In this paper, we propose an item recommendation algorithm based on latent factors which uses implicit feedback from users to optimize the ranking of items according to individual preferences. The novelty of the algorithm is the integration of content metadata to improve the quality of recommendations. Such descriptions are an important source to construct a personalized set of items which are meaningfully related to the user’s main interests. The method is evaluated on two diferente datasets, being compared against another approach reported in the literature. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of supporting personalized ranking with metadata awareness.; CAPES; CNPq; FAPESP (grant #2013/22547-1 and #2012/13830-9)

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES); Pós-graduação em Ciência da Informação - FFC; Nowadays our society, named society of information, has been characterized by the valorization of information through the increasing use of the information and communication technologies and the exponential growth of the informational resources, available in various environments, mainly on the Web. This reality has brought some changes for the automated access to information. If we have a big amount of informational resources available at one side, on the other we have problems related to search, localization, access and recuperation of this information in digital environments as a consequence. In this context, the problem that originated this research is related to the difficulty on searching and recuperating digital informational resources on the Web, and the lack of adequate treatment for the informational representation of these resources. At the moment, the biggest challenge for the scientific community is to identify patterns and methods of representation of information, that is, the construction of forms of representation of the informational resource in order to provide its search and recuperation in a more efficient manner. So...

The UNESP Institutional Repository was started in 2013 and, for its implementation, it was populated with data harvested automatically from three distinct sources (Web of Science, SciELO and Scopus). The University of Porto has a well-established set of specialized libraries serving theresearch and student population of its 14 schools. Thematic digital libraries can be valuable fororganizing specific collections and for supporting emergent communities. This work focuses ontwo case studies, one in the area of the Fine Arts and the other in the area of Food andNutrition. For building both digital libraries we propose to use the existing university repositoryinfrastructure and to establish a metadata workflow that makes use of available descriptions inthe library catalogues and in the university information system. We expect that such anapproach, which takes into account the institutional context and resources, can be used in othercollections at our university and inspire similar initiatives elsewhere.; The University of Porto has a well-established set of specialized libraries serving theresearch and student population of its 14 schools. In the last few years, the University of Aveiro, Portugal, has been offering several distance learning courses over the Web, using e learning platforms. Experience showed that different editions of a same course, using the same contents and structure, and having similar target learners, had different success rates. What would be the reason for that? A hypothesis was considered: The level of success could be directly related with the remote follow up of the learners’ participation in the courses; the best results usually occur when the follow-up is closer. The existing e-learning platforms offer and the standardization works being developed by organizations and consortiums like IMS (IMS Global Learning Consortium, Inc), ADL SCORM (Advanced Distributed Learning Sherable Content Object Reference Model), IEEE LTSC LOM (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Learning Technologies Standard Committee Learning Object Metadata), ARIADNE (ARIADNE Foundation for the European Knowledge Pool), AICC CMI (Aviation Industry CBT Committee Computer Managed Instruction), etc, don’t cover the course monitorization concerns mentioned. Those projects were focused on aspects like contents and its delivery in the context of the execution of the courses’ activities. This is even true in the SCORM project that doesn’t include any reference to the management of the e-learning processes. Recently...

The constant scientific production in the universities and in the research centers makes these organizations produce and acquire a great amount of data in a short period of time. Due to the big quantity of data, the research organizations become potentially vulnerable to the impacts on information booms that may cause a chaos as far as information management is concerned. In this context, the development of data catalogues comes up as one possible solution to the problems such as (I) the organization and (II) the data management. In the scientific scope, the data catalogues are implemented with the standard for digital and geospatial metadata and are broadly utilized in the process of producing a catalogue of scientific information. The aim of this work is to present the characteristics of access and storage of metadata in databank systems in order to improve the description and dissemination of scientific data. Relevant aspects will be considered and they should be analyzed during the stage of planning, once they can determine the success of implementation. The use of data catalogues by research organizations may be a way to promote and facilitate the dissemination of scientific data, avoid the repetition of efforts while being executed...

