Context-awareness has been regarded as an important feature for mobile services. However, only a few services are sensible to context and the features that are context-aware are still limited. Composition of Web services has received much interest in business-to-business or enterprise application, but not so much interest in business-to- consumer applications. This paper presents iCas, a novel architecture that enables the creation of context-aware services on the fly, and discusses its main components. We compare our approach with similar systems and point out the main differences and advantages. To explore context-awareness to support service composition, iCas uses SeCoM, a semantic model to represent context. The main parts of this model are explained as well the advantages of using a semantic model to represent context. We also describe the use of our approach in an university campus to provide pedagogical features and assist the socio-pedagogical interaction of various types of users.

Using topic hierarchies with privileged information to improve context-aware recommender systems

Recommender systems are designed to assist individuals to identify items of interest in a set of options. A context-aware recommender system makes recommendations by incorporating available contextual information into the recommendation process. One of the major challenges in context-aware recommender systems research is the lack of automatic methods to obtain contextual information for these systems. Considering this scenario, in this paper, we propose to use contextual information from topic hierarchies to improve the performance of context-aware recommender systems. Three different types of topic hierarchies are constructed by using the LUPI-based Incremental Hierarchical Clustering method: a topic hierarchy using only a traditional bag-of-words, a second topic hierarchy using a bag-of-words of named entities and a third topic hierarchy using both information.We evaluate the contextual information in four context-aware recommender systems. A Computação Ubíqua está revolucionando a interação do ser-humano com os dispositivos computacionais ao disponibilizar tecnologias pouco intrusivas ao cotidiano das pessoas. A Computação Ciente de Contexto, um dos temas de pesquisa em Computação Ubíqua, tem contribuído para a construção de aplicações capazes de customizar-se e adaptar-se às necessidades do usuário sem a intervenção explícita deste. Suportar o desenvolvimento de aplicações Cientes de Contexto é um dos desafios da Computação Ubíqua. Desenvolvido no mesmo grupo de pesquisa que este trabalho está inserido, o Serviço Web Context Kernel, gerencia informações de contexto e explora as especificações e tecnologias da Web como plataforma de intercâmbio para a informação contextual. O trabalho aqui reportado teve como objetivo investigar a utilização de Serviços Web por meio do emprego da infra-estrutura Context Kernel na integração de aplicações em cenários de trabalho colaborativo e de aprendizado eletrônico. Como resultado, foi elaborado um conjunto de lições aprendidas provenientes do estudo e do emprego das especificações para Serviços Web. O processo de digitalização da TV em diversos países do mundo tem contribuído para o aumento do volume de programas de TV, o que gera uma sobrecarga de informação. Consequentemente, o usuário está enfrentando dificuldade para encontrar os programas de TV favoritos dentre as várias opções disponíveis. Diante deste cenário, os sistemas de recomendação destacam-se como uma possível solução. Tais sistemas são capazes de filtrar itens relevantes de acordo com as preferências do usuário ou de um grupo de usuários que possuem perfis similares. Entretanto, em diversas recomendações o interesse do usuário pode depender do seu contexto. Assim, torna-se importante estender as abordagens tradicionais de recomendação personalizada por meio da exploração do contexto do usuário, o que poderá melhorar a qualidade das recomendações. A Educação Ubíqua, tema de pesquisa desta tese, tem como objetivo relacionar os aprendizes com o ambiente em seu entorno, formando uma rede virtual e real de pessoas, objetos e situações, auxiliando para uma aprendizagem contínua, contextualizada e significativa. A consciência do contexto do aprendiz constitui-se do elemento fundamental neste tipo de educação. A partir das pesquisas realizadas, concluiu-se que, atualmente, os ambientes virtuais de suporte à Educação Ubíqua possuem um contexto de atuação específico ou localizado, além de um ambiente computacional próprio. Desta forma, o problema de pesquisa desta tese consiste em identificar os elementos básicos necessários para auxiliar uma aprendizagem independente de lugar, de tempo, do contexto em que ela ocorre e do ambiente computacional de suporte. A partir desses aspectos, esta tese aborda a hipótese de que o desenvolvimento de um ambiente educacional ubíquo deve ser apoiado por mecanismos computacionais pró-ativos, providos por um ambiente de suporte à ubiqüidade, que possibilite perceber o contexto do aprendiz e o uso de diversas tecnologias de acesso. Location is a primary cue in many context-aware computing systems, and is often represented as a global coordinate, room number, or Euclidean distance various landmarks. A user?s concept of location, however, is often defined in terms of regions in which common activities occur. We show how to partition a space into such regions based on patterns of observed user location and motion. These regions, which we call activity zones, represent regions of similar user activity, and can be used to trigger application actions, retrieve information based on previous context, and present information to users. We suggest that context-aware applications can benefit from a location representation learned from observing users. We describe an implementation of our system and present two example applications whose behavior is controlled by users? entry, exit, and presence in the zones.

