Responsive media are media that can sense and react intelligently to factors like presentation conditions or equipment, audience identity or profile, direct interaction, history or anticipation of involvement, and so on. The emergence of modern computational devices and communication networks, with their power to manipulate media signals and objects, has spurred the development of new forms of responsive media. But a lack of a broad framework for understanding the characteristics of and motivations for these media has resulted in computer-based design tools that do not mirror the character of our projects and working practices and, in turn, compromise our ability to communicate effectively with these media. This research strives to build such a framework and use it as a foundation for a suite of three new tools that better reflect the multi-layered, multi-sensory, and multi-person nature of responsive media. Aiming to rethink the principles underlying one of the most primary building blocks in the design process, the centerpiece of this suite, Isis, is a new programming language tailored to serve as a basis for responsive media.; (cont.) Research focused on developing an innovative, yet simple automobile platform that maximizes its efficiency through shared convenience. Work was initially put into studying both current vehicles and urban architecture, in order to understand how their relationship could advance contextual awareness, social interaction, and efficient allocation of resources. Through support of General Motors and Gehry Partners, a multidisciplinary team of research students collaborated to produce dozens of design iterations of the urban vehicle. The models were designed through parametric computer aided design program, Catia®, and rapidly prototyped through the use of three-dimensional printers, Stratasys® and Z-corp®. Further studies of the designs lead to the development of a concept vehicle, "City-Car" - a convenient, efficient, and chic addition to public and private transportation in the city. City-Car is an adaptive shared vehicle that provides a fun driving experience in dense areas. Multiple design iterations of the City-Car were created to operate in a shared vehicle system. The Flex City-Car is a battery-powered dual motored vehicle able to reposition its rear powertrains to occupy a quarter less space when parked and 44-percent less individual net space when linearly stacked compared to its footprint while driving. Computers and sensors are more and more often embedded into everyday objects, woven into garments, "painted" on architecture or deployed directly into the environment. They monitor the environment, process the information and extract knowledge that their designed and programmers hope will be interesting. As the number and variety of these sensors and their connections increase, so does the complexity of the networks in which they operate. Deployment, management, and repair become difficult to perform manually. It is, then, particularly appealing to design a software architecture that can achieve the necessary organizational structures without requiring human intervention. This thesis proposes a network architecture, called SMPL, for the design and development of collaboration-oriented, distributed applications over the Internet. The goal of SMPL is to enable the development of applications that easily integrate the capabilities of different types of computing resources, software platforms, and data repositories across the Internet transcending the level of a single device. SMPL proposes a new abstraction of the Internet as a network composed of services, resources, and capabilities instead of just machines. The SMPL architecture distributes resources through a peer-to-peer network of service providers. Whenever we use computers to interact with media, our experience is that of direct control, and the goal of our interactions is either artifact-production (the editor paradigm) or passive exploration (the browser paradigm). This thesis proposes an alternative: a model of media interaction based on the ideas of non-idiomatic improvisation that encourages active exploration of media and its structures. We argue that in order to facilitate this kind of exploration, (1) computational tools must actively participate in the creative process and (2) the interaction framework must allow structural exploration of media. This leads to our main claim: improvisation should be considered a valid and appropriate paradigm for media interaction. To this extent, we present a Cognitive Model of Improvisational action (CMIA) that integrates element-centric and process-centric (structural) modes of control into a single framework for media exploration. This model allows participants to switch their attention between compositional elements and structural processes.; (cont.) As digital entertainment applications evolve, there is a need for new kinds of platforms that can support sociable media interactions for everyday consumers. This thesis demonstrates an extensible method and sensing framework for real-time tracking of multiple objects on an interactive table with an embedded display. This tabletop platform can support many different applications, and is designed to overcome the commercial obstacles of previous single purpose systems. The approach is supported through the design and implementation of an acoustic-based sensing system that provides a means for managing large numbers of objects and applications across multiple platform instances. The design requires precise and dynamic positioning of multiple objects in order to enable real-time multi-user interactions with media applications. Technical analysis shows the approach l:o be robust, scalable to various sizes, and accurate to a within a few millimeters of tolerance. A qualitative user evaluation of the table within a real-world setting illustrates its usability in the consumer entertainment space for digital media browsing and game play. Informal exchanges between friends, family and acquaintances play a crucial role in the dissemination of news and opinion. These casual interactions are embedded in a network of communication that spans our society, allowing information to spread from any one person to another via some set of intermediary ties. Weblogs have recently emerged as a part of our media ecology and incidentally engender this process of media contagion; because weblog authors are tied by social networks of