Separation of microbial cells by flotation recovery is usually carried out in industrial reactors or wastewater treatment systems, which contain a complex mixture of microbial nutrients and excretion products. In the present study, the separation of yeast cells by flotation recovery was carried out using a simple flotation recovery systems containing washed yeast cells resuspended in water in order to elucidate the effects of additives (defined amounts of organic and inorganic acids, ethanol, surfactants and sodium chloride) on the cellular interactions at interfaces (cell/aqueous phase and cell/air bubble). When sodium chloride, organic acids (notably propionic, succinic and acetic acids) and organic surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and Nonidet P40) were added to the flotation recovery system, significant increases in the cell recovery of yeast hydrophobic cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, strain FLT-01) were observed. The association of ethanol to acetic acid solution (a minor by-product of alcoholic fermentation) in the flotation recovery system, containing washed cells of strain FLT-01 resuspended in water, leading to an increased flotation recovery at pH 5.5. Thus, the association among products of the cellular metabolism (e.g....

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of exercise mode on the blood lactate removal during recovery of high-intensity exercise. Nine male individuals performed the following tests in order to determine the blood lactate removal: Running - 2x200 m, the subjects ran at their maximum capacity, and rested 2 min between each bout. Swimming - 2x50 m, the subjects swam at their maximum capacity, and rested 2 min between each bout. Each test was realized on different days with three recovery modes: passive (sitting down), swimming, or running. Recovery exercise intensity was corresponding to the aerobic threshold. All recovery activities lasted 30 min. The two forms of active recovery were initiated 2 min after the end of high-intensity exercise and lasted 15 min, and were followed by 13 min of seated rest. After 1,7, 12,17, and 30 min of the end of high-intensity exercise, blood samples (25 mu l) were collected in order to determine the blood lactate concentration. By linear regression, between the logarithm of lactate concentration and its respective time of recovery, the half-time of blood lactate removal (t1/2) was determined. Time of high-intensity exercise and the lactate concentration obtained in the 1(st) min of recovery were not different between running and swimming. Passive recovery (PR) following running (R-PR=25.5+/-4.3 min) showed a t1/2 significantly higher than PR after swimming (S-PR=18.6+/-4.3 min). The t1/2 of the sequences running-running (R-R=13.0 min)...

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between cardiac performance during recovery and the severity of heart failure, as determined by clinical and cardiopulmonary exercise test responses. METHODS: As part of a retrospective cohort study, 46 heart failure patients and 13 normal subjects underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing while cardiac output was measured using a noninvasive device. Cardiac output in recovery was expressed as the slope of a single exponential relationship between cardiac output and time; the recovery-time constant was assessed in relation to indices of cardiac function, along with clinical, functional, and cardiopulmonary exercise responses. RESULTS: The recovery time constant was delayed in patients with heart failure compared with normal subjects (296.7 + 238 vs. 110.1 +27 seconds, p <0.01), and the slope of the decline of cardiac output in recovery was steeper in normal subjects compared with heart failure patients (p,0.001). The slope of the decline in cardiac output recovery was inversely related to peak VO2 (r = -0.72, p<0.001) and directly related to the VE/VCO2 slope (r = 0.57, p,0.001). Heart failure patients with abnormal recovery time constants had lower peak VO2, lower VO2 at the ventilatory threshold...

Anticipating a stressor elicits robust cardiovascular and affective responses. Despite the possibility that recovery from these responses may have implications for physical and mental well-being, little research has examined this issue. In this study, participants either gave a public speech or anticipated giving a speech. Compared with speech-givers, participants who anticipated giving a speech, on average, exhibited similar cardiovascular recovery (decreased heart rate [HR] and increased respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA]), and reported lower negative affect during recovery. Only in the anticipation condition, however, were cardiovascular recovery and affective recovery associated: poor affective recovery predicted incomplete HR recovery and decreased RSA. These are the first data to compare explicitly recovery from anticipation of a stressor with recovery from the stressor itself. These findings suggest that failing to recover from anticipation has unique physiological costs that, in turn, may contribute to mental and physical illness.; Psychology

Acidification of aquatic ecosystems has resulted in severe habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity, regionally and globally. Near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada lakes in Killarney Park were highly acidified by the large-scale Sudbury metal smelter emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, in the 1960s. Fortunately due to the steady decline in emissions, pH increases in these acid-damaged lakes has been observed. This study was undertaken to determine the extent of chemical and biological recovery of lakes in Killarney Park from 1972 to 2011. We assessed the relative importance of environmental variables in shaping the structure of zooplankton communities. Forty-three lakes were sampled to characterize environmental conditions and zooplankton community structure. We compared historic data from a 1972 survey to the data collected in the 2011 survey from the identical lakes; analyses were conducted to compare pH, zooplankton abundance, diversity, richness, and community composition. Chemical recovery was observed with a significant increase in pH from 1972 to 2011. However, our analyses revealed that minimal biological recovery was observed from 1972 to 2011; there was no significant increase in Shannon-Weiner diversity, total abundance or the presence of acid-sensitive zooplankton species...

