The aim of this paper is to provide a tractable model where both socialization (or network formation) and productive efforts can be analyzed simultaneously. This permits a fullfledged equilibrium/welfare analysis of network formation with endogenous productive efforts and heterogeneous agents. We show that there exist two stable interior equilibria, which we can Pareto rank. The socially efficient outcome lies between these two equilibria. When the intrinsic returns to production and socialization increase, all equilibrium actions decrease at the Pareto-superior equilibrium, while they increase at the Pareto-inferior equilibrium. In both cases, the percentage change in socialization effort is higher (in absolute value) than that of the productive effort; We gratefully acknowledge the financial support from Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation under grants CONSOLIDER INGENIO 2010 CSD2006-0016 and ECO2009-10531

This survey examines the empirical literature on the relationship between public R&D subsidies and private R&D investment over the past five decades. The survey reveals a considerable heterogeneity of empirical results that cannot be explained fully by methodological issues. We aim to provide further explanations of the possible causes of that heterogeneity. In particular, we emphasise a set of issues that, in our view, are critical to understanding the potential effect of public R&D subsidies on private R&D spending. Special attention is paid to the dynamic aspects and composition of firm R&D, the constraints faced by the firm (such as financial constraints), and the amount and source of public subsidies. None of these issues have been investigated in depth. We formulate a set of research assumptions to guide future empirical research in this field.

We study incentives to vertically integrate in an industry with vertically differentiated downstream firms. Vertical integration by one of the firms increases production costs for the rival. Increased production costs negatively affects quality investment both by the integrated firm and the unintegrated rival. Quality investment by both firms decreases under any (vertical integration) scenario. The decrease in quality invesment by both firms softens competition among downstream firms. By integrating first, a firm always produces the high quality good and earns higher profits. A fully integrated industry, with increased product differentiation, is observed in equilibrium. Due to increase in firm profits, social welfare under this structure is greater than under no integration.; Hernan and Kujal acknowledge support from grant 2009/00055/001 from the Spanish Ministry of Education. The aim of this paper is to analyze the evolution of productivity and how firm behavior and institutional conditions affects productivity. For that purpose, we use a longitudinal sample of Spanish manufacturing and services companies between 1983 and 2006, as well as OECD indicators on product market regulations. The productivity measurement is based on the control function approach, to overcome the endogeneity bias. Both for manufacturing and services firms, we have found that the share of temporary employment tends to reduce productivity, the effect being stronger for services firms, which make a more intensive use of this employment type. Our results also show that increases in competition lead to productivity improvements. Besides, those manufacturing firms who keep undertaking inhouse production of services tend to be more productive. The lack of competition in the services sector may be preventing firms to increase specialization while outsourcing nonmanufacturing activities; Research funding from DGI, Spanish Ministry of Education, Grant No. ECO2009-11165, is also acknowledged

Dissertation submitted as partial requirement for the conferral of Master in Marketing /JEL -M31 - MarketingJEL- L22 - Firm Organization and Market Structure; The present dissertation reflects on the contribution of 360 deals to the recorded music industry. This contractual form has been arising in order to easily recoup the investments provided by record labels to the artist and to explore other new revenue streams. The framework of the study is supported by the current state of the industry and an overview of the previous research concerning the recorded music market. Record labels have been struggling for the past years with the decrease of recorded music sales. The digital era has allowed a massification on music consumption, as the Internet has provided easier access to music, whether through new legal platforms but also through illegal downloading. A qualitative approach was carried out in order to comprehend the new concepts and challenges faced by the recorded companies. Six personal interviews with music executives were conducted, according to a structured guide elaborated, based on the literature review. Combining this data, some previous propositions were made in order to explain the current state of the industry and how 360 deals are being implemented in the industry...

We study vertical integration incorporating the fact that it creates the possibility of knowledge disclosure. We consider a setting where, through integrating, an upstream monopolist learns its downstream partner’s innovation, and can disclose it to its downstream rival. We show that a vertically integrated firm chooses to fully disclose its knowledge to its downstream rival. Knowledge disclosure intensifies downstream competition but, at the same time, expands the downstream market size. We also show that, due to knowledge disclosure, vertical integration increases firms’ innovation incentives, consumer and total welfare, and decreases, instead of raises, the rival’s cost.

A methodology is developed and applied to compare the performance of publicly funded agencies providing treatment for alcohol abuse in Maine. The methodology estimates a Wiener process that determines the duration of completed treatments, while allowing for agency differences in the effectiveness of treatment, standards for completion of treatment, patient attrition, and the characteristics of patient populations. Notably, the Wiener process model separately identifies agency fixed effects that describe differences in the effectiveness of treatment ('treatment effects'), and effects that describe differences in the unobservable characteristics of patients ('population effects'). The estimated model enables hypothetical comparisons of how different agencies would treat the same populations. The policy experiment of transferring the treatment practices of more cost effective agencies suggests that Maine could have significantly reduced treatment costs without compromising health outcomes by identifying and transferring best practices.

Inspired by the empirical work of Holmes (2011), which suggests the economic importance of distribution costs in the firm's optimal location decision, this paper introduces endogenous distribution costs in the model of Hotelling (1929). The proposed model shows an interesting trade-off between demand and cost considerations when a firm plays a hybrid location strategy. Given the location of local distribution centers and agents' displacement cost parameters, it is shown that, under certain conditions, the optimal location of the firms are in the interior of the Hotelling line rather than at the edges of the line. The supply cost effect which drives this result diminishes with the distance of the distribution center from the market so that the scale of the distribution area becomes also determinant for an optimal location strategy. The theoretical results are complemented with an empirical analysis for distribution intensive grocery retailers using location data for the two main conventional supermarket chains in the U.S. The data suggest that the firms consider distribution costs when differentiating from the competitor.

