The aim of this study is to investigate the process that culminated in the spatial standardization of apartment buildings. The research considers the period between the years 1910 and 1980 and refers to the city of São Paulo.

This research attempts to investigate apartments with three bedrooms...

Understanding movement and dispersal of the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius L.) under field conditions is important in the control of infestations and for managing the spread of bed bugs to new locations. We investigated bed bug movement within and between apartments using mark-release-recapture (m-r-r) technique combined with apartment-wide monitoring using pitfall-style interceptors. Bed bugs were collected, marked, and released in six apartments. The distribution of marked and unmarked bed bugs in these apartments and their 24 neighboring units were monitored over 32 days. Extensive movement of marked bed bugs within and between apartments occurred regardless of the number of bed bugs released or presence/absence of a host. Comparison of marked and unmarked bed bug distributions confirms that the extensive bed bug activity observed was not an artifact of the m-r-r technique used. Marked bed bugs were recovered in apartments neighboring five of six m-r-r apartments. Their dispersal rates at 14 or 15 d were 0.0–5.0%. The estimated number of bed bugs per apartment in the six m-r-r apartments was 2,433–14,291 at 4–7 d after release. Longevity of bed bugs in the absence of a host was recorded in a vacant apartment. Marked large nymphs (3rd– 5th instar)...

Six insecticide treatment strategies that included the use of chlorpyrifos and dichlorvos were evaluated in apartments infested with Blattella germanica (L.). Following treatments, populations were monitored monthly for 4 months with sticky traps. Strategies which used chlorpyrifos were the most effective in reducing cockroach populations. Inclusion of dichlorvos in spray mixtures did not increase the effectiveness of chlorpyrifos. Dichlorvos total-release aerosol bombs were effective only when used immediately following an application of chlorpyrifos. Populations increased in 37.5% of the apartments that were next to units treated with chlorpyrifos plus dichlorvos, while populations increased in 50% of the apartments adjacent to units treated with dichlorvos total-release bombs.

Movements of adult Blattella germanica (L.) populations were significantly influenced by structural features of low-income apartments. Plumbing connections between adjacent apartments enhanced movement. Mark-recapture studies showed that 75% of the immigrants into a given apartment were from adjacent apartments with common plumbing. Applications of chlorpyrifos + dichlorvos at the termination of the study indicated that not all insecticides. even though containing flushing agents, increase inter apartment movement. Results suggest structural modification as a means to deter movement. The degree and frequency of movement suggests that management programs be aimed at entire structures as opposed to localized areas within buildings.

Two similar studies were done to investigate effects of insecticide treatments on German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), movement and dispersal within individual units in multifamily housing. In the first study, Whitmire PT-565 Pyrethrum Insect Fogger (pyrethrins), Diazinon 4E (diazinon), Protector (permethrin), and Baygon 1.5 (propoxur) did not induce any significant changes in cockroach distribution, and rates of movement within apartments decreased. In the second study, populations treated with sublethal doses of pyrethrins and resmethrin settled to their original distribution 24 h after treatment. Results from both studies indicate that thorough insecticide applications do not significantly affect German cockroach population dispersal or movement patterns within apartments.

The waste energy is a very important factor that affects environmental crisis in the world. Buildings have been consuming nearly 40% global energy production, and the building industry has been identified as a sector where substantial savings may occur. In residential buildings, the energy consumption is strongly related to air conditioning systems. In Maceio, the use of passive strategies as natural ventilation seems irrelevant by construction sector. This case results in well, fair, bad or very bad residential apartments in relation to climatic conditions. The apartments located in west quadrant have smaller price than apartments located in east quadrant. It is an attractive factor to the consumer purchase apartments badly adapted to climate. This situation contributes with wild use of air conditioning systems. The use of these equipments results in costs of purchase, operation and maintenance. Not always the accounting oh these values are properly considered in the moment of apartment s acquisition. Facing this context, the present work intends to evaluate the economical impact of air conditioning systems use in residential apartments in Maceio city, Brazil. Emphasize the link between waste energy and financial costs in long term involving this question. By case study...

