Population aging has become an emerging problem in society. The combination of several factors led to an increase in life expectancy, which is reflected in a number of people with a more advanced age and therefore more dependent. Thus, this led to greater demands for formal and informal support. In this sense, with this study we aimed to (i) know the type of care which are provided to the older people, by Formal and Informal Caregivers; (ii) understand the perspective of Formal and Informal Caregivers about the care provided, in family and institutional contexts; (iii) identify the main difficulties involved in providing care for the Formal and Informal Caregivers and (iv) identify the support (e.g. social, technical) that are delivered to the caregivers. This study used two questionnaire surveys. A survey consisting of thirteen closed questions was applied to ten Formal Caregivers (FCs), employees of a Private Institution of Social Solidarity, in a city of the north of Portugal. Both were female, aged between 20-59 years. The second survey consisted of fourteen closed questions and was applied also to ten Informal Caregivers (ICs), living in the rural area of the same city. Nine were female and one was male, aged between 40-65 years. A comparative statistical analysis was used. Results had show that the FCs provides social and physical care...

The present research was conducted in the form of a multiple-case study of the two cultural institutions in the French and the Brazilian contexts. The Pompidou Center is a State-funded presidential museum project...

Location contexts are geographic regions, with well defined boundaries, that can be used to characterize the context of the persons lying inside them. In this paper we describe a process that exploits the increasing availability of geographic data to automatically create and classify location contexts. The pro-posed process generates new geographic regions from a database of Points Of Interest through the use of spatial clustering techniques, and classifies them automatically using a decision tree based method. Some preliminary results demonstrate the validity of this approach, while suggesting that a richer geographic database could produce location contexts of higher quality.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).

Our guiding principle is the presumption that education, in all its breadth and complexity, is only meaningful when it takes place in meaningful contexts of action, and so it cannot be narrowed simply to school space and time. This paper therefore suggests an approach that is more consistent with a sociology of non-school education, on the basis of which we try to understand the role of non-formal and informal learning in the construction of meanings of juvenile experience. For this we have brought to the discussion some research data collected from members of the scout movement, since this century-old organization, predominantly non-formal in nature, has developed its educational project on the basis of a belief that young people are actor-subjects in their own education. Critical consideration is given to the influence and place of the new and traditional contexts/institutions in the construction of citizenships and juvenile subjectivities.; Nous assumons comme présupposé orienteur que l’éducation, dans son amplitude et dans sa complexité, n’est significative que lorsqu’elle a lieu dans des contextes significatifs d’action et que, pour cela même, elle n’est réductible, ni aux espaces, ni au temps de l’institution scolaire.

Several studies investigated the neural and functional mechanisms underlying action observation in contexts with objects. However, actions seen in everyday life are often embedded in emotional contexts. The neural systems integrating emotion cues in action observation are still poorly understood. Previous findings suggest that the processing of both action and emotion information recruits motor control areas within the cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathways. It is therefore hard to determine whether social emotional contexts influence action processing via a direct modulation of motor representations coding for the observed action or via the affective state and implicit motor preparedness elicited in observers in response to emotional contexts. Here we designed a novel fMRI task to identify neural networks engaged by the affective appraisal of a grasping action seen in two different emotional contexts, while keeping the action kinematics constant. Results confirmed that observing the same acts of grasping but in different emotional contexts modulated activity in supplementary motor area, ventrolateral thalamus, anterior cerebellum. Moreover, changes in functional connectivity between left supplementary motor area and parahippocampus in different emotional contexts suggested a direct neural pathway through which emotional contexts may drive the neural motor system. Taken together...

Previous studies on the effects of emotional context on memory for centrally presented neutral items have obtained inconsistent results. And in most of those studies subjects were asked to either make a connection between the item and the context at study or retrieve both the item and the context. When no response for the contexts is required, how emotional contexts influence memory for neutral items is still unclear. Thus, the present study attempted to investigate the influences of four types of emotional picture contexts on recognition memory of neutral words using both behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) measurements. During study, words were superimposed centrally onto emotional contexts, and subjects were asked to just remember the words. During test, both studied and new words were presented without the emotional contexts and subjects had to make “old/new” judgments for those words. The results revealed that, compared with the neutral context, the negative contexts and positive high-arousing context impaired recognition of words. ERP results at encoding demonstrated that, compared with items presented in the neutral context, items in the positive and negative high-arousing contexts elicited more positive ERPs, which probably reflects an automatic process of attention capturing of high-arousing context as well as a conscious and effortful process of overcoming the interference of high-arousing context. During retrieval...

