The function of the cerebellum in motor control is a long-standing puzzle because cerebellar damage is associated with both timing and coordination deficits. Timing is the ability to produce consistent intervals between movements based on an internal representation of time. Coordination, in contrast, is a state-dependent control process where motor commands to one effector depend on the predicted state of another effector. Here we considered a task consisting of two components, an arm movement and an isometric press with the thumb. We found that when the two components temporally overlapped, the brain controlled the thumb using an estimate of the state of the arm. In contrast, when the components did not temporally overlap, the brain controlled the thumb solely based on an internal estimate of time. Using fMRI, we contrasted these two conditions and found that lobule V of the cerebellum ipsilateral to the arm movement was consistently more activated during state-dependent control. When the brain learned time-dependent control, no region of the cerebellum showed consistently increased activity compared to state-dependent control. Rather, the consistent activity associated with time-dependent control was found in language areas of the left cerebral hemisphere along the Sylvian fissure. We suggest that timing and coordination are behaviorally distinct modes of motor control...

Coordination of different business activities among units becomes vital as organizations pay much attention to their core activities. Thus, their fruitfulness constantly relies on their capacity to coordinate their internal and external activities in the supply chain outside their own boundaries. Giving consideration to these obvious reasons, this paper aims to investigate the determinants of supply chain coordination of milk and dairy industries. The data were collected from 330 milk suppliers, processors, and retailers in the central part of Ethiopia. The structural equation modeling has been employed to develop the structural relationship between key constructs and measured variables. In total, 15 measured variables for coordination in the supply chain have been identified. These are further grouped into four factors namely, non-price coordination, price coordination, relationships and product development decision. It has been observed that the implementation of these factors could maximize the coordination linkage among supply chain members. Thus, dairy sectors should take the identified coordination factors into account in each of their business dealings.

peer-reviewed; Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury continues to be a constant adversary to field sports athletes. Females are widely acknowledged as being at an increased risk of ACL injury, in comparison to males. Athletes who are successful in rehabilitation after surgery and return to their sport are reported to have an increased risk of repeated ACL injury and the development of osteoarthritis. The current thesis utilised a novel, maximal drop-jump land and unanticipated cutting task to assess the lower limb biomechanics of uninjured male and females, and previously ACL injured subjects (ACLr). Discrete measures of lower limb kinematics and kinetics were firstly compared between uninjured males and females, and secondly between the previously injured (PI) leg of ACLr subjects and both the contralateral non-injured (NI) leg and an uninjured subject’s control leg. The results show that females had increased hip internal rotation, the PI leg was not significantly different to the NI leg but was different to the control subject’s leg with increased hip flexion, internal knee abduction moment and transverse plane knee ROM. Lower limb coordination was assessed in the ACLr subjects and both legs of the ACLr subjects had similar coordination patterns. The PI leg however showed different coordination patterns than the control subject’s leg for a number of couplings. Movement and coordination variability were also utilised for a gender and ACLr – control comparison. The female subjects and the PI leg had lower levels of movement and coordination variability than males and the contralateral non-injured leg respectively. The PI leg however...

Emerging market subsidiaries constitute an increasingly important asset for the innovative activities of multinational corporations (MNCs). This study examines how different types of these subsidiaries may be integrated into global R&D using two essential coordination mechanisms — hierarchical control and internal markets (competition among MNC units). Based on a sample of 146 Brazil based MNC subsidiaries, the key results suggest that (1) more innovative subsidiaries have higher autonomy than less innovative subsidiary as long as they have local market scope; (2) subsidiaries which develop new products for global or other emerging markets have competitive relationships with peer MNC units. Likewise, the results provide some preliminary support for an instrument which measures competition among MNC unit. Based on a comprehensive classification framework, the study puts forward some recommendations for MNC technology management regarding how subsidiary product development units may extend their market scope and technological capabilities.; Dirk Michael Boehe

