Uchida, MC, Crewther, BT, Ugrinowitsch, C, Bacurau, RFP, Moriscot, AS, and Aoki, MS. J Strength Cond Res 23(7): 2003-2008, 2009-This study assessed the effect of different resistance exercise scheme (RES) designs of similar total of load lifted on the responses of testosterone, cortisol, and creatine kinase (CK). Twenty-seven healthy males performed 1 of 4 bench press workouts described by the 1 repetition maximum (1RM) load: 4 sets of maximum repetitions at 50%-1RM (50%-1RM RES), 5 sets of maximum repetitions at 75%-1RM (75%-1RM RES), 10 sets of maximum repetitions at 90%-1RM (90%1RM RES), or 8 sets of maximum repetitions at 110%-1RM (110%-1RM RES). Each RES was equated by the total volume of load lifted (repetitions x sets x load). Blood samples, collected pre-exercise (Pre) and post-exercise (Post) at 1 and 24 hours (24 h), were analyzed for total and free testosterone, total cortisol, and CK. In general, testosterone and cortisol showed little change within or between the different RES (p > 0.05), possibly because of the relatively low volume lifted and/ or the small muscle mass activated by the bench press exercise. Cortisol was elevated after the 75%-1RM RES at the Post sample, with this response also exceeding the other RES (p < 0.05). The 24 h CK response was also elevated after the 75%-1RM RES (p < 0.05)...

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of marathon performance time (MPT) to maximal aerobic power (VO2 max), physical characteristics, and training indices recorded for 12 weeks prior to a race in 35 female distance runners. The marathon experience of the subjects ranged from two to fifteen races. Physical and aerobic power characteristics (mean +/- S.D.) were: age, 35.7 +/- 8.5 yr; height, 166.4 +/- 5.7 cm; weight, 55.1 +/- 5.7 kg; body fat, 15.7 +/- 5.0%; VO2 max, 56.5 +/- 6.2 ml . kg-1 . min-1. Marathon time for this race averaged 227.0 +/- 31.6 min. Records from individual training diaries indicated the runners averaged 71.0 +/- 10.0 workout days, 10.0 +/- 10.0 two X day-1 workouts, 81.0 +/- 8.0 total workouts, 12.3 +/- 1.8 mean km . workout-1, 5402.8 +/- 1302.6 total training min, 187.0 +/- 18.0 m . min-1 training pace, 112.2 +/- 32.1 max km . wk-1, 83.1 +/- 23.4 mean km . wk-1, 998.8 +/- 282.6 km . 12 wk-1 and 13.8 +/- 2.4 mean km . day-1. MPT was positively correlated to body mass index (r = 0.52), and body fat (r = 0.52) but negatively related to VO2 max (r = -0.65). MPT was also negatively related to previous marathons completed (r = -0.47), workout days (r = -0.47), two X day-1 workouts (r = -0.52), total workouts (r = -0.56)...

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effectiveness of using ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) with heart rate in the monitoring of exercise intensity during aerobic dance instruction. Thirty-eight students who enrolled in aerobic dance classes used heart rate to monitor exercise intensity while 38 additional students used RPE to monitor exercise intensity during a 14-week course. Classes met twice a week for 50 min and all outside workouts were recorded. The groups did not differ with respect to the number of outside workouts. The dependent variable was endurance performance as measured by the distance run in 15 min. Data were analysed with a repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) for multifactor experiments. There were significant trials (P less than 0.0001) and interaction (P less than 0.05) effects, and both groups improved significantly in endurance performance during 14 weeks of training. However, the group using RPE to monitor exercise intensity had a significantly greater gain in endurance. The heart rate group had a mean increase of 6% (166 m) whereas the RPE group increased 11% (274 m). It is concluded that during aerobic dance the monitoring of exercise intensity with RPE is associated with greater improvement in endurance than is heart rate monitoring.

The Masters Swimming Program is over 40 years old and has achieved international status, with thousands of participants competing in five-year age categories between 18 and 99. Early studies of Masters swimmers by age groups found an increase in times for most events of about 1% per year, and later studies showed a significant correlation with the age-associated decline in maximal oxygen uptake. As larger sample sizes have become available, the age-related decline in performance among national champion Masters swimmers, both men and women, and for both short and longer swims, has been shown to be linear at about 0.6% per year up to age 70. Beyond age 70, the age-related decline accelerates exponentially for both men and women, with considerably more variability than in younger age groups. Several factors may be related to the accelerated performance decline beyond the of age 70, including accelerated physiological aging, chronic physical disabilities, acute illnesses requiring relatively lengthy recovery, effects of multiple medications, and social issues such as transportation problems, all of which can lead to increasing difficulty in maintaining a regular workout schedule. Masters Swimming is a “user-friendly” aerobic sport...

