Recycling of Asphalt Pavements with Asphalt Rubber

Pavement recycling has been an important rehabilitation technique to deal with reclaimed materials from old pavements which are usually sent to landfills. The application of this technique contributes to: i) the accomplishment of the requirements defined by the European legislation for the amount of material sent to landfills; ii) the reduction in the use of new raw materials used to produce pavement layers. The reduction of materials to be used in pavement rehabilitation has also been possible through the use of asphalt rubber binder (i.e. asphalt modified by crumb rubber from ground tyres) in the production of asphalt mixtures. These mixtures, named asphalt rubber mixtures, have shown an excellent performance in pavement rehabilitation in terms of fatigue and reflective cracking. This behaviour is based on the physical properties of the asphalt rubber which are transferred from the rubber to the net asphalt. The use of asphalt rubber in pavement recycling produces a binder which is a blend of the reclaimed mix binder and the new asphalt rubber added to the reclaimed asphalt mix. This recycled binder presents properties mainly based on recycling rates and on the binders used in recycling. The behaviour of the recycled mixture depends on these factors. This paper presents the results of the properties evaluated for recycled mixtures derived from the type of binder presented in the reclaimed asphalt mix and recycling rate. The influence of the reclaimed asphalt mixes and recycling rate was studied to optimize the behaviour of the recycled mixtures. The mechanical performance in terms of stiffness and fatigue resistance was also evaluated for the recycling design process.

A Tese visa a analisar a organização de catadores de resíduos recicláveis, tendo como quadro de referência a teoria institucional. Autores ligados ao movimento da economia solidária propõem a cooperativa popular como modelo de organização capaz de emancipar o trabalhador, ainda que operando em contexto capitalista. Esta tese parte da premissa de que a organização dos catadores em Redes de Economia Solidária não é de fato uma via para sua inclusão social. Para isto, optou-se pela análise da inserção de cooperativas de catadores na indústria de reciclagem da embalagem PET. Desse modo, a pergunta motivadora desta Tese é: como e por que está ocorrendo a inserção dos catadores na cadeia de reciclagem da embalagem PET? Esta problemática foi analisada sob o intrincado ponto de vista dos multistakeholders, considerados como atores específicos que interagem no campo organizacional da indústria de reciclagem. Alguns fatores influenciam a competitividade das organizações na atualidade, frente às empresas globais: a utilização de tecnologia de ponta, a difusão do conhecimento, a preocupação com questões ambientais, entre outros. Este último fator tem sido de grande interesse, devido a todas as mudanças que o mundo tem enfrentado. Para todas as empresas, a busca pela mudança de processos e pela extinção de atividades poluidoras não tem sido muito fácil. Uma das maiores dificuldades é inserir ações de reaproveitamento nas atividades do dia a dia da empresa, aproveitando práticas que vem sendo utilizadas com resultados positivos. Sistemas de administração da produção, ferramentas como kanban podem ser um dos exemplos destas práticas, ou seja, a sistematização das informações consideradas vitais para a empresa. Visando contribuir para o debate sobre a naturalização e autonomização dos processos sociais, esta dissertação tenta problematizar a reciclagem de materiais, principalmente, de latinhas de alumínio sob a perspectiva da crise de reprodução do capital. A crítica à consciência naturalizante, socialmente necessária à reposição dos pressupostos da produção mercantil, é uma carência que esta pesquisa tenta evidenciar. Nesse sentido, o intuito do texto é tentar revelar como a consciência moderna, portanto, fetichista, se relaciona com teorias e práticas que envolvem a reciclagem, consubstanciada pela assim chamada consciência ambiental e, fundamentalmente, pela afirmação positiva da categoria trabalho, escondendo sua crise e, por isso, repondo-o em níveis cada vez mais profundos da vida cotidiana. Nesta dissertação foi estudado a coleta seletiva de resíduo sólido na cidade de Campinas (SP), classificada como terceiro município do Estado de São Paulo em população, com 1.039.297 habitantes, e também, em geração de resíduo sólido domiciliar. O objetivo consiste em quantificar o consumo de energia no transporte da coleta seletiva executada pelo setor público e pelo sistema cooperativo. Diariamente, o poder público coleta em média 655 toneladas das quais 99% tem como destino o aterro sanitário. Em 2005, a prefeitura e duas cooperativas, juntas recolheram seletivamente uma média de 329 toneladas/mês de resíduo sólido reciclável. Na coleta foram utilizados 14 caminhões que percorreram a distância de 31.200 km/mês e o consumo estimado de 10.900 litros de óleo diesel. No balanço energético correspondente à quantidade de energia gasta no transporte e a evitada com a reciclagem, estima-se que, com o reaproveitamento na indústria do montante de reciclável coletado para produção de novos produtos foi possível evitar o uso de cerca de 12.552 GJ de energia. Essa quantidade de energia evitada representa cerca de 32,5 vezes superior a energia consumida no transporte da coleta seletiva. As embalagens cartonadas