On-line learning methods have been applied successfully in multi-agent systems to achieve coordination among agents. Learning in multi-agent systems implies in a non-stationary scenario perceived by the agents, since the behavior of other agents may change as they simultaneously learn how to improve their actions. Non-stationary scenarios can be modeled as Markov Games, which can be solved using the Minimax-Q algorithm a combination of Q-learning (a Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithm which directly learns an optimal control policy) and the Minimax algorithm. However, finding optimal control policies using any RL algorithm (Q-learning and Minimax-Q included) can be very time consuming. Trying to improve the learning time of Q-learning, we considered the QS-algorithm. in which a single experience can update more than a single action value by using a spreading function. In this paper, we contribute a Minimax-QS algorithm which combines the Minimax-Q algorithm and the QS-algorithm. We conduct a series of empirical evaluation of the algorithm in a simplified simulator of the soccer domain. We show that even using a very simple domain-dependent spreading function, the performance of the learning algorithm can be improved.

We develop a dynamic model of price and quality competition in order to analyse the effects of competition intensity on quality provision and to which extent an unregulated market is able to provide a socially optimal quality level. Using a differential-game approach with price and quality competition on a Hotelling line, we compare the benchmark open-loop solution against the feedback closed-loop solution, which implies strategic dynamic interaction over time. We find that steady-state quality in the closed-loop solution is (i) increasing in the degree of competition between firms, (ii) lower than in the open-loop solution, and (iii) lower than the socially optimal level. In contrast, steady-state quality in the open-loop solution is at the socially optimal level and independent of competition intensity. Thus, our analysis identifies dynamic strategic interactions between competing firms as an independent source of inefficiency in quality provision.; COMPETE, QREN, FEDER, FCT

Background While several benefits are attributed to the Internet and video games, an important proportion of the population presents symptoms related to possible new technological addictions and there has been little discussion of treatment of problematic technology use. Although demand for knowledge is growing, only a small number of treatments have been described. Objective To conduct a systematic review of the literature, to establish Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a possible strategy for treating Internet and video game addictions. Method The review was conducted in the following databases: Science Direct on Line, PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane Clinical Trials Library, BVS and SciELO. The keywords used were: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; therapy; treatment; with association to the terms Internet addiction and video game addiction. Given the scarcity of studies in the field, no restrictions to the minimum period of publication were made, so that articles found until October 2013 were accounted. Results Out of 72 articles found, 23 described CBT as a psychotherapy for Internet and video game addiction. The manuscripts showed the existence of case studies and protocols with satisfactory efficacy. Discussion Despite the novelty of technological dependencies...

Impervious surface area (ISA) is considered as an indicator of environment change and is regarded as an important input parameter for hydrological cycle simulation, water management and area pollution assessment. The Pearl River Delta (PRD), the 3rd most important economic district of China, is chosen in this paper to extract the ISA information based on Landsat images of 1998, 2003 and 2008 by using a linear spectral un-mixing method and to monitor impervious surface change by analyzing the multi-temporal Landsat-derived fractional impervious surface. Results of this study were as follows: (1) the area of ISA in the PRD increased 79.09% from 1998 to 2003 and 26.88% from 2003 to 2008 separately; (2) the spatial distribution of ISA was described according to the 1998/2003 percentage respectively. Most of middle and high percentage ISA was located in northwestern and southeastern of the whole delta, and middle percentage ISA was mainly located in the city interior, high percentage ISA was mainly located in the suburban around the city accordingly; (3) the expanding direction and trend of high percentage ISA was discussed in order to understand the change of urban in this delta; High percentage ISA moved from inner city to edge of urban area during 1998–2003 and moved to the suburban area that far from the urban area mixed with jumpily and gradually during 2003–2008. According to the discussion of high percentage ISA spatial expanded direction...

Based on the observation that the study of affective manifestations can enable another interpretation position to the field of Communication, this dissertation seeks to work with the presence of aesthetics, sensations, emotions and affections immersed in the communication field, specifically in the universe of journalism. What interests us here is to understand, rather than the representative and intellectuals signs that constitute journalistic language, but mainly the powerful devices of affection and aesthetic whereby the language uses in the construction of its discourse. Thus, the main objective of this research is to perform a counterpoint between what, on one side we’ll name it aestheticized journalism, and in another, sensational or sensationalist journalism. Our main intent is to take emergency broader concept of aesthetics (like “faculty of feeling”) and link it to the practice of journalism to demonstrate that the communication field cannot be defined only by its operating instrumentality, but that other requirements as sensitivity and subjectivity are notoriously important for the construction of a journalism that integrates community and otherness . From another point, we take the concept of sensational journalism...

This paper provides a transparent framework for thinking about optimal investment in reputation by a trustworthy government. This topic has been neglected by the existing literature on reputation games but is potentially a central issue in actual policymaking. A nonstandard feature of this model is that a "trustworthy" government (able to pre-commit) optimally chooses a policy announcement to which it commits. Thus, investing in reputation can be achieved by announcing policy plans that are costly and in turn are unlikely to be enacted if the government were an "opportunistic" type (unable to precommit). I identify the key trade-off in determining the optimal policy plans, which is mainly influenced by the difference in the time preference across types. When a trustworthy type is sufficiently more patient than an opportunistic type, there will be substantial reputation-building by the trustworthy type in the early stages of the game, which eventually leads to full separation from the opportunistic type.; First version of this paper: November 2008. This paper is based on the first chapter of my doctoral thesis at Boston University. I owe a great debt of gratitude to Robert G. King for his constant guidance and support. The paper also benefits from discussions with Russell Cooper...

