This study focuses on the concept Managing Emotions from Emotional Intelligence (I.E.), (Mayer-Salovey, 1990, 1997, Goleman, 1995), also identified as Emotional Regulation (Bisquerra, 2000), to obtain recognition and practical use of this concept, through the use of Emotional Fitness charts (Bimbela-Pedrola, 2008), to develop these abilities and manage emotions in contexts of practical life. Objective: To train preschool teachers, as well as primary and lower secondary school teachers to confront negative emotions by using selfregulatory strategies (identifying errors of thought and changing negative emotions/thoughts to positive thoughts/emotions). Method: A transversal, descriptive and qualitative study, using "grounded theory" methodology, with semi-structured interviews conducted to a purposive sample of 60 subjects: 7 preschool teachers and 53 primary and lower secondary school teachers, aged 22 to 59, from January to March 2011. To operationalise the Emotions Management concept the proposed work consisted of two activities: firstly, to identify the nine most common errors of thought (Bimbela-Pedrola, 2008), namely: Mental filter, Labelling, Overgeneralisation, Overreacting, Catastrophism, Mind reading, Error of control in excess...

Adicionalmente, são apresentadas algumas sugestões para a investigação futura.; Over the last decades, emotions have assumed their rightful place in sport psychology research. Emotions are currently one of the most productive themes in the literature in this field. This paper opens by analysing some basic conceptual and methodological issues concerning the definition...

With the present article we intend to clarify if the type of conflict present in work teams has significant impact on teams’ affective outcomes (positive and negative emotions). Moreover, we aim to test the hypothesis that the link between task conflict and team emotions is mediated by socio-affective conflict. Data was collected from 60 teams/groups of several different functions and organizational contexts, from industry, services and sports. The Intragroup Conflict Assessment Scale (EACI; Dimas, Lourenço & Miguez, 2005) was used to evaluate the kind of conflict emerging in the team/group; emotions were assessed using the Portuguese Job Related affective well-Being Scale (PJAWS; Ramalho, Monteiro, Lourenço & Figueiredo, 2008).We found that socio-affective conflict has a significantly higher connection with negative emotions than task conflict and that socio-affective conflict mediates the positive relationship between task and negative emotions as well as the negative relationship between task conflict and positive emotions.

Mastering Emotions: The Emotional Politics of Slavery explores how the emotions and affective norms of the Antebellum South were conditioned upon and constructed through the institution of slavery. Though slavery is a subject wrought with emotion, there has been no focus in recent historical scholarship on the affective dimensions of slavery. Studies in the history of emotion have also largely ignored slavery. My intervention in these fields reveals the ways that both slaveholders and slaves wielded fear, trust, jealousy, and affection in their interactions with one another. The project also sheds light on how the emotional norms of societies are learned and policed, manipulated and enforced. I argue that the emotions of slaveholders and slaves alike were irrevocably shaped by slavery. The daily negotiations and contestations that occurred between slaveholders and slaves through and about feelings, in conjunction with larger debates about race, freedom, and emotional norms, form the backbone of what I call the emotional politics of slavery. Mastering Emotions examines how the affective norms of slavery were taught, how emotional transgressions were punished, and the long-term impacts of those emotional norms on the affective landscape of the post-Reconstruction South. To gain insight into the emotional lives and affective experiences of enslaved people of color I use a variety of primary sources such as slave narratives...

Les résultats suggèrent également l’existence de propriétés chevauchantes entre l’alexithymie et la dysphorie indifférenciée.; Emotion regulation is a psychobiological function that may be disrupted by childhood environmental factors...

Le présent mémoire s’intéresse à ces deux familles théoriques et a pour mission de confronter les hypothèses précédemment mentionner dans le but de répondre à la question suivante : les émotions sont-elles variables culturellement ou bien sont-elles universelles?; Researchers interested in the study of emotions are generally divided into two groups - each of which possesses a different way of perceiving the emotional experience and understanding its foundations. These two groups are at the basis of two distinct schools of thoughts: that of discreet emotions and that of dimensional emotions. The former...

peer-reviewed; How do positive emotions influence morality? Asking myself this relevant question, led to the goal to make predictions on the impact of various positive emotions on moral judgments and behaviors. In my PhD research, I approached this goal by developing a theoretical framework and conducting empirical studies. The newly developed theoretical framework was given the name ‘full-perspective hypothesis’ and provided predictions on which positive emotions were expected to increase (e.g., optimism) or decrease (e.g., love) moral outcomes. To test these predictions, I measured how various positive emotions influence moral outcomes in different ways and examined the processes that underlie these effects. This research program resulted in 4 empirical chapters in which the full-perspective hypothesis was tested (all empirical chapters are submitted to be considered for publication). First, as a basis for the predictions, the effects of 14 positive emotions on particular mindsets were measured. When people experience a positive emotion that gives them a sense of goal-fulfillment and makes them focus on specific (i.e., short-term, individual) aspects of life, they are predicted to judge and behave less morally compared when they experience a positive emotion that gives them a perception that one’s goal are not fulfilled yet and make them focus on global (i.e....