readership, contagious media events happen frequently, and in a form that is immediately measurable. The generally accepted notion of media diffusion is that it occurs through two channels: externally, as applied by a constant force such as the mass media, and internally through socio-structural means. Sitting between our traditional notions of mass media and the public, weblogs problematize this classical theory of mass media influence. This thesis is concerned with the notion of fluency in human-robot interaction (HRI), exploring cognitive mechanisms for robotic agents that would enable them to overcome the stop-and-go rigidity present in much of HRI to date. We define fluency as the ethereal yet manifest quality existent when two agents perform together at high level of coordination and adaptation, in particular when they are well-accustomed to the task and to each other. Based on mounting psychological and neurological evidence, we argue that one of the keys to this goal is the adaptation of an embodied approach to robot cognition. We show how central ideas from this psychological school are applicable to robot cognition and present a cognitive architecture making use of perceptual symbols, simulation, and perception-action networks. In addition, we demonstrate that anticipation of perceptual input, and in particular of the actions of others, are an important ingredient of fluent joint action. To that end, we show results from an experiment studying the effects of anticipatory action on fluency and teamwork, and use these results to suggest benchmark metrics for fluency. The major promise of computational technology for learning is in making discovery and acquisition of knowledge accessible to a wider range of people. The protean expressive and constructive nature of computational technology facilitates more powerful and effective learning methodologies. Enabling multiple forms of representation through computational approaches to thinking about various phenomena not only potentially opens new domains of knowledge, but also permits a re-structuration of domains by rethinking content and activity. This thesis provides an exemplar of this potential through children learning about Balance Control in Dynamic Systems (BCDS), which adds a particular value given that BCDS is considered too complex for young learners. A Balance Control Microworld was created to help learners think about how to program physical robots to perform balancing acts, such as balancing an inverted pendulum, based on the observations of their own body motions. A Spatial Computing Paradigm (SCP) was developed to allow learners to carry out various control operations using familiar 2D properties of on-screen objects. Central coherence accounts of autism have shown dysfunction in the processing of local versus global information that may be the source of symptoms in social behavior, communication and repetitive behavior. An application was developed to measure cognitive abilities in central coherence tasks as part of a music composition task. The application was evaluated in collaboration with the Spotlight Program, an interdisciplinary social pragmatics program for children with Asperger's syndrome. This research indicates that it is possible to embed cognitive measure as part of a novel music application. About 21 million people in the United States [roughly 8%] have a basic motor skill inability [13], many stemming not from atrophy, but an improper mapping from the brain to the motor system. Devices exist today to aid people in rebuilding their motor system mappings, but do so in bulky, and inconvenient ways, since many of the users have adequate muscle strength, but the inability to control it properly. Hundreds of millions of people in the world participate in the arts, most of which involve motion of some sort. Typically, to become able to properly perform/paint/dance/etc, training is necessary. We learn from visual and auditory feedback, and sometimes, from the touch of a teacher. This research aims to improve the efficacy of such training with robotic touch, to enable people to become better, faster. This research proposes an augmented sensory feedback system - a lightweight comfortable wearable device that utilizes the communication channel of direct touch on the body, to give real-time feedback to the wearer about their performance in motor skill tasks. Using vibrotactile signals to indicate joint error in a user's motion, we enable a user to wear a full-body suit that provides subtle cues for the brain, as they perform a variety of motor skill tasks.; (cont.) This thesis has developed an affective agent research platform that advances the architecture of relational agents and intelligent tutoring systems. The system realizes non-invasive multimodal real-time sensing of elements of user's affective state and couples this ability with an agent capable of supporting learners by engaging in real-time responsive expressivity. The agent mirrors several non-verbal behaviors believed to influence persuasion, liking, and social rapport, and responds to frustration with empathetic or task-support dialogue. Pilot studies involved 60 participants, ages 10-14 years-old, and led to an experiment involving 76 participants, ages 11-13 years-old, engaging in the Towers of Hanoi activity. The system (data collection, architecture, character interaction, and activity presentation) was iteratively tested and refined, and two "mirroring" conditions were developed: "sensor driven non-verbal interactions" and "pre-recorded non-verbal interactions". The development and training of the classifier algorithms showed the ability to predict frustration/help seeking behavior with 79% accuracy across a pilot group of 24 participants.; (cont.) People's daily lives are impacted by lots of dynamic environmental information, such as weather and traffic. Though most of this information is available on the Internet, there is no easy way for someone to access it while in a mobile state. More importantly, people do not have a constant need for this kind of information unless there is a significant change that may impact their current or future activities. This thesis creates a distributed multi-agent architecture that uses GPS-enabled cell phones to build a mobile service development framework. The goal of this framework is to build mobile services to deliver timely changes in environmental information that could impact a user's current or future activities. A