It is not an overstatement to say that knowledge is today the most important asset that a company may have. Businesses already recognize the need to manage knowledge and how fundamental it is for them to structure themselves and adopt management practices in relation to knowledge.

This article main objective is to identify the organizations processes which facilitate knowledge sharing, application and impacts on organizational practices. The research question for this study was: what are the impacts of the knowledge sharing processes on organizational practices? The research was qualitative and also quantitative. The qualitative approach involved semi structured group interviews with the goal to identify forms of knowledge sharing and collaboration among co-workers and also from document analysis on organizational evidences: reports, procedure sheets and manuals and also from observation grids filled during factory visits. These techniques were used to better understand the context and the processes they used to share knowledge within one organization from the heat water sector. The quantitative methodology was applied through a questionnaire filled in by workers from several sectors and departments of the organization. The study reveals as main findings the main forms used for knowledge sharing: suggestion boxes, several types of workshops and several transversal projects of improvement, quality and maintenance; and the main impacts of knowledge sharing in the organizational practices of Alpha organization.

This study offers a detailed case study of how Toyota facilitates interorganizational knowledge transfers among within its production network. In particular, we identiify and examine six key institutionalized knowledge sharing routines developed by Toyota and its suppliers. By examining how Toyota facilitates knowledge-sharing with, and among, suppliers we are able to identify the key variables which influence interorganizational and network learning. Moreover, since Toyota is early in the process of creating a learning network with U.S. suppliers, we explore the creation and evolution of Toyota?s new learning "network" in the United States. We attempt to extrapolate from Toyota?s experience by developing a series of propositions regarding creating and designing a high performance knowledge-sharing network. We believe our analysis provides at least a partial explanation for why Toyota has been able to maintain its productivity and quality advantages long after the principles of the Toyota Production system have diffised throughout the industry (Knowledge Sharing, Interorganizational Learning, Competitive Advantage).

A successful knowledge-sharing effort requires a focus on more than simply the transfer of the specific knowledge. Instead, many of the activities to be undertaken need to focus on structuring and implementing the arrangement in a way that bridges both existing and potential relationship issues, and examining the form and location of the knowledge to ensure its complete transfer. In other words, while the activities used to share knowledge, such as document exchanges, presentations, job rotations, etc., are important, overcoming the factors that can impede, complicate and even harm knowledge internalization are equally important in determining the ultimate results of a knowledge-sharing effort. Accordingly, any evaluations of the Bank s knowledge-sharing efforts need to incorporate assessments of its use of activities related to understanding the form and embedded knowledge, establishing and managing appropriate administrative structures, and facilitating the transfer of the knowledge.

Each disaster presents itself with a unique set of characteristics that are hard to determine a priori. Thus disaster management tasks are inherently uncertain, requiring knowledge sharing and quick decision making that involves coordination across different levels and collaborators. While there has been an increasing interest among both researchers and practitioners in utilizing knowledge management to improve disaster management, little research has been reported about how to assess the dynamic nature of disaster management tasks, and what kinds of knowledge sharing are appropriate for different dimensions of task uncertainty characteristics. Using combinations of qualitative and quantitative methods, this research study developed the dimensions and their corresponding measures of the uncertain dynamic characteristics of disaster management tasks and tested the relationships between the various dimensions of uncertain dynamic disaster management tasks and task performance through the moderating and mediating effects of knowledge sharing. Furthermore, this research work conceptualized and assessed task uncertainty along three dimensions: novelty, unanalyzability, and significance; knowledge sharing along two dimensions: knowledge sharing purposes and knowledge sharing mechanisms; and task performance along two dimensions: task effectiveness and task efficiency. Analysis results of survey data collected from Miami-Dade County emergency managers suggested that knowledge sharing purposes and knowledge sharing mechanisms moderate and mediate uncertain dynamic disaster management task and task performance. Implications for research and practice as well directions for future research are discussed.

The Australian wine-making industry has undergone remarkable changes which have transformed it into a leading world innovator, producer and exporter of table wine. However, while Australia has been a leader in wine R&D, globalisation had led to the rapid proliferation and adoption of new technologies by new suppliers and wine-makers in various countries. To counter increasingly intense competition from emerging foreign suppliers, Australian wine-makers need to enhance their distinctiveness and innovation. One possible way for doing so involves knowledge sharing via electronic collaboration or e-collaboration. This paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge by developing an e-collaboration framework for the Australian wine-making industry. It focuses on how e-collaboration technologies are used for the purpose of innovation and knowledge sharing and how the Australian wine-making industry can benefit from it.; http://www.infotech.monash.edu.au/about/news/conferences/acis09/proceedings.html; Sally Rao Hill, Indrit Troshani and Robyn Davidson

Knowledge management (KM) is especially difficult to implement for project-based work. Tacit knowledge gained during projects diffuses when project teams disband and reform. Organizations are increasingly focusing on managing their knowledge flows, developing or investing in KM systems. Knowledge-sharing (KS) behaviors are the main input to KM systems, so we aim to optimize knowledge input to magnify the usefulness of KM systems. We adopt game-theoretic models to analyze workers' knowledge-sharing dynamics under different KM strategies, taking managers' viewpoints. We will solve Nash Equilibria by identifying associated conditions on each equilibrium path, and derive implications from these condition for KM strategies. We will explore: (1) types of knowledge that deserve sharing; (2) types of employees that possess different knowledge; (3) incentives that cause the right individuals to share useful knowledge; and (4) costs and benefits associated with alternative company KM strategies. We plan to validate these theoretical results via an empirical study. This paper lays out the problem, discusses the key points of departure, and presents our initial version of a game tree for employees' decisions about knowledge sharing. Interviews will subsequently be conducted to validate the game tree...

