We present an interface for metadata access on the Grid, designed to support flexible schema management, efficient retrieval of large result sets and to allow a broad range of implementations. We also describe an implementation of this interface, which supports a wide range of storage back-ends and two access protocols: SOAP and a TCP-streaming-based protocol. This interface and implementation have been selected as the official metadata components of the gLite-EGEE middleware. Finally, we present the results of extensive performance studies, where the two front-ends are compared to evaluate the cost of using SOAP as metadata access protocol.; http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TJM-4HRDX94-8/1/b801bfbc291fe7dad0af0e169eb4ec3b

In this paper, we analyze the application of ensemble algorithms to improve the ranking recommendation problem with multiple metadata. We propose three generic ensemble strategies that do not require modification of the recommender algorithm. They combine predictions from a recommender trained with distinct metadata into a unified rank of recommended items. The proposed strategies are Most Pleasure, Best of All and Genetic Algorithm Weighting. The evaluation using the HetRec 2011 MovieLens 2k dataset with five different metadata (genres, tags, directors, actors and countries) shows that our proposed ensemble algorithms achieve a considerable 7% improvement in the Mean Average Precision even with state-of-art collaborative filtering algorithms.

Nowadays, the popularity of the Web encourages the development of Hypermedia Systems dedicated to e-learning. Nevertheless, most of the available Web teaching systems apply the traditional paper-based learning resources presented as HTML pages making no use of the new capabilities provided by the Web. There is a challenge to develop educative systems that adapt the educative content to the style of learning, context and background of each student. Another research issue is the capacity to interoperate on the Web reusing learning objects. This work presents an approach to address these two issues by using the technologies of the Semantic Web. The approach presented here models the knowledge of the educative content and the learner’s profile with ontologies whose vocabularies are a refinement of those defined on standards situated on the Web as reference points to provide semantics. Ontologies enable the representation of metadata concerning simple learning objects and the rules that define the way that they can feasibly be assembled to configure more complex ones. These complex learning objects could be created dynamically according to the learners’ profile by intelligent agents that use the ontologies as the source of their beliefs. Interoperability issues were addressed by using an application profile of the IEEE LOM- Learning Object Metadata standard.; Atualmente a popularidade da Web incentiva o desenvolvimento de sistemas hipermídia dedicados ao ensino a distância. Não obstante a maior parte destes sistemas usa os mesmos recursos do ensino tradicional...

This paper examines and proposes a set of metadata elements for describing digital news articles for the benefit of distributed and heterogeneous news resource discovery. Existing digital news description standards such as NITF and NewsML are analysed and compared with Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES), which results in that the use of Dublin Core is encouraged for interoperability of the resources. The suggested metadata elements are carefully selected and defined considering the characteristics of news articles. Some elements are detailed with refinement qualifiers and recommended encoding scheme. This set of metadata has been developed as a part of the tasks in the IST (Information Society Technologies)-funded European project OmniPaper (Smart Access to European Newspapers, IST-2001-32174).

Information Society Technologies (IST) funded OmniPaper project investigates efficient ways for access to distributed and heterogeneous digital news archives using state-of-the-art technologies such as RDF, XTM and SOAP. An approach taken is to create small prototypes based on each of them. This paper presents the first stage of the prototype development, particularly of RDF approach, including analysis on existing news text format standards and metadata vocabularies, definition of metadata elements for OmniPaper, implementation of application profile and RDF schema and development of the RDF prototype in a web-based RDF specific application. The elaborated analysis shows that Dublin Core Metadata Element Set has to be a principal vocabulary to implement the OmniPaper application profile as it provides greater interoperability. The RDF prototype provides RDF “metadatabase” with searchable interface for simple and advance search on the defined metadata elements.

Folksonomy is the result of describing Web resources with tags created by Web users. Although it has become a rich basis for the description of resources, in general terms it is not being conveniently integrated in metadata. However, if the appropriate metadata elements are identified, then further work may be done in order to automatically assign tags to these elements (RDF properties) and use them in Semantic Web applications. This article presents research carried out to continue the project Kinds of Tags, which intends to identify elements required for metadata originating from folksonomies and to propose an application profile for DC Social Tagging. It will provide information that may be used by software applications to assign tags to metadata elements and, therefore, means for tags to be conveniently gathered by metadata interoperability tools. Despite the unquestionably high value of DC and the significance of the already existing properties in DC Terms, the pilot study show revealed a significant number of tags for which no corresponding properties yet existed. A need for new properties, such as Action, Depth, Rate, and Utility was determined. Those potential new properties will have to be validated in a later stage by the DC Social Tagging Community.

The general goal of this research was to verify which metadata elements of music information representation are relevant for its retrieval from the perspective of expert music users. Based on a bibliographical research, a comprehensive metadata set of music information representation was developed and transformed into a questionnaire for data collection, which was applied to students and professors of the Graduate Program in Music at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The results show that the most relevant information for expert music users is related to identification and authorship responsibilities. The respondents from Composition and Interpretative Practice areas agree with these results, while the respondents from Musicology/Ethnomusicology and Music Education areas also consider the metadata related to the historical context of composition relevant.