The aims of the present study were to 1) examine whether individual HR and RPE responses to a jump rope workout could be used to predict changes in high-intensity intermittent running performance in young athletes, and 2) examine the effect of using different methods to determine a smallest worthwhile change (SWC) on the interpretation of group-average and individual changes in the variables. Before and after an 8-week high-intensity training program, 13 children athletes (10.6 ± 0.9 yr) performed a high-intensity running test (30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test, VIFT) and three jump rope workouts, where HR and RPE were collected. The SWC was defined as either 1/5th of the between-subjects standard deviation or the variable typical error (CV). After training, the large ~9% improvement in VIFT was very likely, irrespective of the SWC. Standardized changes were greater for RPE (very likely-to-almost certain, ~30-60% changes, ~4-16 times >SWC) than for HR (likely-to-very likely, ~2-6% changes, ~1-6 times >SWC) responses. Using the CV as the SWC lead to the smallest and greatest changes for HR and RPE, respectively. The predictive value for individual performance changes tended to be better for HR (74-92%) than RPE (69%), and greater when using the CV as the SWC. The predictive value for no-performance change was low for both measures (<26%). Substantial decreases in HR and RPE responses to short jump rope workouts can predict substantial improvements in high-intensity running performance at the individual level. Using the CV of test measures as the SWC might be the better option.

Bank loans can become non-performing because of problems with the borrower s financial health, problems with the design or implementation of lender protection features, or both. In ascertaining how to deal with a problem loan, it is important to distinguish between a borrower s ability to pay and willingness to pay, Making this distinction is not always easy and requires effort. This manual was written as a guide for lending institution staff dealing with non-performing loans (NPLs) extended to corporations and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It deals with both ad hoc and systemic financial distress and delves into how borrower problems may have arisen in the first place. It provides guidance to lending institutions staff responsible for handling individual problem loans and to senior managers responsible for organizing portfolio-wide asset resolution.

Banks and major secured creditors frequently work closely with financially distressed corporate clients in what are termed “business workouts”. This article examines the potential risks to banks involved in business workouts of becoming attractive targets for liquidators for insolvent trading litigation if the bank’s corporate client goes into liquidation. The article examines the risks of banks falling within the statutory definition of “de facto director” pursuant to s 9(b)(i) of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth). The article provides a critical examination of Emanuel Management Pty Ltd (in liq) v Fosters Brewing Group Ltd, arguably, the leading Australian case on this topic. The article provides a review of the procedures and conditions which a bank may require in a business workout with respect to their potential relevance to the bank’s risk of de facto director status. A brief examination is provided with respect to whether or not banks may avoid risks of de facto director status in business workouts by engaging consultants. Finally, the key finding of the article is that a bank’s risk of de facto director status in a business workout may be significantly influenced when a bank’s conduct and the conditions result in the bank exercising real influence in the corporate governance of its client company.; Martin Markovic

The World Bank assessed the insolvency and creditor or debtor regimes (ICR) of Moldova pursuant to the joint international monetary fund (IMF) and World Bank initiative on the observance of standards and codes (ROSC). The Moldovan authorities have made remarkable progress over the last decade in taking on board a broad range of reform related to the commercial law regime, including the laws pertaining to creditor protection and insolvency. Loans are often over collateralized, reducing available credit and increasing the incentives for lenders to rely primarily on their collateral for repayment rather than to support restructuring efforts. The secured transactions regime requires improvement, importantly regarding the facilitation of important credit instruments over category of assets. The rules aimed at encouraging good corporate behavior at times of financial distress may be improved and obstacles on insolvency filing by creditors removed to ensure timely filing of insolvency proceedings. There are also certain risks to creditor rights...

This article analyzes the legislation and institutions connected with creditor rights and insolvency proceedings in Colombia. It aims to contribute to the debate on the conditions required to restore the vitality of the Colombian credit environment. In relation to creditor rights, there is a particular emphasis on mechanisms for establishing security interests used in granting corporate credit. The analysis identifies the principal factors affecting the efficiency of security interests. These include deficiencies in substantive and procedural law, as well as in registry organization. The paper goes on to analyze the legal, institutional and regulatory framework for insolvency proceedings, identifying weaknesses and highlighting strengths that insolvency reforms should aim to preserve. The need for attention to corporate workouts and prepackaged reorganization agreements is also addressed. The paper concludes with prioritized recommendations for a plan of legal and institutional reform intended to improve the credit environment, creditor protection and enable the establishment of a more balanced insolvency system. Applying the recommendations to Senate Bill 207/05 (Insolvency Regime) makes it possible to identify the strengths of the Bill...