Current theories conceptualize return migration to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina as an individual-level assessment of costs and benefits. Since relocation is cost prohibitive, return migration is thought to be unlikely for vulnerable populations. However, recent analyses of longitudinal survey data suggest that these individuals are likely to return to New Orleans over time despite achieving socioeconomic gains in the post-disaster location. I extend the “context of reception” approach from the sociology of immigration and draw on longitudinal data from the Resilience in the Survivors of Katrina Project to demonstrate how institutional, labor market, and social contexts influence the decision to return. Specifically, I show how subjective comparisons of the three contexts between origin and destination, perceived experiences of discrimination within each context, and changing contexts over time explain my sample’s divergent migration and mobility outcomes. I conclude with implications for future research on, and policy responses to, natural disasters.; Sociology

This paper describes the coupling of contexts and ontologies for semantic integration in the ECOIN semantic interoperability framework. Ontological terms in ECOIN correspond to multiple related meanings in different contexts. Each ontology includes a context model that describes how a generic ontological term can be modified according to contextual choices to acquire specialized meanings. Although the basic ECOIN concepts have been presented in the past, this paper is the first to show how ECOIN addresses the case of "single-ontology with multiple contexts" with an example of semantic integration using our new prototype implementation.

Aim: To examine the perceptions and meanings of alcohol use in Denmark with specific focus on drinking contexts. Methods: A qualitative study using focus group interviews. The sample consisted of five focus groups of adults with one group for each of the following age groups: 16–20; 21–34; 35–44; 45–64; and 65–82 years. The groups consisted of both men and women with five to six participants in each group (27 in total). Results: Alcohol use is perceived as legitimate in many social contexts with few being defined as inappropriate. Drinking alone is mostly associated with having alcohol-related problems, but considered legitimate if it is characterized by activity. Drinking socially plays an important role in people’s considerations of legitimate use and seems to overrule the actual alcohol amount consumed. Different contexts influence different meanings of drinking with context and purpose changing with age and life stages. Conclusions: The social drinking context is pivotal in people’s perception of the legitimacy of their alcohol use, leaving the alcohol amount less important. This calls for the need to focus on and incorporate the drinking context within public health initiatives aimed at reducing high risk drinking...

In the last two decades numerous studies have been conducted to document the language learning gains in a second language (L2) thought to be prompted by study abroad (SA) programs. Although different research syntheses have been attempted to take stock of the findings involved, no review to date has been conducted with a view to analyze those studies in which researchers have compared the learning effects of SA contexts and those of at home (AH) regular classrooms. The present review is an attempt to identify the studies that have adopted this comparative approach and to critically assess the dimensions investigated, the methodology used and the main findings reported. A number of methodological issues awaiting to be addressed in future research are also discussed.; En las ??ltimas dos d??cadas se han llevado a cabo numerosos estudios cuyo objetivo es documentar los beneficios ling????sticos que reportan las estancias en el extranjero (SA) en la adquisici??n de una segunda lengua (L2). The need to consider context in organizational and leadership research has been highlighted by many scholars (e.g., Johns, 2006; Rousseau & Fried, 2001), and in today’s increasingly volatile world, the need to understand leadership in extreme environments has never been greater. This dissertation investigates the impacts of leadership in extreme contexts (i.e. where there exists “risks of severe physical, psychological or material consequences […] to organizational members or their constituents” Hannah, Uhl-Bien, Avolio, & Cavarretta, 2009, p. 897), using two studies in the extreme context of healthcare. Study 1 used growth-curve models to examine the changes in psychological outcomes (i.e. empathy, self-efficacy, daytime sleepiness) of medical and nursing students during their first eight-months of practical experience. Predictors of changes were also studied, including leadership behaviours (i.e. transformational leadership, laissez-faire leadership, abusive supervision), and context-relevant experiences (e.g., patient morbidity and mortality, beneficiary contact, boredom). Findings show that both leadership and context-relevant experiences influence the development of empathy, self-efficacy, and daytime sleepiness. Study 2 investigated the impact of leadership (i.e. transformational leadership...

