Trabalho apresentado no âmbito do Mestrado em Engenharia Informática, como requisito parcial para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia Informática; The evolution of mobile phones has made these devices more than just simple mobile communication devices. Current mobile phones include such features as built-in digital cameras, the ability to play and record multimedia contents and also the possibility of playing games. Most of these devices have support for Java developed applications, as well as multiple wireless technologies (e.g. GSM/GPRS, UMTS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi). All these features have been made possible due to technological evolution that led to the improvement of computational power, storage capacity, and communication capabilities of these devices. This thesis presents a distributed data management system, based on optimistic replication, named FEW Phone File System. This system takes advantage of the storage capacity and wireless communication capabilities of current mobile phones, by allowing users to carry their personal data “in” their mobile phones, and to access it in any workstation, as if they were files in the local file system. The FEW Phone File System is based on a hybrid architecture that merges the client/server model with peer-to-peer replication...

In the tournament games only the winner can advance to the next rounds of competition. The important feature of tournament is that the reward is based on the rank order among competitors rather than absolute level of their performances. This type of reward system can be widely found in competition for promotion in business organizations. For example, many hourly workers in manufacturing plants compete for a limited number of supervisory positions; a number of vice presidents in a firm strive for one coveted position of president. The employee participation in improvement activities have been thought of as one of the best practices taken in many auto plants around the world. So we can find auto firms often evaluating their workers on the basis of how good performances they show in off-line activities such as suggestions and QC circles. Or at least it is one of many evaluating items. Since the opportunity of promotions is limited but often known to production workers in advance, it may be regarded as prizes open to candidates. Tournament theory shows that compensation based on relative order can give participants an incentive to provide an optimal level of efforts under certain a set of assumptions. It is often argued that the optimal level of efforts depend positively on the price differential for winning the game. There has been many studies to analyze the benefits and costs that employee participation activities can give individual workers [Cooke (1990)]. However...

This research aims to acknowledge the virtual dating phenomenon. The research deals with this phenomenon in Orkut, a social networking website. Thus, it considers debates and forums that were present in a Brazilian Orkut online community called Conheci meu amor pela internet (I met my love through the Internet). As a staring point the research dealt with issues such as: what are the debates about? How can we deal with practices that question their own dating process? According to the initial hypothesis, these debates reveal different contemporary social aspects: 1) they emerge as a response to demands on behalf of a society that is rather reflexive. This reflexive element is fundamental for the constitution of the self 2) these debates work as support elements in social relations that are built upon this sphere. In this context, individuals write about themselves and constitute themselves as real individuals that acquire a sense as subjects; and 3) people discuss online dating as form reconstructing former experiences. Empirical analysis demonstrates that these forums and polls present themselves as a social phenomenon that allows a particular form of self presentation on the internet. In order for these subjects to present themselves they built their own self narratives. What is possible to acknowledge considering these narratives is that there is a predominance of the element of intrigue that is further solved and demonstrate a satisfactory result. These narrators then choose online dating situation that present happy endings and happiness that are associated to romantic ideals that are worthwhile being shown. The contents present in these narratives are dealt with by the research. Thus...

This paper examines the potential role of civil society action in increasing state accountability for development in Sub-Saharan Africa. It further develops the analytical framework of the World Development Report 2004 on accountability relationships, to emphasize the underlying political economy drivers of accountability and implications for how civil society is constituted and functions. It argues on this basis that the most important domain for improving accountability is through the political relations between citizens, civil society, and state leadership. The evidence broadly suggests that when higher-level political leadership provides sufficient or appropriate powers for citizen participation in holding within-state agencies or frontline providers accountable, there is frequently positive impact on outcomes. However, the big question remaining for such types of interventions is how to improve the incentives of higher-level leadership to pursue appropriate policy design and implementation. The paper argues that there is substantial scope for greater efforts in this domain...

This study presents the differences of competition between mini-basketball with the traditional rules (5-a-side) and minibasket with rule modifications (3-a-side) such as: reduced number of players on court, compulsory participation in 2 of the match???s 4 periods, reduced court size, placing the free throw line at 3m from the basket, and including a three-point line. The sample that was selected included 47 mini-basketball players, and the study was carried out using a quasi-experimental design without a control group. The aim was to determine the effect of rule modifications on the participation of the player with the ball. It was demonstrated that the degree of individual participation is greater in mini-basketball with modified rules.