peer-reviewed; There is much left to learn about the experience of recovery among homeless individuals. Little is known about the process involved in recovery, or about the factors that influence this process (Gillis, Dickerson & Hanson, 2010). Yet, the importance of understanding recovery among homeless individuals cannot be over-stated. Most are not only without stable home, but they also endure biomedical challenges, addiction, and mental illness (Lawless & Corr, 2005). In this thesis, recovery among homeless is examined in four life domains (physical health, substance use, mental health, and community integration). Drawing from the self-determination literature, it is hypothesized that choice and mastery play a role in the process of recovery in each of these domains (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 2002). In turn, taking an ecological perspective on self-determination, it is hypothesized that the values of homeless service providers (key workers) are factors that influence the recovery process. More, specifically, it is anticipated that the extent to which key workers hold ‘recovery’ over ‘traditional’ values will shape the provision of consumer choice, and in turn, mastery and recovery experiences (Farkas, Gagne, Anthony & Chamberlin...

This is a guideline for World Bank task team leaders (TTLs) entrusted with the design and execution of assessments to determine disaster impacts as well as post-disaster needs for recovery, reconstruction, and disaster risk reduction or management. Assessments estimate, first, the short-term government interventions required to initiate recovery and second, the financial requirements to achieve overall post-disaster recovery, reconstruction, and disaster risk management or reduction. The end product of the assessment is a comprehensive program of recovery, reconstruction, and risk management that will guide all actions in a developing country following a disaster. The damage and loss assessment (DaLA) methodology uses objective, quantitative information on the value of destroyed assets and temporary production losses to estimate, first, government interventions for the short term and second, post-disaster financing needs. The DaLA method ensures that the affected government, the United Nations and other international and domestic agencies jointly develop properly estimated and prioritized financial requirements and an accompanying formula that identifies all possible financial sources and modalities. In addition...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors affecting recovery and durability of dialysis-independent renal function following commencement of peritoneal dialysis (PD). DESIGN: Retrospective, observational cohort study of the Australian and New Zealand PD patient population. SETTING: Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant (ANZDATA) Registry. PARTICIPANTS: The study reviewed all patients in Australia and New Zealand who commenced PD for treatment of end-stage renal failure between 15 May 1963 and 31 December 2004. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcomes examined were recovery of dialysis-independent renal function and time from PD commencement to recovery of renal function. A secondary outcome measure was time to renal death (patient death or recommencement of renal replacement therapy) following recovery of dialysis-independent renal function. RESULTS: 24663 patients commenced PD during the study period. Of these, 253 (1%) recovered dialysis-independent renal function. An increased likelihood of recovery was predicted by autoimmune renal disease, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, paraproteinemia, cortical necrosis, renovascular disease, and treatment in New Zealand. A reduced likelihood of recovery was associated with polycystic kidney disease and indigenous race. Analysis of a contemporary subset of 14743 patients in whom complete data were available for body mass index...

The injection of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into oil reservoirs for the purpose of enhancing recovery has been performed for decades. Conversely, the injection of CO₂ into natural gas reservoirs has received very little attention, primarily due to the typically high recovery achievable under primary depletion. This high recovery is however associated with volumetric gas reservoirs only. If the reservoir is in the presence of an active water-drive, recovery can be considerably lowered. This is caused by pressure maintenance and the trapping of gas, rendering a volume of gas immobile. Consequently, any technique that reduces reservoir pressure and/or retards the influx of the aquifer will enable natural gas recovery to be enhanced. In this thesis, the injection of CO₂ has been proposed as a method of retarding the influx of the aquifer. Favourable fluid properties between the injected CO₂ and natural gas also allow the displacement of natural gas towards the production wells with minimal mixing. This thesis investigates the nature of the effects of a number of parameters deemed potentially influential on the displacement of natural gas by CO₂ and the ability to produce and enhance recovery with as low a producing CO₂ concentration as possible. Parameters chosen include uncontrollable reservoir and fluid properties such as permeability...

BACKGROUND: General, health-related quality-of-life questionnaires and recovery-specific questionnaires have been used to measure recovery in surgical patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinimetric properties of 3 recovery instruments and to examine whether recovery-specific instruments are useful. METHODS: The Quality of Recovery-40 (QoR-40), Recovery Index-10 (RI-10), and RAND-36 health survey were used to measure recovery in women undergoing different types of hysterectomy in the first 12 weeks after operation. Construct validity was assessed by testing predefined hypotheses. The changes observed during the postoperative period were used as indicators for responsiveness. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty-one women were included. Response rate and internal consistency were found satisfactory. The highest number of hypotheses used for assessment of construct validity was confirmed in the RI-10. The RI-10 was more responsive compared with the QoR-40 and the RAND-36. CONCLUSIONS: Because construct validity and responsiveness were greatest in the RI-10, we conclude that this short recovery-specific instrument is useful in studies evaluating postoperative recovery. We recommend the use of the RI-10, unless the immediate postoperative days are of interest in which the QoR-40 was valid.; Kirsten B. Kluivers...

