Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease that has great influence on functional independence and quality of life, leading to reduced bone mass, microarchitectural deterioration, increased bone fragility, bone fractures with minimal trauma, decreased bone mineral density and decrease bone quality. This quality is defined by the bone health of it and is closely related to physical activity and body composition, genetic and hormonal factors and nutrition. Under normal conditions, bone mineral density evolves, increased up to 27 years, leveling up to 40. From here begins to decrease and there is a sharp decline in the menopausal stage and after it keeps a sharp downward trend. Thus we aim to evaluate the physical condition of postmenopausal osteoporotic women, assessing their functional status, different manifestations of strength and body composition. After approval by the Ethics Committee of the North Health Region, we identified women diagnosed with osteoporosis by dual-energy bone densitometry (DEXA), which showed inclusion criteria and who wanted to participate in the study of their own free will. After assessment of blood pressure and heart rate were subjected to: a) Demographic variables b) Quality of life evaluated with the osteoporosis assessment questionnaire (OPAQ) – 1 to 5 points represented by numeric scale from 1 to 5...

Knowledge is central to the modern economy and society. Indeed, the knowledge society has transformed the concept of knowledge and is more and more aware of the need to overcome the lack of knowledge when has to make options or address its problems and dilemmas. One`s knowledge is less based on exact facts and more on hypotheses, perceptions or indications. Even when we use new computational artefacts and novel methodologies for problem solving, like the use of Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS), the question of incomplete information is in most of the situations marginalized. On the other hand, common sense tells us that when a decision is made it is impossible to have a perception of all the information involved and the nature of its intrinsic quality. Therefore, something has to be made in terms of the information available and the process of its evaluation. It is under this framework that a Multi-valued Extended Logic Programming language will be used for knowledge representation and reasoning, leading to a model that embodies the Quality-of-Information (QoI) and its quantification, along the several stages of the decision making process. In this way it is possible to provide a measure of the value of the QoI that supports the decision itself. This model will be here presented in the context of a GDSS for VirtualECare...

Springer - Series Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing, vol. 79; In this work we intend to advance towards a computational model to hold up a Group Decision Support System for VirtualECare, a system aimed at sustaining online healthcare services, where Extended Logic Programs (ELP) will be used for knowledge re-presentation and reasoning. Under this scenario it is possible to evaluate the ELPs making in terms of the Quality-of-Information (QoI) that is assigned to them, along the several stages of the decision making process, which is given as a truth value in the interval 0…1, i.e., it is possible to provide a measure of the value of the QoI that supports the decision making process, an end in itself. It will be also considered the problem ofQoI evaluation in a multi-criteria decision setting, being the criteria to be fulfilled that of a Clinical Guideline (CG) for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Springer - Series Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing, vol. 73; In Group Decision Making based on argumentation, decisions are made considering the diverse points of view of the different partakers in order to decide which course of action a group should follow. However, knowledge and belief are normally incomplete, contradictory, or error sensitive, being desirable to use formal tools to deal with the problems that arise from the use of uncertain and even not precise information. On the other hand, qualitative models and qualitative reasoning have been around in Artificial Intelligence research for some time, in particular due the growing need to offer support in decision-making processes, a problem that in this work will be addressed in terms of an extension to the logic programming language and based on an evaluation of the Quality-of-Information (QoI) that stems out from those extended logic programs or theories. We present a computational model to address the problem of decision making, in terms of a multitude of scenarios, also defined as logic programs or theories, where the more appropriate ones stand for the higher QoIs values.

Knowledge representation techniques as a way to describe the real world, based on mechanical, logical or other means, will be, always, a function of the systems ability to describe the existing world. Knowledge and belief are generally incomplete, contradictory, or error sensitive, being desirable to use formal tools to deal with the problems that arise from the use of incomplete, contradictory, ambiguous, imperfect, or missing information. It is important to evaluate the quality-of-information of the knowledge around the time in order to analyze the best conditions of the universe of the discourse. Based on the vinification process of the wine production this paper analyzes the quality-of-information in the various stages of the process applying Extended Logic Programming as logic mathematical functions.

The Research Project “Costs and Benefits of urban dispersion on a local scale” aims to compare costs and benefits of different forms of land use in two urban areas in Portugal: Aveiro and Évora. Concerning the costs, it will look at public infrastructure and mobility, while the benefits will be assumed and assessed as Quality of Life (QoL). We expect that such data, expressed in monetary terms, will provide new input for the decision-making process in urban planning and design, contemplating objective data, as well as different perceptions and valuations of urban contexts. This paper will briefly go through the Project’s purposes, emphasising those specific to the task on the definition and the assessment of QoL. Methodologically this task has three main steps: i) to provide background information on the multidimensionality of the QoL concept and its operationalization (problems and difficulties); ii) to develop a new concept of QoL at the local level (to identify the main attributes that explain the QoL in different settlement types - dispersed and continuous); iii) to develop, conceptually, a methodology to measure QoL on a local scale. A final note is due to state that no results will be presented, only methodological developments achieved so far.

