During the last 25 years, consumer demands for more convenient and varied food products have grown exponentially, together with the need for faster production rates, improved quality and extension in shelf life. These requests together with the severity of the traditional food processing technologies were driving forces for improvements in existing technologies and for the development of new food preservation technologies. Therefore, many technological developments have been directed towards unit operations such as pasteurization, sterilization, cooking and drying, and currently the new technological approaches for food preservation are serious candidates to replace the traditional well-established preservation processes. The aim of this review is to discuss the environmental impact that some of the most promising novel food preservation technologies may represent in terms of energy efficiency, water savings and reduced emissions. The emergence of novel thermal and non-thermal technologies allows producing high quality products with improvements in terms of heating efficiency and, consequently, in energy savings. Most of these technologies are locally clean processes and therefore appear to be more environmentfriendly, having less environmental impact than the traditional ones. Novel processing technologies are increasingly attracting the attention of food processors once they can provide food products with improved quality and a reduced environmental footprint...

Using novel data on patents, trade of equipment goods, and foreign direct investments and insights from the economic literature, the paper seeks to lay out the state of knowledge on the role of innovation and the diffusion of technologies in the greening of global value chains as well as some of the main policy issues. A special emphasis is put on developing countries -- distinguishing emerging economies and least-developed countries -- and on climate-mitigation technologies. Emerging economies are already reasonably well integrated in the global economy. As a consequence, technologies flow in through the imports of capital goods and local investments by multinational enterprises owning technologies. Pushing further technology transfer requires strengthening intellectual property rights, lowering barriers to trade and investments and improving technological absorptive capacities. In contrast, their role in innovation is limited. Standard tools of innovation policy - public research and development, public support to private research and development...

This thesis contributes to our understanding of the moral dimensions of using self-management technologies in general practice. Through qualitative interviews with general practitioners (GPs) and patients with experience in home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) utilization, it examines the influences of HBPM on the general practitioner-patient relationship, patient responsibility for their health and patient autonomy. The first part of this thesis provides an account of the ethical implications of self-management technologies and their related practices for the doctor-patient relationship (DPR), patients’ responsibility for their health and patient autonomy. This account is contrasted with models of the DPR drawn from the bioethics and clinical literature, and with the conceptions of patient responsibility and patient autonomy that inform these models. Self-management technologies and their related practices have the potential to be more ethically robust than ordinary care. They may be able to influence patients’ health agency by promoting their cognitive and emotional abilities and, through this, change health outcomes for chronically-ill patients. However, there are a number of pertinent ethical issues concerning mutual trust in the DPR...

Economic evaluations of alternative electric generating technologies typically rely on comparisons between their expected life-cycle production costs per unit of electricity supplied. The standard lifecycle cost metric utilized is the “levelized cost” per MWh supplied. This paper demonstrates that this metric is inappropriate for comparing intermittent generating technologies like wind and solar with dispatchable generating technologies like nuclear, gas combined cycle, and coal. Levelized cost comparisons are a misleading metric for comparing intermittent and dispatchable generating technologies because they fail to take into account differences in the production profiles of intermittent and dispatchable generating technologies and the associated large variations in the market value of the electricity they supply. Levelized cost comparisons overvalue intermittent generating technologies compared to dispatchable base load generating technologies. These comparisons also typically overvalue wind generating technologies compared to solar generating technologies. Integrating differences in production profiles, the associated variations in the market value of the electricity at the times it is supplied, and the expected life-cycle costs associated with different generating technologies is necessary to provide meaningful economic comparisons between them. This market-based framework also has implications for the appropriate design of procurement auctions created to implement renewable energy procurement mandates...