Background: The “Quality of Recovery 15” questionnaire is used for the study of quality recovery after anesthesia. The aim of this study was to validate the Portuguese version of “Quality of Recovery 15” questionnaire.Material and Methods: After study approval by the institutional ethics committee, an observational and cohort prospective study was conducted on patients scheduled for elective surgery from June to August 2013. The “Quality of Recovery 15” questionnaire was translated in accordance with available guidelines. The “Quality of Recovery 15” Portuguese version was used before surgery (T0) and 24h postoperatively (T1) on 170 patients. Patients who were unable to give informed consent or had cognitive impairment were excluded. Poor quality of recovery was defined for “Quality of Recovery 15” score at T1 lower than the mean “Quality of Recovery 15”score minus 1 standard deviation. Reliability and observer disagreement was assessed using interclass correlation. Non-parametric tests were used for comparisons. Results: There was a negative correlation between “Quality of Recovery 15” score and time spent in the postanesthesia care(ρ = −0.264, p = 0.004) and length of hospital stay (ρ = −0.274, p = 0.004). Thirty-two patients (19%) had poor quality of recovery. Patients with poor quality of recovery had more frequently diabetes mellitus and hypertension and they were taking antidepressants drugs more frequently. Patients with poor quality of recovery were more frequently submitted to combined anesthesia and less frequently to general anesthesia and locoregional anesthesia (p = 0.008). The questionnaire had a good internal consistency and test–retest reliability was good.Discussion: The Portuguese version of the “Quality of Recovery 15” showed a good correlation with the original. Conclusion: This questionnaire appears to be an accurate and reliable assessment for quality of recovery.; Introdução: O questionário “Quality of Recovery 15” tem sido utilizado para o estudo da qualidade de recuperação após anestesia. This study examines the static recovery behaviour of a clad aluminum alloy manufactured by Novelis FusionTM technology after 72% cold rolling. The clad alloy system studied consisted of a core AA6XXX alloy clad on one side with AA3003. The Recovery at the inter-alloy region is compared with the recovery of core AA6XXX at the same depth from the rolling surface. Sample coupons from the inter-alloy region and core AA6XXX were heated isochronally and isothermally, at different temperatures and times, respectively, to probe the recovery kinetics of the X-ray peak broadening, X-ray macro-texture and micro-hardness from the cold rolled state. The recovery of the {220} and {311} X-ray line profiles were observed between the anneals. A pseudo-Voigt fit function was fit to the profile to obtain the defect related information. Recovery in the peak broadening began by 100°C and correlated to a decrease in the hardness. Sharpening of X-ray profiles during recovery is attributed to the microstructural evolution resulting from preferred release of the stored energy due to dislocation rearrangement and annihilation. Kinetic behaviour of the recovery is measured by observing the evolution of X-ray profiles and hardness during isothermal annealing at two different temperatures. Recovery behaviour in the inter-alloy region is measured to be relatively slower than the recovery of the core AA6XXX after same macroscopic pre-strain. Activation energy for recovery is calculated from the isothermal data to deduce a recovery mechanism. The activation energy calculated in core AA6XXX...

Objectives. The transformation of the mental health system toward a recovery-orientation has created a growing demand for training and education to equip providers with recovery competencies. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a recovery competency framework addressing the most salient components of recovery competencies required for providers practicing in in-patient contexts and to construct and test an education program accordingly. Methods. This thesis involved three phases. Phase One used competency development strategies to develop a recovery competency framework. Data collection methods included a literature review and 15 key informant interviews. In Phase Two, based on the recovery competency framework, a recovery education program was constructed and validated. In Phase Three, a pilot study with a pre-test/post-test design was used to examine the effectiveness of the education program. Twenty-six in-patient providers from three hospitals were recruited. Outcome measures included the Recovery Knowledge Inventory, two investigator-developed questionnaires rating participants’ sense of recovery knowledge application and perceived recovery-related dilemmas, and a group evaluation. Results. Two conceptual models were developed in Phase One to address key tensions and enabling processes for in-patient providers. Derived from these two models...

Background: As the paradigm underlying mental health care slowly shifts from an approach primarily institutional and medical in its orientation toward one more community-based and recovery-oriented, housing needs have come to the forefront. Many people with persistent mental illness accept group home living situations that do not necessarily meet their needs, and do not align with the recovery vision. Research focused on recovery for residents of group homes is all but absent in the literature. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the challenges and opportunities for enabling group homes to increase their capacity to serve as an environment that integrates the recovery vision. Method: Using ethnographic methods, this case study examined the cultural milieu of a group home, how recovery is understood within the setting, and the impact of policies and practices on enacting the recovery vision. By converging multiple strategies for data collection (participant observation, key informant interviews, and document analysis), a multi-level perspective was achieved. The use of the social-ecological model, with its attention to multiple levels of influence, emerged as a highly relevant perspective, without which the recovery vision cannot be realized. Findings: The culture within the home revealed a comfortable atmosphere...
