This document is the conference program and abstracts for the annual joint meeting: “The Politics and Practices of Intangible Cultural Heritage”/“Le patrimoine immatériel: Problématiques, enjeux et perspectives” of the American Folklore Society and the Folklore Studies Association of Canada/Association Canadienne D'Ethnologie et de Folklore held at the Hilton Québec in Québec, QC, Canada on October 17-21, 2007.

Carruthers argues that an integrated faculty of metarepresentation evolved for mindreading and was later exapted for metacognition. A more consistent application of his approach would regard metarepresentation in mindreading with the same skeptical rigor, concluding that the “faculty” may have been entirely exapted. Given this result, the usefulness of Carruthers' line-drawing exercise is called into question.

Paper and presentation slides available.; Abstract—Parallel geofe, a parallel, three-dimensional finite element paleohydrologic modeling program, was developed based on the serial code, with the aim to simulate ground water flow on the Atlantic continental shelf in New England within the past two million years, and help to explain the large amount of unconventional freshwater plumes within offshore aquifer systems in the above area. We used ParMetis for mesh partitioning and Aztec to solve the sparse linear system for the modeled groundwater flow, heat transfer and solute transport processes. The resulting program demonstrates good scalability on the Teragrid systems.

While graduate pedagogy courses may result in specific teaching behaviors in the short term, little is known whether these scholarly teaching behaviors and attitudes endure over time. Multiple evidenced-based assessments of pedagogy courses which continue well past the completion of the course can demonstrate the ongoing development of students’ perceptions of teaching and learning and students’ progression as teacher-scholars. This poster summarizes an investigation exploring the lasting effects of a graduate pedagogy course entitled MSCI M620: Pedagogical Methods in Health Sciences. This course has been offered for two semesters and a total of sixteen graduate students from a variety of science-related disciplines enrolled in the course. We examined whether the course caused students to: 1) Develop more complex and refined attitudes regarding student learning; 2) Evaluate their current teaching methods and explore alternative teaching strategies; 3) Assess their teaching effectiveness; 4) Plan to be involved in a public teaching resource network; and 5) Develop lasting attitudes about scholarly teaching.

While librarians are concerned about copyright and intellectual property, the extent of their compliance with ethical guidelines and copyright laws is unclear. This study examines, through content analysis, libraries' approaches toward copyright concerns in three countries (Israel, Russia, and the United States), and suggests a model of library response to social responsibility issues.
