Banana, an important component in the diet of the global population, is one of the most consumed fruits in the world. This fruit is also very favorable to industry processes (e. g., fermented beverages) due to its rich content on soluble solids and minerals, with low acidity. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of factors such as banana weight and extraction time during a hot aqueous extraction process on the total soluble solids content of banana. The extract is to be used by the food and beverage industries. The experiments were performed with 105 mL of water, considering the moisture of the ripe banana (65%). Total sugar concentrations were obtained in a beer analyzer and the result expressed in degrees Plato (degrees P, which is the weight of the extract or the sugar equivalent in 100 g solution at 20 degrees C), aiming at facilitating the use of these results by the beverage industries. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos do biorregulador MBTA [cloridrato de N,N-dietil-2-(4-metilbenziloxi) etilamina] aplicado em diferentes épocas e concentrações sobre a produtividade e qualidade dos frutos das laranjeiras 'Hamlin', 'Valência' e 'Pêra' e em características fisiológicas da laranjeira 'Hamlin'. Em duas safras consecutivas, o MBTA foi aplicado em três diferentes concentrações (8; 16 e 32 mg L-1) e em duas diferentes fases fenológicas (25% e 100% de flores abertas) em árvores cítricas adultas, utilizando um volume de 7 litros de solução por planta acompanhada do adjuvante Silwett L-77 0,05%. Foram amostrados 20 frutos por planta em quatro diferentes épocas para cada cultivar estudado para determinar o teor de sólidos solúveis totais; acidez; quantidade de sólidos solúveis totais em caixa industrial de 40,8 kg; pH; rendimento de suco; cor do suco, massa média e diâmetro médio dos frutos. O melão (Cucumis melo L.) é uma das culturas de grande expressão econômica e social para a região Nordeste do Brasil. Apesar disso e dos baixos níveis de fósforo (P) dos solos tropicais, existem poucas pesquisas sobre adubação com P nesta cultura, embora seja frequentemente mencionado que este nutriente tem papel preponderante na produção e qualidade dos frutos. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de doses de P (0; 120; 240; 360 e 480 kg ha-1 de P2O5), na produção e qualidade do melão-amarelo híbrido Goldex F1, nas condições ambientais de Teresina - Piauí. O experimento foi conduzido em um delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, tendo 40 plantas por parcela. Os frutos foram colhidos aos 75 após o plantio. Foram avaliados os dados médios da produção total, produção de frutos comerciais, massa e número de frutos por planta, comprimento e diâmetro de frutos, espessura da polpa de frutos, sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável e o índice de maturação. Com o objetivo de avaliar o teor de licopeno, de sólidos solúveis totais (SST) e suas correlações com valores de leitura L, a e b do cromatógrafo em cultivares de melancia, foi conduzido um experimento na Fazenda Água Limpa, Universidade de Brasília. O delineamento utilizado foi de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, 10 plantas por parcela e oito tratamentos formados por quatro cultivares de polinização aberta: Crimson Sweet, Charleston Gray, Fairfax, Omaro Yamato e quatro híbridos F1: Ferrari, Voyager, Rubi e Smile. Os frutos foram analisados no laboratório de genética da Embrapa Hortaliças. Observou-se diferença entre as cultivares para todos os parâmetros avaliados. Os híbridos Smile e Rubi apresentam potencial para serem utilizados como progenitores em programas de melhoramento de melancia visando a melhoria da qualidade dos frutos. Os valores de a, oriundos de amostras coletadas na parte central do fruto, e os teores de licopeno foram correlacionados positivamente (r=0,69) indicando a utilização do cromatógrafo para a triagem inicial de materiais a serem utilizados. Blueberries are very popular for their potential health benefits around the world, from USA to Asia and to the Mediterranean. In the present work blueberries from cultivar Bluecrop harvested in different regions of Portugal (Estarreja-ES, Vouzela-VZ, Vila Verde-VV, Sever do Vouga-SV and Oliveira do Hospital-OH) were analysed to evaluate their physical-chemical properties: moisture content, total soluble solids (ºBrix) acidity, calibre, colour