This thesis provides an account of the synthesis and study of fifteen amide-containing polypyridyl ligands, eleven of which are new compounds. These ligands all possess at least one amide moiety, potentially capable of anion binding and one or more pendant pyridyl donor groups as the metal coordinating sites. A further evolution over previously reported compounds is that a majority of the amide compounds incorporate a pre-organised amide component that will constitute the anion binding region. The alkyl and phenyl spacers were utilised to confer flexibility to these compounds and to extend the spacing between the anion binding moiety and the pendant metal complexing groups. The compounds investigated in this work are divided into three categories; (i) unsymmetrical monoamide ligands that possess one amide functional group, one ester protected carboxylate and one external donor pyridyl moiety; (ii) symmetrical flexible amide ligands that possess two or more internal amide groups and two external pyridyl metal coordinating sites, and; (iii) symmetrical amide bridging ligands that incorporate two di-2-pyridylmethylamine chelating motifs. The coordination chemistry and metallo-supramolecular chemistry of these ligands was investigated with a range of late transition metals including cadmium(II)...

This phenomenon is known as “Europeanisation” and has been subject to intensive research. The following study of the Green parliamentary group (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) in the German Bundestag exemplifies the Europeanisation of a category of actors that has so far remained unstudied in spite of its relevance for the Europeanisation of national parliaments in general. An institutionalist approach is developed to explore four dimensions of the parliamentary group’s Europeanisation: the formation of specialist expertise...

Even though the role of the European Union (EU) in international organizations has generated increasing academic and political interest, scant attention has been devoted to the EU’s participation in the Group of Eight (G8). The launch of the renewed Group of Twenty (G20), however, has sparked intense debate among member states about the way in which the EU is represented in the G8 system. The central issue covered in this paper is the participation of the EU in the G8 system. In particular, we focus on the involvement of the 23 non-G8 EU members (EU23) and the role of the European Commission and the Council Presidency. The focus lies on the internal EU level, rather than on the question of the EU’s bargaining power at the international level. The paper draws on insights of Moravcsik’s liberal intergovernmentalism to explain the variation of the EU23’s involvement in the following policy domains: development aid, energy, finance and monetary affairs and trade. The paper finds a pattern of differing involvement that varies along the lines of the three forums within the G8 system: low involvement in the G8, medium involvement in the G20 and high involvement in the Group of Seven (G7). Four factors are suggested that explain the involvement of the EU23 in the internal EU coordination process: internal competences...

Loyola de Palacio Programme on Energy Policy; Cross-border trade remains a contentious issue in the restructuring of the European electricity market. Difficulties stem from the lack of a common market design, the separation between energy and transmission markets and the insufficient coordination between Transmission System Operators (TSOs). This paper analyzes the cross-border trade problem through a set of models that represent different degrees of coordination both between the energy and transmission markets and among national TSOs. We first present the optimal organisation, not implemented in Europe, where energy and transmission are integrated according to the nodal price paradigm and Power Exchanges (PXs) and Transmission System Operators (TSOs) are integrated. This is our reference case. We then move to a more realistic representation of the European electricity market based on the so-called marketcoupling design where energy and transmission are operated separately by PXs and TSOs. When considering different degrees of coordination of the national TSOs' activities, we unexpectedly find that some arrangements are more efficient than the lack of coordination might suggest. Specifically we find that even without a formal coordination of the TSOs' counter-trading operations...

Uttar Pradesh (UP) is India's most populous State, and one of the poorest. Serious fiscal problems have emerged since the 1990s: the revenue deficit has increased significantly over the years, as well as the fiscal deficit, and, arrangements for accountability in the public sector have been undermined. Procedures exist for budgeting and monitoring the use of public resources, but there is little incentive to follow them. The Comptroller and Auditor General of India questions numerous departmental actions each year, but there is no compulsion on the executive branch to provide prompt answers, and to make necessary changes. Some useful progress has been made in implementing the financial management reform program over the last three years, as follows: 1) Computerization of the Treasuries in a network system has been completed at state government level, enabling the Government to monitor cash flows and prevent excess expenditures; 2) a Directorate of Internal Audit has been established in the Department of Finance to provide central leadership...

