Thesis (Ph. D.)--University of Rochester. Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, 2011.; Arts educators have long been concerned about the marginalization of arts in schools. The author posits that the deepest roots of this problem come from implicit curricular assumptions and explicit operational structures surrounding the arts that obstruct their use as tools for inquiry in schools. Such curricular assumptions and structures can be transformed through school design and communities of practice that encourage a high-quality arts teaching approach she calls arts as collaborative inquiry. The study investigates a K-6 charter school with a whole-school integrated curriculum development practice that blends together curriculum from a local river project, Expeditionary Learning, Responsive Classroom, and an arts as collaborative inquiry approach to learning. It focuses on the curriculum development process of seven teams of grade level and arts teachers who designed and implemented arts as collaborative inquiry over the course of 12 weeks. The author seeks to understand these teachers’ formative perspectives on inquiry pedagogy, traces the processes by which they developed cross-curricular connections...

Artists have always been reliant on the generosity of arts patrons, but in more recent times, has taken on this patronage role . Since the establishment of federal funding for the arts, government funding has become a source upon which have become increasingly reliant. The Australian Government's support for the cultural sector amounts to nearly four billion dollars annually. In the Australian Capital Territory, we are fortunate to have a vibrant and active arts community, with one of the highest consumer rates of the arts per capita. The Canberra community enjoys access to a rich and diverse arts sector. Artists who choose to stay and practice here are oft en internationally renowned, and there is a range of amateur, pro-amateur, professional , individual and community based art projects existing in this city . The ACT Government's public funding program provides support for the local cultural sector, put into effect through the Arts and Cultural Services Branch. This is done through matching the allocation of funding with those projects most likely to contribute to the arts development strategy of the ACT Government. This development strategy is Arts Capital - a policy document developed by the ACT Government, which provides a cultural vision of the future for this city. It is essential that applicants funded through the program address the criteria that are laid out in Arts Capital. One of the most successful categories of the arts funding programs is the Chief Minister's Creative Arts Fellowships. The Fellowships are awarded to successful mid-career artists living and working in the ACT. To complete this research I examined the acquittals and interviewed the recipients of this award from a period of 1998 - 2001...

This Issues Paper is a first step in the development of an Indigenous Arts Strategy (IAS) for the Northern Territory (NT). It aims to do two things. First, to assess the current state of Indigenous arts in the NT. Second, to canvass issues for consideration by arts stakeholders and to facilitate the development of an Indigenous arts support framework for the NT. It should be noted at the outset that the development of such an Indigenous arts strategy is unprecedented in the NT, and possibly in Australia. Strategies have been developed for the arts generally and arguably for the Indigenous visual arts industry nationally, but there has never been a comprehensive attempt to develop a strategy for Indigenous arts at the State level. To some extent it is fitting that the NT is taking the leadership role here, because not only is it the most significant Indigenous jurisdiction in terms of relative population (29% of the NT's small total population of just under 200,000 is Indigenous according to the 2001 Census) but also because Indigenous arts here, and especially the visual arts, have such high regional, national and international profiles. This Issues Paper seeks to chart a realistic pathway to ensure Indigenous arts success under an NT Indigenous arts advocacy and support framework. The challenge for the NT Government's IAS will be to develop a positive and achievable Indigenous arts policy umbrella that is warmly welcomed by the NT arts community and the NT constituency and that is regarded as valuable by other major Commonwealth funding agencies. This suggests...

Enfin...
