The present study seeks to analyze some of the outcomings of the encounter between historical knowledge and new media technologies, especially the internet. It takes as its guiding line study of digital archives established in the first decade of the twenty-first century, more specifically the September 11th Digital Archive, which opened its site in 2002 and remained active until 2007. The main point of this work is that not only this but also other digital archives bring up discussions that change or challenge the very elements of the historical profession...

This dissertation examines a recently discovered archive of films, recordings, photographs and documents relating to the New York jazz lofts of the 1970s. The work not only reconstructs historical details about the lofts, but also explores the significance of the archival project itself, an independent venture founded in 2005 by musician and former loft organizer Juma Sultan. By combining historical research in the Sultan archive and ethnographic engagement with former loft artists, the study examines the continued symbolic significance of the loft era for musicians, listeners and historians. The jazz lofts were independently owned, musician-run spaces in lower Manhattan that served as performance venues, rehearsal halls, living quarters, classrooms and in a variety of other functions. Their emergence is best considered as part of a widespread, politically informed impetus among musicians of the period to organize their own concerts and collective organizations. While the activities shared many similarities with other artist-organized groups emerging in Chicago, St. Louis and elsewhere, the lofts’ independence and lack of a central organizing body led to a more diffuse set of activities than manifested in other cities. The dissertation is structured around two primary goals. First...

Creative and compelling theoretical formulations of the archive have emerged from a host of disciplines in the last decade. Derrida and Foucault, as well as many other humanists and social scientists, have initiated a broadly interdisciplinary conversation about the nature of the archive. This literature suggests a confluence of interests among scholars, archivists, and librarians that is fueled by a shared preoccupation with the function and fate of the historical and scholarly record. The following essay provides an exploration and overview of this archival discourse

The present study analyzes, in the ambit of the Art Museum from Santa Catarina (MASC), the theoretical pathway between the work of Contemporary Art and the dynamics of the called Art system undertaken at the inside part of the institution . It is verified the theory of Art from the theoretician practices, which inserted in the context of the institutions, may define the statute of what Art is and what Art is not. For both authors such as: Cauquelin (2005a, 2005b), Millet (1997), Archer (2001), Gonçalves (2004), Freire (1999) were used as theoretical apparatus. Concerning about the field InterArt theory, it is investigated the relations between Contemporary Art and its process of patrimonialization understood from the changes that got effective in contemporary artistic production, constituting the deconstruction of the artistic object or its frailty as object of art. Take into account the History field and Interart Theory, the studies have analyzed the Modern and Contemporary Art objects and its circularity in institutions from the following: the concept of Art, the concept of archive, the concept of memory and from the document as blank for the work. Authors such as Nora (1993), Huyssen (1996), Freud (1997), Birman (2006), Mezan (1989) have contributed with the notion of memory allied to the the process of forgetfulness and to the museum as an institution of memory. It is also analysed the transformation from Florianópolis Modern Art Museum (MAMF) in Santa Catarina Art Museum (MASC)...

Ces questions seront finalement mises à l’épreuve dans le monument performatif audio-visuel Dylan Walsh – dance.; This essay looks at mourning from a mourner’s sentiment. Freud’s mourning theory has provided a concept of how mourning works that I have questioned from the basis of my mourning experience. In considering Derrida’s archive theory, my position is not as a trained archivist, but as a mourner who has come to engage in the process of archiving. As regards to both psychoanalysis and the archive, this paper does not intend or pretend to advance new theory without taking into account both their respected histories. This paper offers a comparative look...

Or...

The work of an archivist occupies a very simplified place in the imaginary one of many people, who don’t know its characteristics and imagine them like a dusty store. At best, many people think in archives like a simple and mechanical process of request – searchdelivery. In the present project I intend to show, according to the description of my activities realized during the period of my practices carried out in the Diocesan Historical Archive of Santander, that this work is not only this, it has a big variety of activities, but always related to the care of the documents.; Grado en Historia

Archive Access and Accessibility: A Progress Report on Social Networking at Work

World Oral Literature Project Workshop 2010; The Endangered Language Archive (ELAR) at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) has taken a social networking approach to archiving and disseminating documentation of endangered languages and cultures (ELC) in order to balance two requirements: the sensitivity of many ELC materials, requiring effective but nuanced access control; and the fluidity of ELC materials and their access permissions over time, requiring multiple ongoing relationships between depositors, users, and the archive. I will report on issues that arose during the system?s development and users? responses to it following its launch in June 2010. I will also raise the issue of perceptions of access: access is perceived to be relative to the semiotics of the archive interface, rather than the colder fact of whether a particular file is reachable. More concretely, safe and appropriate access control can be enhanced through implementation of further social networking patterns, such as ?user reputation? (Crumlish & Malone 2009).

