We extend the standard price discovery analysis to estimate the information share of dual-class shares across domestic and foreign markets. By examining both common and preferred shares, we aim to extract information not only about the fundamental value of the rm, but also about the dual-class premium. In particular, our interest lies on the price discovery mechanism regulating the prices of common and preferred shares in the BM&FBovespa as well as the prices of their ADR counterparts in the NYSE and in the Arca platform. However, in the presence of contemporaneous correlation between the innovations, the standard information share measure depends heavily on the ordering we attribute to prices in the system. To remain agnostic about which are the leading share class and market, one could for instance compute some weighted average information share across all possible orderings. This is extremely inconvenient given that we are dealing with 2 share prices in Brazil, 4 share prices in the US, plus the exchange rate (and hence over 5,000 permutations!). We thus develop a novel methodology to carry out price discovery analyses that does not impose any ex-ante assumption about which share class or trading platform conveys more information about shocks in the fundamental price. As such...

These areas should be negotiated through a profit-share bidding auction. Motivated by this new rules, we present a model of share bidding auction under affiliation...

As companhias selecionadas foram: Bradesco S.A, Gerdau S.A, ITAUSA, Petrobras S.A, Usiminas S.A e Vale S.A.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Finance from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics; The importance of the Earnings per Share (EPS) has been increasing in the last decade and its disclosures have become more common. Still, there are no studies about EPS financial reporting in Portugal. Being so, this project offers a first analysis of EPS financial reporting in Portugal, reviewing the regulation, providing evidence on the current practices and presenting recommendations to improve them. It concludes that not all of the Portuguese companies are in compliance with regulation (IAS 33) regarding EPS; they only voluntarily disclose what is more favorable and the crisis of 2010 had a great impact on EPS amounts.

In 1995, a pioneering MD-PhD program was initiated in Brazil for the training of medical scientists in experimental sciences at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The program’s aim was achieved with respect to publication of theses in the form of papers with international visibility and also in terms of fostering the scientific careers of the graduates. The expansion of this type of program is one of the strategies for improving the preparation of biomedical researchers in Brazil. A noteworthy absence of interest in carrying out clinical research limits the ability of young Brazilian physicians to solve biomedical problems. To understand the students’ views of science, we used qualitative and quantitative triangulation methods, as well as participant observation to evaluate the students’ concepts of science and common sense. Subjective aspects were clearly less evident in their concepts of science. There was a strong concern about "methodology", "truth" and "usefulness". "Intuition", "creativity" and "curiosity" were the least mentioned thematic categories. Students recognized the value of intuition when it appeared as an explicit option but they did not refer to it spontaneously. Common sense was associated with "consensus"...

The possibility that a murine monoclonal antibody (mAb 12) to Rye grass pollen allergen LolpIV and LolpIV-specific antibodies in the sera of grass allergic individuals share a common idiotope (Id) was investigated. It was first established that mAb 12 and human IgE antibodies recognized the same (or similar) epitope(s) on LolpIV; i.e. mAb 12 could inhibit, to the extent of 35-60%, the binding of 125I-LolpIV to the human IgE antibodies present in the sera of grass pollen-allergic individuals. Subsequently, a rabbit anti-Id antiserum was produced against mAb 12 and rendered Id-specific by appropriate immune absorptions, and its IgG antibody fraction was isolated (Rb-aId). The specificity of Rb-aId was demonstrated by the fact that the antibodies bound only to mAb 12 and not to any other murine monoclonal antibody tested. Observations that Rb-aId inhibited the binding of 125I-LolpIV to mAb 12 indicated that the Id determinants recognized on mAb 12 were located at or near the antibody-combining sites. The Rb-aId also bound specifically to affinity-purified human anti-LolpIV antibodies isolated from human sera, but not to affinity-purified human anti-tetanus toxoid antibodies. This indicated that the human anti-LolpIV antibodies share a cross-reactive Id. The binding of Rb-aId to human anti-LolpIV antibody could also be inhibited by mAb 12. Therefore...