This paper investigates empirically the effect of anticipated price competition and distribution costs in firms' location choices within an oligopolistic market. I set up a static location-price game of incomplete information in which retailers choose their locations based on (firm-)location-specific characteristics, the expected market power and the expected degree of price competition. In particular, I tie the firms' strategic location incentives to the population distribution using the concept of captive consumers. This approach is in line with theoretical spatial price competition models and does not require price or quantity data. I address the computational difficulties of the estimation using mathematical programming with equilibrium constraints. Applied to the supermarket industry, the model confirms the existence of benefits of spatial differentiation for firms' profits and provides evidence that firms anticipate price competition and distribution costs in their site selections.; I gratefully acknowledge that this research was supported by grant ECO2012-31358 from the Spanish Ministry of Education.

The main objective of maximizing accessibility is not always taken into account in the design of web applications, specifically to facilitate access for disabled people. We consider an extension of the 2-person R\'enyi-Ulam liar game in which lies are governed by a channel $C$, a set of allowable lie strings of maximum length $k$. Carole selects $x\in[n]$, and Paul makes $t$-ary queries to uniquely determine $x$. In each of $q$ rounds, Paul weakly partitions $[n]=A_0\cup >... \cup A_{t-1}$ and asks for $a$ such that $x\in A_a$. Carole responds with some $b$, and if $a\neq b$, then $x$ accumulates a lie $(a,b)$. Carole's string of lies for $x$ must be in the channel $C$. Paul wins if he determines $x$ within $q$ rounds. We further restrict Paul to ask his questions in two off-line batches. We show that for a range of sizes of the second batch, the maximum size of the search space $[n]$ for which Paul can guarantee finding the distinguished element is $\sim t^{q+k}/(E_k(C)\binom{q}{k})$ as $q\to\infty$, where $E_k(C)$ is the number of lie strings in $C$ of maximum length $k$. This generalizes previous work of Dumitriu and Spencer, and of Ahlswede, Cicalese, and Deppe. We extend Paul's strategy to solve also the pathological liar variant, in a unified manner which gives the existence of asymptotically perfect two-batch adaptive codes for the channel $C$.; Comment: 26 pages

In Martin Gardner's October, 1976 Mathematical Games column in Scientific American, he posed the following problem: "What is the smallest number of [queens] you can put on a board of side n such that no [queen] can be added without creating three in a row, a column, or a diagonal?" We use the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz to prove that this number is at least n, except in the case when n is congruent to 3 modulo 4, in which case one less may suffice. A second, more elementary proof is also offered in the case that n is even.; Comment: 11 pages; lower bound in main theorem corrected to n-1 (from n) in the case of n congruent to 3 mod 4, minor edits, added journal reference

Player ONE chooses a meager set and player TWO, a nowhere dense set per inning. They play $\omega$ many innings. ONE's consecutive choices must form a (weakly) increasing sequence. TWO wins if the union of the chosen nowhere dense sets covers the union of the chosen meager sets. A strategy for TWO which depends on knowing only the uncovered part of the most recently chosen meager set is said to be a remainder strategy. Theorem (among others): TWO has a winning remainder strategy for this game played on the real line with its usual topology.

Since September 2007, a large scale lexical network for French is under construction through methods based on some kind of popular consensus by means of games (JeuxDeMots project). Human intervention can be considered as marginal. It is limited to corrections, adjustments and validation of the senses of terms, which amounts to less than 0,5 % of the relations in the network. To appreciate the quality of this resource built by non-expert users (players of the game), we use a similar approach to its construction. The resource must be validated by laymen, persistent in time, on open class vocabulary. We suggest to check whether our tool is able to solve the Tip of the Tongue (TOT) problem. Just like JeuxDeMots, our tool can be considered as an on-line game. Like the former, it allows the acquisition of new relations, enriching thus the (existing) network.

Since we cannot put stars in a laboratory, astrophysicists had to wait till the invention of computers before becoming laboratory scientists. For half a century now, we have been conducting experiments in our virtual laboratories. However, we ourselves have remained behind the keyboard, with the screen of the monitor separating us from the world we are simulating. Recently, 3D on-line technology, developed first for games but now deployed in virtual worlds like Second Life, is beginning to make it possible for astrophysicists to enter their virtual labs themselves, in virtual form as avatars. This has several advantages, from new possibilities to explore the results of the simulations to a shared presence in a virtual lab with remote collaborators on different continents. I will report my experiences with the use of Qwaq Forums, a virtual world developed by a new company (see http://www.qwaq.com); Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, Conference proceedings for IAUS246 'Dynamical Evolution of Dense Stellar Systems', ed. Procedural content generation (PCG) has recently become one of the hottest topics in computational intelligence and AI game researches. Among a variety of PCG techniques, search-based approaches overwhelmingly dominate PCG development at present. While SBPCG leads to promising results and successful applications, it poses a number of challenges ranging from representation to evaluation of the content being generated. In this paper, we present an alternative yet generic PCG framework, named learning-based procedure content generation (LBPCG), to provide potential solutions to several challenging problems in existing PCG techniques. By exploring and exploiting information gained in game development and public beta test via data-driven learning, our framework can generate robust content adaptable to end-user or target players on-line with minimal interruption to their experience. Furthermore, we develop enabling techniques to implement the various models required in our framework. For a proof of concept, we have developed a prototype based on the classic open source first-person shooter game, Quake. Simulation results suggest that our framework is promising in generating quality content.; Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, manuscript submitted to IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and AI Games (Also a technical report...
