A short-term precision error of the individual subject and the DEXA technique, such as the effect of the repositioning of the cat on the examination table, were established. Four neutered adult cats (BW=4342g) and three females (BW=3459g) were submitted to five repeated scans with and without repositioning between them. Precision was estimated from the mean of the five measurements and expressed by the individual coefficient of variation (CV). The precision error of the technique was estimated by the variance of scan pool (n=35) and expressed in CV for the technique (CVt). The degrees of freedom and confidence intervals were determined to avoid underestimation of precision errors. Bone mineral content (BMC), lean mass (LM), and fat mass (FM) averages were higher (P<0.05) when animals were repositioned. The CVt was significantly higher (P<0.05) for bone mineral density (BMD), LM, and FM when the animals were repositioned. For short-term precision measurements, the repositioning of the animal was important to establish the precision of the technique. The dual energy x-ray absorptiometry method provided precision for body composition measurements in adult cats.

Background: Several studies have shown that liquid and food intake interfere with the evaluation of body composition in adults. However, since there are no reports about this interference in the elderly population, the need to fast for this evaluation may be dispensable. Objectives: The objective of the present study was to assess the influence of liquid and solid food on the measurement of body composition by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Design: Forty-one male volunteers aged 62 to 87 years participated in the study. The subjects were submitted to evaluation of body composition by DXA and BIA under fasting conditions and 1 hour after the ingestion of breakfast (500 ml of orange juice and one 50 g bread roll with butter). Results: There was no significant difference in the variables fat-free mass (FFM) or fat mass (FM) between the fasting condition and the evaluation performed 1 hour after the meal as measured by BIA or DXA. There was also no significant difference when the same variables were compared between methods. The prevention and treatment of diseases related to changes in body composition require accurate methods for the measurement of body composition. However, few studies have dealt specifically with the assessment of body composition of undernourished older subjects by different methodologies. To assess the body composition of undernourished older subjects by two different methods, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and bioelectric impedance (BIA), and to compare results with those of an eutrophic group. The study model was cross-sectional; the study was performed at the University Hospital of the School of Medicine of Ribeiro Preto, University of So Paulo, Brazil. Forty-one male volunteers aged 62 to 91 years. The groups were selected on the basis of anamnesis, physical examination and nutritional assessment according to the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) score. Body composition was assessed by DXA and BIA. Body weight, arm and calf circumference, body mass index (BMI), fat free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) were significantly lower in the undernourished group as compared to the eutrophic group. There were no significant differences between FFM and FM mean values determined by DXA and BIA in both groups, but the agreement between methods in the undernourished group was less strong. Our results suggest caution when BIA is to be applied in studies including undernourished older subjects. IMPORTÂNCIA: Mudanças significativas na composição corporal ocorrem com o envelhecimento, havendo aumento progressivo da massa gorda e redução da massa magra. Este quadro está associado à perda de força e mobilidade, ao aumento da morbidade e mortalidade. Nos indivíduos diabéticos tipo 2, esta condição é agravada pelas alterações metabólicas impostas pela doença. OBJETIVO: Comparar as medidas da composição corporal de idosas diabéticas tipo 2 pelo método antropométrico e raio-x de dupla varredura (DEXA), e correlacioná-las à força de preensão da mão. MÉTODOS: Cinqüenta e três voluntárias de 60 a 70 anos, com índice de massa corporal (IMC, kg/m2) de 19 a 44, do Ambulatório de Diabetes do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo, foram avaliadas por: medidas antropométricas, raio-x de dupla varredura e força de preensão da mão. Background: Among adults, obesity has been positively related to bone mineral density. However, recent findings have pointed out that abdominal obesity could be negatively related to bone density. The above mentioned relationship is not clear among pediatric populations. Therefore, this cross-sectional study analyzed the relationship between thickness of abdominal adipose tissue and bone mineral variables in sedentary