Since the unexpected discovery of the antipsychotic activity of chlorpromazine, a variety of therapeutic agents have been developed for the treatment of schizophrenia. Despite differences in their activities at various neurotransmitter systems, all clinically effective antipsychotics share the ability to interact with D2 class dopamine receptors (D2R). D2R mediate their physiological effects via both G protein-dependent and independent (β-arrestin 2-dependent) signaling, but the role of these D2R-mediated signaling events in the actions of antipsychotics remains unclear. We demonstrate here that while different classes of antipsychotics have complex pharmacological profiles at G protein-dependent D2R long isoform (D2LR) signaling, they share the common property of antagonizing dopamine-mediated interaction of D2LR with β-arrestin 2. Using two cellular assays based on a bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) approach, we demonstrate that a series of antipsychotics including haloperidol, clozapine, aripiprazole, chlorpromazine, quetiapine, olanzapine, risperidone, and ziprasidone all potently antagonize the β-arrestin 2 recruitment to D2LR induced by quinpirole. However, these antipsychotics have various effects on D2LR mediated Gi/o protein activation ranging from inverse to partial agonists and antagonists with highly variable efficacies and potencies at quinpirole-induced cAMP inhibition. These results suggest that the different classes of clinically effective antipsychotics share a common molecular mechanism involving inhibition of D2LR/β-arrestin 2 mediated signaling. Thus...

A growing push to implement catch share fishery programs is based partly on the recognition that they may provide stronger incentives for ecological stewardship than conventional fisheries management. Using data on population status, quota compliance, discard rates, use of habitat-damaging gear, and landings for 15 catch share programs in North America, I tested the hypothesis that catch share systems lead to improved ecological stewardship and status of exploited populations. Impacts of catch share programs were measured through comparisons of fisheries with catch shares to fisheries without catch shares or by comparing fisheries before and after catch shares were implemented. The average levels of most indicators were unaffected by catch share implementation: only discard rate, which declined significantly in catch share fisheries, showed a significant response. However, catch share fisheries were distinguished by markedly reduced interannual variability in all indicators, being statistically significant for exploitation rate, landings, discard rate, and the ratio of catch to catch quotas. These impacts of catch shares were common between nations and ocean basins and were independent of the number of years that catch share programs had been in place. These findings suggest that for the indicators examined...

Compared with DR and DQ, knowledge of the binding repertoires and specificities of HLA-DP alleles is somewhat limited. However, a growing body of literature has indicated the importance of DP-restricted responses in the context of cancer, allergy, and infectious disease. In the current study, we developed high-throughput binding assays for the five most common HLA-DPB1 alleles in the general worldwide population. Using these assays on a comprehensive panel of single-substitution analogs and large peptide libraries, we derived novel detailed binding motifs for DPB1*0101 and DPB1*0501. We also derived more detailed quantitative motifs for DPB1*0201, DPB1*0401, and DPB1*0402, which were previously characterized on the basis of sets of eluted ligands and/or limited sets of substituted peptides. Unexpectedly, all five DP molecules, originally selected only on the basis of their frequency in human populations, were found to share largely overlapping peptide motifs. Testing panels of known DP epitopes and a panel of peptides spanning a set of Phleum pratense Ags revealed that these molecules also share largely overlapping peptide-binding repertoires. This demonstrates that a previously hypothesized DP supertype extends far beyond what was originally envisioned and includes at least three additional very common DP specificities. Taken together...

Background: One challenge in reusing clinical data stored in electronic medical records is that these data are heterogenous. Clinical Natural Language Processing (NLP) plays an important role in transforming information in clinical text to a standard representation that is comparable and interoperable. Information may be processed and shared when a type system specifies the allowable data structures. Therefore, we aim to define a common type system for clinical NLP that enables interoperability between structured and unstructured data generated in different clinical settings. Results: We describe a common type system for clinical NLP that has an end target of deep semantics based on Clinical Element Models (CEMs), thus interoperating with structured data and accommodating diverse NLP approaches. The type system has been implemented in UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Architecture) and is fully functional in a popular open-source clinical NLP system, cTAKES (clinical Text Analysis and Knowledge Extraction System) versions 2.0 and later. Conclusions: We have created a type system that targets deep semantics, thereby allowing for NLP systems to encapsulate knowledge from text and share it alongside heterogenous clinical data sources. Rather than surface semantics that are typically the end product of NLP algorithms...

The maintenance of quiet stance requires the activation of muscles bilaterally. The soleus muscles in each leg share a common function in standing; that is, each muscle acts to control antero-posterior (AP) sway on its own side. We sought to determine the extent to which oscillations in motor unit discharge were related in motor unit pairs of the soleus muscles during postural and voluntary isometric tasks, both within and between legs. Subjects stood quietly for 5 min or performed a voluntary isometric plantarflexion contraction in a seated position. During the postural tasks, the excursions of AP sway between legs were highly correlated (ρ = 0.86 ± 0.06). The strength of common modulation of motor unit discharge rates was assessed using time- and frequency-domain analyses. The time-domain common drive analysis revealed that the strongest correlation in motor unit discharge modulation occurred in the postural task with unilateral pairs (ρ = 0.71 ± 0.13) being more strongly correlated than bilateral pairs (ρ = 0.50 ± 0.16). Common modulation of motor unit discharge was lowest for the voluntary tasks, with ρ = 0.38 ± 0.11 and 0.16 ± 0.08 for unilateral and bilateral pairs, respectively. Similarly, the frequency-domain coherence analysis demonstrated an identical ordering effect...

