(cont.) payoff IT investments. When the North American Aerospace Industry invests less than any other industry in the high risk investments, its foreign counterpart invests more than any other industry. The second major finding is that the governance mechanisms in place are similar in the two Aerospace Industry segments, contrary to the IT Portfolios. IT decisions are made usually by IT executives or business executives, based on the information provided by Chief level executives and at least one other business group. Finally, the third major finding is that the Aerospace Industry gets above average returns from IT by being good at IT Business Planning, Top Management involvement and User Satisfaction. However, a major effort needs to be placed on improving user satisfaction as it is not always properly managed and hinders returns from IT. The lack of extensive communication also hinders the returns from IT by not guarantying top management involvement and awareness of the IT governance mechanisms.; This thesis originated by a need for the Lean Aerospace Industry to study in the Aerospace Industry what seems to be a troublesome domain for many other industries: Information Technologies (IT). Beforehand, there were two ways to do so: study how aerospace companies implement major systems like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Product Data Management (PDM). After a few short case studies...

Automated computer technologies utilizing e-mail or SMS text messaging reminders can help overcome adherence barriers to optimal glycemic control in patients with diabetes. Text messaging on cellular phones, in particular, has become a popular communications tool among adolescents and young adults. We have created an automated computer system that provides reminders to check blood sugars by e-mail or text messaging on a cellular phone. The reminder schedule is set on a password-protected web site by the user according to his or her preferences. Users can respond to the reminders with their blood sugars, which are time and date stamped and then stored in a database. Text parsing rules allow users to override the time and date and to attach a comment as well. The blood sugar log can later be viewed and edited on the web site. Positive feedback is provided for every blood sugar entered and users also have the option to have both general and diabetes facts sent to them daily at random times via e-mail or text messaging. A randomized, controlled trial comparing e-mail with text messaging is underway at the time of this writing to test the feasibility and utility of this system in patients with diabetes. Preliminary results from 10 users (mean age 18.9 [plus-minus] 2.0 years) indicate that the system appeals to a subset of the study population. Two of the ten subjects have been using the system consistently...

The rapid growth of Internet traffic has made Internet Service Providers (ISP) struggle to upgrade network capacity and to maintain service quality. The increase in the broadband usage impacts the cost of an ISP through usage-associated costs such as incremental usage cost, cost for expanding the network capacity, and cost from subscriber churns. This paper attempts to understand the relation between broadband usage and incremental usage cost. This thesis addresses issues on connecting the broadband usage to the usage-sensitive costs. How much do the light users spend to support the heavy users by paying the equal usage fee? To answer the question, it should be investigated how much incremental cost is generated by using networks and how the traffic load is distributed over the users. The research is based on the commercial broadband usage data sample and the published financial statements from a major broadband service provider in Korea, Korea Telecom. Analyzing the broadband usage reveals to us what the usage distribution looks like and how the distribution evolves over time.; (cont.) By examining the published financial data, the cost directly associated with the broadband usage is estimated. The usage distribution and the estimated cost is incorporated to find an answer to how much burden the light users are carrying to subsidize the heavy users on the network under the current flat usage fee system.; by Jungwon Min.; Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

Companies in the computer hardware industry can benefit by incorporating future business scenarios in their present decision-making processes. Any decision regarding strategic supply chain design is one such area where long-range planning can especially help. This is primarily because investments in new supply chains have a long return period, which also influence the chances of future success of a company. However, developing such long-range views of the whole industry is a challenging task, because of inherent uncertainties of the future and rapid changes in the computer industry itself. This paper takes a step towards achieving this goal by introducing several frameworks for the development of future scenarios and their analysis.; by Shaunak Roy.; Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, Technology and Policy Program; and, (M. Revenue Management (RM) is the process of managing the sales of perishable assets by controlling price and inventory so as to maximize profit. It was developed in the late 1970s after the deregulation of the US airline industry, and has enabled the US airline industry to increase its revenue by offering dynamic prices associated with demand. Many academic articles have understandably focused on applications to the airline industry. This thesis deals with the application of RM to the railway industry. The railway is considered the most energy-efficient mode of transportation, and its role has become increasingly important around the world with ever growing concerns about the global energy crisis and climate change. Implementing an RM strategy for railways is expected to contribute to a significant lessening of this environmental burden by making better use of the existing railway infrastructure. Furthermore, it is not only advantageous for the railway operators, but also for the passengers who can benefit from discounted tickets. In fact, several countries have already introduced RM to their railway systems. However, the results have not always turned out as desired and the goals set out by the policy makers have not always been achieved.; (cont.) Most research looking at the issue of how RM should be applied to the railway industry has employed a quantitative approach. While the development of mathematical models is clearly valuable...

