This study aimed at learning about the nutritional profile of HIV-positive individuals undergoing antiretroviral therapy and at comparing the performance of nutritional-state indicators. A transversal study was performed on 94 patients attending the Tropical Diseases Outpatient Hospital of Botucatu Medical School (FMB)-UNESP. The body mass index (BMI) and the classification by Papini-Berto (PB) were used to evaluate nutritional state, aiming at detecting malnutrition and obesity. The waist-to-hips ratio (W/HR) and waist circumference (WC) were adopted for identification of abdominal obesity and lipodystrophy. According to BMI, most of the individuals were eutrophic, followed by 30.9% overweight and 6.4% malnourished. By using the PB classification, the frequency of malnourished increased (22.3%). The analysis of the PB classification in relation to BMI indicated that the former presented high sensitivity and good specificity for malnutrition diagnosis, namely 100% and 83%, respectively. The prevalence of abdominal obesity was 7.44% according to WC, and a higher prevalence (38.3%) was observed when taking W/HR into account. There was significant positive association between nutritional diagnosis according to PB and T CD4(+) lymphocyte. The results support the use of PB classification for malnutrition detection as well as that of BMI and W/HR for overweight and fat redistribution.

Sustainable development proves to be an important focus of attention from industries once to modern society the impact of humans on the environment in which it operates is becoming increasingly complex. There is a growing concern for the environment and for the scarcity of available natural resources that are frequently related to the negative consequences brought by the industrial manufacturing system. Therefore, a framework incorporating sustainability indicators is an useful tool for decision making, policy formulation and public communication of economic, environmental and social performance of each organization. The present study aims to conduct a detailed study about the cork industry in Portugal, presenting a proposal of a set of sustainability indicators. These indicators are already being used in the industries in general, and can represent a starting point for the development of indicators that measure sustainability for this sector.

Sustainable building is a concept that began its development nearly two decades ago. With sustainable buildings, it is intended to establish building practices that allow minimizing the buildings impacts, build and manage buildings with an adequate balance between environment, society and economy. However, besides the importance of this concept, its broader implementation is not yet a reality. Several studies have been developed with the goal of understand the reason of these weak implementation. They have concluded that one of the main reasons is because the building stakeholders still consider sustainable practices more expensive, although several studies state the contrary. In order to potentiate the implementation of these practices, a work will be developed in order to perform a cost-benefit analysis of sustainable construction solutions. In order to perform this work, it was necessary, in an initial stage, to define the key indicators that should be considered in order to assess the main aspects of sustainable construction. This paper intends to present the analysis that was performed in order to select these indicators.

Energy has been considered an intrinsic factor to attain Sustainable Development (SD). However, it has not always been viewed, projected or recognized within sustainability’s scope. To address this issue, the use of indicators, namely Energy Indicators for Sustainable Development (EISD), allows to convey to policy-makers multidimensional implications of energy related decision-making. Besides contributing to assess current energy trends at a national level, this tool, contextualized within a country’s economic and energy mix, allows to establish a comparison between different countries. This effectively contributes to identifying common concerns and strategies to overcome barriers towards sustainable development. This paper compares the path to SD in Portugal and Brazil by making use of the EISD framework.

Monitoring indicators permit to follow the state of the landscape heritage quality with the time, being an important tool for the implementation of corrective measures if necessary. The authors have chosen to analyse a concrete case at two different scales of detail and along the time. The case-study concerns an area in Évora surroundings that was object, same years ago, of a detailed analysis. This fact make possible to compare the heritage landscape condition between 2002 and 2010 through the application of monitoring indicators. This work is integrated in a research line that since same years ago are being developed by the authors related with heritage landscape management tools. For the realization of the detailed study it was chosen a conventual kitchen garden including the related hydraulic systems. A broader area surrounding this site was also object of analysis supported mainly by the interpretation of aerial photographs and satellite images, the analysis of maps and land surveying. The main results concern particularly the built heritage values and landscape ecological values. In the first case several degradation situations were detected as consequence mainly of land use pressures and lack of maintenance activity. In the second case the statement of many habitats and corridors were improved as due to a lower human pressure related in part with the extensification or changing of agrarian and forestry systems. This study have showed that monitoring indicators can be a very interesting management tool if applied at different scales according to specific situations and using adequate methods.

A large number of human diseases are related to poor access to water and sewer systems, inadequate solid waste management and deficient storm water drainage. The goal of this study was to formulate environmental sanitation indicators and classify sanitation conditions in specific sewer basins and their respective neighborhoods. The database used contains information on the following sanitation components in these areas: water supply, sewer systems, urban drainage, road pavement, building typology and public cleaning. Data was analyzed using cluster analysis. The key variable of each component was identified, and eight sewer basins and twenty-three neighborhoods were classified into the following categories: good, regular, and poor. The use of environmental sanitation indicators allows decision makers to identify critical areas and define priorities for improving environmental sanitation conditions.