assépticas para alimentos são comuns em nosso dia-a-dia. Tais embalagens são compostas por três materiais: papel, polietileno de baixa densidade e alumínio. Seu processo de reciclagem se dá em duas etapas sucessivas: a reciclagem do papel e a posterior reciclagem do composto de polietileno e alumínio. Durante a primeira etapa de reciclagem, um percentual das fibras de papel não é retirado do composto de polietileno e alumínio o que pode comprometer a qualidade de produtos feitos a partir da reciclagem deste composto. Para a extração do papel residual foi desenvolvido de maneira empírica um equipamento centrífugo em escala industrial. Visando o estudo do funcionamento deste equipamento fez-se a simulação deste usando o método dos elementos discretos (DEM). O primeiro passo foi a determinação de parâmetros físicos e de interação através de experimentos práticos e respectivas simulações computacionais para a calibração de um modelo, o qual foi conseguido de maneira satisfatória. The potential of enzymes recycling after hydrolysis and fermentation of wheat straw under a variety of conditions was investigated, monitoring the activity of the enzymes in the solid and liquid fractions, using low molecular weight substrates. A significant amount of active enzymes could be recovered by recycling the liquid phase. In the early stage of the process, enzyme adsorb to the substrate, then gradually returning to the solution as the saccharification proceeds. At 50 °C, normally regarded as an acceptable operational temperature for saccharification, the enzymes (Celluclast) significantly undergo thermal deactivation. The hydrolysis yield and enzyme recycling efficiency in consecutive recycling rounds can be increased by using high enzyme loadings and moderate temperatures. Indeed, the amount of enzymes in the liquid phase increased with its thermostability and hydrolytic efficiency. This study contributes towards developing effective enzymes recycling strategies and helping to reduce the enzyme costs on bioethanol production.

Resource and energy efficiency are key strategies for production and recycling networks. They can contribute to more sustainable industrial production and can help cope with challenges such as competition, rising resource and energy prices, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and scarce and expensive landfill space. In pursuit of these objectives, further enhancements of single processes are often technologically sophisticated and expensive due to past achievements that have brought the processes closer to technical optima. Nevertheless, the potential for network-wide advancements may exist. Methods are required to identify and assess the potential for promising resource and energy efficiency measures from technical, economic, and ecological perspectives. This article presents an approach for a material flow-based techno-economic as well as ecological analysis and assessment of resource efficiency measures in production and recycling networks. Based on thermodynamic process models of different production and recycling processes, a material and energy flow model of interlinked production and recycling processes on the level of chemical compounds is developed. The model can be used to improve network-wide resource efficiency by analyzing and assessing measures in scenario and sensitivity analyses. A necessary condition for overcoming technical and economic barriers for implementing such measures can be fulfilled by identifying strategies that appear technologically feasible and economically and ecologically favorable. This report explores one of the most pressing national and international problems of our age, that of water shortages. It does this via an analysis of the feasibility of implementing planned, potable water recycling schemes in Australia's urban areas. The report adopts the theoretical foundation that water is a basic human right, a view endorsed by the United Nations and enshrined in Article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. On this basis, it traces recent attempts by the international community to address the world's 'water problem,' most notably through the Millennium Development Goals, and proposes that solving the problem should be a top priority for all nations. Such a mission takes on particular importance in Australia because of the erratic rate and distribution of our annual rainfall. Developed nations like Australia have a special duty to lead by example and set responsible environmental precedents for other nations to follow. Today car manufacturers are beginning to integrate recycling constraints in the first stages of the design of a new car due to their concern regarding the effects of car design on the recovery of material after End-of-Life Vehicle treatment. Improved understanding of the recycling process can help designers to avoid contaminants in the recycled product and improve the efficiency of current and new sorting methods. The main goal of this paper is to describe the state of the art of the technical efficiency of recovery channels for plastics in Europe in order to define requirements for automotive plastic part design. Integrating plastic recycling industries into the automotive supply chain

