Uma das medidas de eficiência dos mercados futuros refere-se à sua ligação com o mercado spot (mercado à vista). Este trabalho teve por objetivo verificar se existe uma ligação estatística entre o mercado spot e futuro de boi gordo negociado na Bolsa de Mercadorias e Futuros (BM&F) e entre o mercado spot e futuro de soja negociados na BM&F e na Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT). Além disso, procedeu-se também o cálculo de um indicador de eficiência para o contrato futuro de boi gordo da BM&F. Para o boi gordo, os dados utilizados foram as séries de preços futuros dos contratos com vencimento nos meses de janeiro a novembro/2005 e para os contratos de soja os vencimentos escolhidos foram de março a setembro/2005, além de novembro/2005. No caso do mercado de boi gordo, foram encontradas evidências de co-integração entre os preços spot e os contratos com vencimento em março, abril, setembro, outubro e novembro/2005. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the genetic and environmental factors affecting records of longissimus muscle area (LMA) and back fat thickness (BF) obtained between the 12th and 13th ribs, and rump fat thickness (RF) between the hook and pin bones, measured by real-time ultrasound in Nelore cattle. Also, weight records of 22,778 animals born from 1998 to 2003, in ten farms across six Brazilian states were used. Carcass traits as measured by ultrasound of the live animal were recorded from 2002 to 2004 in 2590 males and females with ages varying from 450 to 599 days. Fixed models including farm, year and season of birth, sex and type of feed effects, and the covariates age of dam (AOD) and age of animal at measurement were used to study the effect of environmental factors on these traits. The genetic parameters for LMA, BF and RF were estimated with two and three-trait animal models with 120-day weights using a restricted maximum likelihood method. All environmental effects significantly affected carcass traits, with the exception of year of birth for BF and RF and AOD for LMA. The heritability estimates for LMA, BF and RF were 0.35, 0.51 and 0.39, respectively. Standard errors obtained in one-trait analyses were from 0.07 to 0.09. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi verificar as relações entre os preços do boi vivo praticados na Argentina e no Brasil de sorte a que tanto empresas como governos possam ter medidas mais precisas do grau em que devem levar em conta os efeitos da evolução da produção e do comércio interno e externo da Argentina sobre o mercado interno do Brasil. Para tanto, foi elaborado um modelo de Auto-Regressão Vetorial com Correção de Erro - VEC que considerou as variáveis preço do boi no Brasil (US$/kg), preço do boi na Argentina (US$/kg); taxa de câmbio euro/dólar e preço da carne bovina no atacado da União Européia (US$/kg). Os resultados indicaram que efeito de choques nos preços do boi na Argentina em relação preço do Brasil é muito pequeno. Já o efeito de choques de preços do boi no Brasil sobre o preço na Argentina, embora pequeno, é positivo e superior ao impacto que os preços argentinos possuem sobre o boi brasileiro. Após os dois primeiros meses, um choque de 1% no preço no Brasil, levaria os preços argentinos a subir cerca de 0,25% indicando que possíveis aumentos de preços do boi no Brasil sejam repassados aos preços de exportação, o que causaria um aumento da demanda por carne argentina em mercados concorrentes...