Examining Board: Professor Donatella della Porta, EUI (Supervisor) Professor James Jasper, City University of New York Professor Micheal Keating, EUI, University of Aberdeen Professor Brian Doherty, Keele University.; Defence date: 18 October 2013; The aims of this research are to explore the role of emotions in social movements, specifically the dynamic properties of emotions and the various ways in which they can provoke, sustain, or end activism. The case studies involved animal rights and welfare groups in the UK and US. The concept of emotions is one which has come to the fore in recent years as part of the 'cultural turn,’ but it still suffers from unclear definitions and the remnants of stigma. In this thesis I propose to study emotions by focusing on their role as activators, part of protestors agency and intrinsically linked to their thoughts and actions. To do so I look at the 'life cycle’ of activism and the various roles played by the difference emotions inherent in each stage growing interest, finding likeminded others, joining a group, the process of bonding, the establishment of ties, then the eventual dissolution or constant reaffirmation of identification as an activist. By exploring the part played by emotions in these various stages...

Family carers assume responsibility for much of patients' treatment coordination and emotional support, saving medical systems billions by reducing the number and duration of hospital admissions. However, in doing so, they tend to suffer high rates of psychosocial morbidity. While much is known about the experiences of cancer patients and carers of a family member with other diseases, little is known about the experiences and support services preferences of people caring for a spouse with cancer. Past research on this population is largely psycho-oncology based and emphasises carers' stress, burden and coping strategies. Using qualitative methods including participant observation, questionnaires, interviews and a focus group, this research provides an experience-driven understanding of these carers' experiences and support service preferences. Findings suggest that these carers experience a distinct kind of anticipatory grief: indefinite loss and indefinite grief. These concepts, referring to vacillating and uncertain anticipatory loss and grief, are presented as a more accurate conceptualisation of these carers' experiences of mourning and uncertainty about the future. Findings also show that carers of a spouse with cancer experience temporal anomie...

In this theoretical work we seek to understand Vygotsky's elaborations on the issue of emotions. This study investigated the emotions attributed to supervisors and employees involved in a work interaction in three different countries This research is based on Kemper's social interactional theory of emotions and the Algoe, Buswell and DeLamaters' studies. 238 people participated in this study: 100 were from Spain, 38 from England and 100 were from Brazil. From the total, 73 were male and 158 female (7 did not respond). The goal was to investigate whether the emotions attributed to supervisors and employees are influenced by information of professional status (employee or supervisor) and actor's sex (male or female). Also, whether the emotions attributed varied according to country and work experience. Four experimental conditions were created, they varied in sex and professional status. Previous studies concluded that professional status has more impact than sex on the attribution of emotions in the work place. The results of this study indicate that interaction at work is perceived as harmonious by participants from all three countries. However, positive emotions were attributed to supervisors more frequently - that shows the importance of professional status. Women attributed more negative emotions than men. The facial expression of sadness was the most chosen for employees and supervisors...

Marketers seek to create and consumers seek to cultivate a variety of positive emotional experiences. Despite their importance to consumer behavior, researchers have lacked a clear understanding of the distinct behavioral consequences of specific positive emotions. My dissertation examines how different positive emotions (e.g., hope, love, and pride) can differentially affect consumers' decisions and behaviors. I find that positive emotions can not only be differentiated but also that specific positive emotions lead to distinctly different patterns of consumption behavior, such as considering more options, donating in different ways, engaging in more effortful actions, or performing more socially conscious consumption behaviors benefiting distant others. I find important differences both with momentary emotional experiences and downstream consequences of chronic emotional experiences.

Positive emotions differ reliably in the degree to which they create a lens of problem-solving, social connection, and perceived control. For example, I find that positive emotions characterized by a social connection lens (e.g., love and gratitude) lead to increases in socially conscious behaviors benefiting distant others. The tendency to perceive one's environment through a problem-solving lens (which characterizes hope and interest but not love and gratitude) leads to larger consideration sets and engagement in more effortful environmental actions. I also examine how positive emotions characterized by different lenses...