Chains for recycling the plastics used in the automotive industry are complex systems just emerging. In this paper we propose to explain the reasons which have so far prevented these recycling chains from achieving a sufficiently regulated state to make them reliable partners for automotive manufacturers. On the basis of this, and taking recycling polypropylene as an example, we propose to use a dynamic flow model of this chain to identify the critical parameters on which achieving this regulated state depends. The results are at two levels. They establish the major role played by changes in the price of oil (an uncontrollable element but one where economic pressures are tending to increase its benefiting the development of these recycling chains) and the necessity for recycling companies to have a flow of quality input sufficient to saturate their production systems and achieve profitable sales. To achieve these results we intend to explore various solutions. Moreover, our study has shown that the development of the chain is also suffering from the lack of cooperation between those involved and the absence of a global vision of the system (which could have been the role of an official eco-organisation if France had chosen to provide these recycling industries with a body of this type). In our project we have been able to experiment using our modelling system to fill this gap. It proved to be an effective way of creating around it a multi-participant area in which exchanges occurred allowing all the parties concerned to understand the aims and requirements of the other participants and the impact of their own actions. This research has thus resulted in the creation of a multi-party working group continuing to develop this tool.

The use of composites in industry is ever increasing. However, end-of-life solutions for composites are still under development. In this paper, a solution linking design strategies with a recycling process for thermoset composite materials is proposed. The recovery solution for these materials is a supercritical water solvolysis process. The needs and multi-disciplinary skills required for taking recycling possibilities into account in the early stages of product design and the necessity to standardize product-recycling capabilities based on design requirements will be discussed. The paper highlights the need for designers to take a functional approach into consideration, including characterization of materials behavior, recycling process limits, constraints and opportunities. In order to decrease both energy consumption and CO 2 emissions, the automotive, aeronautics and aerospace industries aim at making lighter vehicles. To achieve this, composite materials provide good opportunities, ensuring high material properties and free definition of geometry. As an example, for cold applications, the use of carbon fiber/thermoset composites is ever increasing, in spite of a high fiber price. But in a global and eco-friendly approach, the major limitation for their use remains their potential recyclability. Recycling a composite means having a recycling technology available, getting a dismantle solution and an access for the product, and disposing identification plus selection possibilities to the materials. Thus, carbon fibers recovery (i.e. recycling and re-processing) would both help design engineers to balance energy efficiency and cost, and open new opportunities for developing second-life composites, dedicated to the manufacture of medium or low loaded parts (non-structural in many cases). El proceso de reciclado de las vesículas sinápticas es una característica integral de la función presináptica y determina su habilidad para mantener la liberación del neurotransmisor durante una actividad repetitiva. En esta tesis, caracterizamos el reciclado de las vesículas sinápticas en el terminal neuromuscular de ratón y estudiamos su regulación por los canales de calcio dependiente de voltaje (CCDV), específicamente el canal de calcio tipo L, y por el neuromodulador adenosina. Para desarrollar este trabajo, utilizamos indicadores fluorescentes tipo FM para marcar la membrana de las vesículas sinápticas y técnicas electrofisiológicas para cuantificar la liberación de las vesículas sinápticas. En el terminal neuromuscular de ratón, determinamos que el reciclado vesicular es regulado por el nivel de actividad neuronal. La estimulación a alta frecuencia produce la movilización de dos pooles funcionales de vesículas sinápticas que difieren en su disponibilidad de liberación. En base a esta característica, definimos estos pooles como pooles vesiculares de liberación rápida o lenta. Por otro lado, evidenciamos que la duración de la estimulación a alta frecuencia determina un reciclado vesicular selectivo y secuencial hacia estos pooles vesiculares funcionales. County Costs and Funding in North Carolina’s Electronic Recycling Program