Mais do que uma ferramenta para gestão do risco de preços para produtores e consumidores, os contratos futuros agropecuários tem se tornado uma importante opção de investimento principalmente em períodos de crise quando os riscos no mercado de ações aumentam. No Brasil, a participação de investidores no mercado futuro agropecuário ainda é pequena, mas há um considerável potencial de crescimento, posto que o país é um importante player no mercado internacional das principais commodities agropecuárias como café, soja, milho, açúcar, etanol e carne. Neste contexto, será analisada neste trabalho a relação entre os retornos resultantes de posições compradas em contratos futuros agropecuários negociados na BM&FBOVESPA e o retorno apresentado pelo mercado de ações, representado pelo Índice Bovespa com atenção especial aos períodos de crise. Para isso, utilizou-se uma metodologia similar a desenvolvida por Baur e Lucey (2009) buscando identificar em qual categoria porto seguro, hedge ou diversificador - os dois principais contratos futuros negociados na BM&FBOVESPA - boi gordo e café arábica se encaixam. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido para avaliar as correlações entre as características de carcaça avaliadas por ultrassonografia em diferentes tempos de confinamento em bovinos Nelore castrados e não castrados. Foram avaliados 242 bovinos durante os anos de 2009, 2010 e 2011. Em cada ano, metade dos animais foram castrados após a desmama, com aproximadamente 12 meses de idade e mantidos a pasto, juntamente com os não castrados até o início do confinamento. Os animais foram alimentados com dieta de alto concentrado (85%) e confinados por período de 56 a 140 dias. A cada intervalo de aproximadamente 28 dias os animais foram pesados e avaliados por ultrassonografia para determinação de área de olho de lombo (AOLU) e espessura de gordura subcutânea (EGSU) na região entre a 12ª e 13ª costelas e espessura de gordura subcutânea na picanha (EGPU). No início do confinamento foi avaliada a altura da garupa dos animais determinação do escore de frame. A condição sexual dos animais influenciou a maioria das características de carcaça avaliadas em todos os períodos. O peso vivo inicial apresentou altas correlações com os demais pesos avaliados durante o experimento. O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência do mercado futuro como forma de mitigação do risco associado aos preços do boi gordo para as praças de Araçatuba (SP) e Goiânia (GO). Calculou-se a efetividade do hedge por meio da razão ótima de hedge para as praças estudadas no período de 2002 a 2013, utilizando três tipos de modelos econométricos. No primeiro modelo, as variâncias e covariâncias condicionais foram tratadas como constantes e os preços spot e futuro não foram considerados correlacionados no tempo; no segundo modelo, relaxou-se a hipótese de que os preços spot e futuro não são correlacionados no tempo, portanto, adicionou-se um vetor de correção de erros ao modelo; e, no terceiro modelo, assumiu-se que as variâncias e covariâncias condicionais não são constantes. Os resultados obtidos por esses métodos indicaram que o uso do contrato futuro de boi gordo diminuiu a variância dos retornos no período estudado, de modo que as estimativas dinâmicas foram inferiores na efetividade em diminuir o risco de preço diante das estimativas obtidas por modelos estáticos. Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection is a major cause of production losses in cattle. This study was carried out to evaluate the natural resistance against nematode infection in Crioulo Lageano and crossbred Angus male calves. Crioulo Lageano is a local cattle breed in the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. Ten weaned calves of each breed were grazed together on pasture and naturally infected with nematodes between July 2009 and December 2010. Once every 28 days, we collected fecal and blood samples for parasitological and immunological tests, as well as recording body weights. After 19 samplings, all animals were slaughtered for quantification and identification of GINs. We found that the animals had been infected with the following nematode species, in decreasing order by the mean number of specimens: Trichostrongylus axei, Cooperia punctata, Ostertagia ostertagi, Haemonchus placei, Oesophagostomum radiatum, and Trichuris spp. There were no significant differences between the Crioulo Lageano and crossbred Angus groups in terms of worm burden or nematode fecal egg count, nor in terms of the mean levels of immunoglobulin (G and A) against C. punctata and H. placei antigens, except in IgA mean level in abomasal mucus against H. placei adult worms that was significantly higher in crossbred Angus cattle (p<0.05). In order to determine the best type of rabies vaccine to use as a booster, 78 serological samples from singly vaccinated cattle were analyzed by counterimmunoelectrophoresis technique. The animals were divided into several groups, received the first vaccine dose with modified live virus vaccine (ERA strain) and were revaccinated with inactivated virus or modified live virus vaccines. Boosters were given at 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks following first vaccination. Results showed high titres in the cases of booster with inactivated vaccine. In all cases, however, detectable antibody titres declined quickly.