obese children and adolescents.Methods: One hundred and seventy five obese children and adolescents (83 male and 92 female) with ages ranging from 6 to 16 years-old were analyzed. Bone mineral content and density were estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and ultrasound equipment which estimated the thickness of the abdominal adipose tissue. Pubertal stage was self-reported by the participants.Results: The mean age was 11.1 (SD = 2.6). Thickness of the abdominal adipose tissue was negatively related to bone mineral density (r = -0.17 [r95%CI: -0.03;-0.32]), independent of gender, pubertal stage and other confounders (β = -0.134 ± 0.042 [β95%CI: -0.217; -0.050]).Conclusions: In sedentary obese children and adolescents abdominal obesity is negatively related to bone mineral density, suggesting a potential link between abdominal obesity and osteoporosis. © 2013 Júnior et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

To assess barriers to bone mineral density testing in individuals with chronic spinal cord injury, a cross-sectional study of 20 individuals with spinal cord injury was conducted with assessment of physical and logistical barriers to dual energy x-ray absorptiometry scanning. We identified several barriers including scanner design and configuration in the scanning room that limited accessibility, increased typical scanning time, and made additional staff necessary. In order for dual energy x-ray absorptiometry to become a routine component of ongoing care in spinal cord injury medicine, we recommend the following changes: (1) install ceiling-mounted hydraulic lifts and grab bars to facilitate transfers in the scanning room; (2) increase staffing during scans; (3) increase time allotment for scans, (4) install the scanner in an adequately-sized room, and (5) partner with administrators and staff to raise awareness of access issues faced by individuals with spinal cord injury.

Obesity is the major risk factor for metabolic syndrome and through it diabetes as well as cardiovascular disease. Visceral fat (VF) rather than subcutaneous fat (SF) is the major predictor of adverse events. Currently, the reference standard for measuring VF is abdominal X-ray computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), requiring highly used clinical equipment. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) can accurately measure body composition with high-precision, low X-ray exposure, and short-scanning time. The purpose of this study was to validate a new fully automated method whereby abdominal VF can be measured by DXA. Furthermore, we explored the association between DXA-derived abdominal VF and several other indices for obesity: BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and DXA-derived total abdominal fat (AF), and SF. We studied 124 adult men and women, aged 18–90 years, representing a wide range of BMI values (18.5–40 kg/m2) measured with both DXA and CT in a fasting state within a one hour interval. The coefficient of determination (r2) for regression of CT on DXA values was 0.959 for females, 0.949 for males, and 0.957 combined. The 95% confidence interval for r was 0.968 to 0.985 for the combined data. The 95% confidence interval for the mean of the differences between CT and DXA VF volume was −96.0 to −16.3 cm3. People with intellectual disability are more likely to be obese and extremely obese than people without intellectual disability with rates remaining elevated among adults, women and individuals living in community settings. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measured the effects of a 13-week aquatic exercise and nutrition intervention on percent body fat in eight adults with intellectual disabilities (aged 41.0 ± 13.7 yrs) of varying fat levels (15%–39%) from two group homes. A moderate to vigorous aquatic exercise program lasted for the duration of 13 weeks with three, one-hour sessions held at a 25m pool each week. Nutritional assistants educated participants as to the importance of food choice and portion size. A two-tailed Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test determined the impact of the combined intervention on body fat percentage and BMI at pre and post test. Median body fat percentage (0.8 %) and BMI (0.3 kg/m2) decreased following the exercise intervention, but neither were statistically significant, p = .11 and p = .55, respectively. The combined intervention was ineffective at reducing percent body fat in adults with intellectual disability according to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. These results are in agreement with findings from exercise alone interventions and suggest that more stringent nutritional guidelines are needed for this population and especially for individuals living in group home settings. The study did show that adults with intellectual disability may participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity when given the opportunity.