Senate Bill 887, better known as the “Amend Electronics Recycling Law,” banished electronic waste from landfill disposal in 2010. It also set up a system of funding to ensure that manufacturers of electronics sold in the state dedicate resources to electronics recycling. Thanks in a large part to this system, county recycling programs expected to manage electronic material with little cost. However, in FY11/12 and 12/13 local counties reportedly spent large amounts of money to run their electronic recycling programs. Using survey data from 21 counties in the state, this paper seeks to describe the costs experienced by county electronic recycling programs. It also aims to determine if there is a fault in the funding system with large monetary consequences for counties, or if programs are reacting dramatically to smaller costs based on their original perception that counties should have zero costs to managing this material. Finally, it analyzes the factors in county demographics and program management that predict high costs. This paper finds that counties are experiencing high costs in the form of fees from their recycling vendors. Vendor fees were made necessary due to an unexpected drop in the value of CRTs and underfunding from the state’s producer responsibility system. Prior to FY12/13 many programs had a zero-cost–zero-revenue relationship with their vendors. This study was designed to describe the relationship between specific local government solid waste and recycling program attributes and recyclable material recovery. The characteristics of solid waste and recycling programs vary greatly across North Carolina, achieving variable levels of recyclable material recovery rates. Given that solid waste disposal is increasing at a significant rate in North Carolina and approximately 20 years of landfill space remain in the state’s landfills, solid waste directors and recycling coordinators face an enormous amount of pressure to divert as much materials as possible to recycling programs. Through a survey of North Carolina solid waste and recycling program managers, this study collected vital data regarding characteristics of waste and recycling collection programs including pickup frequencies, weekly waste and recycling collection capacities, recycling separation requirements, and other variables presumed to be related to recyclable material recovery rates. Using correlation analyses and significance tests, the study revealed which solid waste and recycling program characteristics are most closely related to recyclable materials recovery. Growing populations, rising incomes, and changing lifestyles contribute to severe waste management problems in many urban centers around the world. In low-income Asian countries, a majority of municipal solid waste is inadequately processed, leading to environmental problems that affect the health of humans and animals, and cause economic and welfare losses. However, in many countries there is neither infrastructure nor market incentives for managing household waste such as aseptic cartons usefully. This research explores the costs and benefits of recycling aseptic cartons at BBPK, a recycling facility in the Indonesian town of Bandung, and provides recommendations for improving the facility’s profitability. The results of the cost benefit analysis from a business perspective demonstrate that the costs of operating the recycling facility generally exceed revenue. The negative operational cash flow occurs despite funding provided by aseptic carton-maker Tetra Pak to support BBPK’s purchase of raw materials. However, the cost benefit analysis demonstrates that under certain market conditions, recycling activities could become profitable. The United States Agency of International Development (USAID) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have relied heavily on the distribution of bednets to curb malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, WHO has recently recommended a massive scale-up of its distribution of long long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). Many nets in circulation are already reaching their end-of-life stage, and with more nets on the way USAID and WHO are concerned that discarded nets will have negative impacts on both the environment and human health. This master’s project addresses two issues of concern for USAID’s LLIN technical team: 1) whether a disposal/recycling program is a possibility for manufacturers and donors, and 2) whether there are realistic possibilities for retrieving nets from the field after they have lost their efficacy. Research on these issues was conducted through a literature review and a series of interviews with manufacturers, donors and other stake-holders. Results indicate that take-back and recycling programs could be a possibility. Manufacturers are receptive to the idea of more environmentally friendly practices including recycling old nets and using biodegradable packaging. ABSTRACT Contemporary Mozambican artists who use detritus as media create artworks that chronicle their culture through bits and pieces of its discarded histories. By using culturally specific and symbolically charged recyclia, these artists create art that is quintessentially Mozambican, as the materials they use become potent signifiers of Mozambique. Contemporary artists' use of recycling, in particular the recycling of weapons in the Transforming Arms into Plowshares/Transformação de Armas em Enxadas(TAE) project allows recycling to emerge as a paradigm in contemporary African art, and as a potent tool for cultural investigation. Utilizing recycling as a tool develops a broad, cross-cultural, interdisciplinary framework to investigate complex issues within divergent African and global societies. Artists in Mozambique who recycle are not only connected to cultural and artistic practices of the past, they continue these traditions within contemporary contexts. By creating artwork from cast-off materials, artists who utilize unwanted debris in Mozambique illustrate how recycling permeates all levels of society, including its broad expansion into art making, and how the use of reprocessed materials by artists both inspires and instills a sense of pride in artistic practices.