This work investigates the teaching of television (TV) journalism in the state of Goiás, from the analysis of the course structure in four private faculties and also in that employed in the Faculty of Communication and Library at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG, Goiânia GO). This is a pioneering research work because there is no published related work focusing upon the context of the state of Goiás. The motivation for this work is based on the fact that TV journalism is considered to be an extreme powerful means of communication in the information society. TV journalism acts in harmony with other subsystems in the development of a social reality , hence it can be seen as an ally in the search for citizenship and a democratic society. In our study we verified whether these educational institutions are educating TV journalists capable of producing high quality information, which enables viewers to exercise their citizenship. In order to do this, the teaching course projects (i.e., the curriculum and curse plans of TV journalism courses) were analyzed through their consistency, scope and effectiveness in the educational process of these professionals. The adopted methodology allowed for relevant discussions and conclusions regarding the quality of information produced by the TV journalist with regard to the citizenship issue...

peer-reviewed; Background: Internationally, generic medicines are increasingly seen as a key strategy to reduce healthcare expenditure, therefore awareness and knowledge transfer regarding generic medicines are valid areas of research. Although the Internet is a frequently used source of medical information, the accuracy of material found online is variable. The aim of this study was to evaluate information provided on the Internet regarding generic medicines in terms of quality of information and readability. Methods: Internet searches for information regarding generic medicine were completed, with a pre-defined search term, using the Google search engine, in five English-speaking geographical regions (US, UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia). Search results likely to be looked at by a searcher were collated and assessed for the quality of generic medicine-related information in the websites, using a novel customised Website Quality Assessment (WQA) tool; and for readability, using existing methods. The reproducibility of the tools between two independent reviewers was evaluated and correlations between WQA score, readability statistics and Google search engine results page ranking were assessed. Results: Wikipedia was the highest-ranking search result in 100% of searches performed. Considerable variability of search results returned between different geographical regions was observed...

Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, Information Science, 2011; Communally created Web 2.0 content on the Internet has begun to compete with information provided by traditional gatekeeper institutions, such as academic journals, medical professionals, and large corporations. On the one hand, such gatekeepers need to understand the nature of this competition, as well as to try to ensure that the general public are not endangered by poor quality information. On the other hand, advocates of free and universal access to basic social services have argued that communal efforts can provide as good or better-quality versions of commonly needed resources. This dissertation arises from these needs to understand the nature and quality of information being produced on such websites. Website-oriented information quality (IQ) literature spans at least 15 different academic fields, a survey of which identified two types of IQ: perceptual and artifactual fitness-related, and representational accuracy and completeness-related. The current project studied websites in terms of all of these, except perceptual fitness. This study may be the only of its kind to have targeted fansites: websites made by fans of a mass media franchise. Despite the Internet's becoming a primary means by which millions of people consume and co-produce their entertainment...

We propose a quality of service (QoS) monitoring program for broadband access to measure the impact of proprietary network spaces. Our paper surveys other QoS policy initiatives, including those in the airline, and wireless and wireline telephone industries, to situate broadband in the context of other markets undergoing regulatory devolution. We illustrate how network architecture can create impediments to open communications, and how QoS monitoring can detect such effects. We present data from a field test of QoS-monitoring software now in development. We suggest QoS metrics to gauge whether information "walled gardens" represent a real threat for dividing the Internet into proprietary spaces. To demonstrate our proposal, we are placing our software on the computers of a sample of broadband subscribers. The software periodically conducts a battery of tests that assess the quality of connections from the subscriber's computer to various content sites. Any systematic differences in connection quality between affiliated and non-affiliated content sites would warrant research into the behavioral implications of those differences. If, however, the data shows that there are no chronic biases in connection quality, then it would be fair to conclude that the walls on the garden are low enough not to be detrimental to public communications. QoS monitoring is timely because the potential for the Internet to break into a loose network of proprietary content domains appears stronger than ever. Recent court rulings and policy statements suggest a growing trend towards relaxed scrutiny of mergers and the easing or elimination of content ownership rules. This policy environment could lead to a market with a small number of large...

As the Internet continues to penetrate consumer households, online marketing is getting increasingly important for firms. By adapting to online strategies, firms are blessed (or doomed) with a plethora of new business models. The information flows created in the process poses both opportunities and challenges for marketers. On one hand, information flows captured online are usually easier to be stored and processed, thus empowering firms to be better informed about the consumers or the market itself. On the other hand, how to use the information flows to make the correct managerial decisions is still a challenging task for managers and academics alike. My dissertation studies the marketing implications of these information flows. Broad as the research question is, my dissertation focuses on specific market settings. I adopt both analytical and empirical methodologies to study information flows in these markets. Overall, this dissertation concludes that information flows can engender new market mechanisms, can provide valuable information of unobservable market forces, and can be created to improve social welfare. Essay 1: Innovation Incentives for Information Goods. Digital goods can be reproduced costlessly.; (cont.) Thus a price of zero would be economically-efficient for consumers. However...

Currently, a broader set of stakeholders justifies the growing importance of social andenvironmental disclosure for accountability purposes. However, the quality of information onSustainability Reports (SR) has been questioned. This study uses content analysis toinvestigate the accuracy of economic indicators (EC1 to EC9) of Global Reporting Initiative(GRI) standard in the SR in comparison with the information in the financial reports. Thesample consists of the Sustainability Reports of 23 companies in the Brazilian power sector, which were published in 2011. The results show that the degree of accuracy is medium or lowfor all companies, suggesting flaws in the preparation of economic data from the SR, forwhich companies would be supposedly well prepared, as the accounting systems of thecompanies contain most of the information necessary especially to meet the Value AddedStatement (VAS), the CPC 33 Employee Benefits and CPC 07 Government Subsidies andAssistance.; Actualmente, un conjunto más amplio de stakeholders justifica la creciente importancia de ladivulgación socio ambiental para efecto de accountability.
