The aim of this article is to reflect on the personal and intellectual biography of the geologist and prehistorian Abbot Hugo Obermaier (1877-1946), appointed as the first professor of Geology applied to Prehistory at the IPH in 1911. Obermaier’s work was crucial for the early development of the Parisian institution. In particular, he directed the excavation of the Palaeolithic site of El Castillo (Spain) until 1914, when the outbreak of the First World War brought his professional engagement with the IPH to an end. From then on, Obermaier pursued his scientific career in Spain, and he became the first professor of Primitive History of Man at the University of Madrid in 1922. Thanks to his capacity to cross borders (whether geographical, linguistic or disciplinary) and his vast scholarly network, he played a critical role in international research. His working life coincides with the half a century in which prehistorians constructed the disciplinary identity of their field, affirmed their academic status and developed the scientific practices that define it to this day; Obermaier was a key actor in this process. Looking at the different layers of his scientific biography allows us to tackle several broader issues, such as for instance...

Net neutrality in Australia : an emerging debate

Australia has been somewhat late to the debate on net neutrality: it is only just emerging now as a major issue in public discourse, and there are no plans to introduce any kind of further legislation or regulation beyond the existing regimes. This contribution will analyse the status of net neutrality in Australia, looking at this incipient debate, the current law and regulation which may affect ISPs’ conduct, and directions for reform if the status quo does not go far enough to advance Internet users’ interests.

(Published version of EUI PhD thesis, 1990.); Focusing on Serlio, this monograph examines Italian Renaissance theory of architecture as related to rhetoric. Serlio's treatise is composed exactly like Giulio Camillo Delminio's Teatro della memoria. Building in stone is thus analogous to quoting from Antiquity.

Cultures of Communication: New Historical Perspectives

MCMAHON, Richard

Português
This contribution locates the current collection of papers by young European historians in the historical context of historical and social scientific study of culture, and especially the historical turn, which reconciles poststructuralist culture scholarship with older concerns of cultural history. The contributors are all influenced by linguistic turn deconstruction of discourse, studying culture and identity as systems of shared meaning, which are highly unstable, heavily gendered and susceptible to renegotiation, reinterpretation and political instrumentalisation. Authors problematise and undermine the essentialist, nationalist, conservative, functionalist model of timeless, separate, coherent territorial cultures. They discuss competing and contested criteria for defining nations or describe cultural communication between ideological or social groups within national societies. Most also engage intensely with power differences, including Foucault's 'microphysics' of subtle and complex power-knowledge interrelationships, examining state cultural policies or how individuals or weaker groups transform, appropriate or reject hegemonic state or intellectual discourses. However eclectic history's theoretical borrowing, focus on contingent...

On the Margins of International Science and National Discourse: National Identity Narratives in Romanian Race Anthropology

MCMAHON, Richard

This article examines the local reception and manipulation of ideas at the edge of an international cultural network. Poorly institutionalised interwar Romanian race anthropology was a weak voice in both the formulation of domestic nationalist discourse and in internationally centralised scientific race classification. The author discusses how its scientific methodologies, models, institutional links and citation practices, and the national identity and origin narratives it proposed, reveal an imaginative, but never entirely satisfactory negotiation between interacting cultural worlds of local nationalist tradition and international science, and powerful competing traditions within both. While nineteenth-century French influence helped entrench ideas of national racial synthesis deeply in Romanian nationalist tradition, fin-de-siecle German influence promoted a hypernationalist concentration on ultra-native Dacian ancestors. Romanian race scientists creatively mixed French-style syntheses, sometimes even importing France's ethnic Celts, with the ethno-racial purity obsession and Nordic supremacism of the new, scientifically prestigious interwar German raciology. The latter was particularly strong in the newly acquired, formerly Hapsburg province of Transylvania...