This study provides a conceptual framework for the analysis of the questions of out-of-court debt restructuring from a policy-oriented perspective. The starting point of the analysis is given by the World Bank principles for effective insolvency and creditor rights systems. The study offers an overview of out-of-court restructuring, which is not seen as fundamentally opposed to formal insolvency procedures. Actually, the study contemplates different restructuring techniques as forming a continuum to the treatment of financial difficulties. The study discusses the advantages and disadvantages of all the debt restructuring techniques, and concludes, in this regard, that a legal system may contain a number of options a menu that can cover different sets of circumstances. In the end, the law may offer a toolbox with very different instruments that the parties may use depending on the specific facts of the case. The study also provides a checklist that can be used to examine the features of a legal system that bear a direct influence on debt restructuring activities.

In February 2001, Turkey was hit by its deepest economic and financial crisis since World War II, prompting a severe decline in business activity. The adverse effects of the crisis were felt throughout the economy-starting in the public sector, spreading to the financial sector, and, causing increasing distress in the real sector. To restore growth and return companies to profitability, Turkey urgently needs to implement a comprehensive corporate restructuring program. Moreover, simultaneous resolution efforts are needed in cases where corporate distress is creating distress for financial institutions. The report explores the significance and depth of the crisis, which includes an analysis of corporate perceptions of the crisis, and corporate distress. Several factors will limit the ability of Turkish financial institutions to resolve distress among corporate borrowers. Weak insolvency and foreclosure procedures may encourage a race to seize collateral, inhibiting orderly workouts of non-liquid but viable companies. Small...

The purpose of this book is to provide a coherent overview of the insolvency systems found around the world. Its intended audience includes academics, judges, lawyers, and policymakers. Its focus is on businesses rather than natural persons. The authors hope to give the reader a sense of some of the principal approaches to managing the general default of a business debtor. The authors will discuss the nature of the costs and benefits arising from the various policy choices legislators have made. In the process, they will emphasize the close interrelationship among various elements of an insolvency regime so that these elements can be viewed as part of an overall system and not just as a series of policy decisions about particular rules, such as the method of initiation of an insolvency case or the balance struck in setting the boundaries of an avoidance power. The organization of the book reflects our view of insolvency laws as complete systems, including not only the 'insolvency' or 'bankruptcy' code of a jurisdiction but also closely related laws and the institutional framework in which those laws are applied. The book takes a systematic approach to a variety of topics related to credit and insolvency regulation. The functional analysis starts with the study of debt enforcement...

Effective creditor/debtor rights and insolvency systems are an important element of financial system stability. The World Bank Group accordingly has been working with partner organizations to develop principles for insolvency and creditor/debtor rights systems. The Principles for Effective Insolvency and Creditor/Debtor Rights Systems (the Principles) are a distillation of international best practice on design aspects of these systems, emphasizing contextual, integrated solutions and the policy choices involved in developing those solutions.Based on the experience gained from the use of the Principles, and following extensive consultations, the publication has been thoroughly reviewed and updated in 2005, 2011 and 2015. The revised Principles contained in this document have benefited from wide consultation and, more importantly, from the practical experience of using them in the context of the Bank’s assessment and operational work.

Aquatic exercises is one of many physical activity options, where the objective is to improve or maintain levels of health, especially in adults. However, one of aspect that merits attention is the intensity of exercise and the means by which it is controlled. The objective of this study was to compare the subjective sensation of effort (PSE) with heart rate (HR; bpm), in 49 to 53-year-old women, during aquatic exercises. Twelve women participated of this study (51,1 years + 1,6), all of whom had been participating in this modality for at least 3 months. The HR was measured by Polar and the PSE was arrived at using the Borg Scale. Data were collected at three distinct points (10, 20 and 30 minutes), during three aquatic exercise workouts. Statistical analysis employed Student’s t test and ANOVA to a level of signifi cance of 0,05. Significant differences were detected in HR between the fi rst and third workouts at 10 minutes and the fi rst and second workouts at 20 minutes. There were no signifi cant differences between mean PSE values. There was a correlation between HR and PSE at 30 minutes of the fi rst and second workouts. We therefore conclude that the Borg scale is not a good method for intensity control during aquatic exercises for this group.; A hidroginástica objetiva melhorar ou manter níveis de aptidão física relacionados à saúde...