Within the framework of the New Reform evaluation, this article addresses the issue of the use of Information Technologies and Audiovisual Media in English Language Teaching at the university level, with a particular emphasis on a set of language courses in the ???DEUG??? cycle in the Department of English in El Jadida. A semi-structured interview was used to elicit the students??? and teachers??? attitudes towards these technologies, the ways they use these technologies to serve their teaching goals and learning needs, respectively, and the problems they face in their attempts to implement such technologies. The aim is to find out whether the attitudes teachers and students have and the discourse produced about the perceived effects of these technologies match with the actual practices. The results obtained indicate that both teachers and students have positive attitudes towards these technologies, but they neither frequently nor regularly use them due to factors related to students??? lack of motivation, the unavailability of these technologies and the related infrastructure. We conclude that, despite the little use of such technologies, the positive attitudes that both parties have are a factor that could lead to their frequent...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.; Why individuals adopt or resist technologies is a central question in technology management and energy conservation research. Much academic attention focuses on functional and economic advantages, but perceptions, habits, and norms play a more substantial role and are a particularly strong driver of resistance. Recognizing this, the Marine Corps Expeditionary Energy Office has called for research to better understand how messaging and behavioral factors will influence the shaping of a combat-effective energy posture within the Marine Corps. This research examines how particular individual attributes may affect Marines assessments of energy-efficient technologies. Drawing on a framework developed from the academic literature, this research focuses on the impact of a persons prior conditions, knowledge, and perception of technologies on the decision to adopt, postpone, or resist new technologies. The research produced a summary of extant findings and implications for the United States Marine Corps concerning the typology of United States Marines perceptions and willingness to adopt energy-efficient technologies. The research findings may offer the Marine Corps a clearer understanding of acceptance and resistance drivers...

Renewable energy technologies have been advocated in Fiji's electricity sector on the basis that they improve energy security and serve as a risk-mitigation measure against oil price increases. This follows a decade of significant oil price volatility and historically high oil prices, which negatively affected the oil-dependent electricity sector in Fiji and other Small Island Developing States in the Pacific. This dissertation examines the extent to which renewable technologies can improve energy security in the electricity grid and in rural off-grid areas of Fiji. The main contributions from the research are a novel empirical analysis of generation cost-risk in the electricity grid; an analysis of institutions governing power sector investment; a survey, interview and focus group-based analysis of rural electricity supply; and an evaluation of implications of the research findings for policy. In Fiji's electricity grid, threats to energy security are primarily the result of increased generation costs and their impact on electricity prices. Risk is therefore financial. In this thesis, it is assessed using portfolio theory. Detailed data on costs and variability is fed into a stochastic portfolio model, which is developed to analyse the impact of renewable technologies on generation costs and financial risk in Fiji's electricity grid looking forward to 2025. The analysis demonstrates that renewable technologies can be expected to significantly improve the security of electricity supply through diversification...

The ageing population and the high demand and expectations that the Australian public places on the health system have led to an increased interest in health technologies. Health technologies are crucial for successful modern medical interventions and have significantly improved the treatment standards and number of people treated. Definition of health technologies: Health technologies can include pharmaceuticals, devices, equipment, diagnostic tools, surgical procedures, prostheses and ICT. Australian pharmaceutical assessment and implementation procedures are considered world class due to presence of the PBS which ensures that assessment and implementation are efficiently and meticulously handled. As non-pharmaceutical technologies are not publicly funded in the same way (that is, there is not a national subsidy scheme like the PBS for medical devices) the assessment and implementation procedures are less formalised and regulated which starkly contrasts with a very well organised and funded pharmaceutical process. Health Technology Assessment (HTA): Health technology assessment ideally focuses on three elements: safety, efficacy and economic evaluation. HT.A for non-pharmaceuticals in Australia are handled by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC). The assessment process is broken into three separate processes: Horizon scanning (quick-fire assessment of any possible upcoming technologies without economic evaluation)...

Large-scale production of crop based (first generation) biofuels may not be feasible without adversely affecting global food supply or encroaching on other important land uses. Because alternatives to liquid fossil fuels are important to develop in order to address greenhouse gas mitigation and other energy policy objectives, the potential for increased use of advanced (non-crop, second generation) biofuel production technologies has significant policy relevance. This study reviews the current status of several advanced biofuel technologies. Technically, it would be possible to produce a large portion of transportation fuels using advanced biofuel technologies, specifically those that can be grown using a small portion of the world's land area (for example, microalgae), or those grown on arable lands without affecting food supply (for example, agricultural residues). However, serious technical barriers limit the near-term commercial application of advanced biofuels technologies. Key technical barriers include low conversion efficiency from biomass to fuel...