This paper describes a study that examines the influence of building design and household characteristics on the annual electricity use of apartments in high-rise residential buildings of Dhaka, Bangla-desh. To do this, 342 apartments in different high-rise residential buildings were studied. Their electricity use records were collected and the apartments were also surveyed to collect data of building de-sign characteristics. Data on the building design characteristics in-clude floor level, floor areas of the apartments, effective canyon ratio, window area, shading depth, window-to-wall area ratio (WWR) and window-to-floor area ratio (WFR) and shape coefficient of the apart-ments. Household characteristics include household size and number of air conditioners (ACs). The analysis methods used in this study in-clude descriptive statistics, correlations and linear regression analysis with SPSS. The results show that among the different variables stud-ied, of the design characteristics, total window area and total WFR per apartment are the key predictors of annual electricity if the effect of the influence of household characteristics such as household size and number of ACs are excluded. If household characteristics are included in the linear regression models...

Buildings of types $\textsf{C}_n$ and $\textsf{D}_n$ are defined by rank $n$ polar spaces. The associated building Grassmannians are polar and half-spin Grassmannians. Apartments in dual polar spaces and half-spin Grassmannians were characterized in \cite{CKS}. We characterize apartments in all polar Grassmannians consisting of non-maximal singular subspaces. This characterization is a partial case of more general results concerning embeddings of polar Johnson graphs in polar Grassmann graphs.

Let $H$ be an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space and let ${\mathcal L}(H)$ be the logic formed by all closed subspaces of $H$. For every natural $k$ we denote by ${\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$ the Grassmannian consisting of $k$-dimensional subspaces. An orthogonal apartment of ${\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$ is the set consisting of all $k$-dimensional subspaces spanned by subsets of a certain orthogonal base of $H$. Orthogonal apartments can be characterized as maximal sets of mutually compatible elements of ${\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$. We show that every bijective transformation $f$ of ${\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$ such that $f$ and $f^{-1}$ send orthogonal apartments to orthogonal apartments (in other words, $f$ preserves the compatibility relation in both directions) can be uniquely extended to an automorphism of ${\mathcal L}(H)$.

We show that, if a building is endowed with its complete system of apartments, and if each panel is contained in at least four chambers, then the intersection of two apartments can be any convex subcomplex contained in an apartment. This combinatorial result is particularly interesting for lower dimensional convex subcomplexes of apartments, where we definitely need the assumption on the four chambers per panel in the building. The corresponding statement is not true anymore for arbitrary systems of apartments, and counter-examples for infinite convex subcomplexes exist for any type of buildings. However, when we restrict to finite convex subcomplexes, the above remains true for arbitrary systems of apartments if and only if every finite subset of chambers of the standard Coxeter complex is contained in the convex hull of two chambers.; Comment: 22 pages, combinatorial building theory, simplicial and W-metric approach

Although solar water heating for Southern California apartments was chosen because of its significance to energy conservation. It is attractive for many other reasons. The most significant of these is that of all the applications for solar energy, multiple-unit water heating appears to have the best chance of becoming economically competitive. (See Ref. 2) In this study. three objectives were accomplished: 1. Definition of a baseline system, specifying plumbing configuration, materials, components, and collector design concept. 2. Estimation of system cost and performance. 3. Identification of alternate approaches to the system and component design. enabling solar water heating to become commercially viable. After briefly examining a wide variety of system configurations for a gas-supplemented solar water heater, we chose one system for a preliminary design study. This "baseline system" could be built completely with existing technology. Technical performance of the baseline system was evaluated by a computer simulation model, using hourly weather data for the year 1961 obtained from the weather station in Burbank, California. Solar radiation at Burbank is typical of a large region of the Los Angeles Basin. Average hourly hot water demand for apartments from Reference 1 was used for the simulation of demand.