and texture. Moisture was evaluated by drying until constant weight, sugar content by refractometry and acidity by titration. Calibre was evaluated with a caliper rule, colour with a colorimeter in the CIELab colour space, and texture with a texturometer by measuring force in compression with a 2 mm probe P/2. The results showed that the sample VV had the highest moisture content as compared to all other varieties (83%), whereas the sample OH showed the highest acidity (0.79 mg citric acid/100g) and the sample ES the highest total soluble solids content (14,65 ºBrix). The average calibre ranged from 0.90 cm for sample SV to 1.17 cm for sample OH. The importance of minimally processed commodities in the retail groceries of most developed countries has been rising continuously during the last decades. Cantaloupe melon is used more than any other fruit in fresh-cut processing. Ultraviolet (UV) light has been extensively used to simulate biological stres in plants and for determining resistance mechanisms of plant tissues. In this study the effect of ultraviolet irradiation on some properties of fresh-cut cantalope melon was determined during storage. Freshly cut cantalope melons cubes treated with ultraviolet irradiation at the doses of 1, 2 or 3 min before storage, and then placed in a cold room at 5±1°C temperature and 85-90% RH. Hue angle values of control group is low compared to UV-C treated samples, whereas L values of is high. EL of UV treated samples higher than those of control group. Total soluble solids of fresh-cut melon samples in UC3 treatment increased during storage. The results indicate that UV-C treatments on fresh-cut cantaloupe melon cubes increased total soluble solids independently from water loss.

In recent years, Japanese quince (Chaenomeles sinensis Koehne) plants have been widely studied due to their high productivity, resistance to entomosporium and ability to serve as rootstock for other cultivars. In order to facilitate the use of this cultivar for human consumption, the present study aimed to develop and evaluate the acceptance of a Japanese quince jam with different concentrations of total soluble solids. The fruits used in the experiment were harvested at the Experimental Farm of EPAMIG, located in the city of Maria da Fé, MG, Brazil. To obtain the jams, the fruits were processed to obtain a final product with concentrations of 66, 68 and 70 °Brix with respect to the total soluble solids. Acceptance testing was performed by a group of fifty non-trained panellists, who evaluated the appearance, texture, aroma, taste, overall acceptance and purchasing intention of the different treatments. The results showed that the Japanese quince jams were well accepted with respect to all the attributes, and that, in general, the samples with 68 and 70 oBrix showed greater acceptability and purchasing intention amongst the tasters.

In order to reach the strengthening and the development of family agriculture as well as the premise of diversification of the productive sources, there appears as an alternative the cultivation of common vineyards destined to the production of home-grown wine, juices and derivatives. Attempts were made to evaluate the existing relationships among local meteorological variables and handling practices, dry pruning and green pruning and the effects on phenological behavior, productive aspects and on the quality of the cultivated grape under the conditions of the region of Pelotas/RS. For this purpose, a family based agricultural property was selected located in the 8TH district of Pelotas/RS, in which the experiment was carried out and where the experimental delineation was composed for a (2 x 2 x 2) factorial, these being: (Bord?? and BRS Violeta) cultivar, period of dry pruning (normal and late) and green pruning (with and without defoliation). BACKGROUND AND AIM: To predict harvest time for logistic applications in vineyards and wineries, measurements of total soluble solids (TSS) are typically combined with projections assuming TSS increases at 1°Bé/week. Here, three questions were asked: (i) what is the magnitude and direction of the bias in estimates of ripening assuming 1°Bé/week across varieties, regions and seasons? (ii) what are the climatic drivers of this bias? and (iii) could thermal rates improve predictions? METHODS AND RESULTS:  Actual TSS of Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon was measured in commercial vineyards in Coonawarra, Barossa Valley and Riverland. Predictions used (i) the default 1°Bé/week; (ii) variety- and location-specific chronological rates between 0.8 and 1.2°Bé/week; and (iii) variety- and location-specific thermal rates between 0.009 and 0.019°Bé/Cd. In eight of the nine cases, 1°Bé/week biased ripening predictions. Seasonal bias correlated with evaporative demand in the Riverland and Coonawarra and with minimum temperature in the Barossa Valley. Thermal rates were not superior to calibrated chronological rates to predict ripening. CONCLUSION: Locally calibrated rates significantly improved ripening predictions for major grapevine varieties in regions with contrasting climates and viticultural profiles. Aleatico (Vitis vinifera L.) grapes were harvested at 21.3 Brix and dehydrated at 20°C, 45% relative humidity, and 1.5 m/sec air flow in a small-scale thermo-conditioned tunnel. Postharvest grape dehydration was performed until the fruit lost an average of 40% initial weight. During dehydration, single destemmed grape berries were analyzed nondestructively using an acousto-optically tunable filter (AOTF) near-infrared (NIR) spectrophotometer (1100–2300 nm) in reflectance. Total soluble solids (TSS) and moisture content (%) were measured on the same berries with the objective of using spectral and nonspectral information to develop regression models for predicting these parameters. Partial least squares regression applied after different statistical pretreatments (multiplicative scatter correction, Savitzky-Golay 1st or 2nd derivative filter) was tested on absorbance spectra to define the most effective approach. Two prediction models were obtained (n = 450 for TSS, n = 600 for water loss) in which the coefficient of determination in cross-validation (r2) and the root mean standard error of cross-validation were 0.93 and 0.89 Brix for TSS and 0.92 and 2.16% for water loss, respectively. A simple and fast midinfrared (MIR) spectroscopy method was developed for simultaneously determining total soluble solids (TSS, degrees Brix), pH, total phenolics, ammonia, free amino nitrogen (FAN), and yeast assimilable nitrogen (YAN) contents in grape juice samples using attenuated total reflectance (ATR). Results from this study demonstrated the capability of ATR-MIR coupled with partial least-squares regression to measure TSS and pH and to monitor FAN, ammonia, and YAN in a wide range of grape juice samples. The standard error in cross-validation and the residual predictive deviation obtained were 0.20 degrees Brix and 9 for TSS, 0.07 and 3.3 for pH, 14.8 mg/L and 2 for ammonia, 28.3 mg/L and 2 for FAN, and 36.9 mg/L and 2 for YAN, respectively. Fruit growth is stimulated by different weather conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of weather conditions on the physicochemical properties of pineapple guava fruit growth. Twenty trees were marked in two production areas located at different altitudes (1,800 and 2,580 m.a.s.l.), and measurements were performed every 7 days from 99 and 141 days post-anthesis to harvest at altitudes of 1,800 and 2,580 m.a.s.l., respectively. The results indicate that altitude and weather conditions greatly influence the growth and development of pineapple guava fruit, and these effects are primarily manifested in the physical characteristics of the fruit. The weight and size of the fruit at harvest are directly related to the altitude of the production area. The weather condition that has the greatest impact on total titratable acidity at harvest is cumulative radiation during fruit growth; the highest value of total soluble solids at harvest corresponds to the location with the higher altitude, lower rainfall and relative humidity and higher cumulative radiation during the fruit growth period. The hue angle and pulp firmness at harvest are not influenced by the location or weather conditions at any location and do not determine the fruit quality at harvest time.