Evaluation of outcomes after aesthetic surgery still is a challenge in plastic surgery. The evaluation frequently is based on subjective criteria. This study used a new clinical grading scale to evaluate aesthetic results for plastic surgeries to the abdomen. The method scores each of the following five parameters: volume of subcutaneous tissue, contour, excess of skin, aspect of the navel, and quality of the scar on the abdominal wall. The scale options are 0 (poor), 1 (fair), and 2 (good), and the total rate can range from 0 to 10. The study included 40 women ages 18-53 years. Of these 40 women, 20 underwent traditional abdominoplasty, and 20 had liposuction alone. Preoperatively and at least 1 year later, photographic results were analyzed and scored by three independent plastic surgeons. In the abdominoplasty group, the average grade rose from 2.9 +/- A 0.4 to 6.8 +/- A 0.4 postoperatively. In the liposuction group, the average grade was 5.3 +/- A 0.5 preoperatively and 7.7 +/- A 0.4 postoperatively. In both groups, the average postoperative grade was significantly higher than the preoperative grade. The mean scores for groups A and L were significantly different, demonstrating that the scale was sensitive in identifying different anatomic abnormalities in the abdomen. The rating scale used for the aesthetic evaluation of the abdomen was effective in the analysis of two different procedures: conventional abdominoplasty and liposuction. Abdominoplasty provided the greater gain according to a comparison of the pre- and postoperative scores.

Abstract Background There are scarce evidences that evaluated the impact of periodontal disease on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) taking marginal gingival alterations into consideration. Thus, this study aimed to verify the association between OHRQoL and gingival enlargement and gingival bleeding in subjects under fixed orthodontic treatment (FOT). Methods 330 participants under FOT for at least 6 months were examined by a single, calibrated examiner for periodontal variables and dental aesthetic index. Socio-economic background, body mass index, time with orthodontic appliances, and use of dental floss were assessed by oral interviews. OHRQoL was evaluated using the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire. The assessment of associations used unadjusted and adjusted Poisson regression models. Results Higher impacts on the OHIP-14 overall were observed in subjects who presented higher levels of anterior gingival enlargement (RR 2.83; 95% CI 2.60-3.09), were non-whites (RR 1.29; 95% CI 1.15-1.45), had household income lower than five national minimum wages (RR 1.85; 95% CI 1.30-2.61)...

Landscape design, construction and management should no longer be the result of superficial approaches based exclusively on designers’ and planners’ ideas. This research starts with the assumption that the aesthetic component constitutes an essential attribute for better understanding and evaluating landscapes. This study analyzes the aesthetic quality and economic valuation of the Lower Guadiana river landscape, through the application of direct and indirect landscape evaluation methods. In order to gauge not only experts’ opinion, it is supported by the application of public participation techniques about the opinion and perceptions of the site visitors/users. The present research considered the analysis of six landscape subunits regarding landscape quality, fragility and visual absorption capacity. The obtained results showed that there are significant differences between the perceptions of the general public and experts’ analysis. Touristic Complexes and Golf Courses had high visual quality, while Agricultural and Production Areas had high visual fragility. Moreover, the performed analysis made clear that the combined use of landscape assessment methods is suited to this type of study, since it enables quantifying the value of existence...

Endodontically treated teeth with excessive loss of tooth structure would require to be restored with post and core to enhance the strength and durability of the tooth and to achieve retention for the restoration. The non-metallic posts have a superior aesthetic quality. Various core build-up materials can be used to build-up cores on the posts placed in endodontically treated teeth. These materials would show variation in their bonding with the non-metallic posts thus affecting the strength and resistance to fracture of the remaining tooth structure.

Instruments are used in odontology to measure the Quality of Life Related to Oral Health (OHRQoL) to scale how the oral condition interferes with functional areas, of the people s psychological and social life. This cross-sectional study, held in Natal/RN, with 215 students from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) has investigated the association between the performance of daily activities and oral health status of school adolescents from 15 to 19 years of age, through the normative index DMFT (permanent teeth decayed, missing and filled), CPI (Community Periodontal Index) and DAI (dental Aesthetic Index) and subjective questionnaire assessment of quality of life related oral health OIDP index (oral impacts on daily performance). It was also carried out the socioeconomic characteristics of students through IFRN own data. Concerning the analysis of data was performed a descriptive analysis of the variables by their absolute and relative frequencies and measures of central tendency. The chi-square test was used to assess the association between the dependent variable and the independent categorical variables and the Student t test for quantitative. It was also conducted a further multiple analysis out using Poisson regression with robust variance between the outcome "presence of impact" and the independent variables that showed p <0.20. It was used for all the statistical tests a significance level of 5%. Among the adolescents surveyed...