weather warning system for bicycle riders is built based on this framework to demonstrate its utility. This weather warning system tracks bicycle riders as well as current weather patterns; it warns riders about the risk of getting caught in the rain if it estimates that riders are heading into areas where rain is predicted, or if they are moving too far from shelter to be able to reach it before the rain starts. With this system, bike riders can make more informed decisions about which routes to take to avoid encounters with nasty weather conditions. This thesis is based on the interplay between people coming to understand their own minds and coming to understand the minds of others. This interplay is pursued through an examination of the rich and intricate relationship between perceptions and concepts. Working with a number of teenagers from the South Boston community, I have developed a workshop format that allows teenagers to consider the very nature of perspective-taking through the thoughtful design of experimental video works. Adolescents use media-rich design activities to delineate how perceptions relate to conceptions and how this relationship can form a different perspective. In short, teenagers become producers of media, not merely consumers of it, through an approach to the problems of perception. I explain the social, cognitive, and material basis for this work, and unpack an extended case of these elements in use. The hope is that by engaging students in a study of what it might mean to perceive and conceive of something, they may come to realize that perspective-taking is not only possible but is necessary for understanding the complexities of the subjective world. In order to understand and create human-level intelligence I have developed the Polyscheme cognitive architecture to build systems that combine several representation and inference schemes when they think. Polyscheme is based on three principles. First, different (aspects of) situations that intelligent systems must deal with are best modeled with different schemes for representing knowledge and making inferences. Polyscheme includes several "specialists" such that each models a particular aspect of the world with its own (possibly unique) representation and inference techniques. Second, specialists must communicate with other specialists frequently so that each specialist uses the most complete, accurate and relevant information when it deals with a situation. Specialists in Polyscheme communicate and combine information by simultaneously concentrating on the same focus of attention. Finally, because information about some aspects of a situation is more important than information about others and because the order that specialists focus on those aspects is important, a system of focused specialists must have mechanisms that decide where to focus. Polyscheme's specialists, especially the reflective specialist, guide the focus of attention and thereby implement inference schemes using an "attraction" mechanism to specify their preferred foci. Polyscheme enables multiple inference techniques to be integrated in dealing with a situation because each inference technique can be implemented with one or more focus schemes. With a new way of thinking about organizing sensor networks, we demonstrate that we can more easily deploy and program these networks to solve a variety of different problems. We describe sensor networks that can analyze and actuate distributed phenomena without a central coordinator. Previous implementations of sensor networks have approached the problem from the perspective of centralized reporting of distributed events. By contrast, we create a system that allows users to infer the global state from within the sensor network itself, rather than by accessing an outside, central middleware layer. This is accomplished via dynamic creation of clusters of nodes based on application or intent, rather than proximity. The data collected and returned by these clusters is returned directly to the inquirer at his current location. By creating this Distributed-in/Distributed-out (DiDo) system that bypasses a middleware layer, our networks have the principal advantage of being easily configurable and deployable. We show that a system with this structure can solve path problems in a random graph. This thesis presents a mathematical framework for real-time sensor-driven stochastic modeling of story and user-story interaction, which I call sto(ry)chastics. Almost all sensor-driven interactive entertainment, art, and architecture installations today rely on one-to-one mappings between content and participant's actions to tell a story. These mappings chain small subsets of scripted content, and do not attempt to understand the public's intention or desires during interaction, and therefore are rigid, ad hoc, prone to error, and lack depth in communication of meaning and expressive power. Sto(ry)chastics uses graphical probabilistic modeling of story fragments and participant input, gathered from sensors, to tell a story to the user, as a function of people's estimated intentions and desires during interaction. Using a Bayesian network approach for combined modeling of users, sensors, and story, sto(ry)chastics, as opposed to traditional systems based on one- to-one mappings, is flexible, reconfigurable, adaptive, context-sensitive, robust, accessible, and able to explain its choices. To illustrate sto(ry)chastics, this thesis describes the museum wearable, which orchestrates an audiovisual narration as a function of the visitor's interests and physical path in the museum. The museum wearable is a lightweight and small computer that people carry inside a shoulder pack. Life is filled with stories. Modern technologies enable us to document and share life events with various kinds of media, such as photos, videos, etc. But people still find it time-consuming to select and arrange media fragments to create coherent and engaging narratives. This thesis proposes a novel storytelling system called Storied Navigation, which lets users assemble a sequence of video clips based on their roles in telling a story, rather than solely by explicit start and end times. Storied Navigation uses textual annotations expressed in unconstrained natural language, using parsing and Commonsense reasoning to deduce possible connections between the narrative intent of the storyteller, and descriptions of events and characters in the video.