The objective of this study was to determine the time period that Escherichia coli O157:H7 survives on the hides of cattle. Extensive research has been conducted and is ongoing to identify and develop novel preharvest intervention strategies to reduce the presence of E. coli O157:H7 on live cattle and subsequent transfer to processed carcasses. If a reduction of E. coli O157:H7 levels in feces can be achieved through preharvest intervention, it is not known how long it would take for such reductions to be seen on the hide. In the study presented herein, three trials were conducted to follow E. coli O157:H7 hide prevalence over time. For each trial, 36 animals were housed in individual stanchions to minimize or prevent hide contamination events. Through prevalence determination and isolate genotyping with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, survival of E. coli O157:H7 on the hides of live cattle was determined to be short lived, with an approximate duration of 9 days or less. The results of this study suggest that any preharvest interventions that are to be administered at the end of the finishing period will achieve maximum effect in reducing E. coli O157:H7 levels on cattle hides if given 9 days before the cattle are presented for processing. Non-invasive in vivo marbling quantification helps owners to choose the optimum nutritional management for growing cattle and buyers to more precisely evaluate grown cattle at auctions. When using time-domain proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry, it is possible to quantify muscle and fat separately by taking advantage of the difference in the spin–spin relaxation time (T2) between water molecules in muscles and fat molecules, which would contribute to the non-invasive and objective determination of marbling scores. With this in mind, we developed a prototype NMR scanner (4.1 MHz for protons) using an original single-sided magnetic circuit and a plane radio frequency (RF) coil for use in the non-invasive quantification of water and fat in live cattle. The sensed region of the developed scanner is compact and almost cubical (19 × 19 × 16 mm3) while the investigation depth (the distance from the RF coil to the center of the sensed region) has been lengthened to 30 mm, which is sufficient for the in vivo trapezius muscle measurement of live cattle. Measurements of 17 samples of beef meat blocks kept at 39 °C were taken in a laboratory to successfully obtain the calibration lines used to convert the NMR signals into water and fat weight fractions at correlation coefficients in excess of 0.9. Live measurements of weight, height, length, girth, fat depth, stifle- and hip-width were obtained prior to slaughter to develop prediction equations for carcass traits. The animals were boned out after slaughter and comprised 182 steers from the Southern Crossbreeding Program (progeny from Hereford cows crossed with seven sire breeds: Angus, Belgian Blue, Hereford, Jersey, Limousin, South Devon and Wagyu) and 59 steers from the Davies Gene Mapping Project (pure Limousin, pure Jersey and Limousin x Jersey). Stepwise regression was used to indicate the relative importance of variables in each model designed to estimate the percentage of meat, bone and fat from the carcass weight. The meat, bone and fat yields correspond to 70, 19 and 11% of the carcass on weight basis. The prediction equations developed accounted for 93, 87, 74 and 65% of the variation in carcass, meat, bone and fat weight respectively without breed in the model. This study has shown that some carcass traits may be determined accurately from measurements on live animal.

Conformation scores can account for more than 20% of cattle price variation at Australian livestock sales. However, there are limited available references which define genetic factors relating objective live developmental traits to carcass composition. Weaning and post-weaning weight, height, length, girth, muscle (ratio of stifle to hip width) and fat depth of 1202 progeny from mature Hereford cows (637) mated to seven sire breeds (Jersey, Wagyu, Angus, Hereford, South Devon, Limousin and Belgian Blue) were examined for growth and development across ages. Crossbred Wagyu and Jersey were both lighter in weight and smaller in size (height, length and girth) than purebred Hereford and crossbred Angus, South Devon, Limousin and Belgian Blue. Within the five larger crossbreds, there were significant changes in relative weight from weaning to 600 days. Sire breeds differed in fat depth, with Angus being the fattest (9% on average fatter than Hereford and Wagyu), and Jersey 5% less fat than Hereford, followed by South Devon and Limousin (19% lower than Hereford) and Belgian Blue (39% lower than Hereford). A quantitative trait locus (QTL) study was carried out in two countries, recording live animal and carcass composition traits. Back-cross calves (385 heifers and 398 steers) were generated, with Jersey and Limousin breed backgrounds. The New Zealand cattle were reared on pasture to carcass weights averaging 229 kg, whilst the Australian cattle were reared on grass and finished on grain (for at least 180 days) to carcass weights averaging 335 kg. From 11 live animal traits and 31 carcass composition traits