Purpose – The purpose of this study is twofold: to examine the types of activity that nurses undertake on an online community of practice (APN-l) as well as the types of knowledge that nurses share with one another; and to examine the factors that sustain knowledge sharing among the nurses from their local perspectives. Design/methodology/approach – An in-depth case study with mixed methods was adopted to obtain rich and naturalistic data including online observations of the messages posted in APN-l, interviews with 27 members of APN-l, and content analysis of online messages. Findings – The most common type of activity performed by members of APN-l was “Knowledge sharing,” followed by “Solicitation.” Regarding the types of knowledge shared, the most common were “Institutional practice” and “Personal opinion.” The factors that have helped sustain knowledge sharing within the online community of practice include: a self-selection; validation of one's practice with others who share a similar working situation; a need to gain better understanding of current knowledge and best practices in the field; a non-competitive environment; the asynchronous nature of the online communication medium; and the role of the listserv moderator. Originality/value – This study contributes to the growing knowledge base of communities of practice that span organizational boundary. Administrators can use the coding schema developed in this study to gauge current activities of existing online communities of practice. Additionally...

The knowledge initiative aims to expand knowledge sharing as a way of doing business-not a separate line of business. It also proposes, appropriately, a comprehensive strategy to bring about both internal and external changes. This evaluation examines the relevance of that strategy and the institutional infrastructure put in place to implement it. It also reviews the effectiveness of the strategy's three main areas of innovation: Network and Regional internal knowledgesharing activities among Bank staff; Regional and country external knowledge sharing with clients; The three Bank-supported global knowledge initiatives that have the broadest knowledge-sharing scope are: The Development Gateway, The Global Development Learning Network, and the Global Development Network. The transfer of knowledge and information has always been a dimension of the Bank's role. And clients, partners, and the international community at large have long seen the Bank as a main source of high-quality development analysis and expertise. The 1996 knowledge initiative raises the profile of this aspect of the Bank's role...

Despite the abundant literature in knowledge management, few empirical studies have explored knowledge management in connection with international assignees. This phenomenon has a special relevance in the Portuguese context, since (a) there are no empirical studies concerning this issue that involves international Portuguese companies; (b) the national business reality is incipient as far as internationalisation is concerned, and; (c) the organisational and national culture presents characteristics that are distinctive from the most highly studied contexts (e.g., Asia, USA, Scandinavian countries, Spain, France, The Netherlands, Germany, England and Russia). We examine the role of expatriates in transfer and knowledge sharing within the Portuguese companies with operations abroad. We focus specifically on expatriates’ role on knowledge sharing connected to international Portuguese companies and our findings take into account organizational representatives’ and expatriates’ perspectives. Using a comparative case study approach, we examine how three main dimensions influence the role of expatriates in knowledge sharing among headquarters and their subsidiaries (types of international assignment, reasons for using expatriation and international assignment characteristics). Data were collected using semi‐structured interviews to 30 Portuguese repatriates and 14 organizational representatives from seven Portuguese companies. The findings suggest that the reasons that lead Portuguese companies to expatriating employees are connected to: (1) business expansion needs; (2) control of international operations and; (3) transfer and knowledge sharing. Our study also shows that Portuguese companies use international assignments in order to positively respond to the increasingly decaying domestic market in the economic areas in which they operate. Evidence also reveals that expatriation is seen as a strategy to fulfill main organizational objectives through their expatriates (e.g....

Context: Software engineering is a knowledge intensive activity that is supported by documenting and sharing the required knowledge through a wide variety of artifacts. Global Software Development (GSD) teams heavily rely on artifacts as a vital means of knowledge sharing. However, there is little empirical knowledge about the key reasons and practices of using artifacts in GSD for knowledge sharing to support common understanding of technical specifications. Objective: This study aims at empirically studying the key motivators, practices, and drawbacks of artifact-based knowledge sharing for achieving common understanding of technical specifications in the context of GSD. Method: We conducted an exploratory case study in an organization that was involved in several GSD projects. Results: Our findings revealed the key challenges that necessitated the use of artifacts for sharing technical specification knowledge. We also present the practices that make up the artifact-based knowledge sharing system in the studied case. Finally, we shed some light on the caveats of knowledge sharing practices adopted by the studied company. The findings can provide useful insights into the artifact-based knowledge sharing practices and how it can be complemented by having certain level of social ties among distributed team members...

This study aims to analyze the strategies adopted by Communities of Practice (CoPs) in relation to the creation and sharing of knowledge.

The present investigation aims to analyse the relationship between knowledge sharing behaviours and performance. The former behaviours were studied using Social Network Analysis, in an attempt to characterise knowledge sharing networks. Through identification of central individuals in these networks, we made analysis of the association between this centrality and individual performance. A questionnaire was developed and applied to a sample of workers in a Portuguese organisation (N=244). The final conclusions point to a positive association between these behaviours and individual performance.