A major AI challenge for entity-level military simulations (i.e. simulations of individual soldiers, vehicles, etc.) and computer games is efficiently determining which entitites on a virtual battlefield can see each other.. Entity inter-visibility is traditionally modeled by tracing a line of sight (LOS), i.e. entity A sees entity B if the line segment between A's eyes and the top of B is unobstructed. This model is, however, highly inaccurate. Computing lines of sight to multiple points on the target entity improves accuracy, but at the cost of futher loading the CPU...(see document for continuation)

The aim of this article is to present a Project in the Oporto’s Institute of Accounting and Administration, which pretends to contribute for a change in the way of teaching and learning Mathematics. One of the main objectives of this project is to innovate the teaching and learning processes, exploring technologies as a pedagogical resource and to induce higher motivation to students, improve the rate of success and make available to students a set of materials adapted to their needs. This concern is justified due to the fact that students have a weak preparation, without consolidated basis. Since the year 2007/2008 the courses were adjusted to the Bologna process, which requires several changes in teacher’s and student’s roles, methodologies and assessment. The number of weekly classes has been reduced, so it was necessary to develop new strategies and methodologies to support the student. With the implementation of the Bologna Process in the Accounting degree, we felt a great need to provide other types of activities to students. To complement our theoretical and practical classes we have developed a project called MatActiva based on the Moodle platform offered by PAOL - Projecto de Apoio On-Line (Online Support Project). Moodle allows us to use the language TEX to create materials that use mathematical symbols. Using this functionality...

xiv, 233 p. : il. ; 23 cm.; Libro Electrónico; A Field Guide to Genetic Programming (ISBN 978-1-4092-0073-4) is an introduction to genetic programming (GP). GP is a systematic, domain-independent method for getting computers to solve problems automatically starting from a high-level statement of what needs to be done. Using ideas from natural evolution, GP starts from an ooze of random computer programs, and progressively refines them through processes of mutation and sexual recombination, until solutions emerge. All this without the user having to know or specify the form or structure of solutions in advance. GP has generated a plethora of human-competitive results and applications, including novel scientific discoveries and patentable inventions. The effects of self-set goals and public posting on athletic performance of 5 collegiate football players was studied. All players were linebackers on a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II football team. The dependent variables were the percentage of correct occasions when the linebacker (a) positioned himself to cover a specified area on the field during a pass or from the line of scrimmage during a run; (b) moved to the correct position in response to the positioning of the offense; and (c) tackled and stopped the progress of the ball carrier. A multiple baseline design across behaviors showed an immediate increase in the practice performance of the players and a corresponding increase in game performance following introduction of the independent variable. This study extends research using public posting in sport by demonstrating the effects of player-determined goals and public posting of goal attainment.

We investigate a non-cooperative game-theoretic model for the formation of communication networks by selfish agents. Each agent aims for a central position at minimum cost for creating edges. In particular, the general model (Fabrikant et al., PODC'03) became popular for studying the structure of the Internet or social networks. Despite its significance, locality in this game was first studied only recently (Bil\o et al., SPAA'14), where a worst case locality model was presented, which came with a high efficiency loss in terms of quality of equilibria. Our main contribution is a new and more optimistic view on locality: agents are limited in their knowledge and actions to their local view ranges, but can probe different strategies and finally choose the best. We study the influence of our locality notion on the hardness of computing best responses, convergence to equilibria, and quality of equilibria. Moreover, we compare the strength of local versus non-local strategy-changes. Our results address the gap between the original model and the worst case locality variant. On the bright side, our efficiency results are in line with observations from the original model, yet we have a non-constant lower bound on the price of anarchy.; Comment: An extended abstract of this paper has been accepted for publication in the proceedings of the 40th International Conference on Mathematical Foundations on Computer Science

## Scheduling of Sport Tournaments with Absences

We study time scheduling problems with allowed absences. One may think on a sport tournament where each player (each team) is permitted a certain number $t$ of absences. We then examine how many rounds are needed to schedule the whole tournament in the worst case. Clearly, this upper limit depends on $t$ and on the structure of the graph $G$ whose edges represent the games that have to be played. However, it also depends on whether or not the absences are announced before the tournament starts. Therefore, we actually have two upper limits for the number of required rounds. We have $\chi^t(G)$ for pre-scheduling, if all absences are prefixed, and we have $\chi_{\textit{OL}}^t(G)$ for on-line scheduling, if we have to stay flexible and deal with absences when they occur. We conjecture that $\chi^t(G)=\Delta(G)+2t$ and that $\chi_{\textit{OL}}^t(G)=\chi'(G)+2t.$ The first conjecture is stronger than the Total Coloring Conjecture, while the second is weaker than the On-Line List Edge Coloring Conjecture. Our conjectures hold for all bipartite graphs. For complete graphs, we prove them partially. Here, explicit scheduling schemes and connections to symmetric Latin squares with prescribed diagonal are involved. Lower and upper bounds to $\chi^t(G)$ and $\chi_{\textit{OL}}^t(G)$ for general multi-graphs $G$ are established...

In this paper we present TDLeaf(lambda), a variation on the TD(lambda) algorithm that enables it to be used in conjunction with game-tree search. We present some experiments in which our chess program `KnightCap'' used TDLeaf(lambda) to learn its evaluation function while playing on the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS, fics.onenet.net). The main success we report is that KnightCap improved from a 1650 rating to a 2150 rating in just 308 games and 3 days of play. As a reference, a rating of 1650 corresponds to about level B human play (on a scale from E (1000) to A (1800)), while 2150 is human master level. We discuss some of the reasons for this success, principle among them being the use of on-line, rather than self-play.; Comment: 9 pages