The aim of this work was to study the yeast populations and the main hygienic-sanitary microbial indicators in water buffalo mozzarella produced and commercialized in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Forty-two water buffalo mozzarella samples were purchased from retail outlets in Belo Horizonte. In addition, five samples of consecutive starter cultures, curd before acidification, acidified curd and mozzarella were collected at an industry in the city of Oliveira. Only three of the five water samples analyzed were suitable for consumption according to Brazilian sanitary standards. Four milk samples were highly contaminated with fecal coliforms, and did not meet the minimal hygienic-sanitary standards according to Brazilian regulations. Only one sample of buffalo muzzarela purchased from retail outlets exceeded the limit for coagulase-positive Staphylococcus. Eleven samples showed counts of thermotolerant coliforms higher than5x 10³ CFU.g-1, but still lower than the maximum permitted by the Brazilian laws. Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes were not isolated. Debaryomyces hansenii, Candida lusitaniae and C. parapsilosis were the prevalent yeast species isolated from cheese. Among samples from the production stages, the acidified curd presented the highest numbers of yeasts...

For decades, agricultural price and trade policies in Sub-Saharan Africa hampered farmers’ contributions to economic growth and poverty reduction. This paper draws on a modification of so-called trade restrictiveness indexes to provide theoretically precise partial-equilibrium indicators of the trade and welfare effects of agricultural policy distortions to producer and consumer prices in 19 African countries since 1961. Annual time series estimates are provided not only by country but also, for the region, by commodity and by policy instrument. The findings reveal the considerable extent of policy reform over the past two decades, especially through reducing export taxation; but they also reveal that national policies continue to reduce trade and economic welfare much more in Sub-Saharan Africa than in Asia or Latin America.; This work is a product of a World Bank research project on Distortions to Agricultural Incentives (Project P093895, see www.worldbank.org/agdistortions) which was financially supported by the governments of the Netherlands (BNPP), the United Kingdom (DfID) and Ireland; and by the Australian Research Council (DP0880565).

This report was produced to quantify performance indicators for selected enforced driver behaviours (drink driving, speeding and restraint use) in South Australia for the calendar year 2005. Note that there were considerable problems with data on police enforcement operations and detections in 2005. Consequently, some 2005 data were not available for this report. The level of random breath testing (RBT) in South Australia in 2005 was slightly lower than in 2004. The abolition of the requirement for mobile RBT to be conducted only during ‘prescribed periods’ in mid 2005 was responsible for an increase in the proportion of tests conducted using mobile RBT. The increase in mobile testing led to an increase in the overall detection rate. However, interstate comparisons suggest the level of testing and the proportion of testing using mobile RBT should be increased further in South Australia. The proportion of mobile testing is expected to be more comparable with other states in 2006, when mobile methods would have operated on an unrestricted basis for 12 months. There was a marked increase (34%) in number of hours spent on speed detection in 2005, despite three months of speed camera inactivity. The detection rate (per hour of enforcement and per 1...

This report was produced to quantify performance indicators for selected enforced driver behaviours (drink driving, speeding and restraint use) in South Australia for the calendar year 2006. The level of random breath testing (RBT) in South Australia in 2006 increased by 7 per cent to its highest ever level. The detection rate based on evidentiary testing decreased in 2006 from the previous year but remained at a relatively high level, while the detection rate for screening tests increased to the highest level since recording commenced in 2003. There was an increase in the proportion of tests conducted using mobile RBT, which is due to the operation of unrestricted mobile RBT for the entire year for the first time. Detection rates in South Australia were comparable with those in other states. There was an increase (7%) in the number of hours spent on speed detection in 2006 compared to 2005, partly due to three months of speed camera inactivity in 2005. Apart from an increase in speed camera detections, red light/speed camera detections also increased (by 30%) in 2006, most likely due to the expansion of the program. The detection rate (per hour of enforcement and per 1,000 vehicles passing speed cameras) increased for the first time since 2001 but remained at a relatively low level. No urban speed surveys were conducted in 2006 but rural surveys revealed a decrease in travel speeds on rural roads. The number of restraint offences in 2006 was 13 per cent higher than the number in 2005. Males were charged with more restraint offences and were more likely to be unrestrained in fatal and serious injury crashes than females...

This report was produced to quantify performance indicators for selected enforced driver behaviours (drink driving, drug driving, speeding and restraint use) in South Australia for the calendar year 2007. The level of random breath testing (RBT) in South Australia in 2007 decreased slightly but remained at a relatively high level. The proportion of tests conducted using mobile RBT continued to increase. The detection rate based on evidentiary testing increased in 2007 to the highest level on record, while the detection rate for screening tests decreased. Detection rates in South Australia were comparable with those in other states. Just over 12,000 drug tests were conducted during 2007, the first full year of random drug testing. Relative to other Australian jurisdictions supplying comparative data, South Australia had the highest testing rate per head of population. Around 24 drivers per 1,000 tested were confirmed positive for at least one of the three prescribed drugs with methylamphetamine the most commonly detected drug. Of the fatally injured drivers who were drug tested in 2007, 25 per cent tested positive for illicit drugs. There was a slight decrease in the number of hours spent on speed detection in 2007. Nevertheless, the total number of speed detections increased...

