Multidimensional Visualization techniques are invaluable tools for analysis of structured and unstructured data with variable dimensionality. This paper introduces PEx-Image-Projection Explorer for Images-a tool aimed at supporting analysis of image collections. The tool supports a methodology that employs interactive visualizations to aid user-driven feature detection and classification tasks, thus offering improved analysis and exploration capabilities. The visual mappings employ similarity-based multidimensional projections and point placement to layout the data on a plane for visual exploration. In addition to its application to image databases, we also illustrate how the proposed approach can be successfully employed in simultaneous analysis of different data types, such as text and images, offering a common visual representation for data expressed in different modalities.

Visual analysis of social networks is usually based on graph drawing algorithms and tools. However, social networks are a special kind of graph in the sense that interpretation of displayed relationships is heavily dependent on context. Context, in its turn, is given by attributes associated with graph elements, such as individual nodes, edges, and groups of edges, as well as by the nature of the connections between individuals. In most systems, attributes of individuals and communities are not taken into consideration during graph layout, except to derive weights for force-based placement strategies. This paper proposes a set of novel tools for displaying and exploring social networks based on attribute and connectivity mappings. These properties are employed to layout nodes on the plane via multidimensional projection techniques. For the attribute mapping, we show that node proximity in the layout corresponds to similarity in attribute, leading to easiness in locating similar groups of nodes. The projection based on connectivity yields an initial placement that forgoes force-based or graph analysis algorithm, reaching a meaningful layout in one pass. When a force algorithm is then applied to this initial mapping, the final layout presents better properties than conventional force-based approaches. Numerical evaluations show a number of advantages of pre-mapping points via projections. User evaluation demonstrates that these tools promote ease of manipulation as well as fast identification of concepts and associations which cannot be easily expressed by conventional graph visualization alone. In recent years, many dimensionality reduction (DR) algorithms have been proposed for visual analysis of multidimensional data. Given a set of n-dimensional observations, such algorithms create a 2D or 3D projection thereof that preserves relative distances or neighborhoods. The quality of resulting projections is strongly influenced by many choices, such as the DR techniques used and their various parameter settings. Users find it challenging to judge the effectiveness of a projection in maintaining features from the original space and to understand the effect of parameter settings on these results, as well as performing related tasks such as comparing two projections. We present a set of interactive visualizations that aim to help users with these tasks by revealing the quality of a projection and thus allowing inspection of parameter choices for DR algorithms, by observing the effects of these choices on the resulting projection. Our visualizations target questions regarding neighborhoods, such as finding false and missing neighbors and showing how such projection errors depend on algorithm or parameter choices. Na maioria dos processos de análise de imagens há a necessidade de um pré-processamento, no qual são extraídos e calculados vetores de características que representem as imagens são utilizados no cálculo de similaridade. Uma dificuldade nessas tarefas é o grande número de características que definem um espaço de alta dimensionalidade, afetando fortemente o desempenho das tarefas que seguem, que podem envolver uma análise visual, um agrupamento ou uma classificação de dados, por exemplo. Lidar com esse problema normalmente exige técnicas de redução de dimensionalidade ou seleção de características. O presente trabalho dá sequência a trabalhos que utilizam técnicas de visualização como suporte para avaliar espaços de características gerados a partir de coleções de imagens. Nele, objetiva-se aprimorar um método baseado na análise visual de conjuntos de imagens empregando a árvore de similaridade Neighbor-Joining que apoia o usuário a selecionar um subespaço de características que mantenha ou melhore os resultados das visualizações do conjunto de imagens. Bancos de dados relacionais são fontes de dados rigidamente estruturadas, caracterizadas por relacionamentos complexos entre um conjunto de relações (tabelas). Entender tais relacionamentos é um desafio, porque os usuários precisam considerar múltiplas relações, entender restrições de integridade, interpretar vários atributos, e construir consultas SQL para cada tentativa de exploração. Neste cenário, introduz-se uma metodologia em duas etapas; primeiro utiliza-se um grafo organizado como uma estrutura hierárquica para modelar os relacionamentos do banco de dados, e então, propõe-se uma nova técnica de visualização para exploração relacional. Os resultados demonstram que a proposta torna a exploração de bases de dados significativamente simplificada, pois o usuário pode navegar visualmente pelos dados com pouco ou nenhum conhecimento sobre a estrutura subjacente. Além disso, a navegação visual de dados remove a necessidade de consultas SQL, e de toda complexidade que elas requerem. Digital techniques have been developed and validated to assess semiquantitatively immunohistochemical nuclear staining. Currently visual classification is the standard for qualitative nuclear evaluation. Analysis of pixels that represents the immunohistochemical labeling can be more sensitive, reproducible and objective than visual grading. This study compared two semiquantitative techniques of digital image analysis with three techniques of visual analysis imaging to estimate the p53 nuclear immunostaining. Methods: Sixty-three sun-exposed forearm-skin biopsies were photographed and submitted to three visual analyses of images: the qualitative visual evaluation method (0 to 4 +), the percentage of labeled nuclei and HSCORE. Digital image analysis was performed using ImageJ 1.45p; the density of nuclei was scored per ephitelial area (DensNU) and the pixel density was established in marked suprabasal epithelium (DensPSB). Results: Statistical significance was found in: the agreement and correlation among the visual estimates of evaluators, correlation among the median visual score of the evaluators, the HSCORE and the percentage of marked nuclei with the DensNU and DensPSB estimates. Mestrado em Arquitectura Paisagista - Instituto Superior de Agronomia; The interest for the subject, “Visual Analysis of the Landscape in the Municipality of Almada”, emerged from the perception that projects don´t generally meet the needs of the populations, but instead they meet the personal preferences of the designer. The aim of this work is to introduce public opinion as a tool in the design process. Although the general public doesn´t possess the technical knowledge, making the intervention of the designer essential, they do possess the practical knowledge of the dynamics, needs and the most valuable assets of the landscape that surrounds the areas where they live or work. As a case study I chose the Municipality of Almada, from which I took the seven most representative photos and then elaborated an inquiry to its population. In an inquiry, these pictures were to be ordered by preference by the inquired, asking them to make the visual analysis of the municipality and revealing what kind of landscapes they most and least like. It was possible to conclude that although the urban expansion engulfed the natural landscape, involving the population in an insalubrious environment, people still prefer landscapes with natural elements...