The difficulties with using nonhuman primate species such as rhesus macaques and baboons have led us to investigate the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) as an alternative preclinical model for transplantation research. This requires reliable methods of detecting alloreactivity between donor and recipient pairs, particularly if colonies are inbred and share just a few common alleles for leucocyte antigens. We firstly identified marmoset major histocompatibility complex (MHC) Class II DRB genes (Caja-DRB*W1201, Caja-DRB1*03, Caja-DRB*W16) using sequence-based typing techniques. Genomic DNA (n= 49) was extracted from whole blood or spleen tissue. Exon 2 of target genes was amplified by PCR using primers specific for known marmoset alleles, and then sequenced using ABI PRISM® Big Dye Terminator technology and Assign sequence analysis software. DRB*W1201 was universally present. Eight DRB*W16 alleles and five DRB1*03 alleles were identified in this colony. We also identified two previously unreported DRB*W16 alleles, and confirmed inheritance of these alleles within several sibling groups. Subsequently, we investigated whether matching at MHC Class II DRB loci alone could predict alloreactivity, as assessed in vitro by two-way mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLRs). Fully DRB-matched...

The objective of this paper is to model all the N components of a macro or business variable. Our contribution concerns cases with a large number (hundreds) of components, for which multivariate approaches are not feasible. We extend in several directions the pairwise approach originally proposed by Espasa and Mayo-Burgos (2013) and study its statistical properties. The pairwise approach consists on performing common features tests between the N(N-1)/2 pairs of series that exist in the aggregate. Once this is done, groups of series that share common features can be formed. Next, all the components are forecast using single equation models that include the restrictions derived by the common features. In this paper we focus on discovering groups of components that share single common trends. We study analytically the asymptotic properties of the procedure. We also carry out a comparison with a DFM alternative; results indicate that the pairwise approach dominates in many empirically relevant situations. A clear advantage of the pairwise approach is that it does not need common features to be pervasive.; Both authors gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Spanish Government project ECO2012-32401.; This paper is a more elaborated version of a part of a previous paper distributed as "The pairwise approach a large set of disaggregates with common trends".

Monte Carlo evidence on the small samples performance is provided and a small samples correction procedure designed. A comparison with a DFM alternative is also carried out, and results indicate that the pairwise approach dominates in many empirically relevant situations. A relevant advantage of the pairwise approach is that it does not need common features to be pervasive. A strategy for dealing with outliers and breaks in the context of the pairwise procedure is designed and its properties studied by Monte Carlo. Results indicate that the treatment of these observations may considerably improve the procedure's performance when series are 'contaminated'.

This report assesses Azerbaijan's corporate governance framework-its laws and regulations, enforcement and common business practices. The report notes recent improvements in corporate governance regulation, makes recommendations of policy and institutional strengthening, and provides a benchmark against which to measure corporate governance in Azerbaijan. Note that the report covers only publicly-traded companies, although many of the recommendations may also be applicable to closely-held companies and state-owned enterprises. The report identifies three steps for improvement of corporate governance in Azerbaijan. They are: 1. Institution building, including strengthening of enforcement and independence of the Statistical Common Services; 2. Legal reform, specifically taking stock of recent legal changes and assuring their smooth interaction and functioning; and 3. Focus on several key areas for enforcement: related party transactions; reporting and transparency, including ownership disclosure and annual reporting; supervisory boards and other company governance organs; continued enforcement of bank corporate governance rules; and awareness raising.

The Education Trust (Ed Trust) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote academic achievement for all students at all levels nationwide. One of Ed Trust’s six main advocacy agenda items is support for college- and career-ready education standards in all states. As part of its commitment, Ed Trust supports state adoption of the Common Core State Standards (Common Core) to raise the bar for student achievement across the nation. Policy Questions (1) Which states can The Education Trust identify as leaders in providing instructional materials to support teachers in the transition to the Common Core State Standards? (2) What characteristics of the leader states’ efforts in providing Common Core-aligned instructional materials can promising states use as they develop Common Core-aligned curricula? Identifying Leader States Of the 45 states which have adopted the Common Core, only some of them have developed Common Core-aligned instructional materials for teachers at the state level. Among these participating states, the threshold criterion for a “leader” state in this study is development of Common Core-aligned instructional materials and making the materials available to teachers in their states. To determine which states have made the most progress in providing instructional materials for teachers...