The ability to accurately measure body or carcass composition is important for performance testing, grading and finally selection or payment of meat-producing animals. Advances especially in non-invasive techniques are mainly based on the development of electronic and computer-driven methods in order to provide objective phenotypic data. The preference for a specific technique depends on the target animal species or carcass, combined with technical and practical aspects such as accuracy, reliability, cost, portability, speed, ease of use, safety and for in vivo measurements the need for fixation or sedation. The techniques rely on specific device-driven signals, which interact with tissues in the body or carcass at the atomic or molecular level, resulting in secondary or attenuated signals detected by the instruments and analyzed quantitatively. INTRODUÇÃO: A Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) é considerada o método mais acurado para avaliação da composição corporal. Com o aumento progressivo da sobrevida em prematuros tem ocorrido um interesse crescente em relação a avaliação nutricional, uma vez que uma alimentação adequada nas primeiras semanas de vida influencia o desenvolvimento a longo prazo. Portanto a avaliação da composição corporal é de fundamental importância nos cuidados nutricionais dos prematuros.OBJETIVO: Avaliar a composição corporal através da Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry em recém-nascidos prematuros alimentados com leite humano suplementado (FM85® . Nestlé Nutrition) ou leite humano.MÉTODOS: Foram estudados 26 recém-nascidos prematuros com menos de 1500g de peso ao nascimento, durante a internação na UTI Neonatal do Hospital São Lucas da PUCRS, entre julho de 2006 e janeiro de 2010. Os recém-nascidos foram randomizados em dois grupos: o grupo 1 recebeu leite humano acrescido de FM85® e o grupo 2 que recebeu leite humano sem FM85®. Foram registrados as medidas antopométricas. The aim of this study was to assess body composition and anthropometry of the elderly with regard to agreement between methods, development and validation of predictive equations and cutoffs. We evaluated 132 elderly patients (52 men and 80 women) aged between 60 and 91 years, users of primary health care, not institutionalized and drawn at random in proportion to the nine health districts of Goiânia, GO. For collection of anthropometric measurements, bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), standardized procedures were used by trained examiners and equipment was calibrated regularly. Analyses were performed using STATA/SE. Descriptive analysis, tests for comparison of means, equation validation according to criteria suggested by Lohman, Bland-Altman and Lin graphic analysis and ROC (receiver operator characteristic curve) analysis were carried out. The project was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Goias. The Durnin and Womersley equation showed the highest concordance correlation coefficient (CCC = 0.846) and the lowest mean differences (MD = - 2.335) for males. The equations of Lean et al. (for men) and Deurenberg et al. (for women) showed the highest correlation with and lowest mean differences from DEXA. Objetivo Comparar a antropometria ao exame de Raios-x de dupla varredura para estimativa da composição corporal de idosas diabéticas tipo 2. Métodos A composição corporal de 51 voluntárias de 60 a 70 anos de idade e índice de massa corporal de 19 a 43kg/m² foi avaliada pelas medidas antropométricas das dobras cutâneas do tríceps, suprailíaca e coxa e associadas ao exame de Raios-x de dupla varredura, considerado o padrão ouro. Os intervalos de concordância de Bland e Altman foram os valores do desvio-padrão do coeficiente de variação do exame de Raios-x de dupla varredura e os valores da antropometria deviam estar nessa faixa. Foram comparadas as médias (teste t de Student) e feita a correlação de Pearson. OBJECTIVES: To longitudinally assess bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and whole-body lean mass obtained through bone densitometry by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in preterm newborns (PTNs) and compare them with full-term newborns (FTNs) from birth to 6 months of corrected postnatal age. METHODS: A total of 28 adequate for gestational age (AGA) newborns were studied: 14 preterm and 14 full-term newborns. DXA was used to determine BMC, BMD, and lean mass in three moments: 40 weeks corrected post-conceptual age, as well as 3 and 6 months of corrected postnatal age. PTNs had gestational age ≤ 32 weeks at birth and were fed their mother's own milk or milk from the human milk bank. RESULTS: All infants had an increase in BMC, BMD, and lean body mass values during the study. PTNs had lower BMC, BMD, and lean mass at 40 weeks of corrected post-conceptual age in relation to FTNs (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.047, respectively). However, there was an acceleration in the mineralization process of PTNs, which was sufficient to achieve the normal values of FTNs at 6 months of corrected age. OBJECTIVES--To develop a method of measuring hand bone mineral content (BMC) by dual energy x ray absorptiometry (DXA); to apply this method of measuring hand BMC to