This paper focuses on the body-image discourses currently present in society as I felt it was important to propose a clear notion of the state of the subject today. Positioned in the interface between culture and body, the emphasis on the meanings of body (re)presentations is important since the ways of representing the body have always been implicitly linked with vision, language, perception, cognition, identity, social and cultural involvement, legitimation, difference and plasticity, providing incredible material for social researchers to work with. The associated interpretations, moreover, fall within the aims of social theory and culture. Thus this paper looks at the original – and always interesting – field of body-representations and the implications on the level of their visual meaning, uncovering questions and specific realities usually accepted as natural, though they are in fact naturalized. It enhances the use of discourse and visual analysis to uncover an understanding of those realities and meanings.

Purpose: Cataract is the main cause of blindness, affecting 18 million people worldwide, with the highest incidence in the population above 50 years of age. Low visual acuity caused by cataract may have a negative impact on patient quality of life. The current treatment is surgery in order to replace the natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), which can be mono- or multifocal. However, due to potential side effects, IOLs must be carefully chosen to ensure higher patient satisfaction. Thus, studies on the visual behavior of these patients may be an important tool to determine the best type of IOL implantation. This study proposed an anamnestic add-on for optimizing the choice of IOL. Methods: We used a camera that automatically takes pictures, documenting the patient’s visual routine in order to obtain additional information about the frequency of distant, intermediate, and near sights. Results: The results indicated an estimated frequency percentage, suggesting that visual analysis of routine photographic records of a patient with cataract may be useful for understanding behavioural gaze and for choosing visual management strategy after cataract surgery, simultaneously stimulating interest for customized IOL manufacturing according to individual needs.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of SPM and visual analysis of brain SPECT in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). METHOD: Interictal and ictal SPECTs of 22 patients with MTLE were performed. Visual analysis were performed in interictal (VISUAL(inter)) and ictal (VISUAL(ictal/inter)) studies. SPM analysis consisted of comparing interictal (SPM(inter)) and ictal SPECTs (SPM(ictal)) of each patient to control group and by comparing perfusion of temporal lobes in ictal and interictal studies among themselves (SPM(ictal/inter)). RESULTS: For detection of the epileptogenic focus, the sensitivities were as follows: VISUAL(inter)=68%; VISUAL(ictal/inter)=100%; SPM(inter)=45%; SPM(ictal)=64% and SPM(ictal/inter)=77%. SPM was able to detect more areas of hyperperfusion and hypoperfusion. CONCLUSION: SPM did not improve the sensitivity to detect epileptogenic focus. However, SPM detected different regions of hypoperfusion and hyperperfusion and is therefore a helpful tool for better understand pathophysiology of seizures in MTLE.