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a large and comprehensive health survey utilizing leading edge technologies to produce national estimates of health measures and the nutritional status of the U.S. population. Early NHANES metadata models grouped data by categories with little specificity and often not capturing the complexity of the survey. Subsequently, existing models at the Census Bureau, CDC, and the EPA were evaluated in addition to industry standards, such as DDI, Dublin Core, and ISO 1179. For the NHANES metadata model, the DDI standard and CDC Public Health Conceptual Model were chosen as the backbone for constructing the data model. The new model has led to increased data accuracy and several value-added products for producing codebooks, automatically checking questionnaire skip patterns, and producing questionnaire instrumentation.

This is the final version of the article. It first appeared from Cogitatio Press via http://dx.doi.org/10.17645/mac.v3i2.297; Legal frameworks exist within democracies to prevent the misuse and abuse of personal data that law enforcement authorities obtain from private communication service providers. The fundamental rights to respect for private life and the protection of personal data underpin this framework within the European Union. Accordingly, the protection of the principles and safeguards required by these rights is key to ensuring that the oversight of State surveillance powers is robust and transparent. Furthermore, without the robust scrutiny of independent judicial review, the principles and safeguards guaranteed by these rights may become more illusory than real. Following the Edward Snowden revelations, major concerns have been raised worldwide regarding the legality, necessity and proportionality standards governing these laws. In 2014, the highest court in the EU struck down the legal framework that imposed a mandatory duty on communication service providers to undertake the mass retention of metadata for secret intelligence and law enforcement authorities across the EU. This article considers the influence of the Snowden revelations on this landmark judgment. Subsequently...

This may involve the integration of clinical data sets from several different sources: these data sets may employ different data definitions and some may be incomplete. Methods In this work we employ semantic web techniques developed within the CancerGrid project, in particular the use of metadata elements and logic-based inference to annotate heterogeneous clinical information, integrate and query it. Results We show how this integration can be achieved automatically...

To enable others to correctly interpret the complex data sets that result, and the conclusions drawn, it is necessary to provide contextualizing experimental metadata at an appropriate level of granularity. Standards initiatives normally cater to particular domains. However, several synergistic standards activities foster cross-domain harmonization of the three kinds of reporting standard (minimum information checklists, ontologies and file formats). Presented at the CRIS2012 Conference in Prague.-- 8 pages.-- Full conference programme available at: http://www.cris2012.org/findByFilter.do?categoryId=1158; The JISC funded IRIOS (Integrated Research Input and Output System) project developed a demonstrator integrating research information input (projects) and output (publications) datasets allowing data to be linked and exported in CERIF format. C4D (CERIF for Datasets), extends this platform to manage research datasets as outputs from research projects. Although research datasets vary and are extremely independent, they have some commonality that can be recorded in CERIF. C4D will ‘CERIFy’ existing research dataset metadata conventions, and provide access to research data in an environment which holds information on research projects and other more conventional research outputs. C4D will also explore the commonality of research dataset metadata, how much of this can be represented in CERIF and explore the possibility of implementing this in a cloud environment. C4D will use live datasets from three UK universities to test the process of ‘CERIFying’ dataset metadata.

Delivered at the CRIS2014 Conference in Rome; published in Procedia Computer Science 33 (Jul 2014).; Contains conference paper (6 pages) and presentation (16 slides).; We present our experience to implement a Current Research Information System in the Astrakhan State University, Russia. The CRIS covers research information such as publications, funding, projects, and patents. Education, training, professional activity, and expertise are also within the scope of the CRIS. The metadata of research output are stored as a single record, regardless of the number of contributors and their belonging to different divisions. Data linkage associates a research output with contributors and their departments. A faculty fills own profile and links the metadata with co-authors. The more active and responsible users employ the CRIS, the more complete and reliable is information. Some metadata are imported from external data sources, in particular from Russian Science Citation Index. CRIS can generate Statistical Reports, CV’s, Publication Lists, ratings, etc. When implementing the system the main problems are not technical but organizational. The bureaucratic obstacles hinder the exchange of information between different sources. The managerial staff does not demonstrate the real interest in getting actual...

Abstract The information technology has been making possible the development of applications and methodologies of material descriptive treatment, as it is the case of the metadata standards, allowing new practical approaches for the organization of the information, mainly in electronic means. The adoption of metadata standard propitiates the interoperability between applications and sharing of data among systems. Based on that presupposition...