The proposed Drosophila melanogaster L23a ribosomal protein features a conserved C-terminal amino acid signature characteristic of other L23a family members and a unique N-terminal extension [Koyama et al. (Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase interacts with novel Drosophila ribosomal proteins, L22 and l23a, with unique histone-like amino-terminal extensions. Gene 1999; 226: 339–345)], absent from Saccharomyces cerevisiae L25 that nearly doubles the size of fly L23a. The ability of fly L23a to replace the role of yeast L25 in ribosome biogenesis was determined by creating a yeast strain carrying an L25 chromosomal gene disruption and a plasmid-encoded FLAG-tagged L23a gene. Though affected by a reduced growth rate, the strain is dependent on fly L23a-FLAG function for survival and growth, demonstrating functional compatibility between the fly and yeast proteins. Pulse-chase experiments reveal a delay in rRNA processing kinetics, most notably at a late cleavage step that converts precursor 27S rRNA into mature 25S rRNA, likely contributing to the strain's slower growth pattern. Yet, given the essential requirement for L23(a)/L25 in ribosome biogenesis, there is a remarkable tolerance for accommodating the fly L23a N-terminal extension within the structure of the yeast ribosome. A search of available databases shows that the unique N-terminal extension is shared by multiple insect lineages. An evolutionary perspective on L23a structure and function within insect lineages is discussed.

Regulatory nascent chains interact with the ribosomal exit tunnel and modulate their own translation. To characterize nascent chain recognition by the ribosome at the atomic level, extensive molecular dynamics simulations of TnaC, the leader peptide of the tryptophanase operon, inside the exit tunnel were performed for an aggregate time of 2.1 μs. The simulations, complemented by quantum chemistry calculations, suggest that the critical TnaC residue W12 is recognized by the ribosome via a cation-π interaction, whereas TnaC's D16 forms salt bridges with ribosomal proteins. The simulations also show that TnaC-mediated translational arrest does not involve a swinging of ribosomal protein L22, as previously proposed. Furthermore, bioinformatic analyses and simulations suggest nascent chain elements which may prevent translational arrest in various organisms. Altogether, the current study unveils atomic-detail interactions that explain the role of elements of TnaC and the ribosome essential for translational arrest.

A global phylogenetic analysis using parsimony of 16S rRNA gene sequences from 46 mollicutes, 19 mycoplasmalike organisms (MLOs) (new trivial name, phytoplasmas), and several related bacteria placed the MLOs definitively among the members of the class Mollicutes and revealed that MLOs form a large discrete monophyletic clade, paraphyletic to the Acholeplasma species, within the Anaeroplasma clade. Within the MLO clade resolved in the global mollicutes phylogeny and a comprehensive MLO phylogeny derived by parsimony analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences from 30 diverse MLOs representative of nearly all known distinct MLO groups, five major phylogenetic groups with a total of 11 distinct subclades (monophyletic groups or taxa) could be recognized. These MLO subclades (roman numerals) and designated type strains were as follows: i, Maryland aster yellows AY1; ii, apple proliferation AP-A; iii, peanut witches'-broom PnWB; iv, Canada peach X CX; v, rice yellow dwarf RYD; vi, pigeon pea witches'-broom PPWB; vii, palm lethal yellowing LY; viii, ash yellows AshY; ix, clover proliferation CP; x, elm yellows EY; and xi, loofah witches'-broom LfWB. The designations of subclades and their phylogenetic positions within the MLO clade were supported by a congruent phylogeny derived by parsimony analyses of ribosomal protein L22 gene sequences from most representative MLOs. On the basis of the phylogenies inferred in the present study...

Ribosomal stalling is used to regulate gene expression and can occur in a species-specific manner. Stalling during translation of the MifM leader peptide regulates expression of the downstream membrane protein biogenesis factor YidC2 (YqjG) in Bacillus subtilis, but not in Escherichia coli. In the absence of structures of Gram-positive bacterial ribosomes, a molecular basis for species-specific stalling has remained unclear. Here we present the structure of a Gram-positive B. subtilis MifM-stalled 70S ribosome at 3.5–3.9 Å, revealing a network of interactions between MifM and the ribosomal tunnel, which stabilize a non-productive conformation of the PTC that prevents aminoacyl-tRNA accommodation and thereby induces translational arrest. Complementary genetic analyses identify a single amino acid within ribosomal protein L22 that dictates the species specificity of the stalling event. Such insights expand our understanding of how the synergism between the ribosome and the nascent chain is utilized to modulate the translatome in a species-specific manner.

Chemometric (statistical) methods are employed to classify a set of neolignan compounds with activity against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The AM1 (Austin Model 1) method was used to calculate a set of molecular descriptors (properties) of the neolignan compounds under study. The descriptors were further analyzed using Principal Components Analysis (PCA), Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) chemometric methods. The PCA and HCA methods were quite efficient to classify the compounds into two groups (active and inactive) and three descriptors were found to be important in the classification: the highest occupied molecular orbital energy (E HOMO), the bond order between C1'-R7 atoms (L14) and the bond order between C5' -R6 atoms (L22). The three variables responsible for the separation between active and inactive compounds are all electronic descriptors, therefore we can conclude that electronic effects should have an important role when one is trying to understand the activity of neolignan compounds against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.