The study of visually-guided reaching has been a meaningful tool to investigate sensory-motor coordination in typical development and different clinical paediatric populations. The aim of this study was to characterize the development of multi-joint reaching behaviour in children and youth, from 5 to 16 years of age, allowing us to capture changes that may occur into adolescence. Participants were 68 able-bodied children and youth, with no history of developmental, educational or social problems. A stratified recruitment strategy was used to adequately represent five age groups: I (5-6 years), II (7-8 years), III (9-10 years), IV (11-13 years) and V (14-16 years). A center-out reaching task was used as it allowed us to measure effects of limb mechanics during reaching. Different patterns of inter-segmental motions at the shoulder and elbow joints were needed to reach the different targets: flexion at both joints, extension at both joints, and a mixed-coordination pattern. Children were asked to reach quickly and accurately to 8 targets located at 45 degree intervals around the perimeter of a circle with a 6 cm radius. The development of reaching was described using non-parametric statistics. The global features of path length and total movement decreased as a function of increasing age...

BACKGROUND: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is considered a major health problem among school-aged children worldwide. Although there are several instruments to identify children with DCD, none of them are translated into Portuguese and validated to be used in Brazil. OBJECTIVES: Considering that a parent questionnaire is a simple and effective method to screen children with DCD, this study describes the adaptation of the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ) and the pilot testing with Brazilian children. METHODS:Translation of the DCDQ into Portuguese was conducted according to current guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation of instruments. The questionnaire was completed by parents of 15 children with motor coordination problems and parents of 30 children who were typically developing, matched for age. Five parents randomly selected from each group completed the questionnaire twice, to examine test-retest reliability. The parent's opinion regarding the quality of the questionnaire was recorded. RESULTS: 91% of Brazilian parents reported no difficulty in completing the DCDQ. Examination of psychometric properties revealed that two items had limitations due to cultural differences. After item substitution...

This paper investigates the relationship between [MNC] coordination mechanisms and subsidiary new product development [NPD] activities. We focus on two essentially different coordination mechanisms, internal markets and global decision-making autonomy, and argue that both mechanisms are likely to increase a subsidiary's exposure to market forces which, in turn, provides different kinds of incentives for a subsidiary's in-house NPD and NPD outsourcing. We tested our hypotheses using structural equations modeling. The results suggest that internal markets have a positive effect on NPD outsourcing while global autonomy has a positive effect on inhouse NPD. Thus, this study contributes to integrating the internal market construct with the coordination mechanism stream of literature.

Chem. Soc. (2009).

Classic literature on organizations recognizes that the paramount function of an organization is the coordination of physical and human assets to produce a good or service (e.g., Barnard, 1938; Chisholm, 1989; Schein, 1985). Coordination in this early literature was defined broadly, as for example by Mooney (1947, p. 5): "Coordination therefore, is the orderly arrangement of group effort, to provide unity of action in the pursuit of a common purpose." Mooney argues further that coordination is the first principle of organization and that any other organizational principles "are simply principles through which coordination operates and thus becomes effective" (p. 5). The landmark work of Thompson (1967) distinguished kinds of interdependence that give rise to coordination problems and ways in which coordination might occur - for example, by standardization, planning, or mutual adjustment. Coordination also plays a central role in recent thinking about the economics of internal organization (Becker & Murphy, 1992; Milgrom & Roberts, 1992), the history of business organization (Lamoreaux & Raff, 1995, esp. p. 5), core competencies in business strategy, mutualism and legitimation in organizational evolution, macroeconomics (Cooper & John...

Objective. To describe the development and initial validation of the self-administered Client Perceptions of Coordination Questionnaire. Design. The instrument was developed between 1996 and 1997 through iterative item generation; within a framework of six domains of coordination, addressed across four sectors of health care provision. Setting. 1193 individuals with complex and chronic health care needs as judged by their general practitioners (GPs), who were participants in a 2-year randomized controlled trial of a coordinated care intervention in Australia. Other samples were collected in one general practice (98) and from attendees of a chronic pain management course (29). Main measures. Face and content validity, completion rates, transferability, internal consistency, and construct validity of the 32-item instrument. Results. Most items achieved excellent completion and comprehension rates. The instrument was transferable to another chronically unwell population. Cronbach's alpha of the entire instrument was 0.92, and for six individual scales scores ranged from 0.31 to 0.86. The six scales based on principal components analysis were acceptability, received care, GP, nominated provider, client comprehension, and client capacity. The first four scales were satisfactory...
