Multi-agent system (MAS) is being pointed out as a suitable technology to develop systems that demand flexibility, robustness and re-configurability. Consequently, a significant effort has been noticed to apply MAS to industrial domains exhibiting these characteristics, like manufacturing and smart grids. In spite of the adequacy of the MAS principles to solve the industrial requirements, the truly deployment of MAS for industrial applications is far to be solved. This paper discusses the current challenges for the deployment of MAS in the context of industrial applications, mainly focusing the integration of agents with physical equipment and the ability to run agents directly in industrial or low cost controllers. An experimental MAS solution for a smart grid case study was deployed aiming to support the discussion.

This paper describes the formal modelling and validation of the behaviour of a multi-agent system that integrates the production and quality control processes in a washing machine production line. The modelling, analysis and validation process uses the Petri nets formalism that provides a rigorous and formal language based on its powerful mathematical foundation, supporting the complete verification of the system correctness during the design phase and before to proceed to the deployment phase. The behaviour models of each agent belonging to the system architecture are edited, analysed and simulated in the PnDK framework.

Nowadays, the industry is very demanding in terms of customized high quality products at lower costs. Furthermore, the customers intention of having the product as soon as possible, and companies having the restriction of time, which in this case is a crucial variable, also increases the nal product cost. For this reason, it becomes unacceptable the development of solutions based on centralized implementations, which do not provide robustness, exibility and recon gurability. Therefore, the implementation of multi-agent based solutions ful l the described requirements leading to a more exible, robust and agile system. This work presents the development of an important issue concerning the cooperation between the distributed agents, since one of them only has a partial view of the system. This paper discusses the methodology for the development of a strategic planning tool, and particularly the architectural solution to be adopted, within an integrated ICT solution for the improvement of planning and scheduling systems for the manufacturing of small production lots of complex products. After the analysis of different possible architectural solutions, the paper proposes a hybrid solution that combines existing solvers with the multi-agent system principles. The proposed approach introduces several benefits, namely in terms of flexibility, robustness, and achievement of exploratory alternative solutions, playing interactive what-if simulation supporting decision-makers to take strategic decisions.

This paper describes the implementation of a multi-agent system in a real industrial washing machine production line aiming to integrate process and quality control, allowing the establishment of feedback control loops to support adaptation facing condition changes. For this purpose, the agent-based solution was implemented using the JADE framework, being the shared knowledge structured using a proper ontology, edited and validated in Protégé and posteriorly integrated in the multi-agent system. The solution was intensively tested using historical real production data and it is now being installed in the real production line. The preliminary results confirm the initial expectations in terms of improvement of process performance and product quality.

Esta pesquisa apresenta a implementação de um sistema de proteção digital de distância adaptativo dispondo de um sistema multi-agentes (SMA). Tal SMA trabalhará de forma distribuída, possuindo entidades especialistas (Agentes) inseridas em locais específicos e agindo de forma eficiente na solução de problemas locais. Espera-se pela aplicação deste SMA, atribuir aos relés de distância características desejáveis e difíceis de serem alcançadas pelas técnicas convencionais. Dentre as deficiências observadas nos sistemas de proteção convencionais, tem-se a não sensibilidade à dinâmica dos sistemas elétricos de potência em função das alterações nas condições operacionais. A qualidade do serviço oferecido por Provedores do Serviço de Internet (Internet Service Provider - ISPs) depende diretamente da quantidade de recursos disponíveis naquele momento. Nas últimas décadas, essa qualidade tem sido afetada por frequentes e intensos ataques que consomem tais recursos, como é o caso dos ataques de Negação de Serviço Distribuídos (Distributed Denial of Service - DDoS). Com o objetivo de tornar a rede dos ISPs mais resiliente aos diferentes tipos de ataques DDoS, foram desenvolvidas técnicas contra tais ataques ao longo dos últimos anos. Com o objetivo de contribuir com a melhoria de tais mecanismos, esta dissertação apresenta um método autônomo reativo para detecção e mitigação de ataques DDoS, utilizando um sistema multiagentes (SMA), em redes de ISPs. A propriedade principal do método proposto é identificar padrões de tráfego característicos de um ataque, como um grande fluxo de pacotes direcionados para um serviço ou equipamento, dentro da rede do ISP. A multi-agent system with a percolation approach to simulate the driving pattern of Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV), especially suited to simulate the PEVs behavior on any distribution systems, is presented. This tool intends to complement information about the driving patterns database on systems where that kind of information is not available. So, this paper aims to provide a framework that is able to work with any kind of technology and load generated of PEVs. The service zone is divided into several sub-zones, each subzone is considered as an independent agent identified with corresponding load level, and their relationships with the neighboring zones are represented as network probabilities. A percolation approach is used to characterize the autonomy of the battery of the PVEs to move through the city. The methodology is tested with data from a mid-size city real distribution system. The result shows the sub-area where the battery of PEVs will need to be recharge and gives the planners of distribution systems the necessary input for a medium to long term network planning in a smart grid environment. © 2012 IEEE.