Automating semantic matching of attributes for the purpose of information integration is challenging, and the dynamics of the Web further exacerbate this problem. Believing that many facets of metadata can contribute to a resolution, we present a framework for multifaceted exploitation of metadata in which we gather information about potential matches from various facets of metadata and combine this information to generate and place confidence values on potential attribute matches. To make the framework apply in the highly dynamic Web environment, we base our process on machine learning when sufficient applicable data is available and base it otherwise on empirically observed rules. Experiments we have conducted are encouraging, showing that when the combination of facets converges as expected, the results are highly reliable.

Nowadays, producers of geospatial data in either raster or vector formats are able to make them available on the World Wide Web by deploying web services that enable users to access and query on those contents even without specific software for geoprocessing. Several providers around the world have deployed instances of WMS (Web Map Service), WFS (Web Feature Service) and WCS (Web Coverage Service), all of them specified by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). In consequence, metadata about the available contents can be retrieved to be compared with similar offline datasets from other sources. This paper presents a brief summary and describes the matching process between the specifications for OGC web services (WMS, WFS and WCS) and the specifications for metadata required by the ISO 19115 - adopted as reference for several national metadata profiles, including the Brazilian one. This process focuses on retrieving metadata about the identification and data quality packages as well as indicates the directions to retrieve metadata related to other packages. Therefore, users are able to assess whether the provided contents fit to their purposes.

Digital libraries of scientific articles describe them using a set of metadata, including bibliographic references. These references can be represented by several formats and styles. Considerable content variations can occur in some metadata fields such as title, author names and publication venue. Besides, it is quite common to find references that omit same metadata fields such as page numbers. Duplicate entries influence the quality of digital library services once they need to be appropriately identified and treated. This paper presents a comparative analysis among different data classification algorithms used to identify duplicated bibliographic metadata records. We have investigated the discovered patterns by comparing the rules and the decision tree with the heuristics adopted in a previous work. Our experiments show that the combination of specific-purpose similarity functions previously proposed and classification algorithms represent an improvement up to 12% when compared to the experiments using our original approach.

The eXtensible Catalog (XC) is a unique set of software toolkits for libraries that is not directly comparable to either a traditional Integrated Library System (ILS) or a “next-generation” discovery interface. XC will go well beyond providing a discovery layer to also provide a metadata infrastructure for enriching and transforming metadata to make it usable in a variety of web environments. The XC Metadata Services Toolkit can also be used for experimentation and testing of new metadata standards and schemas and can be an invaluable tool for libraries as they become accustomed to these new standards, especially RDA. The library metadata environment is entering a period that will be characterized by significant change and uncertainty, and the eXtensible Catalog Project will provide a variety of useful tools to help the library community make informed decisions about the future.

Metadata creations tools are in general surprisingly hard to use, often lacking basic features such as auto-complete, spell-check, and data validation. In addition, there is little research on how they could be made better and more efficient. The ideal metadata creation tool would make it easy to create robust, consistent metadata, and difficult to make a mistake. This presentation will examine research on data entry interfaces, look at the state of the art in metadata creation tools, and demonstrate some features that make metadata creation tools work well.

Visualizing operations environments in three dimensions (3D) supports the warfighters' ability to make rapid, well-informed decisions by presenting complex systems in a naturalistic, integrated display format. Unfortunately, constructing these environments is a time-consuming task requiring specific expertise not typically available in the command center. The future use of 3D visualization in military operations depends on the ability of personnel with minimal graphics experience to create virtual environments quickly and accurately by leveraging data-driven customization of content from model archives with the data available in the command center. Practical 3D visualization depends on standardized scene autogeneration. The Extensible 3D (X3D) Graphics family of specifications is approved by the International Standards Organization (ISO) as the Web-based format for the interchange and rendering of 3D scenes. Previous work has demonstrated that an archive of X3D scenes, such as the Scenario Authoring and Visualization for Advanced Graphical Environments (SAVAGE) library, can be used to autogenerate sophisticated 3D tactical environments. Assembling and making sense of the data necessary to autogenerate a 3D environment requires context and good documentation...

An essential capability of the Virtual Observatory is a means for describing what data and computational facilities are available where, and once identified, how to use them. The data themselves have associated metadata (e.g., FITS keywords), and similarly we require metadata about data collections and data services so that VO users can easily find information of interest. Furthermore, such metadata are needed in order to manage distributed queries efficiently; if a user is interested in finding x-ray images there is no point in querying the HST archive, for example. In this document we suggest an architecture for resource and service metadata and describe the relationship of this architecture to emerging Web Services standards. We also define an initial set of metadata concepts.

Presented at the CRIS2012 Conference in Prague, Session "Datasets in Research Information Systems".-- 13 pages.-- Contains: Conference paper (PDF) + presentation.; This paper describes an approach for representing and handling metadata about Public Sector Information data sets in a large scale data infrastructure as designed within ENGAGE, a project of the FP7 Research Infrastructures programme. A multi-level approach is adopted, allowing management of metadata at various levels of expressive power, and thus enabling different use cases and requirements to be served through a single platform. CERIF is being investigated as a common conceptual model to ensure information integration from diverse sources without loss of meaning and furthermore as the basis for the generation of Linked Open Data. Through detailed mappings from common metadata schemata used for PSI it is shown that CERIF is a data model suitable for representing rich contextual metadata for the domain of governmental datasets.