Background Very few quality indicators of care exist for surgical procedures. These may be used to both score the quality of care received, and as a method of improving the quality of care delivered (quality improvement initiatives). Materials and Methods The goal of this study was to develop a set of evidence-based quality indicators by expert consensus for patients undergoing hepatic resection of colorectal metastases to the liver. A Delphi approach was used to develop a set of evidence-based quality indicators for patients undergoing hepatic resection of colorectal metastases to liver. A panel of experts was formed through nomination by members of the Canadian Hepatopancreaticobiliary Society (CHPBS). The Delphi process consisted of three iterations of questionnaires. During each round, the panel members were asked to score the potential indicators and suggest any new indicators. Results A list of 70 potential indicators was generated from the literature, of which 27 achieved consensus for inclusion in the final list of quality indicators. After consolidating similar or redundant indicators, the final list had 18 quality indicators. All of the indicators in the final list were from our original literature search. Conclusions This Delphi process has used the best available evidence...

Background Oral health impairment comprises three conceptual domains; pain, appearance and function. This study sought to: (1) estimate the prevalence of severe oral health impairment as assessed by a summary oral health impairment measure, including aspects of dental pain, dissatisfaction with dental appearance and difficulty eating, among a birth cohort of Indigenous Australian young adults (n = 442, age range 16-20 years); (2) compare prevalence according to demographic, socio-economic, behavioural, dental service utilisation and oral health outcome risk indicators; and (3) ascertain the independent contribution of those risk indicators to severe oral health impairment in this population. Methods Data were from the Aboriginal Birth Cohort (ABC) study, a prospective longitudinal investigation of Aboriginal individuals born 1987-1990 at an Australian regional hospital. Data for this analysis pertained to Wave-3 of the study only. Severe oral health impairment was defined as reported experience of toothache, poor dental appearance and food avoidance in the last 12 months. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate effects of demographic, socio-economic, behavioural, dental service utilisation and clinical oral disease indicators on severe oral health impairment. Effects were quantified as odds ratios (OR). Results The percent of participants with severe oral health impairment was 16.3 (95% CI 12.9-19.7). In the multivariate model...

This is a postprint of an article accepted for publication in Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology copyright (C) [2013] (American Society for Information Science and Technology); Bibliometric mapping and visualization techniques represent one of the main pillars in the field of scientometrics. Traditionally, the main methodologies employed for representing data are Multi-Dimensional Scaling, Principal Component Analysis or Correspondence Analysis. In this paper we aim at presenting a visualization methodology known as Biplot analysis for representing bibliometric and science and technology indicators. A Biplot is a graphical representation of multivariate data, where the elements of a data matrix are represented according to dots and vectors associated with the rows and columns of the matrix. In this paper we explore the possibilities of applying the Biplot analysis in the research policy area. More specifically we will first describe and introduce the reader to this methodology and secondly, we will analyze its strengths and weaknesses through three different study cases: countries, universities and scientific fields. For this, we use a Biplot analysis known as JK-Biplot. Finally we compare the Biplot representation with other multivariate analysis techniques. We conclude that Biplot analysis could be a useful technique in scientometrics when studying multivariate data and an easy-to-read tool for research decision makers.

This paper documents the major trends in financial development in Asia since the early 1990s and the spillovers to firms. It compares Asia with advanced and emerging countries and uses both aggregate and disaggregate indicators. Financial systems in Asia remain less developed than in advanced countries but more developed than in Eastern Europe and Latin America. Bond and stock markets play a larger role and institutional investors have gained importance. Nonetheless, capital-raising activity has not expanded. A few large companies capture most of the issuances. Many secondary markets remain illiquid. The public sector captures a significant share of bond markets. The largest advancements in Asia occurred in China and India. But still in these countries, few large companies use capital markets to expand and grow, becoming much larger than nonuser firms. In sum, Asia's financial systems remain less developed than aggregate measures suggest, with few spillovers to many firms.

This work sought to evaluate the effects of chronic intake of flaxseed upon hematologic parameters and immunological findings on body development of Wistar rats. Female Wistar rats were used after gestation. They were randomly assigned into two groups during lactation period: Control group (CG), fed with casein based diet, made up of 17% protein and flaxseed group (FG), fed with casein based diet with the addition of 25% flaxseed. At weaning, 12 male pups of each group continued to receive the experimental diets of their mothers (with only 10% of protein) until adult age, when they were killed at 250 days of life aiming at blood collection. At 250 days old FG presented significant reduction in body mass (p < 0.000) and higher levels of hemoglobin (p = 0.019) and albumin (p = 0.030) than CG. It was observed smaller percentage of segmented lymphocytes (p = 0.016) in rats from FG and bigger percentage of segmented leucocytes (p = 0.023) when compared to CG. The chronic consumption of flaxseed altered hematologic and immunological indicators in adult Wistar rats. Supplementation with flaxseed seems to be beneficial to maintenance or reduction of body mass.