The tendency is to build manufacturing systems with autonomous, intelligent and distributed components that will support reconfiguration and adaptability. The most promising paradigms for the implementation of such systems are multi-agents and service oriented architectures (SOA), mainly over the DPWS (Device Profile for Web Services) implementation which was aimed at devices. An important limitation of most current multi-agent systems is that the management system is not totally distributed. Failure in the agent responsible for the registry can overthrow the entire system. DPWS does not have this limitation, since the management system is totally distributed. This dissertation aims to guarantee the integration of a mobile autonomous robot equipped with many sensors in a multi-agent distributed and georeferenced surveillance system. The integration of a mobile autonomous robot in this system leads to new features that will be available to clients of surveillance system may use. These features may be of two types: using the robot as an agent that will act in the environment or by using the robot as a mobile set of sensors. As an agent in the system, the robot can move to certain locations when alerts are received, in order to acknowledge the underlying events or take to action in order to assist in resolving this event. As a sensor platform in the system, it is possible to access information that is read from the sensors of the robot and access complementary measurements to the ones taken by other sensors in the multi-agent system. To integrate this mobile robot in an effective way it is necessary to extend the current multi-agent system architecture to make the connection between the two systems and to integrate the functionalities provided by the robot into the multi-agent system.

In the past two decades, multi-agent systems (MAS) have emerged as a new paradigm for conceptualizing large and complex distributed software systems. A multi-agent system view provides a natural abstraction for both the structure and the behavior of modern-day software systems. Although there were many conceptual frameworks for using multi-agent systems, there was no well established and widely accepted method for modeling multi-agent systems. This dissertation research addressed the representation and analysis of multi-agent systems based on model-oriented formal methods. The objective was to provide a systematic approach for studying MAS at an early stage of system development to ensure the quality of design. Given that there was no well-defined formal model directly supporting agent-oriented modeling, this study was centered on three main topics: (1) adapting a well-known formal model, predicate transition nets (PrT nets), to support MAS modeling; (2) formulating a modeling methodology to ease the construction of formal MAS models; and (3) developing a technique to support machine analysis of formal MAS models using model checking technology. PrT nets were extended to include the notions of dynamic structure, agent communication and coordination to support agent-oriented modeling. An aspect-oriented technique was developed to address the modularity of agent models and compositionality of incremental analysis. A set of translation rules were defined to systematically translate formal MAS models to concrete models that can be verified through the model checker SPIN (Simple Promela Interpreter). In the present paper, we describes a semi-automated and decision support sensor surveillance architecture used to develop an intelligent sensor surveillance system. The proposed architecture is grouped in three agents layers: the sensors agents layer, sensor processing agents layer and finally, the support assistant agents layers. The sensor agents layer is formed by sensor managing agents and sensor data flow agents that they control the sensor devices and retransmit data streams to upper layer respectively. In sensor processing agents layer is an agents collection that process data flows produced by sensors, allowing elements tracking. The last layer is formed by special agents for helping and supporting the user monitoring and user choice. In this paper, we propose a multi-agent system architecture to manage spatially distributed active (or pan-tilt-zoom) cameras. Traditional video surveillance algorithms are of no use for active cameras, and we have to look at different approaches. Such multi-sensor surveillance systems have to be designed to solve two related problems: data fusion and coordinated sensor-task management. Generally, architectures