Modern times call organizations to have an active role in the social arena, through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The objective of this research was to test the hypothesis that there is a positive relation between social performance and economic performance, and if there is a positive correlation between social performance and financial-economic performance. To test these theories a measure of social performance, based on the Green Book of Commission of the European Community, was used in a group of nineteen Portuguese top companies, listed on the PSI 20 index, through a period of five years, since 2005 to 2009. A clusters analysis was applied to group companies by their social performance and to compare and correlate their economic performance. Results indicate that companies that had a better social performance are not the ones who had a better economic performance, and suggest that the middle path might provide a good relation CSR-Economic performance, as a basis to a sustainable development.

The main aim of this thesis is to analyze the economic performance of nations in the 2000s on the perspective of external competitiveness.

The objective of this volume is to document the patterns of business regulation across the world and review their impact on aggregate economic performance. The volume adopts a comparative cross-regional perspective, with particular attention to Latin America. The research reported here focuses on establishing the analytical and empirical links between microeconomic regulatory policies on the one hand, and aggregate productivity, growth, and volatility on the other. Thus, the volume adds to a novel but increasingly influential line of policy-relevant research that seeks to understand macroeconomic phenomena from a microeconomic perspective. Such literature is still fairly scarce in the case of industrial countries, and virtually in its infancy for developing countries. To achieve this end, the volume combines a variety of methodological approaches-analytical and empirical, micro and macroeconomic, single- and cross-country-to an extent limited mainly by the availability of suitable data. Following this overview...

This paper incorporates morality -- defined as lower utility from consuming goods obtained through appropriative rather than productive activities -- into a simple static general equilibrium model in which agents choose whether to be producers or appropriators. The authors analyze the relationship between the correlation between morality and human capital on the one hand, and aggregate economic performance on the other. They show that there is a main effect that tends to cause this relationship to be positive, and that there can be secondary effects that can either rein-force or oppose (or even overbalance) the main effect. They test the theory using the World Val-ues Survey as a source of proxies for morality. Using their preferred proxy, they find evidence that higher within-country correlation between morality and ability, holding constant the levels of morality and ability, increases per-capita income levels. Under the preferred specification, a one-standard-deviation increase in the correlation between morality and ability raises the log of per-capita income by about one-fourth of a standard deviation...

The authors contribute to both the finance-growth literature and the community banking literature by testing the effects of the relative health of community banks on economic growth, and investigating potential transmission mechanisms for these effects using data from 1993-2000 on 49 nations. Data from both industrial and developing nations suggest that greater market shares and efficiency ranks of small, private, domestically-owned banks are associated with better economic performance, and that the marginal benefits of higher shares are greater when the banks are more efficient. Only mixed support is found for hypothesized transmission mechanisms through improved financing for small and medium enterprises or greater overall bank credit flows. Data from developing nations are also consistent with favorable economic effects of foreign-owned banks, but unfavorable effects from state-owned banks.

This paper considers the relationship between institutional quality, educational outcomes, and economic performance. More specifically, it seeks to establish the linkages by which government effectiveness affects per capita income, via its mediating effect on human capital formation. The empirical approach adopts a two-stage strategy that estimates national-level educational production functions that include government effectiveness as a covariate, and then uses these estimates as instruments for human capital in cross-country regressions of per capita income. The results identify a significant and positive effect of human capital on per capita income levels, and partially resolves the inconsistency between macro- and micro-level studies of the effect of human capital on income. The results also remain robust to alternative specifications, extension to a panel setting, subsamples of the data, and fully endogenous institutions.

The fertility declines and increased longevity associated with the final phase of the global demographic transition have led to accelerated ageing of populations in developed countries and in several advanced developing countries. This paper introduces a global demographic model from which emerge the implications of these changes for population sizes, age distributions and gender compositions. From these results are inferred corresponding changes in labour force size and in patterns of consumption and saving which are then analysed using an augmented GTAP-Dynamic, in which regional households are disaggregated into four age groups and two genders. Demographic change is found to act most significantly through variations across age-gender groups in both labour force participation and savings behaviour, with secondary effects arising from variations in consumption preferences across these groups. As policies to control ageing in the developed countries, increased labour force participation by the aged and replacement migration are examined and shown to have very considerable effects on global economic performance.; no

Important findings of recent studies based on a macroeconomic perspective include the need to take actions aimed at further increasing the region's integration into the global economy while at the same time deepening Latin America's relatively shallow financial markets. This study complements that body of knowledge by taking an alternative microeconomic, firm-level approach to explain productivity and economic performance. In particular, instead of the usual cross country econometric methodologies used to uncover the determinants of per capita GDP growth, this study focuses on the analysis of the investment climate determinants of productivity and wages at the firm level. Six main findings emerge from this analysis: first, the governance agenda, encompassing the strengthening of the rule of the law and the improvement of institutions and regulatory frameworks, emerges as a key policy priority for improving firm performance in Latin America. Second, expanding access to credit also appears as a relevant policy priority. Third...