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar a qualidade dos frutos e a época de maturação de 46 tangerinas e híbridos em condições de campo na Estação Experimental de Citricultura de Bebedouro (EECB), Bebedouro-SP. As variedades de tangerinas e híbridos (tangores e tangelos) foram introduzidas de bancos de germoplasma da Itália, Portugal, Espanha e França, e a pesquisa desenvolveu-se durante os anos agrícolas de 2001/2002 e 2002/2003. Foram avaliadas características externas de qualidade, como altura e diâmetro dos frutos, massa dos frutos, facilidade em descascar com a mão e características internas como: número de sementes, teor de sólidos solúveis totais, acidez total titulável, rendimento em suco, "ratio" e rendimento em polpa. Duas cultivares apresentaram frutos de boa qualidade e época de maturação precoce, podendo ser disponibilizadas no mercado, num período de escassez deste tipo de citros, e serem alternativas à tangerina-'Cravo'. Thinning with NAA, NAD, ethephon, urea and by hand to improve fruit quality of 'Gerdi' apricot

This research was conducted to study the effects of chemical and hand thinning on fruit quality of 'Gerdi' apricot. In the first year, three weeks after full bloom (AFB) branches of mature trees were sprayed with naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) at 10, 20, and 40 mg L-1, naphthalene acetamide (NAD) at 20, 40, and 80 mg L-1, ethephon at 50, 100 and 200 mg L-1, or urea at 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6%. In next year, hand thinning was performed as a separate experiment and leaf to fruit ratio (LFR) was adjusted to 10:1, 20:1 or 30:1 at pit-hardening stage of fruit development. In both years, NAA at 40 mg L-1, NAD at 80 mg L-1 and all concentrations of ethephon significantly increased fruit drop. All concentrations of urea significantly increased fruit drop in 2006, but only the two lower concentrations were effective in 2007. NAA at 20 and 40 mg L-1, and NAD at 40 and 80 mg L-1 increased fruit weight in 2006, but only the highest concentration of NAD was effective in 2007, while urea was effective at all concentrations in both years. Ethephon effect on fruit weight was not significant at all. Hand thinning consistently increased fruit weight, but length and diameter were increased only at a leaf to fruit ratio of 30:1. Valencia Late. Both internal validation and external validation were conducted and modified partial least squares regression was also tested. The best model for soluble solids content had 1-VR = 0.85, Rc^2 = 0.91 and SECV = 0.51 in the internal validation, showing RMSEP = 0.51 in the external validation exercise. Dragon fruit or pitahaya (Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britton & Rose) is an exquisite and exotic fruit with attractive aroma and flavor, and a characteristic red-skinned color. Its production and supply for regional and foreign markets is limited to its storage life. The objective of this study was to evaluate physiological alterations and sensitivity to chilling injuries during postharvest of pitahaya. Fruits harvested at the Tehuacán Valley, Puebla, México, were stored at three postharvest temperatures: 3, 7, and 11 ±1 °C, for 7, 14, and 21 d and under these conditions plus a 4 d period at 22 ±1 °C. Evaluated fruits were then contrasted with fresh fruit (control 1), and non-cold stored fruits maintained 4 d at 22 °C (control 2). Variables were epicarp color, fruit firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity, and vitamin C content in the mesocarp; and a maturity index was calculated. Berry colour and size are important factors determining Flame Seedless quality. Supplementary to standard cultivation, foliar application of potassium (K) and seaweed or soil application of vegetable extracts affect grape quality. The purpose of this trial was to determine if combined product application (CPA) of K, seaweed and leonardite (organic material of vegetable origin) can improve Flame Seedless grape colour, berry size and composition. This study was conducted on Flame Seedless in the Berg River Valley in two seasons. In 2011/2012, leonardite was applied through fertigation six, four and three weeks before harvest, while K and seaweed were applied as foliar sprays four and three weeks before harvest. In 2012/2013, all products were applied eight and six weeks before harvest. Treatments included (1) control (ethephon/ ethephon and abscisic acid - ABA); (2) CPA with ethephon/ethephon and ABA (CPA-plus); and (3) CPA without ethephon/ethephon and ABA (CPA-minus). All vines received standard gibberellic acid treatments. Berry quality was determined. In 2011/2012, CPA-minus reduced anthocyanin concentration significantly compared to the control.