Visual analysis of single-case time series: Effects of variability, serial dependence, and magnitude of intervention effects

Visual analysis is the dominant method of analysis for single-case time series. The literature assumes that visual analysts will be conservative judges. We show that previous research into visual analysis has not adequately examined false alarm and miss rates or the effect of serial dependence. In order to measure false alarm and miss rates while varying serial dependence, amount of random variability, and effect size, 37 students undertaking a postgraduate course in single-case design and analysis were required to assess the presence of an intervention effect in each of 27 AB charts constructed using a first-order autoregressive model. Three levels of effect size and three levels of variability, representative of values found in published charts, were combined with autocorrelation coefficients of 0, 0.3 and 0.6 in a factorial design. False alarm rates were surprisingly high (16% to 84%). Positive autocorrelation and increased random variation both significantly increased the false alarm rates and interacted in a nonlinear fashion. Miss rates were relatively low (0% to 22%) and were not significantly affected by the design parameters. Thus, visual analysts were not conservative, and serial dependence did influence judgment.

This work focuses on discussing a methodological approach application of teaching based on reading and interpretation of the electronic and printed media image, intending to recognize linguistic elements (foreign words) linked to the subtitles from the ads. In the educational framework, suggesting an English Language teaching integrated to the Visual Culture and Art, contemplating the imagistic culture. This work, we also research the mediator process, that is, the teacher interference as a guide in the involvement between images, students and their representations. This dissertation is a result from a camp research, which on we applied an interpretative and prescriptive study about images from publicity done to twelfth-grade students (two groups formed by fifteen of teenagers) from a private school in Goiânia-GO. We present a new application designed for the visual exploration of microarray data.It is based on an extension and adaption of parallel coordinates to support the visual exploration of large and high-dimensional datasets. In particular, we investigate the visual analysis of gene-expression data as generated by microarray experiments. We combine refined visual exploration with statistical methods to a visual analytics approach, which proved to be particularly successful in this application domain. We will demonstrate the usefulness on several multidimensional gene-expression datasets from different bioinformatics applications.

La enseñanza de la Geografía a distintos niveles, dispone, ahora, de un nuevo recurso pedagógico, las imágenes de satélite, de gran utilidad para hacer más asequible a los alumnos la asimilación de algunos conceptos abstractos. El análisis visual sigue siendo un método válido en la interpretación de imágenes. O limiar de anaerobiose (LA) é definido como a intensidade de exercício físico em que a produção de energia pelo metabolismo aeróbio é suplementada pelo metabolismo anaeróbio. Este índice constitui-se de um delimitador fisiológico de grande importância para o fornecimento de informações concernentes aos principais sistemas biológicos do organismo, os quais estão envolvidos na realização de um exercício físico. O LA é um importante parâmetro de determinação da capacidade aeróbia funcional de um indivíduo. Diversos métodos são usados para estimar o LA durante exercício. Existem métodos invasivos, como a medida repetida da concentração de lactato sanguíneo; e métodos não-invasivos, por meio de análise de variáveis biológicas como medidas contínuas dos gases respiratórios, através da análise de mudança do padrão de resposta das variáveis ventilatórias e metabólicas, e também pela análise da mudança do padrão de resposta da freqüência cardíaca (FC) frente a um exercício físico incremental. O objetivo deste trabalho é usar métodos computacionais de análise visual de dados para obter uma estrutura de análise (classificação) dos índices referentes à colaboração entre fornecedor e cliente. Deseja-se verificar as barreiras colaborativas e avaliar o comportamento de grupos de empresas segundo esses índices. Para o desenvolvimento do trabalho foi usado um conjunto de dados coletados em indústrias de bens de consumo que avaliaram a colaboração com o seu parceiro varejista. Os resultados demonstraram uma nova proposta de classificação para os índices colaborativos; quais são as empresas mais colaborativas segundo a localização, subsetores e número de funcionários; e os fatores que se apresentam como barreiras colaborativas mais evidentes, tais como: mudança de cultura das empresas e o baixo retorno de investimento.; The goal of this work is to use computational methods for visual data analysis in order to obtain a structure for analysis (classification) of the indices related to the concepts of collaboration between supplier and customer. Visual evaluation of beef tenderness by using surface structural observations and its relationship to meat colour

The study describes the relationship between visual and instrumental measurements for colour and tenderness between five South African beef breeds: Bos indicus (Brahman), Sanga type (Nguni), British Bos taurus (Angus), European Bos taurus (Charolais) and the composite (Bonsmara). Ten animals per genotype were used (total = 50). The carcasses were split and the right sides were electrically stimulated, while the left sides were not stimulated. Steaks were aged until three days post mortem on polystyrene plates and until 9, 14 and 20 days post mortem in vacuum bags. The steaks were evaluated by visual analysis for colour, marbling, fibre separation, surface texture and structure integrity by a 10-member trained panel. Colour was also measured by the CIE L*, a*, b* system using a Minolta meter, and tenderness was measured by means of Warner-Bratzler shear force. High negative correlations were observed between the visual colour and L* (r = -0.809), b* (r = -0.698) and high positive correlations were observed between the visual colour and hue (r = 0.797). There were also negative correlations between shear force and structure integrity (r = -0.410) and fibre separation (r = -0.401).
