We aimed to investigate the vascular effects of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) on carotid arteries from young and adult rats. With this purpose young and adult rats received a solution of DL-homocysteine-thiolactone (1 g/kg body weight/day) in the drinking water for 7, 14 and 28 days. Increase on plasma homocysteine occurred in young and adult rats treated with DL-homocysteine-thiolactone in all periods. Vascular reactivity experiments using standard muscle bath procedures showed that HHcy enhanced the contractile response of endothelium-intact, carotid rings to phenylephrine in both young and adult rats. However, in young rats, the increased phenylephrine-induced contraction was observed after hyperhomocysteinemia for 14 and 28 days, whereas in adult rats this response was already apparent after 7 day treatment. HHcy impaired acetylcholine-induced relaxation in arteries from adult but not young rats. The contraction induced by phenylephrine in carotid arteries in the presence of Y-27632 was reversed to control values in arteries from young but not adult rats with hyperhomocysteinemia. HHcy did not alter the contraction induced by CaCl(2) in carotid arteries from young rats, but enhanced CaCl(2)-induced contraction in the arteries from adult rats. HHcy increased the basal levels of superoxide anion in arteries from both groups. Finally...

Para atingir esse objetivo recorremos a elementos particulares da álgebra do grupo simétrico e indexámos os caminhos do grafo da ramificação a um conjunto de vetores de Zn ao qual também conseguimos indexar os caminhos do grafo de Young, utilizando nesse caso os quadros de Young standard.; In this paper we prove that the branching graph, built through the equivalence classes of irreducible representations of Sn and the respective irreducible components of the restrictions to Sn-1, coincides, both in vertices as in paths, with the Young graph, composed of Young diagrams of partitions of n and the respective diagrams that are obtained when subtracted a removable box. To achieve this goal we resorted to particular elements of the symmetric group algebra and indexed the paths of the branching graph to a set of Zn vectors...

The paper uses individual level census and household survey data to present a rich profile of the young developing migrants around the world. Youth are found to comprise a large share of all migrants, particularly in migration to other developing countries, with the probability of migration peaking in the late teens or early twenties. The paper examines in detail the age and gender composition of migrants, whether young migrants move alone or with a parent or spouse, their participation in schooling and work in the destination country, the types of jobs they do, and the age of return migration. The results suggest a high degree of commonality in the youth migrant experience across a number of destination countries. In particular, developing country youth tend to work in similar occupations all around the world, and are more concentrated in these occupations than older migrants or native youth. Nevertheless, there is also considerable heterogeneity among youth migrants: 29 percent of 18 to 24 year olds are attending school in their destination country, but another 29 percent are not working or in school. This illustrates both the potential of migration for building human capital, and the fear that lack of integration prevents it from being used.

This report responds to the growing concern over issues facing Maldivian youth today, and specifically, to a request made by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to examine the status of youth in the Maldives. Such concerns are certainly warranted, particularly in light of a regional youth bulge which is taking place in South Asia, as well as an observed increase in at risk behavior such as youth drug use and membership in gangs. While a number of studies have sought to examine youth issues in the Maldives, a comprehensive and holistic assessment is lacking. This report was aimed at helping to fill this knowledge gap. This report examines issues affecting young people in the Maldives as they transition from adolescence to adulthood, and based on this analysis and a review of international good practice, recommends a number of actions for the Government s consideration. The analysis focused on youth experiences as they pertain to: health, education, labor, family structure, gangs and violence, and civic engagement and participation. A youth development framework...

Context: Young women are at high risk of weight gain but there has been limited knowledge on weight management in this group. Hyperandrogenemia and menstrual abnormalities are common co-morbidities of obesity in young women but their associations with food cravings are not known. Metformin has been shown to reduce body weight and improve metabolic outcomes in older adults but its effects on healthy overweight and obese young women have not been investigated. Quantitative lifestyle advice has been shown to be effective in inducing weight loss but its psychological effects on young women have not been extensively studied. The overall objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of metformin, quantitative lifestyle advice and internet-based intervention on weight management in young. Methods: In the first 12-weeks, 203 overweight and obese young women (BMI 33.3±0.3 kg/m² , age 28±0.3 years; age range:17-37) were randomized to one of three treatment arms to receive metformin (Diabex XR 1500mg a day) plus qualitative lifestyle advice (M-QL), placebo plus qualitative lifestyle advice (P-QL) or a structured lifestyle program (L-QT). L-QT consisted of an energy restricted diet with quantitative lifestyle advice (6000KJ; 40% protein...