This paper introduces a framework for inferring human activities in mobile devices by computing spatial contexts, temporal contexts, spatiotemporal contexts, and user contexts. A spatial context is a significant location that is defined as a geofence, which can be a node associated with a circle, or a polygon; a temporal context contains time-related information that can be e.g., a local time tag, a time difference between geographical locations, or a timespan; a spatiotemporal context is defined as a dwelling length at a particular spatial context; and a user context includes user-related information that can be the user’s mobility contexts, environmental contexts, psychological contexts or social contexts. Using the measurements of the built-in sensors and radio signals in mobile devices, we can snapshot a contextual tuple for every second including aforementioned contexts. Giving a contextual tuple, the framework evaluates the posteriori probability of each candidate activity in real-time using a Naïve Bayes classifier. A large dataset containing 710,436 contextual tuples has been recorded for one week from an experiment carried out at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi with three participants. The test results demonstrate that the multi-context solution significantly outperforms the spatial-context-only solution. A classification accuracy of 61.7% is achieved for the spatial-context-only solution...

This project examined adults' food cognitions by applying schema theory to explain how adults categorized foods for different contexts. Qualitative interviews and repeated card sort activities for different eating contexts were conducted to elicit as many food categories as possible from 42 US adults. Participants labeled card sort piles with their own words, providing 991 card sort labels. Qualitative analysis of the labels resulted in the emergence of 12 category types. Personal-experience-based types were specific to the individual (e.g. Preference). Context-based types were related to situational aspects of eating episodes (e.g. Location). Food-based types were related to intrinsic properties of the foods (e.g. Physical characteristics). Different combinations of the 12 category types were used for different eating contexts. Personal-experience and context-based types were used most frequently overall. Some category types were used more frequently for specific contexts (e.g. Convenience for work contexts). Food-based taxonomic category types were used most frequently when no context was defined. Script-oriented categories were more often used in response to specific eating contexts. These findings provide a framework to consider how individuals classify foods in real-life eating contexts. Attention to personal-experience and context-based category types may help improve understanding of relationships between knowledge and food choice behaviors.

In 2005, Holy and Guo advanced the idea that male mice produce ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) with some features similar to courtship songs of songbirds. Since then, studies showed that male mice emit USV songs in different contexts (sexual and other) and possess a multisyllabic repertoire. Debate still exists for and against plasticity in their vocalizations. But the use of a multisyllabic repertoire can increase potential flexibility and information, in how elements are organized and recombined, namely syntax. In many bird species, modulating song syntax has ethological relevance for sexual behavior and mate preferences. In this study we exposed adult male mice to different social contexts and developed a new approach of analyzing their USVs based on songbird syntax analysis. We found that male mice modify their syntax, including specific sequences, length of sequence, repertoire composition, and spectral features, according to stimulus and social context. Males emit longer and simpler syllables and sequences when singing to females, but more complex syllables and sequences in response to fresh female urine. Playback experiments show that the females prefer the complex songs over the simpler ones. We propose the complex songs are to lure females in...

This paper reports on part of the first phase of a longitudinal project investigating the development of academic language in English as the Language of Teaching and Learning (LoLT) by Foundation phase learners in two different educational contexts. In the first context, the learners were all English additional language (EAL) learners taught by EAL teachers. In the second context EAL and English first language (L1) learners were taught by L1 teachers in integrated classes. The three groups of Grade 1 learners were assessed on the semantic subtests of the Diagnostic Evaluation of Language Variation Criterion, Referenced Edition, which evaluate the psycholinguisticprocessing skills underlying lexical acquisition and organization. Vocabulary learning is central to the development of academic language and literacy. There were statistically significant differences between the three groups on all measures. The EAL learners in the first context had significantly lower scores than the EAL and L1 learners in the second context, and the EAL learners in the second context had significantly lower scores than their L1 peers. Pre-school exposure to English and gender did not have significant effects, except on the subtest assessing fast mapping of novel verbs. The results provide information on what can reasonably be expected from EAL learners in Grade 1...