In spite of the great evolution and dissemination of mobile devices and embedded sensors, development of ubiquitous applications is still a complex task mainly due to the great diversity of context information and the abundance of sensor technologies. In this scenario, middleware systems are responsible mediating communication between contextaware applications and sensors. This responsibility envolves many services such as sensor communication protocols, asynchronous communication, context information reasoning. In spite of their importance for mobile context-aware applications, the development of middleware platforms for context provisioning is also a very complex task, specially in terms of sensor module integration to these platforms. This happens due to many factors, such as: i) huge complexity to develop sensor modules; ii) dificulties of reuse of sensor modules; and iii) sensor module life cycle management. Such applications use physical conditions from sensors together with human factors such as social setting as cues for adapting in behavior during use. Given this adapting behavior, context-aware applications take a significantly more active role than traditional applications. Through the active role, context-aware applications have the ability to mediate the creation of additional meaning. It is this mediation ability which provides the three research objectives of this thesis: [1] to develop a mediation framework that captures the tension between design time intentions and use time perceptions, [2] to use this mediation framework when identifying mediation roles that context-aware applications may take, and [3] to use these mediation roles for illustrating design implications on context-aware applications in complex environments. Context-aware services often need to adapt their behaviors according to physical situations and user preferences. However, most of the existing approaches to developing context-aware services can only do adaptation based on globally defined adaptation logic without considering the personalized context-aware adaptation needs of a specific user. In this paper, we propose a novel model-driven approach called PerCAS to developing and executing personalized context-aware services that are able to adapt to a specific user’s adaptation needs at runtime. To enable dynamic and personalized context-aware adaptation, user-specific adaptation logic is encoded as rules, which are then weaved into a base process with an aspect-oriented mechanism. At runtime, the active user-specific rule set will be switched depending on who is using/invoking the service. A model-driven platform has been implemented to support the development and maintenance of personalized context-aware services from specification, design, to deployment and execution. The widespread use of new mobile technology implementing wireless communications enables a new type of advanced applications to access information services on the Internet. In order to provide services which meet the user needs through intelligent information retrieval, the system must sense and interpret the user environment and the communication context. Though context-awareness is vital to provide services adapted to the user preferences, it cannot be useful if such services are difficult to access. The development of spoken dialogue systems for these applications facilitates interaction in natural language with the environment which is also benefited from contextual information. The web has become the largest repository of multimedia information and its convergence with telecommunications is now bringing the benefits of web technology to hand-held devices. To optimize data access using these devices and provide services which meet the user needs through intelligent information retrieval, the system must sense and interpret the user environment and the communication context. In addition, natural spoken conversation with handheld devices makes possible the use of these applications in environments in which the use of GUI interfaces is not effective, provides a more natural human-computer interaction, and facilitates access to the web for people with visual or motor disabilities, allowing their integration and the elimination of barriers to Internet access. In this paper, we present an architecture for the design of context-aware systems that use speech to access web services. Our contribution focuses specifically on the use of context information to improve the effectiveness of providing web services by using a spoken dialog system for the user-system interaction. Sensor fusion is a mature but very active research field, included in the more general discipline of information fusion. It studies how to combine data coming from different sensors, in such way that the resulting information is better in some sense –more complete, accurate or stable– than any of the original sources used individually. Context is defined as everything that constraints or affects the process of solving a problem, without being part of the problem or the solution itself. Over the last years, the scientific community has shown a remarkable interest in the potential of exploiting this context information for building smarter systems that can make a better use of the available information. Traditional sensor fusion systems are based in fixed processing schemes over a predefined set of sensors, where both the employed algorithms and domain are assumed to remain unchanged over time. Nowadays, affordable mobile and embedded systems have a high sensory, computational and communication capabilities, making them a perfect base for building sensor fusion applications. The global mobile application market is booming in all directions and business giants, viz. Google and Apple, have acknowledged the huge expansion in their Application Market and App Store. There is a demand though for a system that can elevate the momentum of context-aware mobile applications, where an application’s behavior is customized according to context information. This thesis proposes a context-aware system that provides mobile Applications as a Service (AppaaS). AppaaS handles various context information including location information, user profile, device profile, user ratings, and current time to provision the best relevant mobile application to such a context. AppaaS also supports state preservation, where application-specific data that is relevant to a user is stored for future reference. Our prototype demonstrates a seamless system performance with respect to finding relevant applications to a specific context and controlling the applications functions according the users requirements and access privileges. In an idea generation meeting the emotional context-aware is correlated the with participants’ performance. To achieve good results in idea generation sessions it is important that participants maintain a positive emotional state. In this paper we will present an agent-based idea generation meeting using an emotional context-aware model that includes several mechanisms, namely: the analysis and evaluation of events, emotion-based process and recommendation selection. In order to analyse and test the benefits of these mechanisms, we also created a simulated scenario where agents generate ideas and are affected by context-aware situations. The simulation reveals that these mechanisms can increase the participants’ performance using some techniques. This study shows how the use of recommendation mechanisms can maximize meeting results in some situations.

Pervasive environments involve the interaction of users with the objects that surround them and also other participants. In this way, pervasive communities can lead the user to participate beyond traditional pervasive spaces, enabling the cooperation among groups taking into account not only individual interests, but also the collective and social context. In this study, the authors explore the potential of using context-aware information in CSCW application in order to support collaboration in pervasive environments.