Background. Despite the evidence of significant under-reporting, young workers are over-represented in injury statistics. Possible reasons for higher injury rates include lack of skill due to inexperience, cognitive and emotional immaturity, inadequate training and supervision, and unfamiliarity with working requirements and safe operating procedures. This may also include incomplete physical development for physically demanding work and unsafe behaviours due to peer pressure or risk-taking tendencies. There is a body of evidence indicating an association between occupational health and safety (OHS) training and a lower incidence of workplace injuries, but other research indicates that young workers often receive little or no training. The limited knowledge among young people about workplace hazards, together with inconsistency in the provision of workplace OHS training indicate a need for introductory OHS education in schools. Ideally such education should be complementary to that provided in workplaces, in the community and in the home by parents. Key informants of the situation in schools are the teachers themselves. However, teacher perspectives, as well as parent perspectives have received little attention in the literature. In order to contextualise the issues...

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus type I (DMTI) has become apparent in children/young people, a current and worrisome problem due to increasing incidence and prevalence. In addition to its consequences, it interferes with the quality of life (QOF), representing a public health issue. Objectives: Characterize the QOL of children/young people with DMTI; identify factors influencing children/young people with DMTI QOL; check DMTI impact in the QOF of children/young people. Methods: Systematic review of full text studies, published from January 2006 to June 2014 that included the QOF of children/young people with DMTI, children/young people with DMTI with no other pathology and their parents, consulting CINAHL, MEDLINE, MedicLatina, Academic Search Complete, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection and Scholar Google, using "quality of life", "child*", "diabetes". Studies of children/young people with DMTI and other chronic illness were excluded. 546 articles have been identified, 11 selected and seven used. Results: Parents perceive less QOL and greater impact in the life of children/young people than them. Children/young people QOL improve with the insulin pump and severe hypoglycemic crisis and ketoacidosis decrease. Gender and age group influence children/young people QOL. Severe hypoglycemic crisis are related to the parents' fear of hypoglycemia...

On 27 March 2006, the Federal Government's Workplace Relations Amendment (Work Choices) Act 2005, was enacted. This saw the most radical industrial relations change in Australia for over one hundred years. The changes included: removing unfair dismissal for employers with fewer than one hundred employees; reducing the power of the AIRC and giving the power to set wages to the AFPC; harmonising the industrial relations systems by bringing more businesses under the federal system; increasing the emphasis on AWAs; legislating five minimum Fair Pay and Condition Standards as the minimum for any agreement; introducing EGAs and; reducing the powers of unions. Since the changes were first announced there have been many opponents including the Labor Party, the unions and many academics. These opponents argued that the changes would reduce the wages and conditions of those most vulnerable in society including young people. Proponents of the changes argued that young people are not necessarily vulnerable when it comes to negotiating wages and conditions and that the changes would increase productivity and decrease the unemployment rate of young people. Since the legislation was enacted over a year ago there have been many changes. Wages of young people have been reduced slightly. The minimum wage...

Investing in every child at an early age is an investment in human, and economic development for all. Children born in poverty are far more likely to grow undeveloped in both body, and mind. Science tells us that early child development (ECD) is critical, and marks a child for life, and, young children who are well nurtured, do better in school, and develop the skills to compete in a global economy. It is in this context that the Bank hosted a conference to review the state of knowledge on brain development, the link between ECD and human development, the standards of care to improve children's educational outcomes, the qualitative and quantitative measures of effective programs, and elements of quality in ECD programs. This book contains the proceedings of the Conference on Investing in our Children's Future, which brought together leading experts, academicians, and practitioners from nongovernmental organizations, civil society, governments, and international organizations. The conference featured the benefits of investing in young children...