Renewable energy production takes on many forms; wind farms and their turbines are but one. Turbines are a unique dynamic infrastructure within the landscape, which signifies a change in social attitude towards sustainable developments. The clarity and simplicity of the turbines’ function (wind blows, blades turn, turbine spins and electrical power is generated) enforces the benign qualities that wind farms possess. However there are implications associated with the compatibility of turbines to landscape visual character and conservation. The environmental impacts associated with wind turbines include noise, shadow flicker, bird strikes and electromagnetic interference with radio and television signals. However, research suggests the major issue facing planning and development approval is on a social level, with visual pollution being the dominant public criticism. Wind farms must be located where consistent strong winds permeate to generate maximum efficiency. The efficiency of output is dependent on clear exposure to the prevailing wind, which normally implies ridgelines and escarpments which are both visually dominant topographical locations. The Australian Wind Energy Association (AUSWEA) has established guidelines confirming that smooth hilltops are the most preferred topography for airflow...

Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert (the Lower Lakes) are a set of large, shallow, fluvial lakes at the downstream end of the Murray-Darling Basin. The lakes host a number of threatened freshwater fish species; are an important nesting habitat for waterbirds; the source of water for a local irrigated agriculture economy; support a substantial fishery; and provide substantial recreational and aesthetic value to South Australia. Together with the Coorong, an estuarine-hypersaline coastal lagoon, the Lower Lakes were declared a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention due to the abundant and diverse ecological communities within the region. From September 2001 until the end of this study (April 2008) the Murray-Darling Basin experienced a severe rainfall deficiency, the second driest seven-year period in its recorded history (MDBC 2008). This combined with the over-allocation of water within the Murray-Darling Basin and presence of the barrages separating the Lower Lakes from the Coorong, has resulted in a dramatic reduction in inflows to the Lower Lakes and rapid water level drawdown. From August 2006 to August 2008, water levels fell from 0.75 m AHD to -0.5 m AHD. This is well below the previous historical low of 0.1 m AHD in April 1968 (MDBC 2008). This report summarises three limnological studies that were conducted during the drawdown period. The overall purpose of the project was to gain a better understanding of nutrient cycling in the lakes and how it is impacted by changes in water level. The three studies were: 1) A spatially extensive water quality monitoring program...

In this paper, we present a computational model capable to predict the viewer perception of car advertisements videos by using a set of low-level video descriptors. Our research goal relies on the hypothesis that these descriptors could reflect the aesthetic value of the videos and, in turn, their viewers' perception. To that effect, and as a novel approach to this problem, we automatically annotate our video corpus, downloaded from YouTube, by applying an unsupervised clustering algorithm to the retrieved metadata linked to the viewers' assessments of the videos. In this regard, a regular k-means algorithm is applied as partitioning method with k ranging from 2 to 5 clusters, modeling different satisfaction levels or classes. On the other hand, available metadata is categorized into two different types based on the profile of the viewers of the videos: metadata based on explicit and implicit opinion respectively. These two types of metadata are first individually tested and then combined together resulting in three different models or strategies that are thoroughly analyzed. Typical feature selection techniques are used over the implemented video descriptors as a pre-processing step in the classification of viewer perception, where several different classifiers have been considered as part of the experimental setup. Evaluation results show that the proposed video descriptors are clearly indicative of the subjective perception of viewers regardless of the implemented strategy and the number of classes considered. The strategy based on explicit opinion metadata clearly outperforms the implicit one in terms of classification accuracy. Finally...