While large scale diffusion of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) is widely anticipated, the mechanisms that determine their success or failure are ill understood. Analysis of an AFV transition model developed at MIT has revealed that AFV diffusion dynamics are particularly sensitive to consumer consideration as influenced by social exposure to AFVs. While some empirical research in this area exists, uncertainty regarding these social exposure parameters remains high. Following principles of partial model testing, this research examines social exposure parameters, with a focus on empirical accounts of diffusion involving diesel passenger vehicles in Europe. The research uses the historical data of diesel sales in six European countries. To complete diffusion datasets the research generates synthetic data in early stages of diffusion. The results from the calibrations yield parameters that are in line with other marketing studies. These findings help reduce uncertainty regarding social exposure parameters in the automotive industry. Further, bootstrapping confidence intervals are conducted to test the reliability of the parameter estimate. Challenges and avenues about building confidence in parameter estimate and data analysis are discussed.; by Qi Zhang.; Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology...

Hard drive industry is facing scaling challenge for areal density to be further increased. This is due to the triangular conflictions among thermal stability (superparamagnetic effect), single-to-noise ratio and writability of the recording media. One of the most promising methods to overcome this constraint is the patterned magnetic media technology. Although it is facing many challenges, the large potential gains in density offered by patterned media make it one of the possible milestones on the horizon for future of the disk drives industry. One of the biggest challenges for patterned media is to realize its mass fabrication provided reduced cost per bit. The basic fabrication approach is to use lithography to pattern the magnetic materials on the platter. However, patterned media requires well-ordered nanoarrays with dimensions less than 25 nm, which challenges the state-of-art lithography technologies. This M. Eng. project focuses on evaluations of the technologies and fabrication schemes potential for patterned media from various aspects like technical barriers, cost and intellectual properties. Technologies including E-beam lithography, nanoimprint lithography, templated diblock copolymer self-assembly and self-assembled magnetic nanoparticles are discussed. Cost modeling was done to prove the enormous gain in revenue for the proposed fabrication scheme. It is proposed that the fabrication scheme of templated diblock copolymer for making the master stamp for nanoimprint followed by nanoimprint lithography for mass production has the largest potential for patterned media. However...

(cont.) In the case of a classical linear sea-level rise of one meter per century, the use of DIVA generally decreases the protection fraction of the coastline, and results in a smaller protection cost because of high spatial concentration of capital. As in past studies, wetland loss continues to be dominant for most regions, and the total cost does not decline appreciably where wetland loss remains about the same. The total cost for the United States is about $320 billion (in 1995 U.S. dollars), an estimate comparable with other studies. Nevertheless, capital loss and protection cost may not be negligible for developing countries, in light of their small gross domestic product. Using realistic sea-level rise scenarios based on the Integrated Global System Model (IGSM) simulations substantially reduce the cost of sea-level rise for two reasons: a smaller rise of sea level in 2100 and a nonlinear form of the path of sea-level rise. As in many of the past studies, the thesis employs conventional but rather unrealistic assumptions: perfect information about future sea-level rise and neglect of the stochastic nature of storm surges. The author suggests that future work should tackle uncertain and stochastic sea-level rise damages.; To improve the estimate of economic costs of future sea-level rise associated with global climate change...

"When you write a book, you need to have more than an interesting story. You need to have a desire to tell the story. You need to be personally invested in some way. You need to care about it." Malcolm Gladwell Author, "The Tipping Point". "I have never thought of writing for reputation and honor. What I have in my heart must come out, that is the reason why I compose. " Ludwig van Beethoven. The above quotes answer the basic question that many people have asked me (and I have asked myself): Why are you writing a thesis? The answer is simple: I believe there's a story to be told, and I have a personal passion for the subject. This thesis will analyze the patterns and practices of contemporary software startups. Though much has been written about software companies and much has been written on startups, I'm primarily interested in the intersection: software startups. More specifically, I will explore contemporary software startups that were started after the Internet bubble burst. About The Website: onstartups.com; As part of the thesis writing experience, I started a blog called "OnStartups" (http://onstartups.com) where I have been posting articles on software startups. More information on the onstartups.com site is included at the end of the thesis. My passion for learning more about software startups...