This study examines the demographic, socioeconomic, and cultural circumstances of young men and young women (aged 15-29) in Upper Egypt. Where appropriate, comparison is made with the rest of the country. It explores the perceptions of young men and women regarding the challenges and opportunities they face as they attempt to gain access to education, employment, services, and civic engagement. More broadly, the study explores their views on the factors that facilitate or limit their inclusion in the society and economy of Upper Egypt. This report focuses on two main transitions of young Upper Egyptians: the transition from school to work, and the transition to active citizenship and civic engagement. The study also briefly considers young people's engagement in the January 25th Revolution and their aspirations for the future in its aftermath. It concludes by offering recommendations for youth-inclusive policies that could expand the scope of employment and participation opportunities currently available to young people. The focus of the study being on Upper Egypt...

Every year, drivers throughout the world are killed or injured in road traffic. Young drivers run a greater risk everywhere, and this problem is still largely unsolved. Better understanding of the underlying processes could, however, be a useful tool in preventive endeavours. To change a young driver's goals behind driving and the context in which it is done, a variety of different methods of persuasion should be tested. Both “soft” and “hard” methods should be used. For example, communication and increased enforcement may be used simultaneously. Communication campaigns should highlight the dangers of unsafe behaviour and in particular target young males. Communication campaigns that employ persuasive, emotional messages are most effective where young drivers are concerned. Research shows that attitudes about safety are formed at an early age, long before legal driving, and therefore it would also be important to target young adolescents. Laws need enforcement to be effective and should target areas of particular risk to young drivers. Driver education or communication campaigns cannot be expected to radically change a young person's life goals. For that purpose, active learning methods that make use of the learner's own experiences have to be applied. Special courses for young drivers designed to make individuals conscious of their personal tendencies and the type of social context that affects their driving behaviour could be helpful...

European Master in Social Work with Families and Children; This study explores expressions of hope and aspiration among young people receiving rehabilitation services in Kampala, Uganda. The study objectives were (i) to examine expressions of hope and aspiration among young people receiving rehabilitation services (ii) to document the social determinants of hope and aspiration among young people receiving rehabilitation services and (iii) to assess barriers to the realization of hope and aspiration among young people receiving rehabilitation services. The study was carried out in Masooli Rehabilitation Centre of Ugandan Youth Development Link (UYDEL). UYDEL is a non- profit making organization (NGO) that was founded by a group of social welfare professionals in 1993. UYDEL currently runs four main programs concerning (i) child rights protection (child sexual abuse, child trafficking, commercial sexual exploitation, and child labour), (ii) HIV prevention among high risk groups of children and youth, (iii) alcohol and substance abuse, and (iv) adolescent sexual and reproductive health. In addition to the four major programs, UYDEL provides rehabilitation and livelihood skills training to young people and also conducts social research. This study took place with the participants from UYDEL receiving different vocational skills training. Young people in the rehabilitation centre were receiving mainly vocational trainings and learning different skills such as hair dressing...

Objective: To assess, the degree of adequacy to Mediterranean Diet (MD), by young cyclists team, and its comparison with the one of young Spanish males of the "enKID study". Background: Now days it has been observed that, the abandoning of the MD, together with sedentary lifestyle, provokes a rapid increase of obesity among the Spanish youth. The progressive abandoning of the MD was firstly evident, in longitudinal studies of the "seven counties", involving active rural populations in Italy. Methods: The Mediterranean Adequacy Index (MAI), is computed by dividing the sum of the percentage of total energy from typical Mediterranean food Groups (Cereals, Legumes, Fruits, Fish), by the sum of the percentage of total energy from non-typical Mediterranean food groups (Meats, Eggs, Cookies, industrial dishes). The collective under the study was 45 young cyclists in the area of Madrid, and homologous young Spanish males of the "enKID study". Results: The average value of MAI of the collective of male cyclists was 2,31(modest value); and the MAI of homologous young males of the "enKID study" is 1.51 (low value). The MAI in Italy several decades ago was 7.2 (very good), when the adequacy to the MD was high; Those results demonstrate that unfortunately the Spanish young people are abandoning the adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. Around 20% of the cyclists have almost null adequacy to the MD...