The intensive development of tourism in the Gulf of Aqaba presents both an opportunity and a dilemma for Egypt. Intensive tourism, if left unmanaged, can inflict irreversible damage on coral reef and desert ecosystems and curtail the area's economic potential. Together with current projections for a rapid expansion of the tourism base in the Aqaba coast, degradation from mounting recreational activities give rise to serious concerns about the sustainability of tourism development in the region. The challenge is to plan for economic development within a sound environmental framework. Implementing the Gulf Of Aqaba Environmental Action Plan (GAEAP) would protect marine resources, including coral reefs and fisheries, and conserve the aesthetic attributes of the Gulf environment and waters upon which the tourist industry depends. This action plan comprises activities in nine categories: institutional strengthening, enforcement of legal and regulatory framework at the South Sinai Governorate level, management of marine pollution...

Objective. To compare the quality of resulting scar at 6 weeks after total thyroidectomy with the use of the tissue adhesive octyl-cyanoacrylate or subcuticular absorbable suture for the closure of cervicotomy. Material and Methods. There are 50 patients undergoing a cervicotomy for total thyroidectomy. Twenty-five patients were randomly assigned to closure with tissue adhesive and 25 with subcuticular absorbable suture. At week 6 the scar was evaluated by blinded assessors with the Italian version of POSAS questionnaire, a validated wound scale composed of an observer's and a patient's subscale. Results. Assessment of scar appearance showed a statistically significant difference (p = 0. 038) in favor of subcuticular suture with respect to tissue adhesive on observer's assessment. The difference on patients' self-assessment was not significant. A multivariate analysis of six qualitative features of scars showed a significant influence on assessment for hyperpigmentation and relief of scar. The Italian version of POSAS proved to be reliable. Conclusion. Though tissue adhesive represents a valid method of skin closure, subcuticular absorbable suture provides a better aesthetic outcome in small cervical incisions in the early phase after thyroid surgery.

Digital portrait photographs are everywhere, and while the number of face pictures keeps growing, not much work has been done to on automatic portrait beauty assessment. In this paper, we design a specific framework to automatically evaluate the beauty of digital portraits. To this end, we procure a large dataset of face images annotated not only with aesthetic scores but also with information about the traits of the subject portrayed. We design a set of visual features based on portrait photography literature, and extensively analyze their relation with portrait beauty, exposing interesting findings about what makes a portrait beautiful. We find that the beauty of a portrait is linked to its artistic value, and independent from age, race and gender of the subject. We also show that a classifier trained with our features to separate beautiful portraits from non-beautiful portraits outperforms generic aesthetic classifiers.; Comment: FG 2015, 8 pages

Aesthetic image analysis is the study and assessment of the aesthetic properties of images. Current computational approaches to aesthetic image analysis either provide accurate or interpretable results. To obtain both accuracy and interpretability by humans, we advocate the use of learned and nameable visual attributes as mid-level features. For this purpose, we propose to discover and learn the visual appearance of attributes automatically, using a recently introduced database, called AVA, which contains more than 250,000 images together with their aesthetic scores and textual comments given by photography enthusiasts. We provide a detailed analysis of these annotations as well as the context in which they were given. We then describe how these three key components of AVA - images, scores, and comments - can be effectively leveraged to learn visual attributes. Lastly, we show that these learned attributes can be successfully used in three applications: aesthetic quality prediction, image tagging and retrieval.; Comment: IJCV, 2014

The reception and assessment of literary translations is conditioned by various social, intellectual and aesthetic factors. From the sociological perspective of Pierre Bourdieu, the present article studies different aspects of this process in a corpus of critical reviews of works of literature in translation. As technology becomes increasingly more sophisticated, means and demand for digital communication are increasing. The geographical expansion of the business world has made communication alternatives critical to working together more effectively. Face to face meetings may not be possible or the most cost and time efficient approach. Also, there is a move towards working at home, telecommuting, by using electronic communication for interaction (Fitzgerald 1993). Thus, electronic correspondence is becoming essential and we are witnessing a move towards higher performance and potential for communication alternatives. Knowing the options and their appropriateness is a competitive advantage. "In a information society dominated by computers and communications, value is increased by knowledge, as well as by the speed of movement of that knowledge." (Fitzgerald 1994). Graphic designers rely on strong communication with their clients. Clients' needs must be expressed to the designer and designer's solutions must be communicated for approval. This process is repeated at several stages: initial, revision, and final. Traditionally, when face to face meetings were not feasible, comprehensives were mailed to the client. With the current move towards electronic communication...