normal volunteers to ascertain causes of variability; and to measure hand BMC in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) of varying duration and severity. METHODS--The x ray beam of the Hologic QDR 1000 dual energy x ray absorptiometer was hardened by introducing a perspex-aluminium plate and the analysis software altered to allow for the small tissue bulk of the hand compared with the torso. Ninety five volunteers (46 men age 24-81 and 49 women age 20-83) had scans of both hands. Eight volunteers were assessed repeatedly to establish reproducibility and effect of hand position. Fifty six patients (22 men, 34 women, age range 25-86 years) with RA of differing duration and severity, had hand BMC measurement by DXA. RESULTS--The precision of BMC measurement was 2.3% with no additional variation due to hand position. Hand dominance had no significant effect on BMC. In men, hand BMC correlated with height (r = 0.57, p < 0.0001), weight (r = 0.58, p < 0.0001), forearm span (r = 0.5, p = 0.0006) and hand volume (r = 0.66, p < 0.0001). INTRODUCTION: The individual with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can experience a significant reduction of body composition, peripheral muscle dysfunction, resulting in a negative influence on functional capacity. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the influence of body composition assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry on functional capacity of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven male patients with COPD (COPDG), seven presenting moderate obstruction and four severe, and 11 sedentary male subjects (CG) were evaluated by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry to assess their body composition. All subjects also performed the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and Step Test (6MST) to assess their functional capacity. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between groups for anthropometric data such as age, weight, height and body mass index (BMI). However, the COPDG presented Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio, Maximal Voluntary Ventilation (MVV), Walked Distance (WD) and Number of Steps (NS) significantly lower than the CG (p < 0.05, Student's t-test). O objetivo desta revisão foi reunir as informações relevantes na literatura sobre os temas: tecido ósseo, validações e limitações da absortometria de raio-X de dupla energia. Para tanto, foram analisados estudos nacionais e internacionais indexados no banco de dados PubMed, Lilacs e Nuteses. Os aspectos discutidos foram: maturação do tecido ósseo, tecido ósseo em diferentes populações, impacto de programas de intervenção sobre o tecido ósseo, absortometria de raio-X de dupla energia, bem como suas validações e limitações. A partir dos dados encontrados na literatura, algumas constatações podem ser realizadas. A densidade mineral óssea se modifi ca durante as diferentes fases da vida, infância, adolescência, idade adulta e terceira idade; pode ser infl uenciada, além da idade, pela etnia, sexo, fatores genéticos e estilo de vida. Fica evidente, tanto para a saúde quanto para os aspectos sociais e econômicos da sociedade, a importância do monitoramento da densidade mineral óssea. Neste sentido, vários estudos confi rmam a validade da absortometria de raio-X de dupla energia para a mensuração da composição corporal (osso, gordura e músculo). Modlesky, Christopher; Background: Assessment of body composition is important in determining energy needs. This is particularly important in children with limited mobility and poor nutritional status such as children with cerebral palsy (CP). One of the most accurate methods for assessing body composition is dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), but for children with difficulty controlling their movement, this can be difficult. The BodyFIX is a novel immobilization device that has been developed to limit motion during medical procedures and may allow for accurate assessment of body composition by DXA in children with movement disorders. However, no studies have tested the accuracy of body composition measurements by DXA when the BodyFIX is used to limit subject motion. To this end, national and international studies indexed on the Pubmed, Lilacs and Nuteses databases were analyzed. The features discussed were: bone tissue maturation, bone tissue in different populations, the impact of intervention programs on bone tissue, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and its validation and limitations. According to data found in the literature, certain observations can be made. Bone mineral density changes during the different stages of life, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age; it can also be influenced by race, sex, genetic factors and life style in addition to by age. The importance of monitoring bone mineral density, both to good health and to social and economic aspects of society, is evident. Studies have confirmed the efficacy of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for measuring body composition (bone, fat and muscle). However, in recent studies, although few in number, some limitations of using this equipment have been noted, which may affect its accuracy.