respectively, 5 and 22 QTL were detected in combined-sire analyses, which were significant (P < 0.05) on a genome-wise basis. Fourteen significant traits for carcass composition QTL were on chromosome 2 and these were traits associated with muscling and fatness. This chromosome carried a variant myostatin allele (F94L), segregating from the Limousin ancestry. Despite very different cattle management systems between the two countries, the two populations had a large number of QTL in common. Infection of cattle with Neospora caninum may result in abortion or the birth of a congenitally infected calf. Vaccination with live N. caninum protects against experimental infection of cattle and mice, and the naturally attenuated Nc-Nowra strain of N. caninum is of particular interest as a potential vaccine candidate. Vaccination of heifers prior to breeding with live Nc-Nowra tachyzoites by either the subcutaneous or the intravenous route reduced the rate of abortion and the presence of the parasite in calves as determined by PCR and serology after infection of cows with a virulent isolate. Protected fractions were 55.6% to 85.2% depending on the route of vaccination and growth conditions of the vaccine strain, with cryopreserved Nc-Nowra tachyzoites being less effective, with a 25.9% protected fraction. Vaccination appeared to reduce the rate of pregnancy after artificial insemination in some groups compared to nonvaccinated, nonchallenged controls. One animal that was vaccinated but not challenged experienced an abortion, but Nc-Nowra could not be detected in any of the cows in this group or their progeny. The Indonesian cattle ban in 2011 marks a turning point for the live export industry in Australia, with a number of economic and social implications arising from the ban. Australia has exported livestock for over 100 years. Large parts of Northern Australia are solely focused on the trade which employees thousands of workers and generates hundreds of millions of dollars every year. Indonesia is Australia's largest live cattle export destination, importing over 520,000 head in 2010 alone. Australia and Indonesia have developed a complementary trading relationship, which benefits both countries economically and socially. A term used in this report is 'social license'. 'Social license' refers to community trust of business and industry. Over time, there has been a change in public expectations and 'social license' to operate in the livestock export industry away from concerns over the loss of Australian jobs to animal welfare. The Indonesian cattle ban was announced on the 8 of June 2011 after the Four Corners Report, 'A Bloody Business' was aired on the 30 of May 2011. 'A Bloody Business' broadcast graphic images of animal cruelty in a number of abattoirs in Indonesia. The public demonstrated concern about animal welfare in Indonesia following this footage and called on the government to end the cattle trade. The beef cattle producers in the southern zone of the State of Mexico generally do not carry out adequate market planning of their finished steers. In addition, they lack technical and administrative management in their productive units, focused on the use of efficient input, which has prevented them from maximizing their monetary profits. The present investigation was made to estimate the technical (TOL) and economic optimum levels (EOL) of feedlot beef cattle, using two cubic production functions with decreasing marginal yields. One hundred steers of Bos Taurus x Bos indicus were used, with Live Weight at the start of fattening of 290 ± 15 kg, age 21 to 24 months, fattened in feedlots during 93 days consuming a totally mixed diet (Crude protein: 133.33, FDN: 237.44, FDA 114.33 g/kg DM and 2.62 Mcal/kg of DM of metabolizable energy) To estimate both functions (TOL and EOL), weight gain was considered as independent variable. For the first production function, feed intake was taken as independent variable and in the second function, time defined in days. For the first production function the TOL was 475.04 and the EOL was 473.94 kg Live Weight; with a daily feed intake of 12.58 and 12.36 kg/day. Genetic parameters were estimated for body weight at scanning (SCW) and live animal ultrasound measures of rump fat thickness (P8FT), rib fat thickness (RBFT), rib eye-muscle area (REA) and intramuscular fat percentage (IMF) for South African Angus beef cattle. A multiple-trait animal model was used to estimate genetic parameters using the Residual Maximum Likelihood procedure (REML). Ultrasound data was used on 1 122 animals that participated in the South African National Beef Cattle Improvement Scheme. The fixed effects that were significant included contemporary group, sex and age of the animal at scanning. Random effects considered were the direct additive genetic effect and the residual. Heritability estimates were 0.38 ± 0.08, 0.34 ± 0.06, 0.33 ± 0.05, 0.32 ± 0.06 and 0.38 ± 0.06 for SCW, P8FT, RBFT, REA and IMF respectively. Genetic correlation between SCW and REA was high (0.79 ± 0.07). Genetic correlations with SCW were 0.24 ± 0.14 for P8FT, 0.25 ± 0.12 for RBFT and 0.29 ± 0.11 for IMF. Measures of body fat were genetically highly correlated with one another, with correlations ranging from 0.71 to 0.99.