proposed for the coordinated operation of multiple cameras are based on the centralisation of management decisions at the fusion centre. However, the existence of intelligent sensors capable of decision making brings with it the possibility of conceiving alternative decentralised architectures. This problem is approached by means of a MAS, integrating data fusion as an integral part of the architecture for distributed coordination purposes. Research in context-aware systems has been moving towards reusable and adaptable architectures for managing more advanced human-computer interfaces. Ambient. Intelligence (AmI) investigates computer-based services, which are ubiquitous and based on a variety of objects and devices. Their intelligent and intuitive interfaces act as mediators through which people can interact with the ambient environment. In this paper we present an agent-based architecture which supports the execution of agents in AmI environments. Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited.; The Department of Defense relies on modeling and simulation for a variety of purposes, including joint exercise training, developing and evaluating doctrine and tactics, and studying weapon system effectiveness. Advances in technology have made the achievement of technically and visually accurate simulations possible, but little has been done to present realistic scenarios while supporting user interaction. This dissertation describes a multi-agent interactive simulation engine for generating interactive scenarios or stories. A general-purpose multi-agent system simulation architecture, called a Connector-based Multi-Agent System (CMAS) is developed and presented, along with a software agent communication and coordination mechanism. In this architecture, stories are generated through discovery as a by-product of agent interactions, rather than being fixed in advance. The ensuing story adapts to the user's interventions and is closely aligned to the goals of the agents. The multi-agent system design of the story engine has resulted in a data-driven simulation engine, which is domain independent and highly scalable. In support of refining the motivation for this initiative a comprehensive investigation into the evolution, status, characteristics and attributes of technology enhanced learning was carried out and is reported here. This includes details on a number of recent initiatives in the use of eLearning within educational institutions. The design and establishment of the InfoStation-based enhanced mLearning architecture reported here is based on an agent-oriented approach, so as to facilitate the requisite system flexibility and adaptability. Emotion although being an important factor in our every day life it is many times forgotten in the development of systems to be used by persons. In this work we present an architecture for a ubiquitous group decision support system able to support persons in group decision processes. The system considers the emotional factors of the intervenient participants, as well as the argumentation between them. Particular attention will be taken to one of components of this system: the multi-agent simulator, modeling the human participants, considering emotional characteristics, and allowing the exchanges of hypothetic arguments among the participants.

Multi-agent systems (i.e. systems comprising many agents) have been proposed for many Internet and distributed applications. The proposed systems have little or no consideration of the effects of this multi-agent approach on network resources. In this paper, we presented a simulation assessment of the effect of multi-agent systems on network resources. The routing scheme of the agents was formulated based on the travelling salesman problem. Lightweight agent (LWA) controller was modelled using a fuzzy logic toolbox in the MATLAB environment. The performance metrics of bandwidth usage, response time and throughput were used to compare the network resources usage by different groups of LWAs (10 LWAs, 40 LWAs, 100 LWAs, 150 LWAs) during their computational task on the network. Java programs were written for the implementation of lightweight agents in the simulation. The inputs to the system were realised by multiplicative pseudorandom number generation during the simulation. The simulation result analysis was carried out based on the performance metrics stated above for the four groups of agents. Increasing the number of LWAs in a simulated multi-agent system decreased the response time but increased the throughput and the bandwidth usage.