This dissertation analyzes Wolf Vostell's Fluxus Zug, 1981, arguing that it was simultaneously a work of art, a museum, an academy, and an archive. I explore the art work/alternative institution in relation to other museums that Vostell conceived and realized from the 1960s until his death in 1998; the interdisciplinary collaborations that he established in the 1960s; his concept for an ideal academy from 1969; the archive that he began building in the 1950s; and recent theories of the Archive. This microhistorical study reveals Vostell's centrality to contemporary experimental art. I argue that the spirit of Vostell's art and ideas are very much alive today as artists demonstrate widespread interest in curating as an art practice, in the construction of alternative pedagogies, and in working in, with, and against the Archive.

The Ismar David archive: An Electronic finding aid

Ismar David ( 1910 1996) was a German-born graphic artist who launched his professional career in Jerusalem and moved in 19C2 to live and work in the United States. He is noted for his brilliant work in Hebrew and Latin calligraphy, lettering, and type design, as well as a distinctive linear style of illustration. Over a span of six decades, Ismar David amassed an archive of materials that chronicles his design career. In 1997, the archive was donated to the Melbert B. Cary Jr. Graphic Arts Collection at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where it will be preserved and made available for research. To facilitate the use of an archival collection for research, a repository pre pares what is called a finding aid. A finding aid traditionally provides a detailed description of the collection contents and organizes the materials in a coherent and systematic way. In addition, a finding aid often explains a collection's origin, gives relevant biographical information, and notes the scope and content of a collection. Parts of a collection are usually listed with container numbers that are used to identify and request items for examination. In recent years libraries and other archival repositories have begun to "publish" electronic finding aids on the World Wide Web to help researchers learn the exact content of a collection from a remote location and avoid the travel and detective work that was accepted as part of the research process prior to the explosive growth of the Internet. Many text-encoding options exist and are currently used to create electronic finding aids...

This article explores the socio-political imperative and psychosocial value of re-engaging and expanding the apartheid archive in contemporary South Africa. It suggests that this archive's entanglement with de facto official histories of South Africa has resulted in certain elisions about the historical content of this archive, but also compromises our ability to examine the ongoing effects of our racialised past. It argues that the archive needs to be liberated from these socio-political constraints, expanded, re-appropriated and reclaimed, if we are to more fully apprehend and comprehend the impact of this history. Utilising the Apartheid Archive Project (AAP) as an exemplar, the article highlights the value of retrieving personal memories in countering the totalising effects of official histories, argues for the relationship between such memories and the articulation of voice for those marginalised groups and subalterns that have been excluded from official histories and the archive, and suggests that the narrative is a liminal mnemonic technique that allows for the expression of these memories as fragments and traces of the past that are re-constituted in the present, but also allows for a future imaginary. While recognising that memories articulated through narratives have limitations and are but one source of archival data...

The article explores the role that a number of self-presentation related issues might play in the construction of the Apartheid Archive Project (AAP). It argues that both the web-based portal method of data collection, as well as the nature of the material being assembled - that being autobiographical accounts of recollections of racism under apartheid - suggest the likelihood of a particular kind of participation or subjectification on the part of many potential contributors. In constructing such narratives it has been observed that authors may seek to manage the manner in which they represent themselves and significant others in order both to meet the objectives of the AAP (as they interpret these) and simultaneously to manage self-esteem and the manner in which they are likely to become objects of scrutiny by others. Four central themes are discussed in order to elaborate aspects of self-representation that may be implicated in the AAP, these being: The Confessional Imperative; The Knowing Subject; The Restricted Repertoire of Identificatory Positions; and The Implication of Significant Others. Each of these is discussed in turn, together with some illustrative examples from the existing archive material. It is proposed that while these kinds of narrative influences may be inescapable in the assemblage of data of this kind...

The narratives that constitute the beginnings of an apartheid archive do well to illustrate the value of collecting, centralising and analysing everyday accounts of apartheid's subjects. Developing an archive of narratives that give voice to the quotidian experiences of apartheid is a valuable historical strategy. This approach may be usefully mobilised to offset some of the totalising effects of conventional history writing. Notwithstanding this value, an unreflective turn to narrative as a means to reading the socio-historical and political contours of apartheid, risks reducing critique to a symbolic exercise that centres subjectivity and subject positions as the key analytic targets. Such readings may shift the analysis away from the various levels of materiality and power of which these subject positions are both instruments and effects. In an attempt to demonstrate the way that Foucault's genealogical maxims may be used to counter the danger of centring the subject in history writing, we present some of the key analytic strategies undertaken in a previous study that produced an effective history of the South African paedophile. In so doing, we argue for a re-scoping of the apartheid archive project to include materials required for undertaking histories of the present. This extension would challenge many of the methodological and political constraints implied by limiting the archive to a corpus of memory narratives.