Infrastructure's interactions with and importance to the economies of developing countries have not been fully understood. This is evident in the Bank's approach to sector work in infrastructure and in its structural adjustment programs, which emphasize adjusting prices to the detriment of a country's infrastructure. Still, the available evidence indicates that in poorer countries with inadequate infrastructure, imperfect markets, and a lack of capital, the aggregate supply elasticity of agriculture to non-price factors, such as public goods and services, is substantially greater than the response to prices. Research and policy analysis are needed to understand the way in which infrastructure affects economic performance and to examine how this should be taken into account in our policy interventions, both in infrastructure sectors and in overall macroeconomic management. The sub-Saharan African Transport Program (SSATP) is trying to help governments in sub-Saharan Africa improve their transport policies and programs and enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the transport sector. It helps governments of sub-Saharan Africa define much needed policy reforms and assists with their implementation. This document is the first SSATP publication which addresses the relationship between transport and economic performance and considers the implications of these linkages for sector policy. It reviews the literature on the linkages between transport and economic performance.

Organizations are inserted in a demanding and competitive market, and in this context, they seek strategic alternatives in order to obtain good results, and one of the challenges is to make the employees act so as to align their personal goals to those of the organization, as the agency theory of Jensen and Meckling approach. In this sense, as a way to motivate and get the commitment of employees, organizations provide numerous benefits such as profit sharing, post-employment benefits, stock-based compensation among others. The aim of this research is to evaluate perceptive effects on economic performance of listed companies in Brazil Index IBrX-50 Bovespa arising from the type and amount of incentives granted to employees between the years 2006 to 2010. The methodology consisted in collecting the explanatory notes and the consolidated statements of these companies and applying statistical tests to compare the mean performance according to types and amounts of benefits offered. The results demonstrated that in just a few years, companies that offered more types of benefits have highest rates of profitability. It was concluded that, although organizations have increased the amount of benefits granted during the years surveyed...

A common view is that the performance of the UK economy between 1997 and 2010 under Labour was very weak and that the current economic problems are a consequence of poor policies in this period. In this report, we analyse the historical performance of the UK economy since 1997 compared with other major advanced economies and with performance prior to 1997, notably the years of Conservative government, 1979-97. We focus on measures of business performance, especially productivity growth. This is a key economic indicator as in the long run, productivity determines material wellbeing - wages and consumption. Productivity determines the size of the 'economic pie' available to the citizens of a country.

From 1983, Australia operated an Incomes Policy - the Accord. Senator Peter Cook, Australian Industrial Relations Minister, gave a Centre for Economic Performance-sponsored public lecture on the Accord in June 1991. In view of the considerable worldwide interest in the Accord, Senator Cook''s lecture is reprinted as a Centre for Economic Performance Occasional Paper to reach a wider audience. Peter Cook looks at the ways in which the Accord process facilitated a major assault on the impediments to economic growth and social equity in Australia in the 1980s, and argues that economic management should be achieved by consensus policies supported by social wage and industrial policy measures rather than economic and social confrontation.

Linking pay to performance is something employers increasingly seek to achieve. This was once seen as an objective which could only be met in the private sector. That is no longer true. In the 1990s the British public services have experienced a revolution which has attracted the interest and concern of public service managers and unions around the world. The days when government officials marched in step up incremental pay scales are gone. Virtually all civil servants are now subject to new forms of performance management, or performance pay. This approach now extends to many other areas of the public services. But are these new systems of financial reward as effective as their creators had hoped? This is one of the questions which prompted the substantial programme of research carried out by David Marsden and Stephen French under the auspices of the Industrial Relations programme of the Centre for Economic Performance (with financial assistance from the Anglo-German Foundation). It is the most extensive study of its kind, looking at performance pay systems in the Inland Revenue and the Employment Service; within the NHS; and in the teaching profession.

During periods of strong economic growth, migration is and has always been important for filling gaps in the labour market. On balance, the evidence for the UK labour market suggests that fears about the consequences of rising immigration have been exaggerated. It is hard to find evidence of much displacement of UK workers or lower wages, on average. Immigrants, especially in recent years, tend to be younger and better educated than the UK-born and are less likely to be unemployed. They certainly do not receive preferential access to housing. But there have been some effects. The less skilled may have experienced greater downward pressure on wages and greater competition for jobs than others, but these effects still appear to have been modest. Unfortunately we do not know much about whether the effects of immigration are different in downturns. We also need to understand more about how capital and sectoral shifts in demand respond to immigration over the longer run. Future migration trends will, as ever, depend on relative economic performance and opportunity. But we still need to know more about the effects of rising immigration beyond the labour market in areas like prices, housing, health, crime and welfare.
