocols, such as OSPF. This goal is achieved mainly using Evolutionary Algorithms as the optimization engines, while networks are represented using graph-based mathematical models. These methods allow the optimization of distinct cost functions, using penalties that take into account several measures of network performance such as network congestion and average end-to-end delays. The main goal of this work is to create a structured graphical user interface to support the optimization framework, enabling the user to simulate the effects of diferente OSPF settings, to obtain highly optimized configurations and to compare different weight setting optimization methods.

In this thesis, present a system design that enables Savants to automatically configure both their network settings and their required application programs when connected to an intelligent data management and application system. Savants are intelligent routers in a large network used to manage the data and events related to communications with electronic identification tags [10]. The ubiquitous nature of the identification tags and the access points that communicate with them requires an information and management system that is equally ubiquitous and able to deal with huge volumes of data. The Savant systems were designed to be such a ubiquitous information and management system. Deploying any ubiquitous system is difficult, and automation is required to streamline its deployment and improve system management, reliability, and performance. My solution to this auto-configuration problem uses NETCONF as a standard language and protocol for configuration communication among Savants. It also uses the Content-Addressable Network (CAN) as a discovery service to help Savants locate configuration information, since a new Savant may not have information about the network structure. As a result, the growth of network centric operations and increased operational tempo in the cyber domain has created a significant training gap for tactical network administrators. This research suggests that a computer-based environment can integrate the operational network and a training network into the same system to allow tactical network administrators to concurrently administer the network and conduct realistic training on an identical virtual network. A review of commercial and open-source tools identifies the baseline for an architecture and framework for this system. The architecture consists of a modular design comprised of mapping, awareness, and virtualization modules. The framework integrates these modules by defining a network topology format, programming language, graphical user interface solution, and virtualization solution. Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited; The performance of network management tools for SONET/SDH networks subject to the load conditions is studied and discussed in this thesis. Specifically, a SONET network which consists of four CISCO ONS 15454s, managed by a CISCO Transport Manager, is set up in the Advanced Network Laboratory of the Naval Postgraduate School. To simulate a realistic data transfer environment for the analysis, Smartbits Avalanche software is deployed to simulate multiple client-server scenarios in the SONET network. Traffic from the management channel is then captured using a packet sniffer. Queuing analysis on the captured data is performed with particular emphasis on properties of self-similarity. In particular, the Hurst parameter which determines the captured traffic's degree of self-similarity is estimated using the Variance-Index plot technique. Link utilization is also derived from the computation of first-order statistics of the captured traffic distribution. The study shows that less management data was exchanged when the SONET network was fully loaded. In addition, it is recommended that CTM 4.6 be used to manage not more than 1552 NEs for safe operation. Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) has been the internet standard since specified nearly 27 years ago. Although IPv4 has served us well the ever-growing demand for additional IP addresses has lead to the introduction of a new IP version, IPv6. Supported by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for more than 10 years, IPv6 is recognized as a critical enabling technology throughout the federal government. IPv6 is also necessary in order to support the continuing growth of global communication requirements within Special Operations Forces (SOF), and ensure that the global Internet can continue to support a growing international user base and the increasing number of IP-enabled devices. Although numerous network management studies have been conducted few have concentrated on tactical or edge network management. Furthermore, few studies identify potential management tools supporting usability within the GIG. In coordinated effort with our primary sponsor, U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has developed the Tactical Network Topology (TNT) field experimentation program aimed at providing solutions for today's battle space. Approved for public release, distribution unlimited; Policy based network management has an increasing importance depending on the increasing importance of distributed large networks and the growing number of services that run on them. Policy languages, which enable users define policies in a formal language, are one of the main tools of policy management. Even though there are policy languages like PFDL or RPSL, none of them has the capability of a robust conflict detection and resolution focused on policy. A new Policy Language, Path-based Policy Language (PPL), has been developed recently. It encompasses as many of the features addressed in the other policy languages as possible, as well as providing means for testing policies for consistency and defining both static and dynamic policies. The most important, PPL provides the ability to detect and resolve conflicts between by translating policy rules into formal logic statement and checking them with a Prolog program. Even though in theory PPL seems to be a very high performance policy language, its current compiler has a performance bottleneck. In some cases the PPL compiler can not finish compilation and runs forever without returning any conflict results. This thesis focuses on the PPL compiler's performance bottleneck and introduces solutions speeding up the PPL compiler. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is an important technology that can be used to provide new data sets for many applications ranging from healthcare monitoring to military surveillance. Due to the increasing popularity of WSNs, user demands have evolved as well. To achieve the end-to-end goals and requirements of the applications, managing the resources of the network becomes a critical task. Cognitive networking techniques for resource management have been proposed in recent years to provide performance gains over traditional design methodologies. However, even though several tools have been considered in cognitive network design, they show limitations in their adaptability, complexity, and their ability to consider multiple conflicting goals. Thus, this thesis proposes novel cognitive solutions for WSNs that include a reasoning machine and a learning protocol. Weighted Cognitive Maps (WCM) and Q-Learning are identified as suitable tools for addressing the aforementioned challenges and designing the cognitive solutions due to their ability to consider conflicting objectives with low complexity. Several studies have considered control theory tools for traffic control in communication networks, as for example the congestion control issue in IP (Internet Protocol) routers. In this paper, we propose to design a linear observer for time-delay systems to address the traffic monitoring issue in TCP/AQM (Transmission Control Protocol/Active Queue Management) networks. Due to several propagation delays and the queueing delay, the set TCP/AQM is modeled as a multiple delayed system of a particular form. Hence, appropriate robust control tools as quadratic separation are adopted to construct a delay dependent observer for TCP flows estimation. Note that, the developed mechanism enables also the anomaly detection issue for a class of DoS (Denial of Service) attacks. At last, simulations via the network simulator NS-2 and an emulation experiment validate the proposed methodology.

The introduction of SDN in large-scale IP provider networks is still an open issue and different solutions have been suggested so far. In this paper we propose a hybrid approach that allows the coexistence of traditional IP routing with SDN based forwarding within the same provider domain. The solution is called OSHI - Open Source Hybrid IP/SDN networking as we have fully implemented it combining and extending Open Source software. We discuss the OSHI system architecture and the design and implementation of advanced services like Pseudo Wires and Virtual Switches. In addition, we describe a set of Open Source management tools for the emulation of the proposed solution using either the Mininet emulator or distributed physical testbeds. We refer to this suite of tools as Mantoo (Management tools). Mantoo includes an extensible web-based graphical topology designer, which provides different layered network "views" (e.g. from physical links to service relationships among nodes). The suite can validate an input topology, automatically deploy it over a Mininet emulator or a distributed SDN testbed and allows access to emulated nodes by opening consoles in the web GUI. Source data for computer network security analysis takes different forms (alerts, incidents, logs) and each source may be voluminous. Due to the challenge this presents for data management, this has often lead to security stovepipe operations which focus primarily on a small number of data sources for analysis with little or no automated correlation between data sources (although correlation may be done manually). We seek to address this systemic problem. In previous work we developed a unified correlated logging system (UCLog) that automatically processes alerts from different devices. We take this work one step further by presenting the architecture and applications of UCLog+ which adds the new capability to correlate between alerts and incidents and raw data located on remote logs. UCLog+ can be used for forensic analysis including queries and report generation but more importantly it can be used for near-real-time situational awareness of attack patterns in progress. This results in the coexistence of many management systems with different managing functions and services across enterprises. Incompatibility of different management systems makes management of whole system a very complex and often complicated job. Ideally, it is necessary to implement centralized metalevel management across distributed heterogeneous systems and their underlying supporting network systems where the information flow and guidance is provided via a single console or single operating panels which integrates all the management functions in spite of their individual protocols and structures. This paper attempts to provide a novel network management tool architecture which supports heterogeneous managements across many different architectural platforms. Furthermore, an architectural approach to integrate heterogeneous network is proposed. Small business is in need of a more efficient solution for managing their Information Technology support needs. Due to small business's need for custom solutions, IT service providers must dedicate highly skilled personnel to client business sites, incurring high overhead costs and restricting their ability to apply their employee base to multiple clients. This restriction in cost and flexibility places a high cost burden on small business clients, straining an already limited budget. The use of remote IT support technology may provide the basis for a solution to these problems. By applying remote technology, an IT provider could centralize their employee workforce, managing clients from a single location rather than dedicating manpower to client sites. If the technology was available to support such a model, this change in the methodology could result in a more manageable solution. Small business had the highest propensity to outsource IT support for the management of their hardware, software, web hosting, server/host management, networking, and security requirements.
